Whenever I quit the game the last image on screen "freezes", and I hear an error beep in the background.

[/ QUOTE ]
A BEEP?? Through the speakers or coming directly from your PC?

[/ QUOTE ]

Oh - you know, Vista's shiny new "error dialog" noise. Red herring I'm afraid

I am having the same cursor alignment problem you did. From the character selection I can not select the enter paragon city button. I am using a laptop with vista x32, NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS with driver version 7.15.10.9746. I have not been able to find a newer driver and I have tried turning off the sidebar. Still have the cursor down and to the right of where it is registering. Anyone else have any ideas?

Hello all.

My parents purchased a Vista PC yesterday, and it's been running fine, save for CoH.
The game starts up and runs (albeit with a very high gamma setting) perfectly normal until I get in-game. All the textures are black, excluding the characters and the far-off buildings, which remain their normal colors.

Specs:

Windows Vista Home Basic
Intel Celeron D 3.33 GHz
1.5 GB RAM
ATi Radeon Xpress 1100 (Integrated suckage, but it's all we can afford at the moment.)

Any help would be appreciated.

Running Vista and updated to the new Nvidia Driver, 158.18, for my GeForce 8800 GTX. CoH launches by changing the display to 8-bit color and saying my card does not support some DirectX items "You card or driver doesn't support GL_EXT_compiled_vertex_array", etc. Then it tells me to switch to 32-bit color and finally that my card is not supported. I tried going back to an earlier working driver but that did not fix the problem.

Suggestions?

You might have set some options in the nvidia control panel that are not compatible with the game. Also I wanted to ask how did you install your drivers. Sometimes they dont install right when you use the nvidia installer. That is why you should use the update a driver wizard in the device manager.

This is going to be hard. Make sure you have all the latest drivers from ATI and start the game in safe mode from the updater. If that works, raise settings from there.

This is pretty good general advice for most graphic problems in CoX.

OK! I figured out how to fix the cursor alignment problem on a laptop running Vista 32 with a NVidia GeForce Go 7900. In the compatability tab I checked "Disable desktop composition" So far I haven't seen any problems arise from this.

Thank you. Updating the drivers to the latest ones fixed the problem. The game runs a lot smoother now, as well.

I managed to fix this problem by downloading the latest desktop ati drivers (7.4) from the ati site for vista. I then ran the mobility modder program at driverheaven.net and now my texture and gamma issues have been fixed.

I thought I would post this here, so other people who are experiencing the same or similar problems may try this out.

Good catch Ling Do! (Wish it wasn't 19 pages into the topic.)

I still have the exact same problems as when Vista launched:

Every time I open a window that has a 2d image, say, the info screen on a character, the contact list, the ID screen, etc., it either shows a black box, or (and this is what happens most of the time) it locks up the whole PC.

Running ATI X800XT PE with Catalyst 7.4. Running in Compatibility mode does nothing.

But are you really?

If, when you run the game, you are asked for the admin password, then you have to do a bit more to get any of that compatibility working. Right click on the shortcut, go to the compatibility tab, and click "show setttings for all users" at the bottom. Enter your admin password. NOW check the boxes you want to use and OK your way out.

(Apologies if you've already done this and told me so.)

Let's hear it. Spew your hatred towards this once $500+ video card like you do to so many onboard chipsets not even close in performance to this card, once the flagship of the company.

By the way, I have XP on another drive and it runs flawlessly when booted into XP.

What, *twitch* isn't enough?

Heck, how 'bout the $8000 Tandy 286 from the wayback machine? Now, THAT's a flagship... that's now about equivalent to floor lint in current value.

LOL!!! Good one, Hewey. You win an Internets!

And yes, I have not found ANY cheap, on-board PC video chipsets worthy of true, real-time 3D performance in Co*... EVER. So the twitching continues there, too, till Players who are stuck with them and complain about their video slide-shows... wake up, bypass them and get real video-cards for good.

Well, I'm lost. I had an X800 XT before this new computer and it worked great. Couldn't do top of the line graphics but it could do pretty well.

If it isn't working under Vista, I would have to guess it's some sort of driver problem. Sheeesh, it's May, they are still having driver problems??

Shego: Yeah, I thought ya might like that...

No response? I'm disappointed. I figured I would get some reason for the twitch.

Yes, I tried going under 'all users' which I had not tried before, and I thank Zloth for mentioning it. No use. Crashed the instant I opened an info window. I've reformatted once since February's launch date of Vista as well to no avail.

There has been 4 Catalyst driver releases since Vista's launch and this is the only game that has problems. I suppose it's all to do with OpenGL.

I can usually run it fine if I don't open the windows with a 2d picture.

Well you've got me stumped, JayboH. Do you have any other video cards around that can play CoH even a little bit? Just enough to get in and open a 2D window to see if it crashes?

Posted

Yes, I haven't tried that yet. I have a 9700 Pro in my wife's machine. I'll give it a whirl at some point. Since today is Sunday, I think I will just boot into XP and get some salvage.

BTW, I do plan on doing a massive rebuild next tax return.

Current build:
Athlon 64 3400+ (2.2 Ghz)
1 gig Corsair XMS DDR with 2,2,2,5 settings
Vista Home Premium (bootable into XP Pro)
150 gig WD Raptor 10000 RPM HD
74 gig WD Raptor 10000 RPM HD
250 gig WD SATA 7200 RPM HD
500 watt PS
ATI X800XT PE vid card with Cat 7.4
Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music

I will probably end up going completely the other way next year and grabbing Intel and Nvidia goods. By then DDR3 should be widely available and DirectX 10 will be perfected a bit more.

I'm having the mouse pointer problem, but when i right click the coh update and hit properties, there is no target or shortcut tab. what do i do?

Edit: now all of the sudden when i try to connect to a server, it says i have the wrong version and i need to verify files, and when i do, nothing changes. it says cant verify checksum. Darn vista messin up all my games.

The 'wrong version' client message has nothing to do with you running Vista.
