Updated Compilation of Vista Issues/Fixes
can you tell me y vista keeps kickin me of the game and telling me the game is not responding?????
Can someone help with this situation, i have vista system and after about 5 to 10 mins of playing it kicks me of saying that the game is not responding. can someone help????
Malcolm - If your primary accounts have admin rights then you've already installed the drivers as an admin. You might try setting the game to run without compatability instead unless this hasn't worked for you in the past. Also check out BillZBubba's(?) Ati settings guide in his sig, I think he's posted in this thread so it shouldn't be to hard to find his guide. That might be able to help you as well.
gunness - If you could please post the DxDiag and Hijack This info, both are found in the sticky "Before you post." That would help greatly in identifying you're problem.
Btw guys I figured out my problem with the sound lag, it might help anyone else experiencing the same problem. Under the options for Graphics and Audio set your sound to "Compatibility" and 3D Sound off. I only get a slight amount of lag due to sound now and that's in the CH when everyones got their powers still going.

OMG!!!
Rennfield, you need to tell them make it in another thread! This one isn't the place for those things... Cannot stress that enough. Please don't post those logs here, start a new thread. We can concentrate on you better that way. Thank you all so much!

Where would he post it if not here. He did say that he is running a Vista system. And it's Vista telling him the program stopped responding. Where else then?

I don't really know what a Dxdiag and a hijack is what is that and will help with the problem i am having????
i just need to know what to do about the system kicking me of constantly
Gunness -
Read through ::Before You Post - Common Solutions Inside:: for instructions on getting dxdiag and hijackthis logs. Once you have them, post them in a new thread.

Vista, XP or whatever, Rennfield, it is still best to post the logs in a different thread. So a new thread is where.
So we don't clutter this one up with attempts to solve the issue.
Like we have with replies.
And Gunness, we'll get ya fixed. Over there ->>> <Pointing to new thread you start.>

Honestly, though, I wonder if it's about time for this thread to be done. I mean, who's going to run through 24 pages of posts to try and find a solution? Also, Vista is getting common enough now that it isn't really practical to shunt everyone using it over to just one thread.

Here is a link to Vista Hotfixes that are not publicly available to all people via windows update. There are quite a few hot fixes that are specifically for home premium or ultimate vista systems so you guys may want to check these out. A couple of these fixes are driver related. What I would do is go to microsofts support site and type in the kb number of the file and search for that. Like for instance vista has issues with copying files over the network and kb931770 fixes this issue.

What are these fixes and what do they do?
Do I have to download and run all of them, if not how do I tell which ones are necessary?

That is the hard part. NO, you should not download and install all of them. Some of these are only for people having a specific issue. the hard part is figuring out which ones you need. The site is geared more towards advanced users. Basically, all of the files there are based on the Microsoft Knowledgebase articles related to a problem. In order to know what to download, you first have to find out on the Microsoft site what the knowledgebase article is for whatever problem you have. Once you find that, and see that it says to Contact Microsoft for the Hotfix, you can write down the KB article number, and go to the earlier site and find the file associated with that KB article.

I have vista and I am not experiencing any of these problems others are. I know I downloaded the game from the website instead of my old disc. Maybe that has something to do with it but I dont know. My pointer is there and when it does disappear I right click and it is back. btw I have a new computer with a butt load of memory which helps I guess
I made a topic about cov running badly I fixed some of the problem but one still remains. The problem was the video card something was wrong with it I'm working on getting an RMA on it but anyways. When running cov the game will use more and more ram it won't stop. More so in grandville then anywhere else. The game will become unplayable after it uses about 1.3gb of ram. After that I have to quit the game and restart it and the game will go back to using about 600 to 800 mb of ram. An ideas would be great thanks Danny

The disappearing cursor that you are describing is different from the one that needs the -compatiblecursors entry. I have the same thing that you describe. it is annoying, especially during combat, but it comes back if you just move your mouse around quickly, or right-click. Actually, even just clicking normally will make it come back usually.
If I remember right though, the disappearing cursors issue that needs the switch, is related to video drivers, not the OS itself.

