I doubt States will give an explanation for what I'm gonna ask but why did you put some of the skills info in the Issue 3 pigg files when yet its gonna not be here for 2 more Updates?

Bleh, I guess that's why Issue 4 will be out "sooner than we think." I just hope they start leaking stuff about the Skill System out soon. We've been patiently waiting for a long time.

WOOHOO!!!!!!

YES!!!!!!

Thats what I've been waiting for!

After reaching level 50 with my scrapper, I've tried making new characters, but can't really get into it. Releveling, reexploring, rebadge collecting, same missions over again. I just can't get into it. I love my lvl 50 scrapper, that's the hero I wanted since I saw those first tidbits of what kind of powers there will be in CoH.

I designed my toon for pvp, I consider AI practice in sharpening my pvp skills. I plan to be a full time pvper, spending time pveing only when a SG friend needs help with a mission.

Now that I've got level 50, there isn't really much left to do except kill the same mobs over and over. I mean killing AI has been funner in this game than any other MMORG I've played, but when it comes right down to it, I play MMORGs to fight other players, not AI. I fight AI to level, but I fight players for fun. That's my personal philosophy. Reader, u might think repetitive pve is fun, but I don't. It's fun the 1st time, and goes down hill from there till its just boring.

CoV for me is the only reason I'm gona keep playing this game, I mean I love the game, but without pvp, I'd just get too bored with it. Of the 40 some games on my shelf, the only ones I still play are the ones I haven't beat and the ones that involve pvp.

I been inactive in the game for a couple weeks now, kinda getting bored, but States, your quote above has got me fired up. Don't listen to those content crybabies, issue 4 needs pvp. The arena is what the powergamer/pvp crowd needs to keep their interest in this awsome game.

My advice to the content crowd who were bashing States' quote above: Get level 50, enjoy the content of getting level 50. Make a kheldian, enjoy that content up to level 50. By the time you've got both to level 50, and enjoyed all the content in the game, issue 5 will be here with the SSOCS or whatever its called, which by the way, I care nothing about unless it can be used for pvp.

Heh heh. Issue 5 will be out probably long before I get my main to 50 (I'm level 36 now). I'm enjoying the content too much to level quickly.

I'm not bashing Statesman for the delay. I can wait. It was just a bit of a disappointment, since we were under the impression that SSOCS was coming out very soon. I'm glad the PvP crowd will be getting the arenas in Issue 4.

Hopefully all the arena tweaking won't delay SSOCS longer. I suspect the devs will be awfully busy adjusting the PvP versions of the powers to get them balanced properly.

I imagine like every part of the development of this game. PvP has an entirely seperate team to develop it and won't detract from any other development time.

personally PvP is an inexaustable supply of high end content....you fight npcs...learn a tactic against them,, they do the same thing over and over...it just gets boring. Against real players you can develop more complex tactics, and will need to, because the other players will think far better and sneakier than anything any AI can produce.

Playing against another player is just about always different. No-one buys beat em ups to play them on their own, at least not for any great length of time, the online scene is designed to play with and against other people. otherwise it'd be an offline game with downloadable patches for content updates. I try and try not to come back to the whole "it's an online multiplayer game" arguement but every time i try and offer up something to the solo and storyline based community, it just seems to feel like it's in a wasted genre.

Like we should create an entirely different genre for that type of game. Because everytime a new MMO comes out, the reaction is the same, people want more solo content, people want more pvp content etc etc. And in all fairness it's just about business suicide to create a game entirely devoted to one of these genres.

I mean i think the skills system is an exciting addition, but it can wait for me. I was never a fan of crafting, i hate relying on weapons in a game, it's a constant battle that numbs my brain trying to have the best weapon and the best armour. The fact that all i have to do is decide how effective i want to be and develop my character accordingly is what i love abotu Coh. I like that i dont have to rely on a lucky drop or a random spawn to gain an advantage over people, i play to compete, to socialise and to enjoy. Not to sit whiling my time away doing crafting type things.

yeah the SSOCS is supposedly non-monotonous-puke-inducing mouse click grinding and i have no doubt that it will involve heavilly in the game. if you ask me skills will be more to do with PvP than you think. The very categories of skill throw a whole host of ideas up in my head about how they would be useful to storm bases and capture artefacts etc. thats why i think SSOCS has been put back, because it more closely ties in with CoV.

