Besides, by the time MUO comes out, I'll be more than ready for the switch, as I'm sure most of us will be.

There's one. How many to follow?
Oooo look, the marvel MMO lets me do X, CoH/V doesn't. Oooo, the marvel one has better performance cuz it's written under the heavy guidance of MS and thus will be coded in D3D... heading out. Oooo, the marvel one let's me be a wolvie clone without getting the smackdown by the mods. 50K players exodus.
Sorry folks, not seeing an upside here.
Unless Cryptic intentionally makes the combat system completely different and uses the extra advertisement to gain more players.
Whatever. We'll see. For now, I'll maintain my pessimism.

Here is something you may not have thought of. How about the reverse. Can you imagine cloned Statesman walking around in the Marvel Universe? I can. There is no doubt that there will be some players who will leave. However, if Marvel system isn't like COH then they will probably come back. With another MMO it will make both companies compete for our business and competition is almost always better than monopolies. Also when this game goes the way that all MMOs do then you will have a younger MMO along the same lines to play in. It's a win/win situation for all of us because that means the genre won't die and that's what we really want to continue to be able to play Superheroes. So don't worry it might be the best for all. I doubt that the system will be the same as this one as far as enhanceable powers go.
It's kinda obvious that we're looking at the return of the 5th Column here. Many people suspect that they'll be revived by the Reichsman who's gonna break out of his suspended animation somehow.
At first I would have thought that Reichsman might be allies with Lord Recluse. Considering his eastern european heritidge and all but then again Nazism is nothing like Technocratism which Lord Recluse's organisation is aiming for. So it does make sense that both Arachnos and the rest of the world would see the Reichsman and the new 5th Column as a global threat.
The question then is. Why would they be even more powerful? A supervillain fresh out of the freezer has no knowledge of the current world, no connections and no cash to fund such an operation as reforming a huge militia. I'd be curious to see how the new 5th Column is funded and organised. Maybe in the Nazi controlled universe the Well of Furies was never destroyed?
Ubermenche Incarnates? Now thats INTERESTING!!

Great idea. Comdemn a game before you've seen anything about it other than Marvel and Cryptic are working together to make it. Brilliant strategy. And while you're at it, insult anyone who might be excited about the prospect of playing a new Super Hero MMO, because we all know there should only be one choice no matter how old it is (or will be). That's right, folks, new = BAD! Excellent.

Bill, can I ask you a serious question?
How long do you want City of Heroes to exist without a sequel? As it is now, with just issues and perhaps future expansions to sustain it?
I've been here since day 1 and even I most likely will want a sequel in another year or two. Simply adding more graphic effects onto three year old code just leads to more bugs.
In the 2-3 years it'll take for this Marvel MMO to be developed, beta'd, and released, I fully expect CoH's lifespan to be towards it's end. I'll be here until the servers get shut down, but expecting more than 4 years of life out of a MMO in this day and age is asking for too much.
[/ QUOTE ]
I never thought I would say this but I absolutely agree with Taser but he is right. This game will end but the genre will go on and that's good thing and the sequel will come out that will be better. Good point Taser.

That's a long the same lines as I'm thinking... Seems like MUO could end up as what we in these forums think of as CoX v2.0
Makes me a little sad, but nothing does last forever. And, yeah, my last night of playing CoX will probably be when they pull the plug and the servers get powered down.
Not a single word on any lv50+ (non TF/SF or PvP related).... what was that about the Legend system, that we will play our lv50 Chars again ?
Sigh I love this game, I just... would love to keep my main playing too. Alt's are fun and all... but I'd like to keep playing my mains really too. When they are 50, finally all powers and slots there.. you know.
Sorry, I am just disappointed Don't mind me.
Am I late to the post? What's happened so far? Someone fill me in!

Where it the level 50 content????? Legends System.. i thought that started in 8 and came in 9 and 10??

d like to start out by mentioning Issue 8: To Protect and Serve. This is a hero-centric Issue that finally levels the playing field between Heroes and Villains.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm not sure why exactly but this statement bothers me. I do not perceive the "playing field" to be balanced in anyway. In fact I see it to be slanted fully to the heroes advantage in terms of PVP. I sure hope villains get some loving besides epic archetypes or this will quickly turn sour for a lot of PVP'ers.
I hope my concerns are disproved once more specific information is released.

"Leveling the playing field" doesn't refer to pvp, it's refering to the lack of things like mayhem missions on the CoH side. While pvp may be unbalanced, not all comparisons between the two games are refering to pvp. O yeah, can't wait for all this stuff.

To me, the villain group that becomes a major threat to both sides will be Rikti with the unleashing of the Rikti Homeworld zone...

Dear lord, I can't believe I got this far down the thread before someone mentioned that. Hello, they have a whole zone, with a ship that does JACK!
Come on! What is the only thing that gets 2 ideologies to work together? Hatred of a third!
Nictus! Nictus! Nictus! Where is the villains equivalent of an epic AT?
What issue will it be placed. I would be satisfied with playing a hero AT if a lvl 50 villains would count.

