Lighthouse, I'd suggest looking around the EU site a bit. They've got several areas where player submissions are displayed and encouraged. Their forum section, Creative, is for "Fiction, artwork, comics, wallpapers, WinAmp skins... If City of Heroes or City of Villains has inspired you to create something, share it here. " Their Creative Geniuses is a monthly contest. They highlight screenshots and players on the main page.

There's lots of ways Cryptic/NCSoft could be more open to their US creative geniuses.

Edit - Link to EU page Main CoH EU page. Right side, near the top, screenshot with a banner asking you to submit your's.

Community News Fifth submission down is for the Creative Geniuses contest which is held monthly. You can also click on a mini-menu to the right and see the Creative Geniuses as well as other things happening in-game for the community. SOAP was apparently a big success.

Even their fansite page seems to encourage more input than ours.

No, TA shouldn't get a badge for just having the largest collection. That would be a horrible idea.

Instead, I propose that Celtic Bolt gets a badge for PROVIDING the largest collection of fan art of others, completely free with nothing in return!

*nods*

oh it was just a joke Rowr

i think giving badges to anyone for art would be a bad idea because you'd have the non-artistic badge mongers up in arms over an impossible to achieve (for them) badge. there's enough complaining allready without adding one more thing for people to [censored] about.

Goodbye, I guess.

Hehe yeah I know :P I was joking too but I do think CB should get a special recognition!

What about bug hunter? That's out of the range of most people as well.

Hey Lighthouse.

I do think contests could be a fun idea - whether there are any prizes beyond having the winning pieces displayed on the official site is up to you guys, though. As cool as a badge in-game would be, it's far from necessary for it to feel worth while, and I know that an in-game art gallery could prove to be a deceptively large undertaking that may just not be feasible. Cool ideas, don't get me wrong, but I don't think any of us want to delay any other work on the game just for an in-game special nook.

There are movie theaters all over Paragon - maybe some contests could be held for the art on the posters. They could be rotated every three to six months or so, or even yearly, if that would make it a more easily accomplished undertaking. Likewise on designing billboards, or Arachnos propaganda posters, or the like.

If you wanted to put icing on the cake, you could try to find out from the coders if there was a way to make all of those things targettable so that people in-game could see who created the piece currently displayed. A PITA, but an optional one.

Seeing the fan art gallery on the main page getting updated again would be cool, too.

If Sexy Jay needs help coming up with designs for new costume pieces for us - new tights patterns, new chest emblems, new monstrous heads, and so forth - you could hold contests for player-submitted designs. Those would get a lot of paperwork and legal mumbo jumbo to go along with them, I imagine, but I think a lot of us would be very willing to sign on the dotted line to help make the game even more customizable than it already is. I know I would. But I say that as an aspiring MMO concept artist.

If you want to bounce any of these around a bit to work some into a workable proposal, Lightouse, my PM box is always open. Feel free to bug me. I'd be happy to take some of the work off of your hands if you need it.

That's news to me. I only draw for my own benefit, and for my friends.

Regardless, it's free -->Content<-- to them when it is submitted formally. And personally I WOULD like a little recognition, as the only talent most people believe I have is pissing them off at forum-PvP.

Please try to keep it civil, boys.

I'm not keen on the idea of fan art being displayed in-game. It breaks immersion.

That said, however, if Cryptic wanted to hold a contest for the design of something game-related -- say, a movie poster or a concert flyer -- which will be added to the city which would be thematically appropriate, that would be good.

I would like to see fan art featured on the official website. Do it the way other companies do: celebrate the community's involvement in the game.

I think Cryptic sponsoring contests with Fan Art rewards would be great. I also think Cryptic sponsoring Fan Art contests with in game rewards (like a special badge, chest emblem, or something) would be great.

Posted

...it was mentioned...and I agree with...that contests should have no other reward other than being featured on the main website. I would even go as far as saying that a given winner could not win again for "x" amount of time. given some of the folks here are 'professional' this would allow some of the other folks to have a chance at 'winning'.

I am against any Co* sponsored art contest that has an actual reward as I think it goes against the very spirit of 'fan art'.~

Yeah I would agree for more contests and such... like remember the movie contest where the winner got their name on the billboards at the movie theatres around town?

It'd be neat if there could be contests to design new billboards and storefronts and things like that.

Posted

agreed, especially since the same storefront is used for practically every store, which makes the fast food joints look like book stores from the outside. also, after seeing the same billboards for almost 3 years you easily start ignoring them. new billboards would be a nice bit of eye candy, especially if they were designed by the players

Goodbye, I guess.

Offical Website recognition for the wonderful artists that thrive in our little community!

(AKA: Update the Fanart Section!)

First off, I want to say hello to Lighthouse , and thank you for making this thread. I really hope my PM did not catch you too off guard and if it sounded nasty in any way, I appologize (I sent off a PM very similar to the post I made yesterday). I can't tell you how happy it makes me to have someone from the red actually come here asking our opinions.

