Second Generation Hero 99865
Rating 2 Stars

I ran this arc with a lvl 50 Ice/Ice Blaster on diff 3.

Overall this arc has some fun battles and a lot of interesting characters to look at, but ultimately the story is disjointed and has no flow. There are a lot of custom characters with a variety of powers that are usually fun to fight. Unfortunately the action is very inconsistent and some of the enemies need to be fixed.

Mission 1 starts off quite well the Ally is good and the enemies are fun to kill. Custom critters look ok. Option ambush at the end is cool.
Mission 2 is a ramp up I believe, it may have loaded bugged but I doubt it. Enemies start off blue and then are orange by the end, that's not good. Enemy dialogue is ok, not great. Gargoyle needs to be fixed IMO. While rooted he moves like a snail, as a range damage char I killed him without ever taking any damage. I thought at first there weren't enough blues left in Paragon to punch through his def, but he died eventually, without ever having gotten near me.
Mission 3 has an epic battle vs Baphomet. He pawned me at first and ultimately finding a way to kill him was fun. Unfortunately he appears suddenly without any earlier references. If he was suddenly appearing to stop me from getting the armor, that wasn't well conveyed, just assumed.
Mission 4 it is impossible to keep Manitcore with you. Its not your fault, I lose him in every mish he appears in. Manitcore was obviously useless.
Mission 5 has a somewhat interesting Ally.

This arc feels like "a bunch of things that just happen". There is some storyline here, but it is pretty thin and many other things just happen in the meanwhile. The Protean Fang and Ripshock look great, but the other custom critters are dull. Orbweaver is too soft, needs some D, or more powers, he was dead everytime before the first Merc even arrived. Ripshock and Suntiger were fun to kill.

Why not five stars? The storyline is not engaging. Custom critters leave something to be desired. A lot of things just suddenly happen. Manticore is useless. Gargoyle battle is silly.

Dragonslay, thanks for taking the time to play my arc, and the time to to write up a review.
I knew I was stepping into the dragon's maw, since you said you preferred shorter arcs.
I'm still very glad to get the perspective of someone who prefers a quicker story.

[ QUOTE ]
I had a real love/hate relationship with this arc. At times I really hated it and wanted to quit at other times I was truly engulfed in it.

[/ QUOTE ]

hm. well, at least it evoked feeling.
I apologize for the frustrating moments.

[ QUOTE ]
Rescuee says "I owe you words." ???

[/ QUOTE ]

fixed that. was working on some semi-archaic dialogue for the Warrior. Didn't work out well. Restructured that line totally.

I note you didn't like the contact, and called the dialogue bad. Well, I was going for capturing the voice of Alexander of the Warriors. He does talk in the canon arcs like he thinks he's a character in a classical heroic epic. I'd guess that comes across as cheesy to some. I"ll scan over his stuff again and consider options for toning it down. I may keep it as is, but it deserves review.

[ QUOTE ]
Mission 3 is another good mish, not great. Contact gives way too long an explanation as to why KoA chose Croatoa. Is he trying to convince himself? 'KoA are in Croatoa because of its huge magical potential' period, would have been fine for me.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ah. Well, I wanted to make it clear a couple of things.
1) that the Avatars were being fueled by mystical energy based on violence and death. The characters are based on mythological figures. If someone was tempted to say "SHE wouldn't do THAT", then the nature of the mystical energies explain the Avatars being more aggressive, power-hungry, or evil than some "fans" of the myths might expect.
2) wanted to allow for the Knives not being big players in the magic scene. Having to avoid the stomping grounds of people like the Circle or even the Pantheon.

[ QUOTE ]
This mish would be better if I was rescuing anything but Malta, malta are evil, i hate them, i say let the KoA win if it means less malta in the world.

[/ QUOTE ]

I can see that. Although, it's not so much you are saving the Malta, as that the Malta are in a tight enough spot that THEY have to work with you.

