  1. Haha.

I was thinking earlier today of how many times something changed in the game that I didn't like and I threatened to leave.

(start montage to "Take these Broken Wings")
  2. I periodically come to the City of Heroes site, mainly out of habit. What do I see? A new message dated September 18?

    SONUVA!

    It's about refunds...

This is like when you break up and then you see a message or text on your phone. Hope maybe? No. "I left a box outside with your socks, mouthwash, and two of your books on the porch."

    ** sigh **

    DFB and contacts

Funny. DFB brought me back to the game permanently during a double XP weekend after not playing for over a year (along with the new/earlier travel powers). It's a dual-edged sword and for experienced players tired of hovering around The Hollows for hours just testing out a new AT it was a welcomed QoL change. I see the cons of it, too. But I'm generally not shy about helping people out early on if I find out they're new. Most of my active "friends" are just people new to CoH.

Is there a way to fiddle with the custom colors to have Fire without the character using fire? By changing the colors of water to brown I was able to create a "sand" blasting character and don't even see myself as a water blaster.

Notice I make no mention of difficulty in that statement, as difficulty really does not have as much bearing on whether or not people play something. Farmville, for example, is a game I would consider "easy" but has nevertheless acquired much attention, primarily because it requires an engaging amount of user input.

If you've heard the term "I Win Button" that's basically what is being applied in describing how bonfire works with this IO. While you may enjoy the instant gratification that results from pressing the "I Win Button" the first couple hundred of times, you are eventually going to get bored of it as an intelligent human being who needs to be mentally engaged. Unless you are just incredibly simple, which I very much doubt.

That being said, I haven't actually seen Bonfire in action to determine if I think it is "overpowered" or not, which is why I say I agree with Reppu's sentiment. We may not always like to admit it, but keeping balance in check is important regardless of whether or not you are immediately aware of why.
While I completely, 100% agree with the heart of what you're saying, the big part that's missing here is choice/accountability. People made this arguement for anything that could be considered an exploit in the game. Like complaining that an AE farm map made the game too boring... when there was 99.9% more content beyond that. So we make "input" to either A) protect us from ourselves or B) to ensure that others enjoy the game in the way you think they should.

There was a time when I was more inclined to agree with this kind of thinking but from experience I have never played in a time of a so-called exploit where the majority of players took the "I win button" powerset/power or could not find a team outside of an "exploitable" farm. If you took the time to recall the most exploited "game-breaking" mechanic in this game, I bet you a far smaller percentage of people were using it than whiners made it out to be.

So why critic them for being "unrealistic"? Every major or minor hero and villain in the comic book industry has at least a small element of the unbelivable ingrained withen them. All of them were created to make money, as well as make young men and women say "That's cool!"

As for Superman's level of power? At first it was out of hand but now he's not even that powerful in the expansive universe he inhabits. He's just the best Earth has. His role now in the comics and in the "real world" isn't even about how powerful he is but who he is. In his world he is a symbol, a man that is meant to inspire humanity to better themselves and to strive for a better world. To an extent in the DC universe you can say he already accomplished this with the arrival of the heroic age he kickstarted, and we know he will have truley acomplished that goal far into DC's in universe future as they show the world he helped make Earth thousands of years from now. The same could be said that he is also this very same thing for those that read him growing up. He's a Symbol, and an ideal his fans my strive for and in doing so they make their small part ofthe world a better place. Nothing could be better.

Saying all this I leave you with proof that this film "got it". They know that's who and what Superman is now.

So right on. Superman's powers isn't what makes him Superman. The real story is who he is.

And I agree: since when did fictional stories, especially fantasy had to adhere to physical laws? A writer/artist is the god of his universe and imagination is a far more powerful force to communicate a message or story than laws of physics. To each his or her own, though. I'm just way more interested in a good story than nitpicking things that don't matter.

This isn't a conspiracy by jealous players to take something away from other players. That characterization is what we have been arguing against from the start of the thread.

