Dev Response - Zone Events
Would it be possible to increase the rate at which the fires in steel occur (just for test purposes)?
I've been waiting on and off for about 3 hours to experience one and have been unlucky I guess in finding one.
Thanks.
The Steel Canyon fires are surprisingly fun, although the accuracy and damage of the firefighter packs can be infuriating since it takes several heroes multiple applications to extinguish a fire.
Also, it'd be nice if NPC's on the ground occasionally shouted "Don't cross the streams!"

It's nice to see more zone events coming finally.

Good ideas and glad to see them, I'm sooooo tired of that ghost ship . It would be cool if there was a torching in Atlas Park somewhere also.
The Skyway Troll Rave was very cool! I've been waiting forever for Gargantuan Male Build Trolls. Any chance of making all Troll bosses, or atleast Elite Bosses like Atta into Gargantuan Male Builds? It just fits soooo well.
One thing about the Rave: As Supa Trolls spawned, they just ran willy-nilly out into Sky. And it was a LOT of Trolls. Isn't that just a bit too dangerous for the players? It's basically like getting trained by the game. Wouldn't comment on it if it wasn't for the fact that there were so many Super Trolls spawning.
I think these (and other "events" or monsters in zones) need two things to make it really good.
They need to happen slightly more often (says the person that still don't have Babbage on my character I've played over a year) and players need more aware of them when they are happening. Maybe not quite a broadcast in the Zone that something is happening, but perhaps something that will alert an aware person that the event is in play.
Still here, even after all this time!
I do believe the troll attacks add a HUGE measure of coolness to Skyway, which I had always looked at as a pretty lackluster zone. The chance of all hell breaking loose at any moment? Very nice.
It seems everytime I zone into Steel a fire has just been put out. But other than that, great new events and great new badges for them!

I know we're supposed to bring our own thing to the table, but hey, I really have nothing negative to say here so why post... er...
Anyways. I thought the Supa Trolls running off into Skyway was the point. They need to be stopped to keep them from endangering the lowest-level players (and the civilians) in the area. Unlike other events (Lusca most importantly; Paladin for the most part as he usually gets destroyed before being built) which can simply be passed by when they happen, the Rave seems to be designed as an aggressive event.
Which is great. Wonderful. I'd love to see more of this, but I believe it's going to get tough outside of the two SCs, because at the higher levels, a single level difference seems to mean much more (to me anyways) than in the pre-20s.

