Discussion: City of Heroes Facebook Page

You do realize, all you're doing is proving his point?
Probably not, I'm guessing.
For the hearing impaired, then:

Statesmonkey Sez: Lighten up! It's a game, for Lincoln's sake!
Also: Six years of casual play begins to look an awful lot like one year of hardcore play.
Ugh Facebook. I am close to being forced to putting Lighthouse on ignore because of the degeneration of CoH PR to that of Facebook.

Are you serious?
Setting up a "Become a fan of..." page on Facebook takes about ten minutes.
It's not a Facebook application. It's a special page where people can press a button to show that they like something, and where they can meet other people who pressed the same button. You seriously find this offensive?
Edited - sorry, see above post

I can't express how silly this is. Yes, I am thrilled that CoX is doing more to get its name out there. Facebook though? Facebook and Myspace are abominations.
Personally, I have never seen any Facebook or Myspace site that didn't look like crap. They are always either completely bland, or have so much CRAP all over them, that you can't see anything useful.
Hopefully no one at NC^2 is spending much time working on this. I think it is a complete waste of time. Unless they have decided to completely scrap the Vault. Then they might as well have some other community site.

I'm really loving the irony of someone who runs around in a computer game pretending to be a superhero with incredible powers being "above" Facebook and MySpace users.
I guess we all have to be better than someone else.
Seriously, it probably took Koschej about ten minutes to set up an account and another ten to write the copy for the page. Even if you "cannot abide" looking at a website, there are lots of people who can.
It's free and it's fun. Why are you mad again?
I added, though I don't really care for face book. Spend much more time on Myspace.
I created an account. I made myself a fan. I *still* don't understand the point of FaceBook.
*sigh* So old....

Never said I was mad. I said it was silly and I don't see the point of it. The Facebook and Myspace "phenomenon" doesn't make sense to me. The IDEA of social networking, fine. The problem is, a large portion of them are horrible eysores, and quickly lose any semblance of usefulness as more and more junk gets added to them.
I also don't see any irony in my feelings towards Facebook and Myspace. I don't think I am "above" them. I just don't LIKE them. I don't like the implementation of them, and I don't see the point in extending effort in maintaining a page like that for the game. It does not seem like an effective form of advertising. I also said that if they don't spend much effort on it, then fine. Doesn't change the fact that I find the idea, and the sites themselves, to be silly and pointless.
Mad about it? Not at all. It doesn't affect my enjoyment of the game, and since I don't plan on participating in that portion of it, it really doesn't impact me, other than as a conversation piece.

I have a feeling that all this FB dislike comes from the fact that it is very popular, and you know, no one wants to be a conformists, no matter what

Okay. 138 million Facebook users disagree with you. And 955 of them as of this post don't seem to think it's a "complete waste of time" to push the "Become a fan" button on the page that Koschej took a few minutes to make.
Also, why does everyone think this is a City Vault replacement? They don't have anything in common, except that if you asked for a description of both they might share the word "social." The City Vault is a much, much, much bigger project in scope than this Facebook page; it would be a full-fledged web application.

Honestly, I think you are reading far more vitriol into my comments than was there. The fact that Facebook has all those members is not entirely relevant. The percentage of those users who are likely to stumble upon the CoH Facebook page, and then buy the game because of it, is minuscule. That is assuming that you consider all those millions of users to be actual distinct users.
Do you remember the CoX Myspace page? How well did THAT work out? Ever hear anything about it nowadays? That's kind of my point.
As far as the City Vault thing... no idea, other than it seems like a splitting of effort and usefulness. Once the Vault is available, what will be the point of the Facebook entry?

Everyone and their dog beat me to the Facebook COH Fan Page.

To be completely honest, I'm not sure what the point of the "become a fan of" pages are, either. Facebook shows you your friends' recent activity on the main page when you log in, and sometimes it tells me that my friends have become fans of Apple or Barack Obama or whatever, so I guess that's a little bit of good publicity.
But I think the main point is to give people a way to show their friends what they're into. It's an identification thing.
It's not going to double the server population, but it might get a few people talking, and it makes people feel good when they get to talk about stuff they like.
Not very "effective" in any sense, as you indicated, but harmless, fun, and at a low cost to the devs.

The vast majority probably are - Facebook is kinda militant about rooting out fake accounts and killing them off. Whether or not they're active users is anyone's guess.

How is taking advantage of a free form of advertising a waste of time? This is a no-lose situation for them. If nothing is gained, they spent only the time it took to set up the page, and life goes on. If there is a buzz created, however small it might be, they win.
I would rather they try something different than do nothing, which is pretty much what has happened up until the last year. Especially if it doesn't cost them anything.
Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.

If it weren't for facebook there would be a lot of people from high school that I wouldn't be in touch with, and for that, it is an amazing tool in my eyes, no matter how bland or useless some might see it as.

Eh, I did it just for CoH. So if anyone from Liberty wants to add me go right ahead. I deleted my myspace along time ago.I really have no use for these type of things.

I'm not into Facebook either, but I'm guessing the way it works is via the friends. You check up on an old friend from High School, see that friend is adverising CoH, and decide to check the game out. Given how easy it was to set up, it only needs to pull in a couple of new customers to be worth it. So why not do it?

Obviously, you're generalizing. Lots of people are hidden on Facebook. Unless you're my Friend, you can't see my page. I have very little applications on my fb page. I find that they are too busy and contrived.
The good fb and MySpace profiles are usually the ones that no one ever sees.
[/ QUOTE ]
No, I'm not generalizing. The fact that all the "good" pages are hidden means, they don't count. I don't care about private pages, because I am never ever going to see them. I base my opinion on the vast majority of sites that I have run across. Have I seen a vast majority of all the Facebook pages? No. I don't generally troll Facebook pages. I have however run across Facebook pages that are linked to from other places I visit. In the vast majority of those cases, the page ends up looking either generic, or like some epileptic monkey was let loose with an html editor. In either case, they seldom look professional. This includes things like Myspace pages for movies, and actors. Sites that are "official" and advertised on TV or whatever.
People using them to actually keep in touch with friends or whatever? Hey, go for it. I don't like the sites, but I don't have anything against you using them. I just think it is a silly way for a company to spend marketing money.