Woohoo! Bring back the 5th Column. I'm ready to kill some Nazis again, thank you.
Besides Positron already mentioned the 5th making a return in one of his other magazine interviews, a month or two back. He just didn't specify an issue. Now we have something to look forward to, at least a target issue for the return.
Welcome back 5th Column. You've been gone too long already.
[ QUOTE ]
It's kinda obvious that we're looking at the return of the 5th Column here...
[/ QUOTE ]
I think the 5th will definitely return, but I kind of doubt that is the "common foe" to which Positron was referring. It wouldn't make much sense game-wise for it to be the 5th anyway. There really isn't any reason why heroes and most/all villains would unite against an human/earthly enemy. Many or most villains would just hook up with the 5th like they've hooked up with Arachnos.
My guess is that it will be the Rikti. It is likely that the Rikti home world won the zone poll they took awhile back, and that could easily be a common foe that everyone would unite against. It's easy to understand everyone uniting against alien invaders who wish to take over or destroy the world and/or turn everyone into Rikti. That kind of common foe makes perfect sense.
Another possibility could be the Rularuu/Shadow Shard. They are also alien invaders, the Shadow Shard is under-used, Pocket D's is in the Shadow Shard, there have been MANY posts from players suggesting that they allow Hero/Villain team-ups in the Shard, the IoP trial is in the Shard, and so on. And with the addition of so many temporary powers and such that allow flight, navigating around the Shadow Shard wouldn't be quite so difficult as before. So, it being the Rularuu would also make sense.
The only problem I see with the Rikti or Rularuu is their level limitation. There aren't any Rikti under 30 or Rularuu under 40. But as the original Rularuu invasion showed, they can be lower level. Therefore, a few changes could allow lower levels characters to participate. The Rikti home world could also encompass multiple zones which would accommodate a variety of levels. After all, it could be only high-level Rikti that have come to Earth, but their home world could have all levels.
Its good for cryptic that they got the deal and they definately deserve congrats in a business sense ( Smooth setup - your competition is yourself) - but I dont think this bodes well at all for the MMO or Superhero game genre unless they get some new blood with some fresh ideas of balance, fun and *true* comic book sensibility.
That or they keep the old developer guard under high, high scrutiny when developing this title.
Because if im logging in to play The Hulk im not going to be interested in *needing* someone with me to play Storm so I can take on a named villain and live up to my own namesake.
I could just log into this game if I wanted that.
[ QUOTE ]
I'm not saying this just because I'm a "city of" fan, like most of us who post on these forums are, but..
I don't see how a marvel based mmo could succeed. The thing about "City of" is that the heroes and villains are completely original. With a game based on Marvel everyone will be clamoring to be Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, etc. The Originality factor goes to the wind.
I'll be sticking to "City of" thank you. The variety of costume options in this game speaks bounds for what this game is about-- ORIGINALITY. A Marvel game will never be able to top this game on that count.
[/ QUOTE ]
Are you serious? If what you posit is true, Hollywood would never make a sequel or remake of anything.
If that was the case, Marvel never would have sued COH for copyright infringement because of all the wannabies
I suspect most of the people here would love to fight side by side with Wolverine. Rescue Jean Grey, web sling like spiderman.
Fight Magneto and Dr. Doom or fight with them, depending.
I am not going to say DOOM, but you have to ask yourself, why would a company compete with itself?
I can think of several reasons why a company would do this and I can think of nothing good for COX when asking that question.
I see DC coming out next year with their MUG and I think there is a sound reason for grabbing Marvel . . .
I do not envy Positron and frankly looking at it now, Statesman appears to have abandoned his buddy when things started to look dark

Dear Positron,

I had two questions about what you had to say:
Are any of our prior Devs now working on the Marvel/Microsoft MMO?
When you say this:

What do you mean? Content-wise, Heroes still have more to do than villains (More TFs, more trials, more zones, etc). Levelling the playing field PvP-wise? Yeah, heroes have that advantage as well.
Please tell me your thoughts Positron, and until next time!

Thanks for eight fun years, Paragon.
Just wanted to congratulate Cryptic on the contract to make the Marvel MMO. What is great is that with all this extra funding coming into this development studio there will be a knock on effect to CoH in that the company will be larger as a whole, have better access to development tools to use on their projects plus the ability to have more staff members to oversee developments.
While I realise that alot of the funding will be directed at the Marvel MMO as Microsoft is footing the bill I'm more thinking more of the profits Cryptic will recieve from the sales and maintainence of the game which will be THEIR money to spend how they feel suitable. I feel that with CoX being Cryptics first love and first 'baby' it'll never be forgotten and will receive alot of the benefits of this new cash flow from Marvel MMO profits.
Once again folks, well done. Since you're working on it I'll have to take a look when its nearly ready to release.
I will also says this. SOE has been dying a slow death for years, with major corperations turning their backs on them in favor of superior and younger development studios I'd say the loss of this major contract will hopefully put a nail in their coffin.
