Discussion: Lead Writer Talks about Issue 12
Contextual dialog... This is the start of something wonderful! It reminds me of the old book series "Choose Your Own Adventure". The story itself has several twists and turns with each decision taking you in a different direction.
If this is the direction City of * is going then it will be a great time indeed! Stories would no longer have one outcome.. even more than if you fail the final objective of the last mission. You could change the mission halfway through or even by the second mission!
This is great.

when in doubt play dead
something along the lines of divide and conquer

Edit sorry the second one should be: If you seek peace, prepare for war
When men are full of envy they disparage everything,
whether it be good or bad.

Thanks. Hm... now what to choose next week in open beta...

Contextual dialog
A great example of this is the Sybil you speak with at the beginning of Imperious first mission in Cimerora. She has three different dialog states depending on where you are in the mission.

I hope I'm not the only one who got this.
The bit about the invention that could change the landscape of the game. More then a respec, a shivan , a heavy, or a nuke.
Not sure if that's really a good thing but I'll wait untill tuseday to see.
[/ QUOTE ]
Yeah, that's almost... ominous... Wonder if it's a useable peice (like an enhancement) or something that will change the story landscape of the game.
Also, this contextual dialog will be the death of anyone who is compelled to experience all[ the content of the game. Three whole options! And what happens when another person in themissions has three options?? That means playing the mission NINE times to get everything properly!

Um...yay?
Seriously...these Midnight Squad arcs sound most tasty.

When all failure be dead. (When all else fails, play dead). It's pseudo Latin; student humor; flunkus is not a Latin word.
If you want peace, prepare for war.
The die is cast.

Oh, Joe....
The Rikti did not hit magic users first. They knew nothing of earthly magic users since they didn't know magic themselves.
The Midnight Squad hit the Rikti really hard, and as a consequence, the Rikti redirected attacks to them them back even harder.
<ul type="square">The city's other heroes fought fiercely as well, although few were as spectacular as Statesman in their methods. The city streets swarmed with armor-clad invaders fighting toe to toe with costume clad heroes. The aliens had also brought in heavily armored hover tanks that were proving to be particularly deadly until a consortium of mages from the Midnight Squad cast a spell that turned them all inside out, leaving smoking piles of junk. Unfortunately, the aliens gave as good as they got. Even as they were congratulating themselves on their success, the magicians were engulfed in a wave of burning plasma that stripped their flesh to the bone in a fraction of a second.
Then when the Rikti went underground, they stumbled upon Oranbega and opened up a new magical frontline that hurt them, and so, they have been hitting the CoT back real hard.
<ul type="square">What no one could have expected is that it would be an alien invasion that both opened the way to Oranbega and simultaneously reinvigorated the Circle of Thorns. During the Rikti War, the extra-dimensional attackers used the subway tunnels and other underground chambers as bases of operation. They excavated more rooms as they needed them, using a variation on their portal technology. Apparently, the magical runes and protection spells hiding Oranbega from the rest of the world had no effect on technology from another dimension. The Rikti had accidentally discovered the vast underground lair of the Circle of Thorns.
Although most of the citys heroes are loathe to admit it, this unintended revelation may well have played a key role in turning the tide of the Rikti War. The Circle, long dormant, was not nearly as dead as many had imagined. The aliens found themselves not only fighting super powered heroes on the surface, but magic wielding, demon summoning fanatics down below. The now quite aged Baron Zoria himself led the charge at the head of his elite Thorn Wielders against the aliens, pushing them out of Oranbega and the surrounding caves.
"The image I have in my head is of a stodgy old Midnighter rolling a big crate out in front of the Freedom Phalanx. The lettering on the crate reads, The Arc of the Covenant. With a smile, the Midnighter asks the group of heroes, You gentlemen think you could put this dusty old thing to use?
This is a really bad idea, bringing anything into the game that has any form of religious connotation is a bad idea...
I hope the story is influenced by the arc and not the arc itself. "sigh" we'll see I suppose.

Sounds more like an image of an ancient artifact that's taken out from a warehouse where top people take care of such things....
There's no arc in Ark, but there is in an arc of electricity

You realize this is a joking reference to "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and not something that's actually going to be in-game, right?
One of the Natural contact starter missions in AP is similar, where you recover a crate with the same number stenciled on the side as the Ark had in "Radiers".

Do they ever want me to stop playing this game?
I am so there... the story side of this game is what does it for me, and I've been wanting more on the Midnight Squad since I started this game.

Dude, we got Joe Morrissey!!!
Oh yeah, Midnight Hour storylines are gonna be gewd :3
I was really dodgey about the midnight squad story arc for Villains. I thought we would be working for the midnight squad. Just with different missions. But now that I know that it's an EX midnighter, I feel much more at ease.
I had been extremely psyched about Midnight Hour Issue, then about 60 seconds ago I read the info in your link there and...
More Rikti huh...
/mini-rant
I love Rikti, but I don't love Rikti for breakfast, then Rikti for lunch, then some more Rikti for dinner...
Enough with the Rikti already. Reminds me of the Smallville series where they toe-jam in kryptonite in. Every. Freakin. Episode.
/mini-rant
But yeah, to say something positive, I guess I am still looking forward to anything else NOT Rikti in issue 12.
