Well DAM I suck at pvp!!

Seriously, I really do! lol

Guys, SOOO sorry for the long post. But only the pvp pros can help me here and I know you guys are all about information. lol

Ok I been here since launch, off and on I guess.

I was here for I13, actually havent really missed an issue yet, HOWEVER, I'm not a guy who builds his hero around pvp. And I HAVE gotten a few victories in Warburg, and maybe one in RV lol. I gotta tell ya tho, I just plain suck at pvp. However, when playing with people that got some sense(and are over the age of 10 lol) I really have a good time out there. I congratulate on good battles even if I lose. My very FIRST pvp experience was group on group and I died a lot but I had BLAST!

The other day I jumped into RV with my 50 Eng/Eng blaster. He doesnt really have any good sets per se, he has one that I just kinda threw on him for no reason LONG ago, but everything else is generically IO'ed. I love him in pve, I just chalk pvp up to me simply being lame. But I digress.

Anyway I zoned in, and saw a MM and a Dom there, and a Brute who was there off and on. Well in the 45 minutes or so they gave me a brutal beatdown. 3 on 1. I didnt really have time to trip off it for real, I was too busy thinkin bout my next strategy, but they wouldnt let up. It was so UNFAIR! But you know what, I kinda chalked it up to them just being villains and thats what villains do, I just shrugged it off.

The time before that, I went into RV and there was 2 other heroes and one Brute. All 3 of these were obviously regular pvpers and knew each other personally, as I tried to make conversation with the 2 heroes just standing around and they werent very friendly lol. Made me feel like an outcast. But again, no big deal, I was there for some fun. Well the Brute made a point to single me out evertime and destroy me, but the other 2 heroes didnt help. I think maybe they were chatting amongst themselves. Now, when I fought those villains 1 vs 3, they all ganged up on me. Either way I lose.

It made my experience bad, but I cant say it enough, man I just suck at pvp I think. Everytime I'm there I lose...even IOed out I lose. LOL its cool tho I just want to see if I can take on another badguy that can actually think and move.

Hey, no real complaint here about pvp I maybe need to just step my game up. The only complaint I have if any is I wish more people PVPED! If so, maybe less people would get "ganked", as you guys call it.(excuse me I dont use these words normally lol)My dream, if any for pvp because I honestly could live life just fine without it, would be if way more people were interested in it.

So, after all these years and now the recent hate of pvp by the people, heres my questions...

-The regular pvpers seem to be having problems with the way pvp works, but why should it matter to you if you are regulars and have in a sense "mastered" what it means to pvp?

-I keep seein these "Learn 2 pvp" comments and stuff which leads me to believe that once you learn it, you somehow have set yourself above the rest of the population and became, in a sense, a "pvper who owns noobs" or somethin, does the thought that maybe more people might actually have a better chance at pvp and the playing field is leveled maybe irritate some people?

-Don't you guys want the "casual" or "non-regular" pvpers to get in on the fun.

-Why do some(half?) pvpers make the casual person feel so...unwelcomed in pvp?(like those heroes who were on MY side that just sat there and dam near ignored me and let their homeboy wail on me with his super purple IOed out guy LOL)

Again, I have nothing against pvp, my experience is that I just plain suck and need to get a lil stronger or somethin maybe. If I got taken advantage I cant be mad I guess cuz there is a warning before you step out into the battlefield. lol Til then you'll see Mike Blu-Ray in RV every once in a while and dammit I'll keep tryin. I might be face planted when you see me but "no pain no gain" and "fall 3 times but get up 4" and all that inspirational junk. lol

But I need you guys to help me understand why it needs to be "fixed", especially if its not really needed for pve, in a sense. Not a flame or complaint, I just been out of the loop. Neither for or against pvp because man, even for a loser like myself it can be hella fun. lol

Alright I'm gunna try and be nice here despite all the lol's and good intentions I'm sure you have.

Here's the problem. Each and every one of us had to learn pvp, some of us did on our own, others may have had help but none the less spent time and effort into finding out what exactly works and what doesn't. Yes it was easy for some, but when someone used to PvE 100% of the time comes in, it's probably going to be more difficult than lets say a guy who plays more competetive typed games.