Plus the devs know that even the people that said they weren't interested in PvP will still play regardless. Just like the doomsayers and 'i quit' spammers. and as i said above PvP is a far more substantial aspect of content that is unlikely to be exausted quickly. People are still finding new ways to beat the NPCs imagine how long it'll take to exaust ideas against real thinking imaginative people. good call on the devs if ya ask me.

still...SSOCS prolly shouldn't have leaked so early if it's not right for it to go in yet...the SSOCS ifo has been circulating for months and months now. but then maybe thats part of the plan, keeps people interested and awaiting something big. Lets face it after pvp and SSOCS what else has been announced that people are waiting for? CoV is about all i can think of, maybe a few new powersets and ATs. i'm sure there's plenty waiting in the wings but it's not out in the open yet. Let's waiting and see. the way i look at it, once pvp is in, there is gonna have to be some more rumour mongering so that there's something else for people to look forward to

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I was really looking forward to skills, Oh well. I would feel a lot better if, say, customizable weapons would end up in I4.

Posted

oh yeah that'd be cool. forgot about the custom weapons thing. prolly down to my fear of weapons or sommin lol. Only thing is...the majority of powersets don't use weapons, and the colour of energy and other non weapon-based is hardly much customisation compared to what is likely to be available to weapons heroes. in fact only scrappers and tankers would benefit from this if you don't count assault rifle blasters.

Still be cool to see people runnin about with different weapons...rock on!

I'm not really into PvP. I can't say anything that anyone else hasn't said about it before. I'll probably only face off against good friends.

I've never been into crafting either. So the jury is out on the skill system for me. It does sound very cool. I will be giving it a try.

I am into creating new heroes- for me that is a major part of the fun. Creating a character concept, creating a costume, creating a bio. To me that is fun. I usually hit 14ish and do it all over again. Obviously, I haven't hit 50 and I've been playing since release day. I am proud to say that I am closing in on 37.

It's the custom weapons, new costume options, new powersets and new AT's that I'm excited about.

States, could you give us 'fluff fans' a hint of something other than PvP that's being introduced in Issue 4?

You know, just to throw this out there - I had a whole mess of crepes this morning. They're just like pancakes, maybe even better.

Boo! And no, I am not saying Boo-rns. Unless Issue 4 is coming out this month, early early next month, or the skill set makes me wet my pants, I feel this is a poor choice. Lots of people might want PvP, but they were completely under the impression they'd have to wait until CoV. We were expecting skill-related content negitive one month ago.

For the love of Petey Williams, how long must we wait?

....

No.

I've been unhappy with the one-note gameplay (even if it is a pretty good note), and I've stuck around since I2 waiting for the long promised skills system, on the premise it would give the game the non-combat activities, (i my mind, the depth) that I felt was lacking.

... I'm seriously considering cancelling my account over this.

Didn't they get "Pushed back to Issue 4" from Issue 3 already? Really, some of these things are getting pretty bothersome. Same thing has been happening with Global chat for the past 2 issues. There are some pretty amazing things that are going to revolutionize the game out there, but we keep getting them pushed back. Been here since beta, and I've always heard that "You can't compare the content in this game to other games, because we just came out. Wait a year, then you'll see that it's a completely different" game. Well guess what? We are coming upon our 1 year anniversary, and we still don't have our promised Gameplay additions. Arenas don't cut it. They are great, but they don't add alternatives to combat, they just vary the combat a little bit. I absolutely love this game, but it gets rather repetitive after a while. Mission changes, new zones, new trials, they are all great. I love them. But they don't add the variety to the game that is missing. Is there a chance that you guys can up the number of programmers working on Updates? These delays are losing you customers, and us potential teammates. Partially, this is thanks to all the new games. But the reality is that if delays and empty promises become the norm here, some of these people won't be returning. I love this game, but there is only so long that I can keep grinding. It's been nearly a year now, and I think we deserve something new by this point. This is a serious hit to my excitement if your telling us it's going to be 3 1/2 months before we get to start testing these skills. I'm saddened.

I think its funny someone would cancel their account because a feature was pushed back another month or two. I say, go ahead and cancel it, less lag on the servers.

Three months on top of the two-three it will take for Issue 4 to be released? It'll probably be July by the time Issue 5 comes out. That's $75 dollars in subscription money that could be taken somewhere besides a game that isn't being entertaining.

I seem to recall hearing something w/power customazation was going in... don't hink it was full custom, but a few options a least. Could be wrong though. Atmittedly, I have nver heard him soon anything on that, so don't hold me to it.