The idea that players who think a power should be nerfed are traitors is just foolish. I'm sorry if that sounds harsh, but IMO its a lot less harsh than calling other other players enemies of some broad cause.
If the thread was ONLY about Seeds of Confusion being overpowered it would be a different story. This starts off as crying about how he or she feels the tier 9 of the toon they're playing isn't as good as the tier 5 of someone else's character. Wah. And what's foolish is isolating one power out of a set and comparing it to another one-for-one and saying that it's broken. You have to take the whole set into consideration and what the strength of the set actually is. If we want to do that: fine. But as it stands, the motivation behind this sounds petty. It's like how people whined about Burn was so oh-my-God overpowered. Not considering anything else about the Fiery Aura set. The only people affected? Those who played Fiery Aura; not the complainers who played other sets. (And for the record, I don't have a main FA tanker or brute). I was glad that they came around to show that players' ******** isn't always a legitimate claim. Here's hoping you get everything you want; the end of eight horrible years of playing Mind Control just toiling away never having any fun suddenly will come to an end when they change Seeds of Confusion.
  10. Wow. Nothing changes after eight years. While I have my own opinions about Mind vs. Plant, I think it's less relevant than the even bigger question: how the hell is a change to one power from one set going to affect your enjoyment of playing another? People act as if they were born as their chosen character and take some offense that someone else chose something that they don't have. You want Seeds so bad, roll a PLANT Dominator! But demanding changes to another set is not going to change how yours plays. Period.

I play a ton of characters including my very first "main" character which is Mind/Kin. From the very first issue I had to deal with people complaining about confuse stealing their precious XP. It was a hard-fought war but overtime people saw the value in it (although it was only one tiny power in a vast arsenal). Issues later I played Plant/Thorns mainly because it was so new. Same thing: people hated Seeds. Now it's come full circle and people want it nerfed. The thing is, my 50+3 Plant Dom is no more fun than my Mind Controller. Actually, I enjoy Mind a lot more but it's personal choice!

While you're playing your character in your PUG on some random server in some random time zone, there is a player who has maxed out some AT killing things at a fantastic rate probably repeating some mind-numbing farm and if you're having fun, you are none the wiser. A change to his toon is not going to alter your experience one bit. And you know what? If you think you're going to have more fun clicking Seeds and Roots all day, you have more character slots than you know what to do with... knock yourself out.

I actually went for the Agility as well looking for added defense. To be honest, I don't see damage being a problem at all with the ninjas, it's always the defense. But, in hindsight, now that I have Barrier, I think I should have gone a different route with the alpha slot, so musc would have been the right choice. With Barrier and all other FF's up....they are untouchable! Finally!

I wish I knew the incarnates more, because I was planning ahead for either lore or something else, and there is an AoE heal there, but it's conflicting with something else that I want/need. I'll have to pose the question when i get home.

  12. At work again so I can't post my current build (this is when I have the most time to read forums )

The Mastermind in question is Necro/Dark. My initial thought was to pursue high defense at the expense of everything else since most of my damage is neg energy. Recharge is the usual go to and I've considered what exactly that would affect; never crossed my mind to keep replenishing pets.

I've been staring at the list of enhancements and respective set bonuses all day hoping I'd see something that would stand out based on the accepted IOs but I think I'm just going to default to my usual +Def/+Rech. I'm an admitted set bonus hoor so only for a handful of powers do I consider Frankenslotting (I just love looking at the bonuses in my description while waiting for a trial to que.)

Thanks for the reply and the ideas. Back to staring at the Invention Origin Enhancement Sets page!
  13. So what bonuses should be pursued for a Mastermind, or maybe, are ideal? +Damage doesn't seem like a very quality attribute since attacks are performed through the henchmen.

I understand the IO's for pets but I'm speaking specifically of set bonuses. While I imagine that things like +Defense would only affect the caster I imagined there might be a possibility that something like +Health could affect pets since they kind of are a part of your health (and damage). It makes sense that it would only affect [me] but the idea only popped into my head when I saw so many bonus that are traditionally for Masterminds (although they aren't the only ones with pets) revolve more around Damage and Health.

It was a longshot but I figured I'd ask.

    thanks for the response.
  14. And while I'm at it: +Damage. I'm planning of giving my lone lvl 50 MM some love this week and trying to plan out his IO build. Traditionally I have pursued +def and +rech on different characters but the MM is so different than the other characters I play, I need to put better thought into it.

The reason +Health and +Damage even piqued my interest is because I was only just now reminded that the purple IO is completely different in set bonuses for pet damage so there must be some benefit for +Health/+Damage appropriate for a MM and more usefull than +Acc/+Rech/+Recovery.
  15. Goons

Not sure why this wasn't one of the originals. When I think of classic Masterminds from, say, Batman TV show, they all had hired goons to do their work.

Honestly, if I had a wish for Masterminds, instead of a new primary set I'd love customizable henchmen or at least a customizable selection of each type of henchmen. Not sure how difficult that would be but if I could just wish something into existence it would be that. Especially with the Mecha costumes coming out; I'd probably play Robots finally.
  16. I always think of this at work and forget to check when I'm home: does the +Health set bonus affect Mastermind pets or only the toon? These are hit points, right?

    Thanks
  17. Nice, I came here for the exact same questions.

