Screenshot Tag Info

Jpeg screenshots are now automatically tagged with information regarding the location of the image and the members of your team. This is done using IPTC headers.

More Information:
The following are added as IPTC Keywords:
<ul type="square">[*]City of Heroes[*]coh[*]human-readable map name (if there is one)
A number of IPTC Keywords are also added which specify exactly where in the world the picture was taken.
<ul type="square">[*]cohtagged[*]coh:x=float[*]coh:y=float[*]coh:z=float[*]coh:zone=map_name
By default, the IPTC Title is set to the time the screenshot was taken. Alternatively, the /screenshot_title command can be used to specify the IPTC Title tag.
<ul type="square">[*]/screenshot_title arbitrary IPTC title string
Finally, the IPTC Caption is set to the names of all the heroes on your team (including yours). If you aren't on a team, then your hero's name is used.

These tags are readable by Photoshop, Picasa, and Flickr. Some people have already loaded some CohTagged screenshots at Flickr.

You can see what people have done with tags like these for real-world photos: Geotagging.

Have fun!

This is fantastic !

Now whats the command to disable all this extra imbedded info, for those people who just want to take a regular screen pic again for whatever their reason for wanting to.

It *is* a regular picture, it's imbedded into it sight unseen, unless you use a program to see it, I *believe*.

So you can normally only see it in a program or on a web-site that discerns the tags so that you can "search" for it easier on web pages.

It would also make figuring out who broke the NDA on a Beta Test too, but I don't think that is the primary purpose.

Still here, even after all this time!

Poz,

For us people who don't use Photoshop could you make this work for Paint Shop Pro also?

I would highly doubt it D, since Cryptic didn't create Paint Shop Pro which, while I don't use, I assume from your request doesn't read these standardized headers. I'd recommend that you send a request for this feature to JASC for them to include in a future release.

Have a good one!

You can also view the tag info by using the freeware IrfanView image viewer. Go to the Image menu, select Information and click on the IPTC info button.

Aww, you beat me to it. IrfanView is extremely win for freeware. It's only a viewer for the most part, (not an editor) but I slap it in as the default image viewer for every computer I work on.

Along with this, you'll need to download the IPTC plug in linked on that site; "iv_misc.zip" file.

After doing that, and going to the Flickr site and downloading a couple of the pictures from there, I am NOT seeing any of this tag information from those pictures? None of the information that the picture says is tagged is showing up in Irfanview's IPTC view?

Am I missing a step?

For whatever reason, if someone doesn't want this extra imbedded info, is there a way to disable it being added, or at the very least an easy way to remove it afterwards. That was my question, which your reply does nothing to answer, only to repeat that it's still a picture. This is obvious.

My question was very simple and direct, and in no way presents that I thought that the screen pics were no longer graphic files. Only that there was now more info contained within that had nothing to do with graphics. Some people might not have a use for this, and thus not want it added.

That's some seriouly powerful paranoia you got going on there. Most of the time if you save the image again the headers won't be saved (if they're anything like EXIF anyway). Try to find an image program that doesn't support them (most of them) and use that, it will almost certainly strip the headers.

looks like you have a parity error in there some where

he is just explaining that any random program that can process a jpg will have no problems with it, in case that is your concern.

If file size is your concern, stop worrying. A few dozen bytes is nothing to a graphic.

Nothing of the sort, was a simple question since there are people who want to know, and I am one of them.

The response had nothing to do with the question.
I am a "results" oriented person. I dislike having to dance around something to get nothing accomplished. That makes me speak bluntly, and directly. It is not a "nice" sort of conversation about the weather. But it is what it is, and accomplishes what it's meant to.
Even my free time is at a premium, I would rather spend more of it accomplishing, than trying to.

Thank you for taking the time out to insult me and provide a humorous link to further your triumph over me. You should accept the fact that some people speak directly and to the point, and if you take the time to read my previous post, there was no malice there, only a desire for answers. As you can see from my low post count, I won't be engaging in an exchange of rapier wit with you, so be safe, live long, and hug your mother once a week. Sound advice from a neighbor I used to have.

*Edited for errors.

This is insanely awesome. You can now make a CoH Screenie Web gallery that will auto-sort itself. Just take your screenshot, upload it, and BAM, it's in the right place. I loves it!

I believe JPEGs have a header component for storing this type of text info anyway, so it's either empty or useful information is stored in it. There's absolutely no good reason to disable this, pick your battles man.

Ashlocke,

Now I'm a bit intrigued. If it's not paranoia as one of our esteemed posters suggested, what is your concern with the added information? If you don't use it or need it then why does it bother you that it exists?

I'm actually curious about your concerns and am not trying to be antagonistic.

And Pos,

Very nice! Kudos to you and your minions, er sidekicks!

Posted

Oh, and Ashlocke,

Maybe this will help you understand a bit more about JPEG files and the extra info that can be stored in them:

From What is an EXIF JPEG file?
[ QUOTE ]

The Exchangeable Image File (EXIF) format is an international specification that lets imaging companies encode metadata information into the headers or application segments of a JPEG file. This metadata information includes shutter speed, aperture, and the date and time the image was captured.

Current digital cameras store images using EXIF compressed files. These files use the classic JPEG DCT format. This means the image data can be read by any application supporting JPEG, including all Web browsers, image editing, desktop presentation, and document creation software programs.

[/ QUOTE ]

A nice watered down explanation is here.

yes! this is the exact thing i saw in my head when poz mentioned it: hero photo galleries. and how funny would it be to build galleries on the normal photo gallery sites where folks usually put their real-life galleries? galleries may not have been the original intent, but in one quick move the coding team casted fortitude on the community . mad props again for that.