First off, I'd like to write about what sparked my rant. For years (well, at least over a year) I have noticed that this particular forum seems to operate under a type of /hush mode. That if we speak out too much, we just might lose what little freedom we have. Artists here have had PMs from Devs/Mods with warnings about agreement infractions and such.

Over the last few days I posted a picture (note: no nudity or anything wrong with it) in the Justice forums. The picture was of a Justice player and it got great feedback from those forums. It also got deleted three times (with no PM or explanation). I was shocked. Why oh why would a simple post showing a picture of a character on that server be deleted? There was no explanation, and no PM, just deletion.

I thought by posting that picture there I would 1) draw attention to that character and maybe someone would stroll up to him on the server and say "hey, I saw that pic of you!" 2) Get people to come on over to this forum - most people forget it exists. 3) Get some attention for my art (sure, I'm going to admit that I like it when people see my stuff). All that was turfed because some Mod went on a power trip. It's Modding like that that made me finally leave SWG.

/end rant #2

Ok, so what would I like to see?

Honestly, I think the folks above me have already said some great ideas. I would love to see a yearly contest to have works placed "in game" (can anyone else picture themselves walking by one of Dark Jedi's posters up on a billboard??) or something to that extent, but I'm not holding my breath. What I would like is simple - support. Instead of discouraging this community, I would like to see some support of it - and that needs to start with updating the Fan Art page. Anything more, would just be gravy.

Thanks again for listening, and thanks to all those on here that supported my speaking out.

-Juggy

Indeed. Looking for the newest Fan Art and Screenshot on the main page used to be something I looked forward to...and then they didn't get updated...and went without being updated for ages...

Keep the Fan Art section updated, and give us a place to submit art for viewing by the masses, and that'd be fine by me.

All I'm looking for is updates to the Fan Art page. I'm opposed to anything occuring in-game. Not that the artists don't deserve that kind of recognition, I just think it breaks immersion, which is one of the reasons I love this game as much as I do. I have never felt so immersed in a game. Ever. And I've played my fair share of them. I don't like the idea of badges for artists because it specifically excludes the non-artistic members of the community. I tried to draw once. In third grade. About the same time I tried singing. I was told in no uncertain terms to never do either of those things ever again. I would never be able to get an artist badge on my characters and that's something I'd want as a part-time badge hunter.

So, yeah. Just update the Fan Art page in some way. I know Blizzard puts up 4-5 new pieces of fan art or fan made wallpapers every week or so for World Of Warcraft. Something like that would be awesome. They also do a Screenshot of the Day which is also really cool.

your = Belonging to you.
you're = Contraction meaning "You are."
Ur = The name of an ancient Mesopotamian city.
ur = This is not a word.

The screenshot and fanart section also used to house a maintained fan video sticky, that hasn't been updated in... forever, even though I know a few people who have submitted their material. Is this even going to be bothered to maintained? I wouldn't want to continue making this video for no reason.

Gotta agree.

With the WoW expansion delay & the holiday season upon us, we have alot more people that might be looking at the main site to learn about the game and find out what kind of community we have. An updated fanart site- one that REALLY makes the community to look active and expressive- might be a great thing to highlight.

That's a very good point. Considering the game is based on comic books, supporting fan art seems to go hand-in-hand with CoX. I'm kind of surprised they don't utilize it more - I mean, it's like free publicity. Besides, the artists are doing the hard work - Cryptic could just help by making it known to all the other players.

Okay, I have a suggestion as to how to help those who want to contribute some form of 'fan' artwork. How about we finally... wake up the 'Web Forum Admin.' and get them to raise the Avatar screen-space from 80x80 to at least 100x100 pixels? This is the only web-conference I attend where I am forced to size down (or crop) all the av-pics to be that small.

And since we aren't allowed any graphic Signatures in the posts themselves, the Avs are the only AVenue open for us.

Yes, well let that be DA's problem. It shouldn't become ours. We don't get 50 million sprite locations, 'My Favorites' or 'Signature' panels to fool with. We only get this ONE little bit of screen-space to show any Av graphics. Everything else is forced to be Page-Linked elsewhere... so I would like to have the room. And since NCSoft doesn't Host any of the actual avatar files themselves... disk-space is also not a concern for them.

Jugg....I would hazard to guess that the reason your thread in the other forum was deleted multiple times is because it was found to be art based. why they deleted versus moving...couldnt tell ya...but given it was art based and there is an art forum it was found to be out of line for the forum you posted in. this is purely guess work though.

personally...if any thread is deleted I believe a pm should be sent to the originator of the the thread stating why it was deleted. this would assist in limiting such infractions in the future....

anyways...as I mentioned just a guess why it was deleted.~

Well I have seen even cross posted threads on the Virtue boards, about art or an art post, that were -not- deleted. I think the bigger issue would be more consistent moderation. Granted I understand the Moderator#'s can't send PM's for every thread they delete stating why, it would be nice if it was more consistent. Right now it's like NCAA college football officiating. All over the place!

...as I mentioned, just a guess. (although thinkin what I mentioned is pretty durn close to the mark)

if its a "standard" issue on what is and is not deleted in any given forum...then there are other issues at hand there~
