Screenshot in the char creation screen?

I know Print Screen works to take screenshots in game, but how do I take one in the character creation screen? Sometimes I just make costumes and would like to capture a shot without having to log all the way in.

Can CoH do it or do I need to use FRAPS or a 3rd party ap?

I don't think you can do it within CoH. I usually just hit print screen, then paste it into MS Paint (being about the most sophisticated photo editor I have.)

If you are not in the game 'world', where the game engine is rendering the 3d objects, hitting print screen will copy the image of whatever is on your screen to your computer's clipboard. All you need to do is alt-tab out, bring up MS Paint, MS Photo Editor, or any other such image editor, and paste the image in.

This works with not only the costume creation screen, but also the enhancement management screen or even character selection.

Yeah, Print Screen will capture whatever's onscreen at the moment. As you can see in my sig, I used it quite a lot to get shots of all my characters. I also use it when at the tailor, if I'm trying to decide between different outfits and want to compare them side-by-side after I've slept on it.

I have an issue, where I hit prt+scrn and paste the clipboard image into Photoshop, or Paint (have tried both), and the image shows up completely black.

How is this fixed?

If anyone is using Vista, you should have a program called Snip It, which allows you to drag a box over what you see on your screen and save and name the file.

there's another thread wandering about that covers this in great detail.

my problem is that the snipping tool is not "oooo pretty!" friendly (stop what i'm doing open the thing oops image i wanted is gone.)

LJ since you seem to know whats goin on could you write a tut for taking screens in win7/vista for the rest of us? Or anyone who knows how to make the printscreen button work as it did in XP.

thanks much.

Windows 7 also has the Snipping Tool. What I did was pin it to the task bar and when I'm in the character select screen (or costume screen), hit the Windows key and then click the Snipping Tool. Frame around your character and save it.

The down side is, like the_fox_Rox said, catching an action shot out of the powers screen is more a question of luck than skill since sometimes the Tool works right away and sometimes it takes its sweet time.

Necropost resurrects the thread from the dead!

Anyway... Vista (and apparently Win7) have utterly broken screen capture buttons. Either you get a black screen or a screen shot for several minutes prior to when you hit the Print Screen button. (Which is so weird I don't even know why that happens.)

So I do use Snipping Tool for the tailor and character creation screens. There's a slight delay between clicking on the tool and when it freezes the action so you can drag the rectangle around, so you have to develop the knack of anticipating an action when you click on the tool. A little practice results in getting your desired pic 90% of the time. Since in the Powers part of character creation the animation cycles endlessly, you can just wait for it to come around again.

So here are the steps I use to get screenshots in the Character Creator / Tailor window (this sounds complicated, but it really only takes a couple seconds once you do it a couple times):

1. Press Window button (between Ctrl and Alt) to open Start Menu
2. Find Snipping Tool, use it once to pin it to the Start Menu
3. Start CoH, design character
4. Re-color powers
5. Choose animation
6. Press the Window button to open the Start menu
7. Watch animation carefully for the "tell" right before the pose you want - about a second
8. Click Snipping Tool - this will freeze the on-screen action
9. Drag box around the character
10. Save As to a folder of your choice

PITA? Sure. But soon you'll be taking shots like these:

**Wanders into thread, takes off artistic-type-person hat and puts on custom computer builder hat**

Don't know about the other thread that covered this because I mostly only come to the art section
but how about a solution that is not a pain in the backside, doesn't require timing gymnastics,
does everything you guys are wanting without having to alt+tab out of the game,
works with all forms of windows and is completely free?

Gadwin Printscreen is free (non pro version which is all you need), newb friendly, can be set to grab screen caps of anything
on the screen including the mouse pointer, works in the CC, does NOT require any other imaging or photo app,
will do all the converting for you and dump jpeg's into whatever folder you tell it too.

It can also turn your screencaps into .gif .tif .bmp or .png formats and can auto resize your images for you.
Want to capture only part of the screen? It does that too, just set a trigger key (I use Alt+Prinscreen)
and a box appears on your cursor stretch it to cover what you want to be in the pic and hit enter.
There's more but you can play with the settings on your own. Enjoy!

P.S. For those of you who get a black screen when you screen cap... most of the time it's a driver issue and updating
to the latest drivers for your video card here for ATI users or here for Nvidia users will usually solve this issue.
Finally, if you recently switched from a Nvidia card to an ATI card (or vice versa) you should run a good driver
cleaning utility to remove the old stuff first before you put the new stuff in to avoid any issues. Cheers,

Hmmm, I been meaning to ask you about that program as it's not been working for me... Been getting the black rectangle Was thinking it may have to do with the dual monitor set up but I guess maybe I should check me drivers??

Ah well, something I'll worry about some other time

You mean Gadwin is not working for you? Or all ingame screenshots give you a black screen?
They worked fine when I tried them on your box here (that is how I put that shot in your folder describing the trigger key).
Hmmm well I know you have all the latest drivers and patches/updates already so it's not that.
PM me and I'll look into it for ya man.

I got round the costume creator issue by downloading FRAPS and setting up its screenshot function.

<shrug>

Works for me.

Fraps is another good choice.
It doesn't have most of the options in it that Gadwin does and the free version has limits and watermarks the video (not sure about the screenshots). It only has options to add a FramesPerSec overlay and to capture every 10 seconds but it does support all the common formats including Targa which Gadwin does not (fraps does not support .tif or .gif though if I remember correctly). Full version of Fraps is $37 and updates after that I believe are free.

The above said if you want to capture video (and don't care for the vid capture functions baked in to Coh) then there are few options better than Fraps.

Both have free versions so I'd say try em and see which you prefer.

However, the point of this thread is that if you're using Vista or Win 7, then Prt Scr doesn't work on the character creation screen.

On XP it works fine, just not on Vista or later.

Actually...print screen works just fine on my Vista Home box, as well as alt-printscreen, which grabs only the window you are in and not the whole desktop...I had no idea it was broken for others o.O For the few times I needed something more complicated, the GShot gadget works rather well too

Works absolutely fine in vista.

That's not the only reason Vista sucks. **looks at huge list of beta test notes and bugs never fixed**
As a system builder I just skipped it and told all my clients to stay with XP until 7 came out... I only ever put it on my test box while participating in Microsoft's beta program but none of my mission critical machines ever got "vista-fied".
To be fair it did get somewhat better after Service Pack 1 came out but not nearly enough and now with Win7 out there is no reason to choose it at all.
/end rant.

That's actually a very, very false statement. Sure, Vista sucks, but not for that reason. Vista is not the "same program". Its UI system differs by several magnitudes than that of XP, and it also brings new functionality and usability features to the operating system.

As for taking screenshots from the character selection screen and whatnot, just follow these steps if you're using Vista/7:

1. Set up the scene you wish to take screenshot of.
2. Press the Windows key on your keyboard.
3. Open any application. Anything would do. But open something light with a small window. Command Prompt, a simple Explorer Window, or a Notepad window would be good examples.
4. With the newly opened Window on top, make sure CoH is taking your screen's background. Position it to that it's not blocking the focus of your scene.
5. With the newly opened window on top, press Print Screen on your keyboard.
6. Open Paint.
7. Press Ctrl + V.
8. Crop out the opened window on top, and you should be left with the background, which just happens to be what you were taking screenshot of.
9. Profit!
