Any particular reason for this? Is server space limited?

Server space is limited, plus we've noted page display issues due to large graphics on pages (Unchainer's page went completely blank when a 2MB graphic was linked into it.)
Also consider that even though your browser will resize graphics as specified by the wiki code, the full file has to be transmitted... which results in higher bandwidth fees, especially for popular pages. Also the system has to index all the files in the database (what links where, page histories, etc) and files that aren't used will just take up space there too.
