What is an "Altaholic"?

I call myself an altaholic because I have a short attention span. Every time I log on, I think "What do I want to do today." Because so many characters have so many widely different playstyles. Do I want to feel accomplished by gaining a bunch of levels on a lowbie? Do I want to flip out and kill stuff with my 50 scrapper? Do I want to play with a bunch of pets? Do I want to run my character through some time-travel story arcs for in character reviews? Is it my superteam night? Do I want to find a team on Pinnacle? Do I want to find some light RP on Virtue? Do I want to chatter on in LBx (which I only have pop-up with my Liberty characters)? Whatever mood I'm in, I have a character ready to go. And if I don't, then it's time to make a new one!

Ty lord raveneyes. Now i understand why there are so many 60 month vets still enjoying the game. It would take like 2 years just to be able to try one type each day lol.

Are those numbers based solely on pri/sec combinations or are you adding in epic/patron pools as well.

I only have about 15 characters, mostly on Champion. I play several of them frequently, a couple of them are concepts I'm trying to get a handle on, and a couple of them are placeholding names. My mood determines who I play at any given time as much as anything else.
Yet I hear altoholics talking about their hundreds of characters, distributed across several servers, so I thought maybe I still wasn't actually one myself.

I have a spreadsheet made up to help me not duplicate combinations... of course when inspiration hits I never think to look at it.
I'm also an altoholic (99 characters currently, 1 50)

Altoholism isn't about quantity; it's a mindset. Whether you have a thousand character concepts that must be made, or a dozen character concepts that must be made, as long as you have character concepts that must be made, you're an altoholic.

I have over 100 characters across all AT's and 14 Servers... I play on 3 of the EU ones as well, and have been playing for almost 4 years in total and only have 10....almost 14....level 50's

I have about 270+ toons between 2 accounts. I love creating characters more than anything else, sometimes.
Have 12 lvl 50's and another 20 - 30 characters that are in the mid 30's to mid 40's.
Don't play as much as I used to, though. But even so, I am still a rageing alt-o-holic! I wouldn't have it any other way! So many things to chose from!

All i can say is...
Sometimes I am playing... And there is someone near me... Something on him/her sparks my mind... It may be the costume... It may be the AT... It may be the name... It may be one of the powersets... It may be both Powersets... It may be only one power on the powerset... It may be one of the Powerset combined with the Powerset of someone else... Then i *HAVE* to create a new toon... Sometimes it ends totally different than any of those factors that inspired me... But it was born from the primal chaos of my mind... And its all mine... and now i made a biiig wall of text... Good night everyone... as its night here on Brazil... almost 1:03AM... and I have to wake up early tomorrow... As soon as I finish this new toon... See... a big wall of text... Wall... Text... Big... A new troller will be born!

Yes. I can get lost on a straight-line map.
Here's the altoholic's dilemma in a nutshell:
1. I've been trying to play my dark/arrow defender Valentine Candy on Freedom to 50. I'm nearly 45 now. But Saturday I had a hard time finding teams, and I'm getting kind of bored with Freedom. So today I went back to Virtue and decided to play a level 27 stone/superstrength tanker of mine, Onyx Butterfly.
2. My primary goal is to get to 30. New costumes! I'm already nearly 28, and I find a good team in the morning and get to 30 very quickly -- 2 hours or less, I think. I enhance, run my costume missions, make the new costume, and log off.
3. In the afternoon I decide to play the same character again, and hook up with the same team leader. Another excellent team! I'm somewhat dismayed that a fully-enhanced stone tanker is still very squishy below 32, but in no time I make it to 32. And... granite is everything I hoped and feared. I'm much, much tougher, even with just one enhancement in place. I laugh at smashing/lethal damage from enemies 4 levels above me. But I'm a giant rock. Luckily we have a kin on the team, but caves are trickier because of my height. I can't jump over anything, I have to use teleport to get around enemies once in a while, I can't see my costumes, and I've essentially undergone a sex change -- at least, I look vaguely like a guy and my voice when I taunt is a deep man's voice.
So... I've already decided that one stone tanker is all I'll ever need. Squishy to 32, Godly afterwards but with a unique set of conditions that I wouldn't want to deal with on a second character. No problem, right? It's not like I habitually play the same sets over and over anyway.
Except...
4. When I'm getting ready to leave, someone else on the team extends a public thanks "to our rock girl tank". And I immediately think Oh! A stone armor tanker named Rocker Girl!
Creative Voice: Yes! A leather skirt, cropped shirt top, kind of trashy... laced up leather platform boots... jeans for a second costume... I see it all!
Voice of Reason: No. Not another stone tanker. You made a new character just yesterday. Plus there are no free slots on the 4-5 servers you regularly play on. Anyway, a simple name like that is certainly already taken.
Creative Voice: Oh, but I have open slots on other servers. I at least have to make the character once, because I like the concept so much. And if "Rocker Girl" isn't available then maybe "Rocker Grrl" is. That would work splendidly too.
So off I go to... Guardian I think it was. The name was available! And... hey, I can do a brute! That way I'm not playing a second stone tanker. Yeah! Oh, and we can do mace and swing a baseball bat!
No sooner have I made this character than I decide that I need a more goth look... and I forgot to fix the mace. Plus, I really like the character concept, enough to play her. That means I should make her on Virtue where most of my villains are. I could buy more slots... that is, if the name's available...
It was. And I did.
Long story short... I made 3 new characters this weekend, one of which I plan to actually play. And I bought 5 new slots so I have 4 more left for the next few bouts of inspiration.

To me, being an altoholic is wanting to pay for all those slots on all those servers, even though you'd need a bank loan to afford it.
To be an altoholic is to want to make a new alt whenever you bump into a clever level 5.
To me being an altoholic is the result of having an active imagination.

I see that there are worse altoholics than me. I don't feel like a complete addict now. I think I'll go make another alt. It's okay, just one more... no harm done....

*Enters the room and sits down* "I'm Mason2004, and I'm an altoholic.." Everyone nodded and says, "Hello Mason2004." I nod and continue, "Well you see it all started five years ago with this game called City of Heroes.." All in the room smile, nod and murmur about knowing the game. "..and you see I have a problem. I can't.. I can't stop making characters!" The room noods more and tries to give me morale support. "..and I know I can't help myself. I know.. I know... I am just going to continue to make more characters..." I am consoled by the members of the room and given well wishes.
I am an Altoholic.. and if you are one too, come join Altoholics Not So Anonymous (ANSA) and maybe you too can get a little empathy..

Seems there's a bit of discrepancy in the definition. Maybe it might help to develop a contrasting view.

Hahahha! I like it. I lean more towards the altoholic side of the scale myself, but not so much that I haven't leveled a few toons to 50. I enjoy playing different kinds of toons, but I also like achieving the pinnacle of character growth.