I know you heard this before but I have no idea what to do:
I just upgraded my dell E510 to Vista. (COH worked great on XP). Had the mouse issue and used the fix. however the game is very laggy and rubberbands. I have 1 GB of ram and my graphics card is a Nvidia 7300 LE. Here are what I think my options are and please tell me what you think?:
1. buy a new good graphics card (I don't want to do this if Vista is still going to cause problems)
2. Upgrade memory (I don't really run any heavy applications on my comp aside from COH)
3. reinstall XP (I like the vista interface)
Please help me choose the best solution and if buying a new card is the solution please tell me which one is known to work with out any problems.
Thank you !

Adding another 1GB of RAM will greatly improve the game's performance, especially in terms of lagging/rubberbanding. But even so, you won't get the same level of performance under Vista as you will with XP.
I would start with the RAM and see how that turns out, then decide if you feel it's warranted to buy a new video card (which will ultimately cost more). But you definitely want more RAM.
Wow super fast response thanks!
I amm sure that I and others who read the info you provide really appriciate it!
Ordered more memory (got 2 GB off Crucial for 79.00) we will see how that goes.

I know you already got an answer, but thought I would also chime in. The memory will be the cheapest and fastest boost in performance with the game, particularly on Vista. I have to say, people have different experiences with running CoX on Vista. I have done a fresh install of XP and ran the game for a while, and then wiped the machine and did a fresh install of Vista. My performance was better on Vista than on XP. Not a HUGE amount better. A matter of between 10 and 15 FPS generally. This was on a P4 3GHz with hyperthreading, 1 GB ram and ATI 9800. The one place that XP DID beat Vista was with zoning. XP pretty consistently loaded about 5 seconds faster than Vista. I have to assume it is because of having only 1GB of RAM, since Vista uses more than XP.
In any case, try the ram out, and then you can decide if you can live with it. My personal opinion is, I wouldn't switch back to XP for anything. Too many things work better for me in Vista. I was a bit on the fence gaming-wise, because I was only running with 1GB or ram. Although I prefered most of the Vista stuff, CoX is the only game I really play, and I wanted it to run as well as I could. I finally upgraded to 2 GB of RAM and it is a whole new game. (Keep in mind, I am also playing on a laptop with a crappy ATI X1400 video card) Now that the game runs with no problems, I can't see any reason to switch back to XP. All of my work applications work (and most run substantially better on vista than XP), and my favorite game runs great.
It really comes down to your preference though.

Yup. Add that other Gig of RAM and Zoning won't even be an issue.
Hi, all. Just posted a new guide up here; it describes how to work around the UAC prompt that pops when running the updater. This is *per-executable*, and not turning off UAC entirely.
HTH,

another thing I found helped me when I was having long zoning times, is the harddrive speed. I went from 5400rpm IDE drives to 7200rpm SATA drives without increasing RAM and my zoning times dropped significantly
I think it's a combination of the 2 to get teh best performance, but no sense replacing harddrives just for zoning... memory is certainly the better route... just something to consider if you're upgrading the drives for other reasons
So, I have Vista Home Premium... I did all those things you suggested on the first page just in case, but my problem is apparently unique and has seen no answer in sight.
I have a pathetic 945 chipset, which should run the game (if not amazingly), dual intel processors, and this is on a Toshiba Laptop with the most updated drivers available.
What essentially occurs is that after the client, i get the small loading tab, but before I actually get into the first full-screen CoX loading screen, i am bombarded by an error message saying that the game crashed. I cannot even LOAD into the game! I have to use my desktop to play, but in a few months all I will have is my laptop and I need to find out how to get it to work.
please help. I would LOVE to have cursor or graphics problems. I can't even play the dang game.
Thanks but yes, reinstalled drivers, reinstalled CCC, set to operate as 2000 SP2. Its done that way for primary user and all other admins. THinking about it now, maybe its something as silly as running CCC and installing drivers on Admin account (even though primary account has admin rights)
