2 thoughts from this thread.
1. is that really how you guys pronounce that game, i always pronounced it like play-on.
2. yeah the communication is nice, and not to play favorites, but zwill has really been one of our most active community people in a long time. Time was you were far more likely to get babs or castle in a thread than the community person, now i liked babs and castle, so no tears there, but the coffee talks and high forum presence are noticeable and really make an 8 year old game feel alive and vibrant. the other recent event that I really liked was the nukes thing. hawk apparently put in the extra work to push up a feature that the community was hopeful for. he didnt have to, we were already told the schedule, and expectations were managed, but he raised the bar and exceeded those expectations, and it was appreciated, and i barely even play blasters. he made soon tm SOONER tm. And honestly, how can you not like ww? -
Yeah, i get that it isnt you, like i said, undeserved hate due to a few bad apples...generally just one that i can think of, really. but i got your point, im just trying to explain why it is tough to put down arms when you are so used to having your threads invaded by unproductive elements and they track the very narrow definition of "superhero" along with them to get all the bad buzz.
-
Quote:yep, call them alternate arms rather than robotic and throw in monstrous and more (or less) muscular options to all body types. it has been requested several times and i have signed each time. not sure if there would be any issue with joining them, my memory is hazy but if i recall, all robotic arms have a kind of attachment circle that might not be doable with organic arms...but it would make a lot of requests a lot easier, especially the ever present one for more muscular women.I have always thought that any and every new texture that wasn't just "clothes" should be added to the robotic arm options when added to the game.
how do those metallic arms look from the back? -
Quote:heres the thing. i suspect you dont understand how some of what you say comes off. the line about wanting" more superhero stuff in a superhero game" comes across as saying that what people want that is not 4 color tights and capes are not superhero themed, and furthermore does not belong. there is a very broad definition to what a superhero is that includes things like urban vigilantes, sci fi characters, some manga characters, and yes, even some fantasy themed characters, many of us greatly prefer that to the spandex and tights stuff, and making the argument in that fashion makes it sound like you dont feel that the broader superhero themed comic community is welcome.Again, I see a big fat straw man here. And yes, I'm using the term correctly. You people are misrepresenting my (and a few others) position, and then turning around and arguing against that misrepresentation rather than arguing against my position. Why? Who knows. But I would venture to guess it's because my position is not actually that arguable: which is that I love everything we have and that we're getting and that we're slated to get, but I'm disappointed that so much work went into something else that is not on the table and not on the schedule at all, meaning not in the pipeline and not being developed. They've got to work on something after everything else is said and done, right?
You keep telling me I'm comparing the value of these recent offerings, and I keep reminding you that I'm just as anxious for them and would have no interest in seeing the devs restructure their existing development schedule around a portion of the community's desire for classic super hero costume pieces. I keep reminding you people that lots of people spoke up for themselves in Savage's and Xanatos's threads, and you keep accusing me of speaking up for them, and I keep re-reminding you that no, they spoke for themselves.
Yes, the thousand suns line was cheesy, but it was off the cuff. All I meant was, the super hero comic book fans really want some more super hero comic book stuff. Not now. Not tomorrow. Day after tomorrow is fine. I don't hear too many people turning into the Hulk over this, but to hear it from you folks, you'd think we were. If you don't say what you want, you know what you might get? You might get something else.
All of the big disagreements I've ever had on these forums have revolved around accusations that I'm a blind fan boy. A few warts along the way have never soured me on the bigger picture--which is that City of Heroes is the best MMO and best "interactive comic book" ever made. If I'm entitled to anything, and I suspect I'm not, then I'm entitled to having one disagreement every couple of years or so without having it seemingly cancel out everything good I always have to say about the game. Is that too much to ask from you folks? Come on. Really? For folks who like to dress up in tights and do the right thing, you sure come off harsh. Villains get a pass, I guess. But the rest of you? I'm not that sensitive of a guy, but no one likes to be under the dog pile and threads like this make me wish I didn't post. It's just not right.
The thing that really frustrates me is that I know Zwillinger understood my message loud and clear, but I can't seem to get the message through to the rest of you folks that a strong desire to see our cooperative work lead to something substantial does not represent a contest between other themes in my mind, and never has. You keep bringing all of this other crap up that I absolutely love, and telling me that I'm angry that we're getting it. I keep saying "hey, apples," and keep hearing, "YOU can't oranges at US." Is that how it has to be around here? Black or white, right or wrong, apples or oranges? That's just not what the world looks like to me.