[ QUOTE ]
Mission 5 is good, again not great. Archery (lethal) is a very highly resisted dam type in the game making this battle underwelming after great mish 4. I know Archery matches the charac; its just an observation.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, that's something I've been worried about, making the final battle significant but not too tough.
Currently, she's Archery at Extreme and Trick Arrow at Standard.
Any thoughts on how to make her a better fight for general?
I was thinking of taking Trick Arrow up to Extreme too. But might just make her more annoying, rather than more effective. Although, those -Resist debuff may help her with those who resist her lethal arrows. Another option might be to replace her Trick Arrow with a melee secondary of some sort...

[ QUOTE ]
This is an average arc IMO that has the potential to be a four or even a five star with some reworking.

[/ QUOTE ]

Hm. well, given that you prefer shorter arcs, I'll count that as a win.
I've had other comments from players that love the level of detail and enjoy immersing themselves in the story.

I find myself wishing you had played my other arc "Escalation". a lot shorter maps, no clues, less verbose contact. My fault for posting both arcs in your thread. I shall live and learn. (Not that I would want the better rating per se, but I think you would have enjoyed it more).

Again, thank you for the review. I think I learned a lot about how missions and stories are evaluated by someone who looks at them quite differently from how I do. That will be very useful as I mull over how to approach my 3rd arc, whatever it turns out to be. Maybe I can make that story appeal to a different audience than my first one.

Thanks a ton for the input! Yeah it's bugged on that map. I will pull it and do some changes to the issues.
"Story disjointed"? Did the opening dialogue not load for you? It should have given you the reason WHY you were doing this. Sigh. It is a long intro (capped the character allowance in the description so that may be causing the text not to load). I will fix gargoyle ( had him as an obvious Stone/Mace due to his makeup but if rooted is causing him to be a pain then I will change him slightly thanks for that!).
Baphomet has bugging issues and the GM's have been told. Loads at the appropriate point 1 time out of 5 or so. He is part of the ambush to prevent you from escaping with the gear. Grrr!.
Manticore was changed but he sucks on follow (think thats an issue for everyone who uses him since you only get to pick the AV Manticore from CoV not the CoH version).
Orbweaver will be changed.
Thanks again!

If you get the time and you don't mind running a 5 story arc that takes about an hour to an hour and half, The Unborn Conspiracy: The Council of Thorns is an arc of mine I wouldn't mind feeback on.

Also, if you want someone to run arcs with you to help with reviews, send @puhma an ingame tell and let me know. I'd be more than happy to help at any level.

Trying to get more feedback (5 plays to date, and up on the other two review threads, but it looks like the other folks are still swampped as the only return review I received was an 'Arc Trade'). So, if/when you get a chance I'd like to see what you think (and to be upfront, it does have a Defeat All in there, but using small maps).

Title: Is it Live or is it Memory-X
-------------------------------------
Story Arc ID: 70210
Author’s Global Chat Handle: @Armsman
Length: Very Long (5 missions)
Alignment: Heroic

Story Description: The 5th Column is building a device to control the world. Can you save the world from TOTAL DOMINATION?! (Hey it worked to get my Villians and Vigilantes pen and paper RPG group interested back in the day.)

Designer Notes: The Arc can actually be soloed by most Scrapper, Tank and MasterMind builds. In testing, my Gravity/Force Field Controller made it through mission 3 solo with no issues, but starting getting defeats in mission 4; so if you’re a support class or a blaster, you probably need a team-mate. This arc is actually based on an adventure I ran players through in the “Villians & Vigilantes” pen and paper RPG a number of years back. I was surprised at how much of the original ‘flavor’ I was able to keep in adapting it to fit in the CoX universe. There was only really one element I couldn’t include due to MA limitations.

Facing Chaos 105163
Rating 4 Stars

I ran this arc with a lvl 50 Ice/Ice Blaster on diff 3.

Overall this is a very well written, well paced action packed arc. There are a few custom critters with a plethora of PVE enemies found together in a unique way. Contact dialogue was good, although a little long winded. In mish enemy dialogue was good.

