Screenshot in the char creation screen?
That's actually a very, very false statement. Sure, Vista sucks, but not for that reason. Vista is not the "same program". Its UI system differs by several magnitudes than that of XP, and it also brings new functionality and usability features to the operating system. As for taking screenshots from the character selection screen and whatnot, just follow these steps if you're using Vista/7: 1. Set up the scene you wish to take screenshot of. 2. Press the Windows key on your keyboard. 3. Open any application. Anything would do. But open something light with a small window. Command Prompt, a simple Explorer Window, or a Notepad window would be good examples. 4. With the newly opened Window on top, make sure CoH is taking your screen's background. Position it to that it's not blocking the focus of your scene. 5. With the newly opened window on top, press Print Screen on your keyboard. 6. Open Paint. 7. Press Ctrl + V. 8. Crop out the opened window on top, and you should be left with the background, which just happens to be what you were taking screenshot of. 9. Profit! |
That said there are so many variables that could account for something like that... you could just as easily (and I have) see two XP machines fail/succeed at the same task.
The take away here, which I think we can all agree upon for our own reasons, is that Vista stinks on ice.
P.S. That is not something I would want to do every time (and it isn't very quick capture friendly) Bright Shadow but it is certainly a very clever workaround and I for one always appreciate knowing multiple ways of making a computer do what you want it to do.
That might explain things Sapphic, I run in windowed mode as well, maybe its just fullscreen it doesn't like with the Print Screen button....
Can't say for certain but I think Ironik is talking about how some who have Vista have problems with caps and others do not... not comparing XP to Vista but comparing something that fails on one Vista machine to that same thing working on another Vista machine (correct me if I'm misunderstanding you though Ironik).

Vista has spooky behavior in that you can install the exact same version on identical machines and it will behave differently on each. I've seen this happen on my parents' laptops: same model, same Vista, different results.
My screen cap actually worked as expected (and as it did for XP) after applying SP1. Then it inexplicably reverted to taking screenshots of two minutes prior. As I mentioned earlier, that's such a weird glitch I don't even know why it happens. Even though Vista apparently stores on-screen information for the past few minutes, why on Earth would it reference it when you hit Print Screen? That's just weird.

Sometimes when closing the game down i get this "flash" of what i was doing anywhere from two minutes ago to up to 15 minutes ago. Usually, it's me having just loaded a new zone in the flash (exiting a mission door or popping in and out of oro) it's all very strange. I really can't understand why win7 and vista behave this way. I would expect that the print screen "program" would just take the next screen in the video buffer and save it, why it censors or modifies any information is a mind boggling. I posted a request for help thread about this in the help forum. hopefully that'll net a nice result.
Roxy On DA...Finally!
The reason Windows Vista and 7 behave like this is because of something called Desktop Composition. It is a feature that gives the Windows UI a lot of power and new functionality. Sadly, however, it is not very friendly with some UI-related applications that were originally designed for older versions of Windows that did not use the new Aero Desktop Composition.
I don't know the exact details, but I do know it has to do with the way windows handles transparent pixels on the Windows UI. Apparently (again, this is just off the top of my head after fiddling with Windows UI for a program I was working on) the standards for handling transparent pixels in Windows XP are different than those in Windows 7 and Vista. If the XP standards are used to draw and use transparent pixels, or "hidden pixels", Windows 7 and Vista draw them as simply black pixels.
The reason CoH acts like this with Desktop Composition may or may not be related to this transparent pixel issue. There can be many explanations. The flash could also be related to this, as CoH probably makes a request to flush the screen pixels and paint over them.
Ok! The dead had its fun, hope the question was answered. Burying this thread back with the rest of its dead thready friends!
mmm...
i wonder if it's anything to do with the fact i play in window and not fullscreen.