I would really like to have a normal conversation about a hot topic on these forums one day, without feeling like I am speaking through a babelfish on acid. I drop in to read the big threads even when I'm not posting, and I like a lot of you folks that are throwing rotten tomatoes at me today.
furthermore, while it isnt you, one poster, and im pretty sure you know who, loves to go into threads about non-golden and silver aged costume sets and repeatedly states that he does want more "superhero" stuff and less whatever asinine buzzword he is stuck on for the day. It doesnt take too many appearances by him to start turning people against an idea, particularly when nobody else in the "bloc" tells him to take it down a notch and comes in with a more productive message.
Personally, i dont care, more variety is always good and while i find the capes and spandex thing campy, im sure i could pull something out of it, but when the message so often IS framed as a binary statement, "more superhero stuff less monsters, or anime, or whatever, then its a line to fight, and i have seen a few productive threads get derailed on that line, it wasn't spandex, so its time to throw a fit. If you feel you are being pulled along with undeserved hate, well, you are, and its not fair, but unfortunatly a few real jerks can build up a lot of ill will to people who are otherwise constructive. I'm sure that there will be new costume stuff eventually but it is a process, and hitting the mark with something that is representative but not already in game, not exactly what is wanted or a blatent ip violation is trickier than making a new martial arts outfit because you started with more. there weren't 30 patterns of imperial dynasty armor in-game, we had nothing in the kind of chinese armor mold before(the natural pack was more mortal kombat ninja..if that, im still unsure what that was actually was supposed to be, nothing martial arts i have ever seen) so we were happy with what we got. tights that are unique, thematic and original..i can see why its not easy. -
Quote:Well, to be fair, its not entirely about graphics. gr already showed us they can make the graphics better, so its time consuming and expensive but possible in the existing game. what at least some of us think of with coh 2 is mechanics, the ability to throw objects and weaponize some objects (grab a light post and baseball swing a baddie), as well as the ability to grapple enemies, move while firing, climb on walls and maybe have a less binary mezz system. those are unlikely to happen in a way that would not be massively jarring for the game and would bulldoze a lot of cottages.
/If the wish is for CoH with better graphics? Ok, sure. But that's not CoH2, it's CoH Upgraded.
It would, however, also bring the game closer to representitive examples of the genre. so it is sad that coh is unlikely to be able to do these things, and competitors that do do them...dont do much else well, its really a case of wanting to take what is a good idea and seeing what our dev team can pull off with it. its likely to be far better than what their devs did with it. -
(obligatory virtue pocket d joke)
ok, that out of the way, the chainsaw does interest me. others have asked about possible animation, so i'll consider that question already out there, but my question is, will they have unique sounds? Chainsaws, as cool weapons in movies, draw a lot of their character from the loud motor. yeah they are actually pretty unweildy and heavy(unless you are using hedge trimmers.. and then the other serial killers are going to laugh at you) but i cna see the animations for tw working, but the sound really is going to be a big thing for them being done right.
and yeah, ill buy this, i can see making an alt costume for my stj vigilante character. Really its kind of a shame this came out now, some of the stuff we have seen would work for eltontowners and slavers in first ward. -
well, one thing it seems the writers should take away from this is a question of agency. contact telling you what to do and you going fetch unquestioningly weakens it. when the contact sets the stage but gives the illusion of your character making the calls then it makes them seem proactive, that is what people want, particularly villains. sound like a consensus?

dark astoria. Strong writing, great sense of tone, and memorable enemies. and a strong ending that makes you feel like your characters are doing something amazing. plus bonus badges for going the hard way.
