Comic Book Creator Contest
Well, here's my submission (thought I wasn't going to make it last night since it kept failing to publish). Thanks to my supergroup, The Liberty League, and my enemies, The League of Evil, for their contributions!
The Liberty League vs. The League of Evil
I did up this one barely in time.

Well, I finally got my entry up on Hypercomics; it wasn't accepting entries from my Vista box for some reason, and for some other, equally baffling reason, my laptop was not cooperating with my wifi setup at home. I did make the submission deadline via email, though. Anyway, if you're interested, you can find it here.
Oh, and check out the Liberty League's Comic. It's hysterical, and I'm not just saying that because I'm in the SG. Honest.

Now, more than ever, Paragon City needs heroes. Do your part to save it.
Wellp, here's my submission. Hope i did everything properly. I was kind of rushed to finish near the end. Not quite sure i understand the comment Farmer Frost left for me .
Well, i hope you all like it more than he did.

I commented/rated yours, D. I think he got stuck on the same part I did, as mentioned in the comment. No biggie though, as it's still pretty nice. Good job, and good luck!
Thank you for the comment and rating. I honsetly wasn't sure if he was offended or thought it was just a really stupid name.
Not a Hero is very well put together, by the way... as are alot of the entries i've seen, now that i've browsed a bit. Wish mine was as up-to-snuff as some of the ones i've seen but i suppose it's my fault for putting off the contest for so long. I had a much grander idea in my head as may have been indicated by contrasting the narration and photography of the beginning pages with the ones closer to the end. Not all that much unlike some of the other authors have said, i was extremely psyched for the first week or so and rather quickly lost interest until the due date rolled around. To me, the first few pages are much better quality than the last.
Anyway, oh well i guess. C'est la vie.
Thanks again,
_D

You know? I never came by here and posted my entry. Since I have time, I will give a touch of background...
I have been taking screenies since I heard about the contest (Snap, Snap, Snap). But being the guy that puts off things that do not actually make money (yeah I'm poor, big whoop, wanna fight about it?) I did not actually start slapping my book together until about 11 p.m. the night before the contest ended. I wrapped up at about 6 a.m., and had it posted to the hypercomics website as fine as you please. What I submitted is the end result of 7 hours of loving labor. Not too shabby considering that if I had taken the time to actually bring these bad boys into photoshop first, the end result would have been pretty much indistinguishable from a printed work. In fact, the story I had originally intended unraveled after I laid out my first panel. So much for planning. I operate better on the fly anyway, and I laid the story out panel by panel, inventing it as I went along. my issue: "Violet Spider" is available for your viewing pleasure here:
VIOLET SPIDER .
Enjoy, and the best of luck to all who entered. lots of nicely laid out stories involved, and plenty of eye candy for all. Makes me cry a little bit inside (and not because James Doohan's ashes were launched out of my neigborhood this last weekend. R.I.P. "Scotty". You are keeping gods engines running now.)
MY FAREWELL GIFT
It is never truly gone, as long as there is someone left to remember.
I was offended. I wasn't going to bring it up. I posted my critique in the appropriate area, but since you're talking about me in the third person in this open, friendly forum -- I'll go right ahead.
I was very offended.
AIDS MAN?
You called your villain, AIDS MAN?
[censored], DUDE?
Get a clue. Millions are dying from this terrible disease and your "hero" is stupid enough (or heartless enough) to taunt your villain by calling him "AIDS MAN"?
There's nothing heroic or educated about that. It's simple ignorance. I don't fault you. I'm sure you probably don't know friends who are sick, or had relatives who have died -- I'm sure you live in a cozy, green bubble where "AIDS MAN" comes off as a suitable insult, likely HILARIOUS!
But it's not funny - it's lazy. As the other commentor mentioned on your comic you could have gone in any number of creative routes. You chose the cheapest laugh, and it stinks like such.
So there. Yeah, I guess I was a little offended.
And honestly, I suggest you drop this topic, and slink back into your little corner of "New Yersey".
...
well i guess i have been known to be pretty cold.
I don't really know how to respond... I mean i'm sorry you're offended but you don't need to degrade me and insult me like that... I was just trying to get this thing done and i was at a lack of time and vocabulary. I didn't mean to offend anyone... I worked hard on this and actually thought i might have a chance... but i suppose it's utter crap now.
Sorry...
_D
P.S. Your comic was pretty good by the way. I like the conversation he has with Chalmers... good work i guess...

Not that I'm trying to drag this out further, but I originally took your comment (it's 2007, not 1982) to mean something more along the lines of "Aids is soooo old. Why not Ebola Man or SARS Man, or Hemmoraging Fish Virus Man?, etc".
I guess now that you mention it, it can very well be taken offensively. Sorry for not realizing it as such. I personally took it as him merely having writers block and not having any idea what kind of 'nickname' his villain should have... similar to Spidey's many quippy monnikers.
Sorry!

