Discussion: Interviews Galore!

Congrats, guys.

The Invention System was probably my favorite addition in COH history, too.

Great interviews. Love the hints.

Don't make us pay for more MA slots though, Posi. I'm not keen on the idea (and I love the booster packs and character slots). Worse, I would hate to read the inevitable threads on this topic. Just benevolently give us a new slot or two down the road (maybe unlockable via MA badges? maybe a merit sink? something ingame).

One thing that actually made my heart sad was the idea of a sequal I know it would be nice and all, but I dont wanna leave the good old CoH behind in search of a better version

Besides that I loved the rest

I wonder if and when we'll hear about those "surprises" that they are holding on to; and then when we'll actually see them in the game.

I'm guessing when the competition heats up but...*shrugs*

Now that is one that stuck out for me.

@Sermon - Honestly, I dont' think they have a lot of choice in the matter.

You pretty much wind up with one of the following scenarios:

A) You give the slots away up front, for free - possible technical issues aside, you're essentially asking for it to be even more difficult to find content worth playing, because those who don't spend much time thinking about their arcs can now put out even more.

There's also the matter of "How many slots do we get?"

2 more? 10? If they make you buy it, then it becomes self regulating. Only the people who actually give a crap about their work are going to shell out for it; that doesn't mean it's going to guarantee the content is any good; but I suspect it stands a better chance.

It also lets them create a potentially very large number of maximum MA slots per-user, while guaranteeing very few people will have all of the slots full. (And if there are technical issues, they're likely to actually have the funding immediately available to take care of said issues.)

B) You add them as vet rewards - This solves part of the problem, in that only veteran players would have more than the basic 3 slots; but in doing so you create the following problems:

Alienating new players. Architect above any system added to the game stands a good chance of drawing in new players, because it's something very few other games have, and none so easy to do. From a business standpoint that kind of gating would be ridiculously stupid.

It also does nothing to address quality of content. Just because you've played for 5 years doesn't guarantee you know how to write. (Despite my reg date I've been around since just after launch, albeit on 2 different accounts and with several breaks for other games).

And again you hit the slot number issue, how do you determine how many slots is "enough" to give a player? Do you add them to old vet rewards or do you add them to new ones, meaning only 5+ year vets get them?

C) You don't give away any slots except via Dev's Choice and HOF - Unfortunately this just isn't going to work. Dev's Choice is great, but getting that award is difficult because of what it requires not just from the author, but the dev team as well.

It also stops you from editing your work; which while understandable means its not a true 4th slot.

Obviously, unless we go back to how it was on Test (I personally would not mind this), it's going to be a rather rare award anyway, and doubly rare for people with multiple good arcs.

HoF, unless something's changed in the last week since I've been on break, every arc that's hit it has then been downvoted and booted right back out. There's a lot of factors to that I won't get into here, but basing a 4th slot's availability on community good will is obviously an iffy thing at best.

D) You do what Posi is suggesting - you have players buy extra slots just like character slots. Yes, it's inconvenient, and as someone with a rather low fixed income, I do find it annoying; but it also solves all of the problems above.

The only problem of course is that it will cause some forum whining (as all microtransactions do).

It's not a perfect solution, but I can't honestly think of a more feasible one.

As for the interviews:

I'm particularly excited at the possibility of a graphics overhaul. CoH looks pretty darn good honestly; but there are some things - particularly older costume pieces (mostly the launch ones) that have relatively low res textures; and some of the particle effects are clearly quite dated.

Such an overhaul could theoretically lead to stuff like Power Customization as well.

Obviously it all depends on how far such an upgrade would go; or if it even ends up happening (the wording suggests they're only looking at the possibility of it; not actually doing it for sure); but it's an exciting time for CoH I think.

One of the reasons I love this game honestly; I have never once felt that the developers didn't care. Mistaken on a given issue? Sure. But never has it been a question of apathy.

(Other games I've played I have sometimes had to question the developer's commitment to the project. I won't elaborate which games here for obvious reasons; but that's something I've never encountered here, and it's why I keep coming back.)

All told, I'm pretty jazzed about the next few months - particularly the I15 Architect Toolbox and keyword search. They might not sound particularly big to some; but the keyword search alone could be a big big deal; and I'm very curious as to what this toolbox entails. I'm hoping I can do stuff like find-and-replace with it and the like (I hate editting in text format.)

I think something like a onetime 200 merit cost for a new arc slot (or maybe 100, 200, 500 for successive slots) would be as restrictive as charging money but achievable ingame. Otherwise, they could offer an ingame option for people who want to go that route and a pay option for those who want it here and now.

200 tickets you mean? They fall like rain. 1000, perhaps. Or 2k.

I *am* for adding them to vetran rewards, but I also am for paying for them. It IS true that some people have more money than others, but frankly, I'm a *better writer* than most and should I have the money I'd love to be able to put out more than 3 silly, or serious, or whatever arcs at a time.

Also, there's really nothing against someone helping another person who's got a great idea and can't put it out, if they don't have a slot open. Publishing it *for* them, perhaps.

Of course, it'd be much better if we could *gift things* via paypal here...

I don't mine if they were to sell extra MArc slots, but exceptional creators should be able to earn or be awarded extra slots.

or E, they make extra slots unlockable in lots of other reasonable ways.

Get a dev choice mission, have a real extra slot. Not just that they move a mission out of your slot, but actually give you another slot.
Get a HoF mission, add yet another slot. Keep the slot even if you lose the HoF spot.
Have one of your stories get over 1,000 plays, unlock a slot. No badge, so there's less temptation to farm it. Just a slot.
Achieve some combination of MA related badges, unlock a slot.
Etc.

Yes, the total number of slots that someone could have would be much larger than it is now, but very few people will unlock most of those slots. At the same time, add in some automatic trashkeeper function so old, unplayed, poorly rated arcs disappear from the list of playable missions unless the author periodically renews them.

WOOT! I'm right in the middle of the pic used, especially noticeable in the ZAM article. I was all upset at first when I saw the pic with the Anniversary text since it was right on top of me, but then I saw it without and was quite happy. I'm the one with a purple mohawk and a kilt on (and yes, actually, I can use that description to describe my real self too). That is all. *does a happy dance*

Well, at least the publicity is good. Hooray for our side. Should be interesting to see how well this all plays out (no pun intended) for PS and CoH/CoV.

You should have some of these folks come and cover HeroCon 2009.

Yeah. You did say the same thing, but all the interviewers asked the same questions so I don't know what else you could've done.

The thing that really saddened me was the range of the new TF. Villains have been crying out for a TF either 30-35 where they have none or 40-45 where they now only have the ITF.

Could this not have been set up villain side, as a 40-50 that sets at 50 (heroes have Sara Moore with that range).

looking at the interviews, there will be a hero tf and a villain sf? where is the problem there? Did they specify a level somewhere I missed?

It's in the I15 announcement on our CoH/V site. The level range will be 45-50 for both hero and villain versions.

TBF Sara Moore is the one shard TF I like, only 2 hunts IIRC. I've thought the shard should be co-op for a long time.

And yes, the new TF was specified as 45-50.