Mission 1 is a good mish. I believe there are some grammatical errors in the contacts opening dialogue, might want to go back and double check. Riki Tiki Talli was a good battle.
Mission 2 was another good mish.
Mission 3 started off great, a bunch of easy alters to destroy all in a row to get the mish moving. Its a big map and the final EB is hard to find, but I didn't mind much since I felt like i had done so much already. EB was tough, but not ridiculous.
Mission 4 has a couple of EBs and Bosses to deal with that are fun to kill. The Huntress Rip Van Twinkle was very difficult to kill (obviously this arc is intended for teams, not solo; so no lowering of rating here).

The arc uses a bunch of commonly found enemies, snakes, yogurt donkeys, arachnoids, CoT, KoA and others and changes them into seeds of chaos. So you fight them as one enemy group. This was great fun and very creative on behalf of the author.

Why not five stars? Empathy ally was great, I really would have preferred her in the final mish. Map three is a little bigger than I prefer. Contact dialogue a little long winded.

Great job!

Something comes to Yarmouth 58812
Rating 5 Stars

I ran this arc with a lvl 50 Invul/EM tanker on diff 1 (I knew ahead of time there is a very tough EB at the end).

Overall this is just a great arc. This arc deserves Devs Choice IMO. It starts a little slow, but it grows on you, slowly, like coral. The first three missions have Coralax, which I dont find particularly interesting to fight. However, the story is so well written and interesting I didn't really mind. Custom critters appear in mish 4 and 5 and are fun to fight and have cool powers. Contact dialogue is well written. In mish rescuees dialogue is actually useful (a rare and wonderful thing).

I have friends in Wellfleet so I was eager to get started.

Mission 1 a little boring at first, but then when you see that boss. Wow, looks good and is fun to kill. Ally ok. Is boss set to "Back" ? I might have bumped into him before ally if I had been paying more attention.
Mission 2 i was a little worried when I first walked in, because that map and finding people have a long and bad history. However, freeing the other folks really breaks up the monotony and this mish is good. Before going in here contact says "their wounded", maybe you meant to say "the wounded" ??
Mission 3 Great map. A lot to do while leading Geneva out, but not overpowered, another good mish.
Mission 4 is where the silver turns to gold. Ally is great. Custom critters are great. Enemies are tough and have interesting powers, they are fun to kill. This would get ugly on high settings. Titus boss is fun to kill.
Mission 5 Great map, except its the same one as mish two, I didn't like that. One mutated says "with the ***** gift even we could take 'em." maybe "we" should be "you" (give it a reread, not sure if I misread it). Final EB (really a AV) is awesome. Tough even on the lowest diff he is fun to fight.

This arc is tough. The final EB is extreme and this arc needs a disclaimer (if it doesnt have one already).

Why does this arc deserve five stars? Because the story is great. It is well written and delivers a sense of urgency that is normally very hard to convey in a game. The in mish rescuee dialogue is useful. The custom critters look good and are fun to kill. The story stays so well in line that the issues I mentioned above were not enough to knock a star off this gem. Get a team and run this, it is great fun.

Great great job!

I thank you for your review. I thought I had caught all the grammatical errors but Microsoft Word isn't exactly a perfect system.

Sorry for the long windedness. Just was so much explanation and I couldn't think of a way to sneek into clues and what not. Plus trying to build some kind of personality for the contact.

I had thought about having the empath show up again in the final mission but I decided against it. I had no room to sneak her in and seeing as the old man already lost one child, I don't think he would be willing to risk her in the area where the strongest sources were.

Wow, thank you. I'm really glad you enjoyed the story.

[ QUOTE ]
I have friends in Wellfleet so I was eager to get started.