Base camping is an immature thing to do to newcomers I'll agree, but there's nothing preventing that from happening. They could literally just put a giant see through dome around the hospital and completely nullify that, but that would take time and devs don't really enjoy us from past experience. So we make due with what we have, and take out our anger on newcomers (aka pve'rs) that got asked on how to fix pvp over people that actually participate in it, even though that person in particular most likely didn't get asked...it still feels good.

P.S. I13 ruined different things for different people, but there's tons of topics/threads on this all over the pvp forum so just do a little digging and something will come up.

I have an IO'ed out nrg/nrg blaster. I love to PvP with her. She dies a lot. But, also, by the same token, I've killed EVERYONE in the train station before, I've killed EVERYONE camping the hero base. Sometimes I've gotten a 10:1 kill ratio.

* I bet you don't suck as much as you think...on a team with an emp...you'll kill waves of villains, even with only generic IOs.

* The 'vet' PvP'ers whine so much because they have to work now...they don't get it easy just because they built a /regen or nrg/wp stalker. Also, they whine, because in reality... they aren't very good either

If I see a toon in RV with no SG, no badges, and no title...I usually 'take it easy' on them, since they are probably a newer PvP'er. But the 'regulars' I shoot on sight all the time...usually, because I have a grudge against them from an earlier fight.

PvP doesn't need 'fixed', it just needs less 'whining', and a few tweaks.

Im better at the new PvP than I was at the old - I kill things easier and less things kill me than what could before. Its THAT point as to why I dislike the new PvP and I whine about it. You will find that your average Joe Zone dude that used to pwn and now hates PvP to fit the stereotype you just listed, but the people I used to play with do not.
[ QUOTE ]

This debate will rage on for a long time. You have your opinion, I have mine (see sig if anyone cares how I would fix PvP). The point is that no one knows if the new PvP is more popular than before or if the old PvP was. Until we have some hard datamining released, this argument doesnt matter.

If you love the new PvP, great! Im glad someone does (I would be pissed if no one liked it and it still existed). But your rational for why people dislike the new PvP so much is very warped.

To the OP:
The new PvP is really geared around knowing your character in the new PvP style . What I mean is, since the new PvP is totally different from PvE, you need to reinvent how you play the character in a PvP zone. For example, since knockback gets hit hard by diminishing returns, using your powers to mitigate that way isn't as feesible. I would look at your character as a pure damage dealer and nothing else. As a pure damage dealer, you can't support yourself very well, so you would need a team around you in order to have fun (IE not get farmed).

I would try to find an empath or a tank to run with you. The tank can keep things off of you long enough so that you can unload damage and, conversely, keep things off the tank long enough so that he doesn't die.

So quick answer: Form your own team and kill steal all the people who won't team with you.

It's not that they can't adapt to the new pvp, but rather that they think pvp took a turn in the wrong direction (i.e., pvp is worse now and less fun than it was before the sweeping changes).

[ QUOTE ]
I keep seein these "Learn 2 pvp" comments and stuff

[/ QUOTE ]
Basically just ignore those fools. Some folks will say "Learn 2 pvp" if you pop an inspiration while others will tell that person to "Learn 2 pvp" because inspirations are part of pvp. People are idiots, and they will call you an idiot regardless of what you do. Maybe you had the nerve to create a toon with a sub-optimal powerset, or maybe you took the wrong power, or maybe they don't like your costume. Now, if you start crying in broadcast because someone used a particular power or inspiration, you really do need to "learn 2 pvp!" Take that for what it's worth.

[ QUOTE ]
Don't you guys want the "casual" or "non-regular" pvpers to get in on the fun.

[/ QUOTE ]
Yes, but those folks won't be the best the second they enter the zone, and should understand that they are going to take their lumps. Granted, some of the afformentioned idiots could help things by not insulting your mother after they kill you, but you should really just ignore them and report them rather than taking the bait. Some players derive their enjoyment by ruining yours, and they would rather engage in broadcast pvp than fight you on the battlefield. The more you return verbal fire, the more you open yourself up for continued abuse. They win if they make you so mad that you leave the zone and never come back. PvP loses.

