Dear Market Gurus:

Dear Market Gurus:

Night before last I was looking at an IO recipe I actually wanted to use -- that is, not marketeering for money.

There was one available for sale at a level that suited me (mid-40s). The "last 5" had sold for:

3,400,000
1,100,000
1,100,000
** I forget **
** I forget **

But there were no bids at the moment, and one recipe in supply.

So I reflexively entered 5,500 and instantly bought the recipe.

Now I am having buyer's remorse. I could have made a smaller bid and gotten this recipe cheaper with a little bid creeping. Did I get ripped off?

Signed,

Cool Hand Fluke

I wrote this mostly because I found it amusing that I blundered into a deal like that, but it's worth noting that odd things happen in the market pretty frequently. Every once in a while I pick up a Mako's Bite for a few hundred, and stuff like that. Despite the best efforts of the Ebil, the market isn't always priced out of reach.

I later noticed several purchases after mine were for one or two million+, so my grab was purely random luck and not some price trend.

That never happens to me.

That was mine. I mistyped it. I meant to list it at 5,500,000.

Please meet me in game to refund me. Thanks

if I want something with zero outstanding bids I always throw up one super low 'joke' bid just to see what happens, and every once in a while I get a spectacular deal!

One of my friends puts everything on the market for 1inf. He doesn't bother looking at the last bids and doesn't like fees, so he lists everything for 1.

Fascinating, considering the fees show up anyway.

Sorry, I was busy keeping purple prices out of reach of the casual player, so they stop playing their Warshades. I will immediately rectify this shortcoming by creating the DeJoJo cartel and putting a 2 million inf price floor on all common and uncommon IO's.

Thank you for reminding me to try harder and charge more.

You totally got ripped off. I make it a habit to start my bidding at 1 inf and bid creep by 1. I allow each bid to stay on the market for a minimum of 90 seconds because during peak hours the market server can be slow. I have been using this method for 9 months on an Armegeddon recipe I'm aiming to buy; it can be a little annoying raising my bid by only 40 inf an hour, but I take solace that when I finally get it I will have gotten the best possible price.

You know, as soon as you buy it, someone will post one for less inf than you paid. You really should start bidding from 1 again, to make sure you do not buy before the best possible price becomes available.

Yup, lol. He'll still pay 10%, regardless of listing price.

You need to work on your "ebil".

This cant be a serious post.
You honestly feel you got ripped off becasue you won an item valued at 1 mil+ for the low cost of 5k?

It's not a serious post. But there is that little twinge of surprise at bidding ssuper-low and getting it right away that says "ya know...I coulda gone a shade lower..."

That's exactly it.

It's like anytime you bargain. You offer, and the seller says "Sold!" immediately. You begin to think "Hey, I could have paid less for this?"

I'm glad someone else had a similar reaction to the OP… I read it as "hahahha I ripped someone else off and made out like a bandit. Please praise my low-bidding skills."

Seriously though, regardless of the previous sale prices for an item, you should always start your bidding at 1 and increase in increments of 5 to ensure you don't overpay like the OP did here.

Have you ever had a thought, laughed at yourself, and shared it with friends?

... guess not. Yesterday I was on a team with 4 OTHER blasters, a tank and a TA/A defender. And just for one second I thought "I should slot range in my attacks, so I can beat them to the punch."

According to you that's gloating about my faceplanting skills.

I'm only 20,000,000 bids away from that purple recipe!

…maybe not, but it does happen sometimes. Maybe I misinterpreted the intent of the OP, but that does happen from time to time, as you may be aware.

I guess I don't follow your analogy re: faceplanting, but whatever.

Trust me, it's well worth the time when you finally get that item for 103,222,256, and know you didn't overpay by more than 4 inf.

Mako's Bite was my niche for a loong time. It is very easy to buy them up at around 100K and re-sell them for millions. Just look for the ones with zero bids (One in the set is unprofitable though - ???/End ? ).

I think the turn around is quite slow so marketeers tend to go on to more profitable stuff. But for the patient, Mako's can deliver very high margins.

Well, it wasn't my intention to be a jerk. But there is a serious point to the topic. Market forum advice has consistently been "let bids sit a long time and you'll get your recipe more affordably" and that's absolutely true in my experience. Conventional complaints from many players have been "Everything is priced too high by marketeers."

What little topical value my thread offers is to show that there are affordable, even ridiculously cheap, short-term items available every once in a while if you hunt around for things without many bids on them and place a bunch of trial bids. You don't have to get into a bidding war and make "do or die" bids for everything; I have had some success just plugging in a few bids and going "huh" and moving on if the item doesn't fall into my lap.

You can snap up cheap stuff this way without long waits. Never the super-desirable or high-traffic stuff, maybe; but the market isn't completely wrung dry by experts snapping up every possible recipe. Keep your eyes open and look through things you might need.

I always bid 100 if there are 0 outstanding. Scored all kinds of things that way.

I always list my junk at 5 just to see how much people will pay for it.