I LOVE the fire event! It is exactly what City of Heroes needs: more chances to be a hero that don't just boil down to street sweeping, gophering from contact to contact and solving everything with a fist. I've even grown to like the fact that you can fail and get blown up, although I fear it might cause people to ignore the fires if they think they may get debted.
My suggestions:
- Add the event to Kings Row too. A slummy area like that is just asking for arson crimes.
- Maybe add a part where you go -into- the building and put out the fires inside, rescuing people trapped by flames.
- Make it possible for the skyscrapers to catch fire too! I'd love to be fifty stories up, fighting the flames burning from the top of the city.
The frequency for the events needs to be turned up on the test server. It's hard to give feedback when nobody can take part in them.
I second the call for fast event spawns on Test.
Also, I also second that in particular, the Troll Rave needs a more obvious way to detect its presence.
In Steel, you can tell which buildings are "marked for death" and when they are burning, the amount of smoke makes it VERY obvious.
However, glow-in-the-dark Trolls in some back alley of Skyway are very hard to spot and very non-obvious (which is the exact opposite I'd expect from Trolls, hm?).
One suggestion to fix this would be to have some set rave locations that otherwise would be marked by spilled puddles of Superadyne. In other words, make the rave locations be static and clearly glow-in-the-dark!
To have Trolls randomly wandering from warehouse to warehouse in the shady back alleys of Skyway doesn't set right with me. Trolls are more likely to establish "bases" and usually make their actions VERY obvious.
Never surrender! Never give up!
Help keep Paragon City alive with the unofficial City of Heroes Tabletop Role Playing Game!
I have only one question... are these permanent zone events or just for the issue?
Totally agree. The events need to happen with greater frequency. THis is something the game badly needs, a little more rambunctiousness!
I like the Sky Scraper idea, even if only heros who fly could use it.
The fire is fantastic, but badly needs a definite ending to it. The fire chief talks a lot when you're fighting, but never says thankyou, and nor do the citizens!
One thing that would make it a bit better - mix up the textures on the buildings that will burn - They stand out to much - like those old cartoons where you could tell what part of the cliff would fall off because it was a different color.
They look "dropped in" from quite a ways
Police officer: 'Have you any idea how fast you were going back there?'
Werner Heisenberg: 'Nope, but I knew exactly where I was!'
Firefighting, VERY VERY fun event to participate in! A little disappointed that the firechief doesn't say thank you or anything after you put out the fire nor civilians.
Would be REALLY great if fires could start on top of skyscrapers, so that way if heroes have a difficult time climbing up they can work together with someone with group fly or group teleport in order to put out fires.
Not a big fan of having to go back down to refill my fire extinguisher though, feels like a waste of time to me when I could be fighting these crazy fires.
Oh and I also believe the civilians should be yelling on broadcast, FIRE! FIRE! PLEASE SOMEONE HELP US!
As for the trolls? Eh, kind of hard to run into them as Skyway City is such a huge zone you really don't know when they're going to strike or whatever so not much feedback I can give on this.
"They need to happen slightly more often (says the person that still don't have Babbage on my character I've played over a year) and players need more aware of them when they are happening. Maybe not quite a broadcast in the Zone that something is happening, but perhaps something that will alert an aware person that the event is in play."
To build upon this idea, perhaps NPCs could help clue people in as part of the above idea. Such as, someone screaming "I hear there's a fire in X part of the city. I hope it's contained! I mean, could you imagine if it spread to the other buildings! Someone should do something!"
or...
"I feel a disturbance in the force..." Ok maybe not that one.
"I feel that a rift has opened between the land of the living and the dead. There has to be something creating this rift somewhere nearby..."
"My Dad just returned from his fishing trip, and apparently there was nothing in the water, no wildlife, nothing. It was dead calm. Then he had this 'feeling' that he gets sometimes, so he got the hell out of dodge. I wonder what could be in that water?"
etc.
This would help greatly in determining whether it's even worthwhile to start checking the zone out for its special occurance, and would go far to help the game with its living world 'feel' imo.

I love the new events the Supa Trolls are sweet and crazy lookin. I love the new events. The fire fighter one is alot of fun you should though make the buildings a little less noticable. Unless you did that so it wouldnt be too hard for people to find them. Other than that the fire one is fun. Also are you going to allow us to attack the fire with our regular attacks on live or is this a bug?
Yes finally something fun for my controller to do in his spare time.

hahaha.
-zone events are amusing, and i wish they were more random. even if the same events kept happening sparatically at random times each month or week.