[ QUOTE ]
those heroes who were on MY side that just sat there and dam near ignored me and let their homeboy wail on me with his super purple IOed out guy

[/ QUOTE ]
Tough to know without being there, but some folks do have a sense of fairness. Maybe you went to their fightclub spot where they typically fight 1 v 1, and the other heroes wanted to see how you faired against the villain. If they joined you and ganged up on him, he may have left instead of hangin' around to fight them each 1 v 1 after he was done with you. Who knows?

[ QUOTE ]
I'm not a guy who builds his hero around pvp

[/ QUOTE ]
Step #1 for you should be using your second build to make a pvp build. It can help quite a bit.

Again, glad you're havin' fun and just wanted to provide two cents worth of responses to your question. Keep on fightin'!

True story, I enjoy RV and kickball now. I still think a lot of things are retarded, but meh.

What Empire said, read the PvP effects for your powers and build for damage, have an oh @#$ power or 2 as well. I'd say either take phase shift with force mastery (PFF) or ice mastery (hibern00b) and otherwise build for damage. Practice is key as is getting on a team.

You are ahead of the game since you seem to have the sportsmanship down and don't QQ about dying in PvP. If you are on Infinity look me up @slax @slax2 or @slax iii

Zones are a crappy place to learn pvp IMO. Get with some friends, preferably some who pvp regularly, and do some arena matches. Have a knowledgeable person set up matches balanced not only on the ATs/builds, but also on the skill level of the participants. Under controlled circumstances it will be much easier to get a feel for what you're doing wrong and you can get feedback from your friends.

This guy doesn't have a clue. I have no idea what "vet pvpers" he's talking about but the ones I've know for years can be identified, in general, by the fact that they are team players.

And the reason i13 pvp is so bad is because it tries to level the playing field by penalizing team play, particularly healing and buffing.

1 versus 3 and your a blaster? Your gonna die every time.

So, you need a team, not sure why the heroes didn't pick you up. Heh, in my experience heroes are actually less heroic than villains.

Also, check your build. You will need a heal, PFF or phase or hibernate, SS and SJ or Fly.

And, keep at it. Eventually, you will find how to play your build. This is beyond what people say how to play, it is more like a 'feel'.

AHHH a lotta good tips and pointers in here, I likes this.

Hey thanks for the props. Yeah I know how ugly pvp can get, you got immature kids, immature adults, people with power trips, ego trips, and just plain [censored] that can sometimes gravitate towards pvp so I like to let bring some lighthearted competitiveness to the game and true sportsmanship.(I did after all play lots of sports back in school)

Well its settled then. I was gonna have "build 1" as just my fun build, ya know super knockback in my kb specialty powers, and "build 2" was gonna be lots of IO sets but for pve only. Looks like build 2 will be for pvp as well.

All of you guys gave some really cool advice. I even appreciate Toe_tagger for "going easy on me" whatever that means. I didnt come in here with hate, not at all. lol I'm just a nice guy.

And Empire I DID notice that my kb powers werent, well, knocking guys back, and for me that was disheartening because I'm used to that being one of my main tools. In pvp, as a blaster, yeah, it seems slotting for damage is wusup. I WILL however respecc because I do have the Body Mastery pool but not enough slots in Force of Nature, man I just slotted that pool all the way wrong.

Thanks again for the clarification on why theres so much anger towards pvp. Speakin of which, I even played a AE mission...162446?...last night, cant remember where I saw it at on the forums here, and it was a mock pvp type AE. And as HILARIOUS as it was, I still sensed a little bit of bitterness towards nonpvp pros and the new pvp system. Still, I had to admit it was pretty funny.

For knockback, hit first with a hold and then with your highest knockback mag power. It should work.

Of course there's bitterness. The game was basically destroyed to appeal to those non-PvP'ers. To get them into PvP. Well, that completely failed, and all that was accomplished was that lots of old PvP'ers quit.

