What My Six Year Old Has Learned From CoX

Sister Flame's arc is one of those ones that just doesn't get old. Every once in a while, I'll come back to run it with a new character, or just one that hasn't seen it in a while, and it's always fun.

This time it was my FF/nrg Longbow defender, who was quite pleased to have an offense-happy blaster to cast shields on. As you can see, they had such a great time that afterwards they decided to have a bubble party!

Man, Sister Flame is tall! At some point, I'm gonna have to get the science booster so I can resize him to match the height of the longbow NPCs, although I have a feeling Sister Flame will still be taller than him.

edit: Hmm, that was a really big picture. Huge picture banished to here

Any chance that Sister Flame and posse will be coming to HeroCon? I can just imagine her in costume with a TON of gamers willing to make Clickey-Clack costumes just to follow her around. Or disco trolls.

I had debated taking Flame to HeroCon. On one hand, it would be a great experience for her and I know she would love it. On the other hand, she also has two siblings and a mom who might be bored if I took them or really non-plussed if I didn't

Thanks for all the great screenshots. Sister Flame really likes seeing them and see never gets tired of hearing "Sister Flame is tall". In her opinion, other people are just too short.

I also did try to talk her into going out as Sister Flame for Halloween, but no dice. Apparently she wants to be a princess. Bah... go figure.

Isn't sister Flame the Princess of Pyrotechnics?

Going back to the OP: This is an awesome story. I remember learning how to read, in part, via a computer game called Reader Rabbit. Anybody who says that computers and video games do nothing but rot the mind are sadly misinformed. Personally, I would never have thought of CoX as an educational tool, but apparently it can meet that need.

This is a quality story!

I'm so glad the story of Sister Flame made the forum migration, a few of us in The Handprints enjoy keeping up with your stories.

Just thought I'd express how popular the story of your daughter is in this little part of the EU.

I have read this with the biggest smile on my face. You have shown that age ratings while appropriate are not in need when parents join forces with their offspring. Wonderful!
And she has done well (nevermind her teacher's reaction, though I'd love to have seen that face heh).

My son's english flourished once he started playing the game. Where his grammar was more or less non-existent (we're dutch by the way), it took him just weeks to grow and be able to talk in team. At the moment his only draback is typing speed, so we more or less train that now by actually talking game ingame. It can be awkward at times, but a lot of fun too. Especially when he pulls stuff like standing there doing absolutely nothing (while being thehealer mind you..) to then pop into chat as I'm about to faceplant "Pretty cool, we haven't died once so far."

I can only then turn to him and smile at those moments

Keep everyone in the know of your adventures, I love reading this, it makes my day entirely!

*I vote for sticky*

There would have been quite a few upset NA people if this thread hadn't made the migration.

Yay, verily! This thread is should be shown to folks who think gaming for kids is bunk. It shows that with good parenting & supervision, kids can have a ball playing a game.

After reading that story I had to play the arc, and it was great! Nice work.

Greetings, true believers.

I was waiting until I had something interesting to post as an update and I am pleased to say that the time has come, but first.... some thanks are in order.

Thanks to all who has posted images of their characters with Sister Flame. She is still awfully humble about all the attention for arc has gotten, but she does like hearing me read the comments. I think the one that makes her laugh most often is "Boy, Sister Flame is tall".

Undead_Steve, your image really had her giggling. Then, I had to show her how to do even more emotes than what she does now. Let me tell you all, I may be the master of placing enhancements, but Sister Flame rules at using emotes. She tells me it is an easy way to communicate, especially when you are not a good typer.

Now, onto the most interesting part of the update. A co-worker, who is also a very good friend of mine, is also a CoX player. Even more so, the good man is also a pretty sharp writer. Recently, we engaged in an exchange of services and his service was this:

Comic Link (20 pages in a zip file): http://www.whatsupdark.com/resources...e_Issue_01.zip

Yep. A Sister Flame comic. My buddy played through Sister Flame's arc and I provided him a bit more details about her (for example, Sister Flame's ID is public and her job is that she teaches Fire Manipulation at Paragon University). He uses a program called Poser to do the models and I must say, Sister Flame has never looked so good. Needless to say, Sister Flame and I will be cuddling up with the comic tonight to read at bedtime. Maybe it is a sign I need to get moving on that Sister Flame story I have been promising my lovely daughter for ever so long.

A short update, but I hope you enjoy the comic as much as I did.

Until Sister Flame hits 30, keep the peace!

As all things Sister Flame, brilliant! Although Fudor has quite the disco bulge...

Hehe, a nice way to end my evening ^^
People who claim games are bad for people are wrong. Games CAN be great for people. Socially, people have always made games.

Besides, who knows? Maybe we will end up with real life Heroes, if people get inspired enough? =]

Fun Run with my little Energy Blaster.

Between the Burn from Sister Flame and some knockback to keep him from attacking back, the evil brother was taken out easily.

Let's hope Fudor get's his own series, the world would be a darker place without regular doses of Disco Troll...

I really wish I knew what struck me to take the Trolls and put a humorous spin on them. Sister Flame gets credit for the "Disco" part, but there was just something about the Trolls that said to me "There has got to be other Troll flavors". Obviously, my co-worker must have had the same thought when he designed the Trolls of Great Britain.

Perhaps it is time for me to make my own arc... where the heroes must break up the War of the Pompadour between the Disco Trolls and the Flashback Trolls Of The 80s.

Nah. Even Sister Flame says that doesn't sound like a lot of fun. Still, we can't help ourselves at times and we feel the need to talk like Disco Trolls. Sister Flame is getting pretty well versed in terms from the 70s.

Pity my wife.

My newest Burnt Matchstick character, a level 8 (at the time) Dom.

Also, nominated the arc in my player choice awards (see sig - one day left to nominate, voting starts soon)

I just like to thank Bubbawheat for the picture and the nomination. Not only did I appreacite it, it gave me a hilarious Sister Flame story... or at least I thought it was.

Wyll: Hey, Sister Flame. You have another picture in your thread on the CoH foums. A "Bubbawheat" also left comments on your mission and you got nominated for the Mission Architect Player Awards of 2009

SF: Awards? What's that?

Wyll: People vote from a short list of missions in different categories about which player made stories they like best. Kind of like the Oscars.

SF: Really?! Do you a statue or a trophy?

Wyll: Uh... no. The winner in each category gets influence.

SF: *disappointed* But no trophy?

Wyll: Nope.

SF: What does second get?

Wyll: Nothing.

SF: Really? Cuz even second and third place people in contests get little prizes... and trophies sometimes.

Wyll: There are no trophies.

SF: Oh... how come it isn't like soccer where everyone gets a medal? You know I like medals.

Wyll: It's a fan run contest. There are no trophies or medals. Just influence and pride to be won.

SF: But you said it was like the Oscars and people who win Oscars get trophies.

Wyll: Well, you don't get a trophy for winning this contest.

SF: Then its not like the Oscars.

Wyll: Okay, technically, you are right.

This conversation went on for another five minutes where my choice of words were called into question several times. You know, for only being eight, she feels like she has the concept of a rules lawyer down to a science.

I'm just surprised she isn't a min-maxer with her toons.

Peace!

Linus: You've heard of the fury of a woman scorned, haven't you?

Charlie Brown: Yeah, I guess I have.

Linus: Well, that's nothing compared to the fury of a woman who has been cheated out of trick-or-treats.

It would seem that trophies should be added to the list.

"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"

"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."

I think the part I like the best about that story is that I'm referred to as 'A "Bubbawheat"'.
