"Gee, let's have 2 superhero MMOs! We'll compete with ourselves!"
Thus diluting both player bases.

Doesn't Sony have like 4 different fantasy MMOs?
That's like saying Lineage II's fanbase dilluted Lineage 1's...
Or that everytime Marvel releases a superhero game for PS2, it's diluting the fanbase.

Other than wireless device manufacturing (in general), I think that OLG may be the fastest growing industry on the planet.
There should be plenty of titles to go around.

"I9 brings with it a huge new gameplay system: Inventions. Players will be able to craft Enhancements and Costume pieces for their characters using recipes, and salvage that they find while adventuring."
He mentioned Enhancements and Costume pieces, which is all great. But I was kind of hoping to also craft my own temp powers. Like a pack of 6 Web Grenades, similar to the ones you could buy from Siren's Call. I dream of being able to consturct my own gadgets and equipment and have a utility belt of temp powers.
[/ QUOTE ]
From the first moment I heard of the Invention system, I've been wary. I've played on a lot of muds with "loot" creation or crafting or variations on the theme, and they tend to take years to get all the bugs and balance issues worked out. The lack of such a thing, a place where anybody could buy "enhancements" aka loot, with nothing more than a monetary expendature, was the single most appealing feature of CoH beyond the basic premise of the game.
I've heard a lot of "well the invention system is going to be different" but not a lot of solid information on how exactly it will be different. I'm not against a system that:
<ul type="square">[*]works[*]is enjoyable for anyone to at least dabble with[*]avoids any sort of camping for materials to produce specific items (*HATE* that aspect of MxO)[*]is balanced so that you don't need something to defeat even leveled mobs[*]will not start a retroactive redesign of a significant number of powers to force people to use this new system[/list]
Those are my only concerns, inter-related of course, but they are issues I've seen crop up else where and should be either addressed outright, or at least given serious consideration so that they do not cause extensive problems.
*Edit: As described above, being only with enhancements and costume pieces, is perfectly acceptable, but if they start throwing in invention oriented powers, the above list of concerns will definately apply.

To throw another Villain group into the pot, as far as ones that qualify as having a Center, CoT have oranbega under Paragon...
But my money's still on the Council . There have been several dev comments that the 5th column would make a return, and I think I remember seeing something about it being tied in with Boomtown's revitalization? ::shrug::
It'll be something to look forward to. Me I'm ecstatic that ALL my characters, even my newest alts will get a respec right off the bat. That will let me institutionalize my general preference for building to try out new powers, and then respecing into Stamina post SOs if needed once I've got some SO endred slotted.

I love the mention of future Issues/multi-year concepts. I think this game will have really nice continued shelf life.

Are you kidding? If they change Hamidon to *anything* other than a 2 hour session of Dominate on Auto-fire, I'll be thrilled. I don't care *what* Hamidon becomes. Task Force AV, SHOE Quartermaster, New Contact for MAGI After Azuria Finally Gets Canned. As long as the encounter becomes *interesting* again.
[/ QUOTE ]
Guess I'm just worried that it will become a 10 hour session of Dominate on auto fire, playable only once every 13th Tuesday. Absurd yes, but given recent AV change history it's a BIT concerning lol.
If they go the way you suggest great. Maybe that's where the Hamidon costume salvage for the Hamidon comes from - bits of real Hamidon left over from the combined might of joint hero/villain attack to clear the Hive once and for all. Happens in the near future and they travel back to our time. That's it!

I'm not saying this just because I'm a "city of" fan, like most of us who post on these forums are, but..
I don't see how a marvel based mmo could succeed. The thing about "City of" is that the heroes and villains are completely original. With a game based on Marvel everyone will be clamoring to be Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, etc. The Originality factor goes to the wind.
I'll be sticking to "City of" thank you. The variety of costume options in this game speaks bounds for what this game is about-- ORIGINALITY. A Marvel game will never be able to top this game on that count.
[/ QUOTE ]
If done well, I can totally see a Marvel based MMO doing great. There are several groups in which the player can start/be affiliated with - X-Men, Avengers, X-Factor, Defenders, Alpha-Flight, etc. Go here to see a large list of teams the player can join. The teams can work just like the contacts in CoX, but have a Marvel Universe tie-in instead of being based on CoX origins (Science, Mutant, etc.). What comic fan wouldn't want to be a part of The Avengers? I can't wait, myself. Until then, I'll happily play CoX. Also, originality doesn't have to go out the window at all. Players will probably get to mix and match trademark powers to make a hero more like what they want and not have to worry about infringing on the Marvel copyright. Besides, by the time MUO comes out, I'll be more than ready for the switch, as I'm sure most of us will be.