Odd, the first time I recall hearing about CoV I recall hearing mention of putting out the areanas beforehand to allow limited PVP.

That is true. It could be that they're pushing out the arenas because CoV is not too far off.

I am, however, still disappointed. Arenas and pvp in general are for a niche market. They are for a much smaller segment of players than the skills system would be. Many MMOs choose to limit pvp to just a single server or two, and those servers tend to not be the most popular. I'm all for adding it, and I most likely will play in it once or twice, but for the long haul, it's definitely not that important to me. It doesn't change the game, and so far nothing has.

Ive got a feeling that issue 4 isnt going to be the "OMG THE WORLD IS EXPLODING" update we're used to.

At best, I imagine issue 4 will feel like padding for the issue 5 rush. Something to "tide us over" from the long time it took for issue 3.

My guess, in the next 2 to 3 weeks we'll be hearing more info about issue 4, issue 4 will hit test in mid-February, and will hit live in late Feb, early March. 3 to 4 weeks later, we'll start hearing about issue 5, issue 5 will have alot of content in it, and will take about as long to get in as Issue 3 did. Which will sort of set a precedent for the future. Big update, little update, Big update, little update. 3 month cycle, 1 month cycle, 3 month cycle, 1 month cycle.

It wont be all that bad really, as long as we dont go haywire because we arent getting everything right now.

I think the Big update, little update system could turn out really well. We get our big things in big doses with a few little things to keep us occupied while they work on the really big cool new toys and systems for us to use.

Anyways, just my 2 cents.

Since I know you've said you generally work several Issues ahead of what is coming up next, in the spirit of promoting even better communication, could you give us an overview a few ahead? (I'm mainly talking about features that the playerbase already knows you intend to put in, but you could also toss in hints to what else is coming if you wanted ).

I mean, I know that any such list will get more nebulous, less confident, and less reliable as an estimate the further you get from the present, and I know the playerbase would instantly try to convince you that their favorite feature is more crucial than something that comes earlier, and that things will inevitably shift around as plans become more concrete. It might help people see the bigger picture of where the game is going and get a rough idea of when to expect it, though.

Then, as new things are revealed, new Issues come out, and things get shuffled around, you could release a new version of the list. Say, once or twice per issue.

I'm thinking of something like this (containing a few upcoming things I remember and a few that I made up from whole cloth, in a completely speculative order):

Pre-issue 4:
Short-range changes from boss difficulty feedback
Fix Special cape not available on female models
More Tanker changes

Issue 4: Colosseum
PVP Arenas
A bunch of new costume options (we got one cape early)
Adding flavor to old zones: Kings Row, Atlas Park, Galaxy City

Issue 5: An Invitation in Writing
SSOCS
The Seaview Project
Sonics powerset
Adding flavor to old zones: Skyway city, Steel Canyon, Talos Island.
New body types: Teen and Massive
Mid-range changes from Boss Difficulty feedback (?)
New Archetype: Coralax
New enemies: Aquatic Race
The Clockwork Palace (custom art for Psychic Clockwork king dimension/mission)

Issue 6: ?
Archery Powerset
Long-range changes (mission UI, etc.) from boss difficulty feedback (?)
Personal Archvillains
New zone: Beacon One (space zone)
New fabric costume options (trenchcoats, hair, etc.)
New Trial zone: The Junkyard (a new trial zone built on the ruins of Baumton International airport, basically a nascent Clockwork Palace, infested by clocks)
New enemies: Various new types of clockwork, space enemies

City of Villains (stuff relevant to CoH):
Supergroup Bases
Minions
PVP Zones

Issue 7: ?
Pistols powerset
Rope travel pool (tenative)
New body type: Quadraped
New Archetype: Incarnate
Additional powers for Power Pools (teleport anywhere on zone map, etc.)
New secret zone for level range x
New secret zone for level range y
Custom Powers (effect colors and models)

And you can even prepend the list with 100 copies of "There are no promises in this list! Rough estimates of intended features and order only!", just to drive the point home.

I know you like to surprise us, but a lot of this stuff we already know, and I'm willing to sacrifice a certain amount of surprise on the rest in order to have a somewhat clearer picture of where things are heading and in roughly what order.

The point, and the reason why I mention this here (other than your post giving me the idea) is because doing this on a regular schedule would keep us up to date on changes like moving the SSOCS back, and there would be one place we could go to for the summary on longish-term development plans (instead of having to cull it from a myriad of posts).

I'm not holding my breath this'll happen, mind you.
