Besides, by the time MUO comes out, I'll be more than ready for the switch, as I'm sure most of us will be.

There's one. How many to follow?

Oooo look, the marvel MMO lets me do X, CoH/V doesn't. Oooo, the marvel one has better performance cuz it's written under the heavy guidance of MS and thus will be coded in D3D... heading out. Oooo, the marvel one let's me be a wolvie clone without getting the smackdown by the mods. 50K players exodus.

Sorry folks, not seeing an upside here.

Unless Cryptic intentionally makes the combat system completely different and uses the extra advertisement to gain more players.

Whatever. We'll see. For now, I'll maintain my pessimism.

Bill, can I ask you a serious question?

How long do you want City of Heroes to exist without a sequel? As it is now, with just issues and perhaps future expansions to sustain it?

I've been here since day 1 and even I most likely will want a sequel in another year or two. Simply adding more graphic effects onto three year old code just leads to more bugs.

In the 2-3 years it'll take for this Marvel MMO to be developed, beta'd, and released, I fully expect CoH's lifespan to be towards it's end. I'll be here until the servers get shut down, but expecting more than 4 years of life out of a MMO in this day and age is asking for too much.

Great idea. Comdemn a game before you've seen anything about it other than Marvel and Cryptic are working together to make it. Brilliant strategy. And while you're at it, insult anyone who might be excited about the prospect of playing a new Super Hero MMO, because we all know there should only be one choice no matter how old it is (or will be). That's right, folks, new = BAD! Excellent.

I'm not saying this just because I'm a "city of" fan, like most of us who post on these forums are, but..

I don't see how a marvel based mmo could succeed. The thing about "City of" is that the heroes and villains are completely original. With a game based on Marvel everyone will be clamoring to be Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, etc. The Originality factor goes to the wind.

I'll be sticking to "City of" thank you. The variety of costume options in this game speaks bounds for what this game is about-- ORIGINALITY. A Marvel game will never be able to top this game on that count.

    [/ QUOTE ]

If done well, I can totally see a Marvel based MMO doing great. There are several groups in which the player can start/be affiliated with - X-Men, Avengers, X-Factor, Defenders, Alpha-Flight, etc. Go here to see a large list of teams the player can join. The teams can work just like the contacts in CoX, but have a Marvel Universe tie-in instead of being based on CoX origins (Science, Mutant, etc.). What comic fan wouldn't want to be a part of The Avengers? I can't wait, myself. Until then, I'll happily play CoX. Also, originality doesn't have to go out the window at all. Players will probably get to mix and match trademark powers to make a hero more like what they want and not have to worry about infringing on the Marvel copyright. Besides, by the time MUO comes out, I'll be more than ready for the switch, as I'm sure most of us will be.

I'm in the dark, what was Posi referring to when he mentioned a project between Cryptic and Microsoft?

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Go here.
  5. I, for one, am hoping for Epic Levels that will further differentiate player characters past 50. We have a little bit of that with Patron Powers and such, but I really want levels 51-60 that open up an entirely new power pool choice. Maybe these pools further augment specific powers - who knows. I just want more
  6. Agreed. I don't understand how some people can get pinched about this, but then some people like being pinched, regardless.
  7. Well, here's hoping that the expansion will let us take our heroes and villains beyond level 50 - epic levels, perhaps? Of course, I have to get one of my many alts to 50 first, but that's besides the point.
  8. FOR THE HORDE!

    oops, wrong game...
  9. 2 years and I still don't have a level 50 character, lol. Thank you alt-iholism!

    Oh yeah, and Happy 2-years!

You know, for *once* I completely love a piece of design by the devs, and what happens?

    Everyone else hates it.

I like the Patron Powers, I like the reddish electricity, it's cool all around, imho. Sadly, hardly anyone seems to agree.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'm right there with you. I actually designed Deadnaught with the thinking that he would align himself with Ghost Widow. The PPP is just another additional way towards that goal.
  11. [ QUOTE ]
Really, if you're so concerned about your villain's character being "tainted" by Patron Pools, you're just too uncreative to deal with it.

Not all of the Ancillary Pools fit my heroes. But you know what? I thought of ways that they could. Everyone complaining here isn't limited by the game—they're limiting themselves.

I like Chum better. Nothing wrong with campiness here and there, otherwise James Bond would have been a failed series.
  13. SS/INV on one of my Brutes and DM/INV on another.
  14. You know, while we're on the subject of coming up with useless and brainless ideas, I want to ask the devs the following:

Where's the much ballyhooed skill system they couldn't stop talking about months ago? Was supposed to be some super amazing system they didn't want to share at the time so other games wouldn't rip it off. Where's the power tinting/coloring system they screamed about once? Where's the interesting content that doesn't take place in warehouses, offices, or caves? Where are these things that would actually improve the game? You devs gave all kinds of lip service about the coming of these things, but now nothing. What gives?

Just because you're in SG mode doesn't mean you automatically get Prestige. You still have to do things.

    [/ QUOTE ]

So if I enter SG mode with some other members of my SG, I then break out the boombox and dance a jig for 12 hours, I get prestige for "doing something?" BRILLIANT! You sir, are SUPER DESIGNER!

You know that half full glass in front of you? Its not actually empty.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Don't you mean, "You know that half full glass in front of you? It's not actually half empty." What you said was a classic non-sequitur. But I understand what you were trying to say - it's adorable, btw.

This was posted on my SG boards this morning by someone who attended GenCon this last weekend:
    [ QUOTE ]
    Other news from GenCon...

SG bases will not be purchased with Influence, they'll be purchased with something called 'Prestige', and you'll earn Prestige for the SG while you are in SuperGroup Mode.

Zeb said they'd be datamining for this so that once Prestige is implemented, already active SGs will have lots of it.