[/ QUOTE ] Believe it or not, as this whole story is sort of a giant tip of the hat to Lovecraft (Dr. Herbert Munoz's name is actually a mashup of Herbert West from Herbert West: Reanimator and Dr. Munoz from Cool Air), I just looked at a few maps of New England and picked the most Lovecraft-ish name I could find. Yarmouth just strikes me as a very eery name for a place. It has a great sound to it I think. </fanboy>

[/ QUOTE ] Actually impossible to have happen. As I've had severe problems with the front/middle/back placement on outdoor maps I made it so the mission spawns things in sequence instead. The boss doesn't spawn until you find the ally, so from a story perspective he's telling you where the boss is.

[ QUOTE ]
Before going in here contact says "their wounded", maybe you meant to say "the wounded" ??

[/ QUOTE ] Was meant to specifically be referring to the Longbow's (their) wounded, but the makes more sense I think. Will change, thanks.

[ QUOTE ]
Mission 3 Great map. A lot to do while leading Geneva out, but not overpowered, another good mish.

[/ QUOTE ] I'm glad you liked how I had it set up. I did a lot of tweaking around to try and get it 'just right'. I really tried to put as many fun things to do in each mission as I could without really bogging things down as I think you noticed in the last two missions. I'm glad it worked like I was hoping.

[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ] The map bit is very unfortunate. In my mind both 3 and 5 work best as that type of map and so in order to save space (the arc is at 99.95% capacity) I have the final map set to random.

I'd intended the 'we' comment to give an indication that the speakers were well aware that they weren't really all that powerful but that they were deluded enough to think they could take out the heroes/villains who'd be running the arc. Replacing it with a 'you' would convey pretty much the same sentiment, and it'd possibly give a few folks a chuckle to boot. I'll definitely think about it, thanks.

I really tried my best to put together a solid story arc that people would find fun and perhaps a little challenging and it really makes me happy to know you liked it as much as you did. Thanks again for the review.

And yes, the arc does have an EB/AV disclaimer, but I might need to add in a bit more as it's been mentioned in the few comments I've had thus far.

I ran this with a lvl 50 Ice/Ice Blaster on diff 3.

Overall this is a very quick fun 2 mish arc. It can hardly be called an arc because it is about ten minutes long and the 2 mishes are unrelated. It is fun. If you can run it without failing both mishes please send me a PM.

Mission 1 I failed because I couldn't find Manticore. I'm pretty sure he's not on the map. Hahaha
Mission 2 I whacked all the moles on the map and then more appeared, so I whacked them, then more appeared so I whacked them, then the timer ran out. I failed. I'm pretty sure twenty breakfrees is the most a tray can have, since I was held or stunned most of the time.

Both missions are cute and fun. This arc can actually be a good distraction for a team while the leader is looking for more teammates.

Why not five stars? No connection between the two mishes. You always fail. Arc needs a third mish (bad news comes in threes you know).

I dream of Fusionette 86187
Rating 2 Stars

I ran this arc with a lvl 50 Ice/Ice Blaster on diff 3.

Overall this is fun quick comedic arc about a Paragon icon, Fusionette. The storyline is straight forward. The contact dialogue is funny at times.

Mission 1 is the best in the arc. Kill a thousand Crey Voltiac Tanks and get some info. Enemies with slow powers are always fun and challenging to fight.
Mission 2 is very fast and simple. I think it took about 90 seconds to complete.
Mission 3 was very disappointing to me. This easy arc suddenly becomes very hard. The first room is super exciting and yet a complete death trap. It is not immediately apparent whom is your enemy and whom is your friend. I realize this was intended, but that wasn't fun for me.

This is the type of arc that I can see being fun for some folks. It is meant to be run by a team and not solo, and as a team the action would get confusing and exciting. It's not for me though. I didn't find the last mish fun or funny. I had to kill Fusionette (granted they're clones) many many times, I was sad inside each time.

Why not five stars? There are a lot of small grammatical mistakes in the contact dialogue. Way too many to mention, enough even to bother even my thick skin, there are a lot of missing punctuations, singular/plural mistakes, etc etc. Mission 2 is uneventful. Mission 3 forced me to kill one of my favorite characters many times. The in mish dialogue is dull. There was no boss enemy behind it all, that was cloning Fusionette because he was madly in love with her and wanted more of her, or some such.