Arc #48845 - Operation: Dirty Snowball
Yes! 5th Column!
I hope they are the 'final boss' in this multi-year arc! That would be sweet!

Thanks for the update Posi, but a bit more info would be great. Here are my areas of interest.
1. While a lvl 50 TF is a nice start, what other plans are there for 50+content?
2. Any information on the Legends system would be greatly appreciated. I am up to 41 alts, and have 4 lvl 50's. I expect to have another lvl 50 before I8 comes out. I would love to be able to continue to progress my favorite characters. Hopefully it will be a non-level based system of progression.
3. What and when will the next retail expansion be? I know you shelved the one you had planed and made most of it free.
4. On the invention system, you mentioned that it will allow for enhancments and costume options. I assume that means jet pack graphics for starters. Which is great for Science, natural, and tech origins. However, will there be options for Mutant and Magic themed types? Perhaps a Magic Carpet or bug wings. Also, what about the enhancments? Will they allow custom enhancments like Hami O's, or will they be new enhancments that add different things? Like perhaps an enhancment that adds a little fire damage to an attack. Or a Acid or psychic resist enhancment.
More info would be great!
Right, let's list all the villains that have a power centre.
Clockwork: all powered by the Clockwork King's TK. Except, of course, for the ones in Cap au Diable...
Tsoo: draw their mystical powers from Hmong ancestrial spirits.
Sky Raiders: initially funded by theft from the US military, later unknowingly supported by Nemesis.
Banished Pantheon: their mortal and undead agents draw their power from the gods exiled by Tielekku.
Circle of Thorns: Oranbega could be said to be their "center of power".
Freakshow: their power comes largely from Excelsior, plus they are supported on the sly as Crey's black-bag troops.
Crey: long overdue for a revamp, IMO, as by the end of the CoH storyline the corporation is on the ropes and the Countess is (putatively at least) in jail.
Carnies: like the Clockwork, the whole group supposedly draws its power from Vanessa DeVore and her mask, which are out of the picture at the end of their story.
Malta: as those who have done Crimson's missions know, it is entirely possible that Malta's true masters have yet to be revealed....
Just off the top of my head.
As for the Council...I don't think they really have a center of power, despite their leader's name. They fund themselves, so they're not someone's puppet. They might be said to have an ideological base, but that would require they first have an ideology, which they do not. Their alliance with the Nictus is supposed to be severed as of the end of the Kheldian War arcs, but that wasn't followed up on for CoV.

Can you pinpoint where it said the 5th will return?
I imagine praetorians, rikti, DE, council, nemesis, or banished pantheon will be the baddies (my guess is in that order).
See, the villains and heroes need to band together. Those groups oppose arachnos and heroes. The 5th will have it in for the council, but thats it.
Someone once suggested a moonbase arc, where the 5th still reside (that would be KEWL!!!! ) <-- posi, implement this
I do believe someone mentioned a rescue hero1 from rikti homeworld, so my money would be rikti or praetorian (noticed how they faded away, then several contests about praetorians showed up?).
50 Tanks: Invul/ss, Fire/ice/fire, Ice/em, Stone/fire
WP/Stone, dark/dark, shld/mace
50 Other: WS, SS/dark/sc brute, BS/Regen/WM scrpr, fire/fire/force blaster, rad/kin corr, mind/rad ctrl, ill/storm cntrl

Not too sure how I feel about this Marvel thing. The cool side of it is for XBox and PC players to both be able to play it. It's also the downside. It may pull people from CoX which I'm concerned about. Will Spiderman and Magento serve as contacts or AVs or will players be able to get Spiderman's powers but not call him/her Spiderman? I think being able to do Marvel powers for their heroes/villains just under a different name would totally make the original heroes/villains not so unique. I dunno. I'm also bit concerned because we have CoX people going to different projects(OMG, I MISS CUPPA!) and then red names who've been missing in action for a while or ones that later are confirmed no longer with CoX. Makes me wants to say Oh Noes! 3 times. Bill.. And to think about all the problems ATI users will have just doesn't help. :-b
