Looking for Prayers and positive thoughts
I've been vaulting positives your way the whole time. I won't stop until we end this with good news.
GREAT NEWS!!! Well, all things considered, it IS great. Annas results came back and it puts her at Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, Intermediate Risk, which means to us that she should only need chemo for about 3 months and the docs are hoping that will do the job and get rid of the tumor. The secondary tumor in her eye should be the first thing that goes away, followed by the lesions on her liver.
She will receive the chemo in 4 stages, broken down into 3 5 day stays at the hospital. The first stage begins tomorrow, she will be admitted, receive the first chemo dose, and receive more chemo each day of the stay with the docs monitoring the tumors reaction to the chemo, her heart, hearing, liver and kidney functions and everything else that needs monitoring.
Then, we will bring her back into the hospital in 21 days, because her white blood cells need to replenish, she will be given a blood test and if they have replenished, she will begin the next stage. If not, she will come back in a week for another blood test.
This will be repeated 4 times, and if all goes according to plan, the chemo will have done its job and she will be cancer-free.
However, if the tumor does not respond to the chemo, the docs will need to decide on whether she needs any bone marrow, stem cell or platlate transplants, surgery or additional rounds of chemo
or all of the above.
So, thanks again to Guardian and the CoH Podcast crews, all those positive energies are doing their jobs well and I cant thank you enough.  Please keep all those prayers, thoughts, and energies flowing
.. it helps so much.
Thanks,
SS

Hello all,
Anna came home yesterday following the first stage of chemo. (I would have written this then, but was too tired for thoughtful typing). She seems to be doing pretty good. The docs say her blood levels before we left were on the low side, but still within a good range. She looks to have a slight loss of appetite, but were hoping it gets better the longer shes home. She is definitely eating more then she was at the hospital, but she was on an IV as well as having formula.
She is picking right back up from where she left off developmentally, the day before she was admitted for all of this, she just started waving. Yesterday she started clapping, sitting up on her own (she probably would have done this sooner, but other the being picked up and carried, she has pretty much been bed-ridden with so many tubes and cables sticking out of her the boys have come to call her Cyborg Anna).
Due to the nature of the chemo, we need to take her temp twice a day to watch out for ANY fever (a low grade fever could be life threatening for her) and she will need to see the oncologist twice a week, every week to monitor her blood counts. My wife is going to be giving her the daily shot to keep her white blood cell count up (my poor wife, I cant even stand to see someone on the TV getting a shot, meanwhile, SHE watches CSI just for the gory spots, I think).
Since one of the side effects of the chemo is a high susceptibility to infection and just about everything else, Anna will be missing out on the holidays, Her mom and I trading off who takes the boys to the family events, based on whos family it is. Tonight the boys will be going with Mom to their Aunts house for trick or treating goodness.
Normally I try NOT to have photos of my kids on the internet
.EVER
..but I thought I would share a picture of Anna at home following her first round of chemo.

The main reason I am sharing this picture is to show her black eye. Normally, in neuroblastoma, it shows as two good size black eyes, notice that she only has one black eye, and it isn't all that large at all. We waited four weeks to have her looked at due to it fading and coming back. Please, if your child has a black eye that doesn't seem to go away after two weeks, have them seen by their doctor....and mention neuroblastoma....not every doctor sees it in their career.
Hope I did that right...
Thanks as always,
SS

Yeah, I'm right there with you. Maybe we're being over-protective parents, but sometimes, it seems like that's the only way to make sure you child(ren) is/are safe...

Yes, don't put things off. I had a similar experience, where my four year old daughter was complaining that her eye was hurting and bothering her. At first, we assumed it was allergies, and gave her some OTC medicine for that. It seemed to go away, but then came back, this time with a stye on her lower eyelid. Her eye was getting red, and she was complaining about it hurting again. At that time, we were in the middle of moving out of the apartment we lived in and into our first house. We gave her a rice sock compress, and told her we'd take her to the doctor right after we were moved in.
That was almost too late. We took her to the doctor, and they found some kind of bacteria on her actual eye, eating away at it! They immediatly checked her in, and prepped her for surgery. They had to scrape the bacteria off of her eye. After it was over, she had to wear glasses for about 2 years to strengthen her eye.
I know it's not exactly what you're going through, but I do totally understand where your coming from, having a little one in the hosptial, then having to watch over her once she's home.
Once again, you have all my positive vibes, thoughts, wishes, and prayers! Keep us updated on Anna's recovery!