So, if we want to have a rockin' SG base as soon as we can, we should all start playing our X characters in SuperGroup Mode, pretty much all the time.

    So sayeth the devs.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Personally, I think the datamining of time spent in SG mode stinks. I don't know of a single SG out there that uses SG mode over an official SG costume and think it's a bad idea. I would rather have my SG dump 100 million a month in Influence into a base than be obligated to log in my character, enter a door mission, put him in SG mode, then go to bed just so I can build 'prestige' to pay base rent.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You're kidding me. Who came up with this brain-fart? No one prances about in their SG mode – there’s no benefit to it other than looking like everyone is color coordinated. Now, if their was a bonus attached to being in SG mode - say, a 5% ACC bonus or something - then more people would have opted into SG mode when on with their SG. Also, to spring this "Prestige" thing on everyone and say, "Oh, you can't buy a base with Influence, you need this all new currency no one's heard of" is just bad design and planning - period. Devs, you can't have people think that saving up on influence will let SG's buy bases when it goes live only to yank that chain and create a new currency at the last minute - a currency no active player ever planned for. I hate to say it, but his is indicative of the design by the cuff way you guys do things. You have to think these things out before pulling a stunt like this. Do you actually hate your customers or something? Or just clueless? Yeah, I’m being harsh, but [censored], the poor choices that keep cropping up around here is just mind-numbingly frustrating.

Just for the record, my SG has almost 50 million influence that we were putting aside for bases. What the hell are we supposed ot do with all that influence now? Yeah, great thinking there, guys.

    Hi all --

We've been getting lots of questions about the CoV pre-order... specifically, which exclusive item is available at which retailer. Here's the list:

-Crab Spider Battle Helmet: EB Games (male helmet)
-Helm of the Blood Widows: GameStop (female helmet)
-Arachnos Mystic Helm: Best Buy (male helmet)
-Wolf Spider War Helmet: All other U.S. retailers & Europe (male helmet)

I've recently received graphics of all 4 helmets and am working to get them posted for you to look at. If this doesn't happen today, I will try my hardest to have them available for you on Monday. I'll post again with a link when this is done.

    Yours in villainy,
    Alexa

    [/ QUOTE ]

Shouldn't there be both a male AND female version of each helmet from each retailer? Doesn't make much sense to restrict it to certain sexes. What if a gamer doesn't like playing a certain sex?

We're making some tweaks with Defiance in the upcoming patch.

It is not getting a major overhaul though. Just tweaking the defiance so it starts to kick in earlier. The overall buffs posted earlier are staying about the same (getting only slightly better), but you will be recieving a damage buff earlier in your health bar now.

This will be reflected in the Defiance meter as well. We've made some tweaks to that as well.

I want to stress that you actually can end up being buffed over 500% with Defiance. (500% is the max buff for Blasters) This actually does nothing except protect you from damage debuffs.

This is one of the rare instances in Issue 5 where a solo character is able to reach a cap without help (or inspirations).

    [/ QUOTE ]

Can you seriously come on this board and think that defiance is a great power for blasters to get? Seriously? This is just setting the precedence to not heal a blaster so they can dish out more damage. And considering how fragile blasters are in the late game, there isn't a blaster with half a brain who will let their health fall if they can avoid it. Try playing a blaster in its 40's and you'll see. Get off the designer pedestal and see the game from the player's perspective for once.

You want to help blasters? Give them/us a secondary status effect defence power. We would much rather have that than this useless defiance crap.
  20. I wish your brother well, Jack, and hope for his safe and quick return.
  21. Defiance is pointless if I'm dead. I can lose 40% of my health with just one alpha strike from an LT and his minions. Hell, it can happen just from an LT in some circumstances. This defiance effect is actually the perfect advocate to support upping Blaster defenses (instead of the incomprehensible lowering of it for I5 - this thinking still floors me). Increase the survivablity of Blasters and Defiance might actually be valuable. With increased HP and lowered defences cancelling each other out, Defiance is pointless.
  22. The new comic is night and day better over the previous version. The story actually interested me and the writing was very good. Congrats on the rebirth of the CoH comic.

Mission customization: Choosing between "regular" mobs and +2 level mobs is not really what I would call a customized mission.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Sigh. That isn't at all what I meant. Mission Customization means, well, a mission has been customized. It's where we go back over old missions and add new art & functionality.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You know what might be really "super" is adding in actual interactive instanced mission content - breakable walls, throwable objects, exploding things when hit, etc. Since instanced missions are just a heartbeat away from being a single player experience, it would not be any harder to implement than say a "new" version of a trial zone called something fancy and slapped into a new update. And since the mobs are pretty much the "stand-around-and-wait-until-the-player-finds-us" type, it would not interfere with the flow of the mission to have this kind of interactivity.

Now, I don't expect this kind of interactivity to be in the open game world - that would be to problematic. But in instanced missions, I've been expecting this kind of interactivity since the first update. Maybe I should say that I've been hoping... Anyway, new fog effects and some new glowies to click on don't make the missions more interesting. Hopefully this isn't your idea of "updating" the older missions. My interest in CoH has been waning for the last month or so because of the lack of interesting updates to missions and other areas in the game (the Force Sensitive slots is still a huge thorn, imo. I want to make my character epic, not start all over with the kewl AT).

I am level 47 and to get the badges I want for these rewards I have two choices: find a portal mission that contains these enemies and farm it over and over or run around the lower level areas causing havoc.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Choice 3: Exemplar to an appropriate level Hero and help them get XP (and work off your debt) while you both get the badge. I know... it's just crazy enough to work.

    [/ QUOTE ]

But what if he doesn't have debt to work off? Not everyone has a running tally of debt.
