Although as addicts they have an illness, it is hard to feel sympathetic to a rampaging, green-skinned, muscle-bound junkie.

[/ QUOTE ]

Addiction is not an illness, it's a choice.

[/ QUOTE ]
They probably mean mental illness, although it's easily argued that only the FIRST hit is a choice. It's an illness in the sense that drug junkies don't have a lot of choice in suffering withdrawl symptoms - their body now behaves in an unnatural way.

And there's a hostage mission early on where the rescued hostages tell you that the enemies (Skulls, I think) tried to force them to take Dyne. That's not a choice by any stretch of the imagination, and could easily be a regular MO for the Skulls and/or recruitment method for the Trolls.

Trolls believe strongly in survival of the fittest. The junior members are known respectively as Trollkin, Jutal, Ogre, and Caliban. The highest ranking Trolls have mutated into grotesque abominations – they have horns, bulge with oversized muscles, and are relatively sexless; these are called Gardvord.

[/ QUOTE ]

Nice article, but the last sentance in this quote just kills it. What a copout! Not having female Troll models in-game is one thing, but to turn around and try to say that some of the Gardvords are former females....Lame excuse. Very lame. Are you going to explain that some CoT Mages are really females too? Maybe the Skulls are crossdressing too?

Pffft. Stop being lazy and get some female baddies for the groups that are missing them. Yes. I know there are female baddies. Carnies, Crey Agents, Vahz Eidolons...but diversify!

[/ QUOTE ]

Skulls, like Hellions, have girlfriends. At least the ones in the Rogue Isle do, I expect the Paragon City ones will shortly.

I'm alright with sexless Trolls, but you are right about the CoT. Succubi are female, but some of the mages ought to be too.

FYI, Grendel's Mom can't be an AV - because she's one of my heroes, and has been for over a year. ^_^

She was merely filled with despair when her son got involved in gang activity and drugs, but that turned to rage when he was killed (or so we think!) by Atta. She purposely overdosed on superadine, half-hoping it would kill her and half-hoping it'd empower her to get revenge. So now she's a Stone/SS Tanker (cross between a Caliban and an Ogre) and, well, not so bright anymore. But she remembers that she hates Trolls.

If Grendel *is* still alive and an AV, that would seriously mess with Emily's whole worldview. That'd be interesting.

Have we ever actually fought Grendel in any missions? I mean I've beaten up Frost Fyre and Atta a few times But I don't remenmber fighting grendel... so if grendel is the AV he could make his move on Peregine Island and put the trolls back on the map in the 50's.

Hi there!

Just a couple of things:

One: Unless I´m mistaken, Trolls are very uncommon to see in Steel Canyon: they keep a merely symbolic presence there.

And two: ¿Why no mention about their feud with the Outcasts? Both gangs seem to hate each other for something more than simple territorial issues. Yet the origin of this hate has never been explained (at least to my knowledge)

Other than that, I have greatly enjoyed the article, nice work! =D

[/ QUOTE ]

I think the hate is purely territorial.

Outcasts want to control x and y parts of the city, but trolls inhabit those spots. Like animals protecting their territory, the trolls fight the outcasts.
Atleast, thats how I see it.

It's explained in a round about way in the game fiction. The Trolls work for the Family as part of the Superadine distribution ring. The Outcasts work for the Warriors as part of the magic artifacts black market. The Warriors and the Family encourage their subordinate gangs to fight each other in an effort to encroach on each others territory without risking their own men.

If I remeber correctly.
The Warriors give the Outcasts Artifacts to enhance their powers, who in turn give some to the Hellions.

The Family give Trolls guns and Skulls vhemicals, which are turned into 'Dyne and sold to the Troll in exchange for guns.

The Family and the Warriors are locked in a feud, abd as such their little minions fight each other too.

Actually, the mission arc where we see the Tsoo trading with the Outcasts reveals that the artifacts they were giving the Outcasts, while in fact increases the power of the users- they also slowlly start devouring the soul of the user.

In short, it was a calculated move by the Tsoo to trick the Outcasts into paying them for the priviledge to kill themselves in an unimaginablly horrible way.

So, yes, the Tsoo hate everyone, and are total bastards.

Incidentally, in this same story arc, the Tsoo were selling a drug to the Trolls that had a similar power-enhancing effect as Superadyne- except it has a lethal reaction with Dyne, killing anyone who used both drugs at once.

Despite that little mistake, it still was pretty interesting. I'm particularly interested in the Troll Arch-Villain that's hinted at in Atta's file. Could that be Grendel, who we've heard the Trolls talking about but have never seen?

[/ QUOTE ]

Actually, I bet Grendel faked his own death and went underground. He probably had some master plan to make Atta look like the leader of the trolls to draw attention away from himself - also, he may have had something to do with Julius the Troll sending you on a mission to stop Atta after he tired of the charade. Either way, Grendel is probably a ton smarter than Atta and the other trolls. Atta was just really strong - Grendel is probably fairly intelligent too, and knows all the secrets of superadine.

It should also be noted that Outcasts see themselves as petty heroes, and some mission text states that they're enforcing laws to the extreme (one I remember jokes that they put someone in the hospital for jaywalking). They're obviously not going to be liking or be liked by a group of severe drug addicts.

Hey, you know what I'd like to see? An organizational chart of who reports to who, the alliances and rivalries, etc, in order to get the bigger picture. We find this information out as we complete missions, but an overview would be nice reference.

Heck, if someone can post the connections, I'll put something graphic together and host it.

Hololad - Mutant Ill/Kin Controller
Stormy Satyr - Grav/Storm Controller
Lt. MacReady - AR/Dev Blaster
Holobad - Mind/Psi Dominator

Now, now ... be nice.

I don't yet have a theory on why the Circle is male-only, unless it's a fraternity type of thing. And really, when plumbing the depths of orders like the Templars, Golden Dawn, Lovecraftian cultists, and whatnot, my recollections are that they are pretty male-dominated.

Not that we shouldn't have female mages ... but with the fiction I try to support the game, which in turn supports the CoH universe, which in turn leads to the fiction...
Something like that.

cheers,
Arctic Sun

Hang about, how can you tell they're even male under those draping robes? All we can see are glowing eyes!

Remember Zoltar from Battle of the Planets. He may look male, talk male, even *seem* male, but if there's any sign of frosty pink lip gloss, he's a she.