I'm trying not to go Reactive mainly because I always choose it and because on teams it loses effect. I am testing Degenerative on one character but I haven't soloed with him and I can't tell how well it's working.

So my question would be this: is it worth it to just make the investment in taking two or three interfaces and swap them out based on situation? I have a katana/SR scrapper and thought maybe Diamagnetic would be good against Elite Bosses and higher but Reactive or Degenerative might be better on regular missions with bosses.
  18. I dusted off one of my old Controllers that I used to love on teams as I took powers that would maximize control and support over damage. However, as the game has evolved I felt like that was not a useful approach so I started over slotting for damage instead of control. My question now is about strategy: how do I maximize containment with Mind since the primary soft control is sleep?

Right now I've been trying to get into a routine of Mass Hypnosis > Fulcrum Shift > Terrorize > Psychic Tornado and then repeat. While Mass Hypnosis comes up really fast giving me a safe followup containment-boosted Terrorize, the Psychic Tornado doesn't get the benefit (unless I alternate MH > Terr > MH > Tornado)

    Any tips?

Oh, and I'm not necessarily as concerned about the build/enhancements as much as attack chain/approach. I feel like Mind Control is right there as far as soloing but there has to be an optimal way to make it work.

    Incarnate trials

Thank you for all the advice! I'll start sorting through them this afternoon. In the meantime, I've been all the new powersets while taking breaks sifting through the forums trying to figure out these incarnate trials (which seem so straight-forward on paper).

I'll report back with my experience.

    Thanks again,

    Incarnate trials

I've been out of CoX for a few years and decided to come back a few months ago. A lot has changed and one of the big ones is the Incarnate system. I had so many level 50 characters I eventually started deleting some to make room for new alts but now, they have a purpose.

So I queued myself for the first available trial after I unlocked my Alpha slot. I didn't know what to expect but it wasn't like a normal Task Force or mission. Only problem is that it seemed everyone knew what they were doing except me and questions in the game were generally ignored.

Question: where can I go to find out about the trials themselves? What expectations/objectives are, best tips on how to complete them and how long they usually take. The actual objectives are well documented within the trial, yes, but like I said, when we enter, people just take off completing objectives efficiently and I end up being lost.

    Thanks
  22. Yeah, I figured that had to be the case. I was reading the paragon wiki at work and when I read the description there was a glimmer of hope that I'd discovered something great. It was fleeting.

This doesn't always mean covering weaknesses. For instance, trying to cover Invul's psi-hole, while doable (with some messed up slotting, you can get more psi resist than energy resist), doesn't give you a whole lot of long-term gain given the relatively few psi-wielding enemies out there. However, a slight boost to its already formidable defenses and resistances will make you darn near unstoppable the other 99% of the time. On the flip side, a Fire or Dark armor user will WANT KB protection, because that's not a weakness you can just ignore.

And then there are things which are simply performance enhancers that are not tied to a particular strength or weakness, Recharge, for example. Aside from Granite tanks, I don't think any powersets have a -recharge penalty, and in all but the most extreme cases (like a Controller's AoE Hold), recharge isn't a huge issue as far as getting attacks off and doing damage and surviving. But, extra recharge is almost always worth having more of. "How much" you want depends on your build and your dependency on your tier 8's and 9's.
Really, I've gotten to the point where my main concern isn't necessarily maxing out the ability to kill the fastest. In the last few months I've focused mainly on the theme/concept of a particular character. With that said, I've been toying with taking one thematic aspect of a power and trying to push it to higher and higher levels even at the expense of being deficient in other areas (think Havok of Marvel's X-Men who has one power vs. DC's Superman who has several powers).

Now back to my original question. My hope was that I could soley focus on this particular character's strength (in this case, regeneration) but with all of the caps and limitations I wasn't sure how prudent this could be or how common other players took this approach with their characters.

More than likely I'm just going to sell out and eventually fall back to the same pattern of building up the power tree and buying the same invention sets. I always start of with such grand ideas when editing a costume in the creator and then running around in the tutorial but eventually being practical takes over.
  24. Just a quick question: can Radiation's Fallout be used on a fallen pet? Probably too good to be true. I've always skipped this power but now I'm considering it especially if it works this way.
  25. I was wondering about people's approach to set bonuses. In your experiences, is it your goal to use set bonuses to enhance strenghts you already have or to make up for abilities lacking in your AT/Powerset? For example, I've started a */Regeneration Scrapper and I'm looking ahead to set inventions. Is it overkill to slot all the +Regen, +Heal, +Recovery I can fit or maybe consider defense/resistance?

    Thanks.
