Comic Book Creator Contest

I am on vacation and wasn't able to upload my comic so I put it on a USB drive so I could do it on the road. Apparently I am stupid, the program needs to take the pictures from your computer each time it loads, so I am screwed. I get back the day after the contest ends. Lot's of people are having problems though, maybe we can get an extension?

Just to clarify (so I'm not TOTALLY missing something), the instructions in the contest specify that you can email your pdf or jpg entry in OOOOOOOOR post it on the hypercomic site.

Correct?

If so, just wanted to point this out since some people seem to be having trouble with this.

Many, MANY people (myself included) have had no luck with the PDF option. It isn't even offered on my trial version ("whited out" on the program, went to the progam company's forums page and found numerous posts reflecting the same problem). I have deleted and reloaded all options of the program numerous times (to include Ghostwriter) still only way I can publish is via Hypercomics upload.

As for JPEG...I guess you could screenshot it, edit it then compile all the pages into one...not sure of quality on that and positive the effort for it would be tedious. But still an option I guess.

Anyone else have any ideas on this issue?

Yeah, I think you have to buy it to unlock the PDF functionality or something (which really steams me because why did they include it?) Oh well. I ended up publishing on the website. . .

I went the screenshot/crop/save route. I DO find it mind-boggling that they want *one* JPEG for the comic book... don't they mean one for each page? I CAN put them all together, but that'd be a) a largish file and b) a pain to read.

Hrm. Come to think of it... I own a full version of Adobe Acrobat. I use it mostly for conversion from MS Office, but maybe I can find a way to assemble the JPEGs into a PDF file outside of CBC. Photoshop's 'Print to File', maybe?

Posted

Full version of Adobe? Oh yeah I believe you should be able to...but I thought they wanted it in jpg format then? I have Adobe Photoshop (which rocks) ...maybe you can get a free trial and try that route?

I've PM'ed Lighthouse. Hopefully he can clear things up for us.

I received a reply from Lighthouse:

You can publish to Hypercomics and send us the URL also. All 3 methods (jpg, pdf or link to Hypercomics) are valid entries.

[/ QUOTE ]

In my own message, I'd mentioned that the trial version of CBC was restricted to publishing to Hypercomics, and asked about the possibility of taking screencaps of CBC pages and turning those to JPEGs (and PDFs). I'd also asked whether we had to submit *one* PDF, or could submit one per page.

Since he didn't say any of the above methods weren't allowed, I'm guessing they're all categorically allowed as fitting within the 'JPEG, PDF or Hypercomics' format requirements.

** (excluding the State of Rhode Island,

I find that to be the most ironic 'exclusion' of all.

[/ QUOTE ]

I just stumbled across an article which may shed some light on this exclusion.

[ QUOTE ]
In the United States, every state establishes their own set of rules for contests. Most states have the same basic rules, so most national contests are valid. Rhode Island is unique because the state law actually requires the company to file a legal statement before it can run a contest in that state. The statute, Section 11-50-1 of Rhode Island General Laws, reads:

"Any person, firm, or corporation proposing to engage in any game, contest, or other promotion or advertising scheme or plan in which a retail establishment offers the opportunity to receive gifts, prizes, or gratuities, as determined by chance, in order to promote its retail business, where the total announced value of the prizes offered to the general public is in excess of five hundred dollars ($500), must file a statement with the secretary of state."

The statute then details exactly what information must be included in the filed statement. In addition, the law requires the company pay a $150 filing fee. If a company runs a contest in Rhode Island, and fails to file a statement correctly, the company is actually guilty of a criminal misdemeanor!

For companies that want to run national contests, the filing fee alone means it's not really worthwhile to run the contest in Rhode Island, which has a fairly small population. When you add to that the hassle of researching Rhode Island law in order to file the statement correctly, very few national companies are going to bother. The term "retail establishment" is fairly vague, so it's not really clear if the law would apply to a non-retail Web site. It probably does, however, and for most sites, it's not worth the time to try to contact the state of Rhode Island secretary of state to find out.

[/ QUOTE ]

So if you live in Rhode Island, you should consider writing to your representative and asking them to ease the legal restrictions on contests a little bit.

OK I stopped worrying about winning, I am seeing some great stuff on Hypercomics--far better than my entry. But I had fun putting this together and my SG had a blast reading it. Here is my entry for gee whiz...

I had fun reading it, too.

I'm still tweaking my entry - I'd overlooked some CBC options when I'd put together my first draft.

Seeing what other people do with the program always helps.

Yeah, worrying about winning will just give you gray hair . My brother took the lead in making our entry, but it was a team effort and quite fun. Now my wife is working on one .

Oh, here's our entry: Royal Robbery

I liked it! Very funny, and some lovely action shots (such as the skull shooting out).

I've already plugged mine, but hopefully this is the finished version.

Baba Kanoosh: The shots of the ceiling in the hospital cracked me up! I'm still chuckling over that.

Sciuridae: I got a friend up in Maine who writes horror stories. He's going to love your entry. Wicked humor.

If you have the full paid version, there is an option to turn each page into a JPG file... however, I have the Marvel version of the software and even that says it needs the PDF capability (which won't even install right (even with downloading and activating the newest version of the Marvel CBC software).

Guess I will have to do each page manually as a screenie, JPG it and THEN see if I can get those uploaded to the HyperComics site.

Tried that... it said that it was in the wrong format (the site says you have to to upload it as a JPG, TGA or GIF). Maybe it just doesn't like Firefox

Publishing to Hypercomics mangled a lot of the text in my entry, so I had to hunt around for ways to fix that...

It turns out that when you edit your entry, there's an option to upload individual JPEGs for each page. They need to be in an exact 8.5 x 11 ratio to work correctly with the page-turning feature.

I ended up taking screenshots of Comic Book Creator, and then using Photoshop to create JPEGs for the mangled pages. Maybe that'll work for you.

I SAW IT. One of the best covers I have seen so far. Just seemed to be a nice balance and unique. The storyline...The pink dress was too much. What a hoot. This thread is getting fun, need more entries folks don't be shy.

That was wonderful!

So many things to like... the humour, the costumes, the 'back in Police Woman 22'...

Great job!

Beautiful art style.

I do wonder how many elephants died to provide raw material for a six-foot ivory figurine, though...