I ran this arc with a lvl 50 Thugs/Poi MM on diff 3.

Overall this is a very good arc. It has a well written story and good custom critters. Contact dialogue is good and there are a variety of enemies to kill. Missions flow together well. Custom critters were tough and fun to kill but not ridiculous. Final EB is very tough, but there is a strong disclaimer before hand, so its all good there.

Mission 1 kill CoT, rescue guy, kill Boss. Fine typical CoX mish.
Mission 2 Custom critters look good. Hilfe looks great. I didn't like Kampher; that head looked weird on that body. Dark powers are tough, but fit the story and look of the critters.
Mission 3 Council, rescue Tophat, again another fine mish.
Mission 4 contact says ". . . as much as might kill . . ." needs the word "it" in that sentence. Good mish. Damn that tar.
Mission 5 has a great battle against a tough EB.

Overall fun and interesting to play. Storyline is good. Custom critters are good. Thanks for the gift at the end, that was cool.

Why not five stars? Feels very much like a stock CoX arc. There are no super cool moments that make you go 'all right!'.

It's hard to find a good open map without any hidey holes to put a bunch of objectives. Mission 2: There are 5 Mole bosses to defeat to "win". Third mission is coming Thurs and will not have a timer, so it won't be failable. Thanks for the notes, though there won't be any connection between the missions, it's just a compilation more than an arc.

The entire story was based on getting back the Oblivion Lens. A lot of MA arcs start off about one thing, then are suddenly about something else, then about someone trying to get it. Your story stayed on focus. I visualized a physical item, a camera lens actually, glowing with magic and its power was unknown to our world. The contact continually reminds me that its the lens I'm after and I have a reason to go back in and risk my life. I had a real sense of "there is something tangible that I needed to recover to protect my world."

Went through 3 proofreaders and they all apparently lied to me. They are so fired

Thanks the suggestions and comments. I don't team much myself and I been able to test this with my scrapper and corrupter. Going to fix that when time permits. As for the motive, it's in the souvenir. I don't know about you, but ever since Fusionette went out and pissed an entire room plus AV, evidently natural selection isn't working so I had to correct it

Thanks for playing!

I thought I had caught all the grammatical errors but Microsoft Word isn't exactly a perfect system.

This is a total aside, but don't trust Microsoft Word for checking grammar--or even spelling, really. You still have to do it yourself.

I have two grammar quizzes I give my remedial writing college students that each consist of a paragraph of ten sentences, each sentence with its own grammar problem. Microsoft Word caught two errors out of the ten. On average, my students caught seven errors out of the ten.

In other words, you'd just do better to hand it to some random guy than trust Word's grammar check.

Dragonslay, I'd love to have you review my story arc. I've had five votes so far (all five stars), but have yet to get a public review on these boards.

My story arc info:

Arc Name: "The Once and Future King Sac"
Arc ID: 99394

Faction: Custom group (The Entropy)
Creator Global/Forum Name: @KingSac
Difficulty Level: Medium to High (depends on how you handle EBs)
Synopsis: A strange temporal anomaly has been detected, and for some reason, it seems centered around the hero, King Sac. A hero is needed to investigate the disturbance before what seems like a harmless ripple ends up cascading across the universe.
Estimated Time to Play: 45-60 minutes (5 missions)

This is my first story arc, two weeks in the making. (Wanted to make sure it was just right.) Personally, I can solo this in 20 minutes with my blaster at Heroic (heading straight for the objectives), though the last mission will spawn two AVs in bigger groups/higher difficulty settings.

The arc is meant as a mini-TF and can a bit on the easy side in regards to EBs, but can be a little difficult with some mez from the mobs. Again, depends on AT and play style, but hopefully people will find this enjoyable. Feedback welcome.
