"The Surviving Eight"

There are various examples in the comics of substances (gold kryptonite) or artifacts (ROM's Neutralizer and the weapon that Forge reverse-engineered from it) that can somehow alter an innately-powered hero to temporarily or permanently remove their "super" abilities while leaving them otherwise unharmed. Such items are obviously beyond the purview of the regular game (imagine making it to level 46, being hit by a Sapper, and told "you have lost your powers - game over.")

[/ QUOTE ]

Cripes you're old school.

Welcome to the post-Crisis universe. It's strictly red kryptonite that takes away your powers, and that's not around anymore.

Welcome to the post-Crisis universe.

More like post-Crisis, post-Byrne, post-Death-of-Superman, post-Energy-Superman, post-Zero-Hour, etc etc. And now I hear they're gearing up for another Crisis? Things were so much simpler when they could count on 100% reader turnover every ten years.

[/ QUOTE ]

Actually, red kryptonite has random effects ... i.e., whatever wacky thing Mort Weisinger wanted to happen to the Man of Steel this month. And no one will convince me otherwise.

(Red K does not, however, contain tar.)

one hero, the utterly invulnerable Ajax, managed to survive the blast. He had been taken captive by a Rikti stasis ray and rendered unable to follow his teammates into the portal. Now he was the sole surviving witness to their apparent victory.

[/ QUOTE ]

So he's a tough guy in the backstory? How come he's such a putz in the comic?

Actually, red kryptonite still exists, but it has to be created by a 5th Dimensional Imp. Batman, somehow, wound up with one and de-randomized its effect (again... somehow) so that it would make Superman's skin transluscent forcing him to absorb more solar energy than he could possibly need.

Because Ajax and Apex are two different characters...

Who exactly ARE the surviving eight, and why are they CALLED the surviving eight?

[/ QUOTE ]

Greetings,
The Surviving Eight are: Statesman, Positron, Synapse, Sister Psyche, Citadel, Manticore, Numina and Back Alley Brawler. They all agreed to remain in Paragon City after the Rikti War, to coordinate the efforts of the new heroes arriving every day.
Ms. Liberty is in fact Statesman's Sidekick but she leads a group of heroes herself. They are called the Vindicators: Minx, Valkyrie, Swan, Infernal, Luminary and most recently Aurora Borealis.

Cheers.

Ah. But... Liberty's still a member of the Freedom Phalanx, right? And I s'pose that answers the "does surviving mean they actually lived?" question.

EDIT: I guess that also answers the "what happens to that (insert explitive here) Malaise?" question?

Oooh. Nice information. I really wish this stuff permeated into the game. I know the story is geared to be stories for our heroes, but I think world characters and their backstory should be in the CoH bible somewhere and be heavily alluded to in future content if possible.

All I can say is poor poor Infernal, I must take them 2 hours to figure out which outfits they want to fight crime in that night. And the bickering good Lord the bickering. Pray for Infernal.

Infernal is the only male in the Vindicators? =0_o=

Bow-chika-wow-wow

Good to know this, too. I wasn't aware that Ms. Liberty was State's sidekick.

Now would it be too much to ask if the Hero Trainers could all have a "tell me about this hero" options, so we can read their backstories?

Even though I recently did the Numa Numa TF ( ), I really don't know much about the Woodsman, other than what the DE did to him, and his present condition.

Now that the trainers are getting expanded menus (on Test), it might be nice if a "what about this contact?" entry was one of the new choices....

Thanks for the "Who", but now for the bigger question: the WHY. WHY are they called The Surviving eight?

Posted

As was said before, they're the 8 surviving members of Freedom Phalanx.

Posted

My response would be to all this is: Where are the Plaques and Monuments to the dead soldiers who gave their lives in the name of the planet? I know the surviving 8 were for us heroes but what about the true heroes who died? And how many?

As was said before, of the 1,000 members of Freedom Phalanx, only 800 died. That leaves 200, not 8.

Well, Galaxy Girl is one hero who died in the Rikti War. Got a whole zone named after her, too.

I believe there are a few others that mention heroes that died during that time, but I can't think of them offhand.

As far as why the surviving members of the Freedom Phalanx are called the "Surviving Eight" instead of the "Surviving Two Hundred"?

Cause the devs nerfed SGs down to only 75 members, and nobody wanted to team with these 8, since they are all notorious PLers.

What? You think they're training people? Oh no, they're training you, but they're annoying other people.

Backstreet Brawler: D00d, u got inf? PL plz. any1 got WW?

I believe you've misread the information provided by the website. This is the paragraph, correct?

[ QUOTE ]
Matters were growing more desperate with each passing month, so the Vanguard, led by Hero 1 in November 2002, decided to try Dr. Science's daring plan. They assembled the best and brightest heroes in the world, leaving only skeleton crews to man the defenses. They then split into two teams, one led by the Statesman, named Alpha Team, and one led by Hero 1, named Omega Team. Alpha Team was much larger, consisting of over 1000 heroes from across the globe. They launched a full frontal assault on the Rikti main troop concentrations, drawing as many alien troops into the fray as possible. This was a dangerous ploy, and it proved costly. In the ensuing titanic battle, 800 of 1000 heroes died, along with some 50,000 Rikti soldiers.

[/ QUOTE ]

However, you missed this bit of information, a couple of paragraphs ahead:

[ QUOTE ]
The Freedom Phalanx was down to just Statesman and a handful of the toughest, most powerful heroes in the city. The Dawn Patrol, Midnight Squad, Regulators, and Hero Corps were in similar straits. With its decentralized command structure and international recruiting base, only the Vanguard (which included Statesman as well), remained a viable, organized fighting force. Even when the Rikti destroyed the United Nations buildings in New York and Geneva, the Vanguard kept up the fight, quickly training and organizing super powered defense teams to hold the aliens in check.

That wasn't the Freedom Phalanx, that was a group of heroes designated as Alpha Team.