If you guys can set "random" spawns beyond the "random" spawns, it would be awesome. Maybe, the Dev team decides that on Tuesday this week, on all servers, at 10am, 1pm, 4pm, 7pm, and so on...
Level 15 Devouring Earth monsters spawn in one of the Steel Canyon lakes and start doing laps around town, attacking all dumb heroes in their path. Why are they attacking?
What else have the DE to do but wipe out the plague of humanity? Why do monsters attack out of the blue in Marvel's NYC or in Metropolis in DC? Because the city is there!
Or, there comes the swarms of zombies (Level 32-35 Vazhilok cadavers, labeled "Zombies", herds of 15+ in size) in Brickstown one Saturday night, a couple of times per hour. Why? Industrial accident by the Zigguratt. Poor workers. Poor locals and 2nd shift employees. Oops, don't get bit. Why is it happening? Who cares! It's a comic book.
Level 45 Rikti start porting in all Portal Court one night.. Bobcat and Nightstar step out of one of the Portal Corp doors one night into the court, having fought their way through to our world for some payback. Why? It's a comic book!
"Random" stuff like this, would completely break up the normal flow of things and VERY quickly put players on their toes. Lusca is scaring dock works in IP again? No, what? She's at the PI ferry? And level 48?! Or she's climbing up on the beach in Talos? Oh no!
Malta in Atlas Park? Carnies in the Hollows?! Winter Lords fighting giant Pumpkin Men in Croatia (Monster Fights, c'mon, how cool would that be?)?! Has the world gone mad?
No--but the players will be hyper-giddy and having a blast, as long as 1) it's very regular, but diverse. 2) It's not *too* overpowering--I personallly love Rularuu, but the high level stuff with them back in the day with even cons was nuts.
Bonus points, the Devs can re-use their huge existing stock of characters/villains. Relabel, relevel, and retask. Think of it like a good rapper remixing some classic tracks. With monster fights, of course.
I'v only seen heros put out fire and it looked like fun. So far I didn't have the luck to either fight a fire myself not fight the Trolls.
So first point is: increase the spawning rate! Not only on Test, also on Live. After all, there are 2 Rave and 3 Fire badges this time.
The burning building was indeed very well visible with all the smoke. Lusca can be seen from afar, the Ghost Ship glows greenish from miles away. But I can imagine that the Trolls are hard to find, so my suggestion is that you add what we already suggested for the Hellion rave mission back in beta: music! What better way to announce the rave event than looping techno music in a certain radius, interrupted by the gunshots of the police? (I don't know if it's already in, but knowing you Cryptic guys, it isn't. )
Poison Sabbath
I was lucky enough to chance upon a burning building ( ) and took part in the mayhem.
Overall, a very nifty event.
My suggestions:
* At the end of the event, I was left with a "uhhh are we done?" feeling. I had been flying around the building, taking out Helions, and spraying the fires. I kept circling the building a couple of times without seeing any fires and then had to ask through broadcast if we were done; I got replies of "I think so....". Would be nice if there was a cue that we were sucessful. I was thinking of an audio cue to play for those near the building along the lines of the sound of people cheering. Would let everyone know that we accomplished our heroic duties on a high note. I hear the building explodes if we are not sucessful; that's a cue that we lost.
* When you first click on the Fire Chief, you get a Temp Power....but there is no clue of what to do. Yes, it's quite obvious what to do, but not everyone understood what to do with it at the fire scene I was at. Would be nice that when you click on the Fire Chief, he gives a text bubble quickly describing what to do. This is better than a pop up window because it retains the function of a tutorial, but without an annoying pop up that you'd have to click away, especially when you are experienced with the whole event.
* While nifty looking, the smoke effects were a big lag fest (at least on Test). Once the fire was out and all was left was the smoldering building, a closer inspection of the building was like being in a Hami raid (RIP ). I'm sure it wouldn't be as bad on Live, but is there anyway to lessen the graphical load of the smoke/smoldering building?
* Also, the smoldering building can be seen from quite the distance. One person said he could see the far building near the green line from the yellow line. When a building is on fire, the draw distance is much less. Can a building on fire be more visible from a further distance? Or can there be a zone-only indication that there is a fire in progress? My graphic settings are turned very high so I don't think I could make it easier to see.
* Since this was my first fire scene, I do not know how others work. The building stayed smoldering for at least 20 minutes; at this time I had to log off. I heard others say the last building they saw stayed smoldering for only 10 minutes. Is the amount of time for the smoldering building related to the spawn of the next event?
* As with all events and monster spawns, I'd really like to see them a little more often. Lusca and the Ghost ship seem to be just right, almost to the notion of too much But I doubt anyone would ever say events spawned too often. For the last couple of weeks, it appears that other monster spawns were bumped up? I hope the spawn occurrences were bumped up, and I hope they remain the way they are, including the ones coming from I5.
I've already forgotten about most of you
* Steel Canyon: The Hellions are living up to their name and have taken to arson.
* Skyway City: The Trolls start a Rave (Troll-style) when they find a new supply of Superadine.