Allowing for the fact that a big enough stage and the right amount of wit can make some pretty devastatingly morbid [censored] completely hilarious, it is a little hard for me to believe that you were so out of touch with polite society that "AIDS Man" seemed like a good idea. However, if I were to guage your sin, I'd simply say that it was in failing at funny (in my opinion) and leave it at that. One moment of stupid insensitivity does not a jackass make.
Just so you know, I'm not on the "not funny" bandwagon because I'm oh so PC (I'm not) or because I've know a few people who have passed after developing AIDs (I have)...I say it because your hero simply used it in a name calling context that lacked any semblence of eloquence or wit and it made your hero look like an jerk. If you had pulled off an AIDs joke in the context of showing another character's small-mindedness, you would have still offended someone but you probably would have had a few defenders.
Frost, I sincerely hope that you've never found the funny in a black pit of despair or laughed at Howard Stern or tried to lighten an otherwise dark moment with a bit of risky comedy. We simply don't have the right to fence off our personal areas of mistery shared by millions and declare them off limits to others. All we can really do is not laugh when it falls flat.

I was listening to the Hollywood Babble-On show that Lighthouse and Kevin Donovan were on last week, and they mentioned that the office was whittling down entries round robin style with judging comments, or something to that effect. Does that mean we'll be able to read the comments on our entries after the winners are announced?
After seeing all the great comic submissions I doubt mine will win but I'd be more than happy if I get a few chuckles with it. I tried to upload it on the hypercomics site but had troubles with it(I submitted a pdf) so I just stuck it on photobucket instead.

Okay, THAT comic is now my favourite. Definitely gets MY vote for funniest, best action, best story, etc. ad naus.
Great job, Howdy!
It's official (as official as my declarations get, which is NOT AT ALL). We have a new leader.
Liberty Comics "The Stuff of Dreams" is funny, plenty of action, the screenshots rock, the dialogue fits (overblown where it's supposed to be, natural and flowing when the action winds down) and best of all in my opinion... it breathes LIFE into the non-superheroic citizens of Paragon City.
The antics of villains and heroes shouldn't happen in a vacuum; if there's no innocents to protect, no bureaucrats to rail at, no normals to make the heroes more awesome and the villains more terrifying, the great struggle between good and evil loses any meaning and becomes little more than a high stakes version of pro-wrestling. And suddenly, here comes the Stuff of Dreams as a reminder, without being preachy or melodramatic, to tap heroes on the shoulder and say "Hey. This is why you're battling evil."
I bow down, Sparky. If this entry doesn't win I will stop playing City of Heroes for 10 minutes, at least.

Gotta agree. Does everything my and my brother's entry does, only better. Even has a Gloom shot. Really ought to win something, even if only an honorable mention of some kind.

Since I haven't read them all, I can't really declare it the best but it's pretty damn good. I just wish it were possible to make a better kid character in the game...kids usually end up looking like overly-muscular midgets in CoH. I probably would have given then smooth tights and gone for pajamas or something.
I can say it is entries like that they cause my hope to waiver because even if my comic were one of the better ones (I'm not saying that it is), there will probably be lots of good ones that don't have the few text box glitches that I didn't have time to fix and if all other things are equal (if that's the case...not saying that they are), I think the people who managed clean copies should get something for that extra effort.
Good job in any case. Thanks for relieving me of the burden of a prize package.
EDIT: But I'd still like some feedback over at Hypercomics, people! Please, start reading!

Heh.... Thanks for posting. I dig the comic, and practically forgot about hypercomics lately. I've really enjoyed a lot of the comics I've found on there relating to this contest, but I have to say that I'm at least a little bit less interested due to the fact that my freebie trial has now gone kaput. Makes me hope I win just so I can get a free copy of the software instead of waiting for the next paycheck.
Now if we could only get a hint from the devs/rednames/judges as to who's won (or about to win)...
Call me a crazy American, but I guess all these reality game shows have me expecting some sort of 'Final Round' where the field has been narrowed to 8 or something, and they're paraded around for a bit until the true winner(s) are finally revealed on the season finale.
Been away from this thread for a while...I am seriously thinking I should have put a 10000% more effort into my entry after seeing some of these great submissions. It was all fun none the less. _SPARKY_ took the lead I think...at least from what I have seen on this thread. Who knows what entries are out there we didn't see. Will be a riot to see the winners and I agree, a preview to the finals would be good fun as well.

Contest begins March 27, 2007 at 2:00pm (CDT) and ends at 11:59pm (CDT) on April 27, 2007. Entries will not be accepted after this deadline. Winners will be announced no later than Wednesday, May 25.

Wednesday is only a few days away. Of course, Wednesday will be the 23rd, not the 25th. The 25th will be Friday. But then, they didn't say what year. The next time May 25th will be a Wednesday is in the year 2011. Gee, I hope we don't have to wait that long to find out who won!

Hate to say it, though, but didn't he miss the submission deadline by four hours?

I'm pretty sure he sent it in on time. I think the time stamp is set to a different time zone on the Hyper Comics site. Boy, I hope so!
Thanks for all the comments, I'll be sure to let him know! Incidentally, if you happen to bump into Johnny Rapid on the Virtue Server ... he NEVER breaks character. It's pretty fun to watch.