And even after all that, the devs refuse to admit they made a mistake. So yeah, we're mad at them, and at the non-PvP'ers, who were kind of responsible for this. Not directly, mind you. They never asked for this crap. They simply didn't want to PvP. But indirectly, just by not wanting to PvP, they gave the devs the brilliant idea of I13.

All the complaining you see isn't technically even about the game. It's about the completely incompetent design team.

To the point that you came in here where I'm asking genuinely for help on a basic understanding and I have been very respectful and everyone else has as well, to start MORE hating on something that has nothing to do with my original topic. ROFLMAO again! Great job!

Dont know what a troll is, but that cant be me, I have a very good rep here in the forums and I've been getting some really good advice and clarifications on some things that I couldnt quite understand, mainly just from my lack of experiencing them myself I guess.

Keep the hate over in the PWNZ area.

Oh, and, thanks for tips from your earlier post! Appreciate it.

And I just read your post Supermax. Thanks for that. Yeah I could feel a little bit of tension here in the pvp area and I was wondering why? Even though I dont pvp on the regular but will soon be trying to get more into it, I gotta agree with you guys on that. There had to have been a better way to get more people into it other than changing all the powers around and stuff.

Yeah instead of hatin pvp and pvpers, I'm tryin to keep an open mind and maybe see what I'm missing because I've never really given myself time to get the hang of it, even after all these years.

First, people have mastered pvp. It's the fact that the devs choose to make it less intense and boring is what makes people mad.

Second, yes. It does make me angry. A level playing field means that we might as well all be npc's with brawl. Also a certain amount of skill should be needed for any pvp, without it, it's called PvE.

Third, yes we do. If they just happen to not be able to handle a certain amount of smach talk, competition isn't for you. Sorry, sports have a ref, we don't. In fact most of the time the angry situations you speak of are ignited simply because the new comer can't compete so they resort to verbal assault.

Fourth, wow. Just wow. Do you know half the pvp community? If so you should probably know alot more about pvp soooo yeah. Don't go around judging people and expect them to lay back and say oh he's new we'll just let it be. Something else to, so what if they sat back and didn't help you? The world of CoX isn't here to back you up whenever you need it, some people do have social communities within this game. It happens in PvE to!

Here's the overall perception of your attitude from my stand point.
Click me where it feelz gewd.

This is based off of the fact that you come in without obviously doing any real research other than getting beat up a few times and going "lol".

so anyway thanks again for those tips. It's just a game, why are you so angry? LOL<-------there goes those LOL's again. "HULK SMASH!!?" ROFLMAO!

now moving on, guys I did some arena pvp with a friend like you suggested and we talked about some things. now, she was a MA/SR scrapper, lots of sets on her, and we took turns to see how long it takes to do a certain amount of damage, what powers work best against what, and so on...again, I'm the eng/eng blaster/blapper.

well what one of the things I learned was this...inspirations can change the balance of the fight quickly. now i know you are thinking "well duh" lol. But here's the thing, inspirations cant be relied on because you run out, and in my case, very quickly.

However! It does seem like getting all around defense from IO sets is the way to go. had a great time in RV and although I'm still gettin destroyed the challenge is fun for folks like myself, I welcome it.

Also...LMFAO at heal suppression and some other crazy things that happened to my powers. I was like what the f***!?!

pvp pros, I now understand some of your frustration.

i don't think regular pvp'ers really have problems with rather that it is not much of fun to use new pvp system that is all...you should not forget it is a game and we play it for fun and not struggle under weird rules...i don't think if you bind arms and legs from NBA players and then let them move around would be a lot of fun for them for long time...

More players are always welcome, especially since devs banned half of the good players and the rest quit..sadly. We ran kickball yersetrday on freedoma nd surpsingly got 16+ players for it however it wasn't just what it used to be when good players did play this game . Why people are so unfriendly see next point.

Nobody gonna stop you from having fun but last tendency shows that newer pvp'ers due pvp itself being such a gabage think they are the best, don't respect older pvp'ers who actually know more, talk trash w/o being good and besides trust me it is not much of fun to "farm" new players. It gets boring pretty fast and not everyone got teacher attitude to explain newbies how this game works. *Hint hint* regular pvp'ers are annoyed...

Other point is you should realize a lot of highschoolers play this game, so it is normal that many of them want to be "cool kid". And since pvp is of course more competitive as pve there will be always a lot of smacktalk, griefing etc etc just to shine cooler than other person. You can be all mad and ragequit, or just ignore it, watch how other play and actually learn to pvp. Sometimes if you get lucky you might meet nice person and if you politely ask they might actually give you some tips and advices, but for most part i would just suggest you to watch, listen, get mids and play around the game, read boards etc....

Nobody was good from begin, there is always one who is better, you can try hard to be accepted or simply enjoy the game...

P.S. oh and don't listen to me i am worst pvp'er on CoH ^_^

insp management is a skill and takes time to develop. Its easy to do so in zone because you can PvE in the lulls to get some quick pills.

All around def on a blaster will fail. The SR scrapper had 10 times the def you can get from sets. The most common sets to go for from blasters are +damage +hp +recharge and +Acc in that order. Do not forget about KB protection either. More often than not acro is not enough in PvP.

Finally i agree totally that the new system is really really fail. With the power vacuum made by the exodus of older PvPers the new players are starting to think that being good in the new system involves some kind of skill. Where a team of all damage will beat a team of damage/debuff/buff/heal. Just kinda sad

this is a warning. DO NOT invest in or build for defense if you are going to PvP. Diminishing Returns practically caps your defense at 13~14 percent which is practically nothing against players who are constantly at 102% to-hit with 156% accuracy. The Best kind of survival is +HP, Phase Shift, Hibernate, Dull Pain like powers, Powers that give elusivity like Frozen Armor, Invisibility, Resistance based powers, and most importantly a Good escape (and chase) travel power. Defense is NOT on the list for your blaster AT.

However! It does seem like getting all around defense from IO sets is the way to go. had a great time in RV and although I'm still gettin destroyed the challenge is fun for folks like myself, I welcome it.

this is a warning.

End_Reitanna I agree with just about everything you said. The "cool kid" factor is apparent all over this forum as well. But fun is paramount when I'm gaming so I dont trip off the craziness for real. My playstyle is real laidback.

"I am not young enough to know everything". cant remember where I heard this quote from but I remember seeing it in somebody's sig somewhere. lol

Yeah I've actually met a few really nice/mature people that pvp. Again, I definately understand that when entering the pvp zone, anything goes. you kill me, you win. thats wusup. But I'll be back, hopefully with a different tactic or more purple inspirations, or a team lol.

And Syn and Neeto SAY IT AINT SO!!

I've searched around and researched and thats kinda where I was gettin the idea that IO defense on a blaster is a good idea. I was even told by a blaster in game that had some defense bonuses. But you know what I didnt consider? Maybe its only good pve side. Now, as for PVE, I gets BUSY! I'm pretty confident with more sets I'm good to go on the pve side but this pvp thing is like a puzzle, wrapped in an enigma, wrapped in fun, wrapped in confusion, wrapped in frustration, wrapped in bacon.

I'm still avoiding situations that cause me to be outmatched unless I have at least ONE person helping me. +Health, +regen, +rech seems ideal for a blaster like myself for pvp. I LOLed at myself trying to use "heal self" then trying to escape. Death came as a slow torture.

GREAT tips and insight guys, my mind is open for learning and understanding and I'm more equipped now and smarter for it. Thanks.

iirc it was castle's sig that held that charged bit of wisdom.

there was a slightly open window for defense sets in pvp that lasted approx 1 issue, and was then beaten into the ground with the flaming nerf bat until it was assured to be dead. like many things that get changed in this game, if it's too reasonable to be effective, then expect a flaming nerf bat.

until the suggested uses of powers in pve at least represent the same inherentness of the power in pvp, the learning curve is way to steep for the average player in time and research (flurry, i'm looking directly at you as an example of WTF) of things like diminished returns, why defense is abhored in this game, and dude, where's my mez/healz?