also, i want more tips. they are a good way of introducing smaller story elements in more of a traditional comic sense, quick one off events that introduce non world threateing events that emphasize what it is to be a hero or villain. I wouldn't mind seeing "chain" tips, tips that lead to short, self contained arcs that can tell a bit more of a story and maybe flesh out the stories of existing but underutilized enemy groups like the sky raiders and vahz and the like. no crazy avs, no need for lots of time prohibitive unique maps, just some quick MA type arcs made by the devs to flesh out the world. -
Quote:I solo my ice/ice quite a bit, i can run huge numbers of enemies (better with energy absorption to have more) and ice has the aoe to bring them down. As per taunt, neuronia had my reason for taking and slotting taunt on my tanker, the set io bonuses help typed s/l defense. it generally seemed like most taunt sets had useful bonuses.if you are soloing a tanker you are doing it wrong, simple as that
tankers are for teams
brutes and scrappers are for solo
heal other is a useless power when soloing, that does not mean it should be removed or altered
Confront is always skipped, taunt is generally taken on brutes and always on tanks. It is a targeted aoe control tool that i find really helpful when i cant get them in my auras. -
indeed, honestly, outside of nostalgia, I tend to move forward in gaming myself, there are some great old games that just seem unplayable now due to advances in graphics, control and additional game mechanics. but i freely admit that is simply my perspective, i hear some people still bang away at daggerfall and alpha centauri. my point i was making was more about how games can get sequels. we wouldnt have gotten adventure of link if everyone was still playing zelda. we played we finished, we got all there was to get, and moved on. thats why mmos are harder to sequel, people still have stuff to do here.
do you really think enough people care about coh to make a movie viable? is the lroe really that deep while at the same time accommodating to people who are not major fans? dunno, I really think that for an 8 year old game with a modest population, we are where we are, and heavy marketing of movies that would be unlikely to get the budget to do the property justice would be a waste of time. heck, game movies carry enough of a stigma that i'm not sure its worth pursuing any game movie for quite some time. and ther have been ad pushes, when architecht, cov and gr came out, i saw lots of ads in gamer targeted sites (kotaku, penny arcade, gu comics) maybe it wont be a super bowl commercial, but the cost to likely return on cost is what it is. coh is an old niche game with a small but rabid fan base, I just dont see it growing bigger than that. -
you know, that is the funny thing about mmos. nobody thinks like this about super mario brothers. you play it, you enjoy it, but eventually you get all that it offers and you put it aside except for bouts of nostalgia, and then you move on to the sequel largely free and clear. mmos are weird in that they are persistant, they keep going, but eventually, yes, coh and every mmo will continue on for a few more years, eventually fall below what the studio feels is worth it, and taper off. so will all the other mmos. the trick is to appreciate it while it is. besides, few is undefined, maybe 2 years, maybe 5 years, maybe 10 years, eventually everything ends. things seem pretty brisk at present, so i think we have a bit more time in 'er. I suspect that coh will be the longest lasting of the current crop of superhero mmos, in addition to being the first.
-
Really if there is little chance of it. the mmo market isnt what it was,as johnny said, and we have seen 2 superhero mmos that came after coh fail to get any real traction in the market. I just dont see it happening. on the plus side coh has been more active in adding content post freedom than they were in some time, so i gotta say, i wish we could grapple, and throw objects and people, and do targeted movement attacks (tackles and flying kicks for example) but coh is growing in ways one generally does not associate with 8 year old games. and im pretty happy, especially given the recent pool customization news.
also to echo slick, sequels on mmos tend to do poorly because the people that enjoy the first game keep playing the first game, already being attached and established in that world. this would likely be stronger in coh since the heavy customization has allowed us to make characters that many of us have become very attached to. A lot of players might not want to move on to the new setting, and the playerbase would likely be too small to be financially viable. one sequel may buck the trend but only because it is so drastically different from its predecessor, that only the lore remains the same, everything else changed drastically.( ok lineage 2 did well too, but again, drastic change from overhead isometric to 3d diku mud style game)
Im not saying it cant happen, because i would not be in a position to know that information, but if i were a betting man..I wouldn't mind superpacks (kidding kidding) if i were a betting man, id bet against it. -
Quote:not at all. before the 3d reboot nobody (in mortal kombat) had a kick like that, and sonya blade was the closest after the reboot, but still was not the same, she ended with a turning kick. chun li also varied her height more, striking both legs and chest as well as face level. even baek/hworang in the tekken series didnt match exactly plus multi level roundhouse and hook kicks predate video games by quite some time, sobak practitioners (the style that gave brith to tae kwon do) often used multiple kicks without setting down their legsHmm... That might be the reason it went bye-bye but Flurry stayed, in addition to being absolutely horrible from a DPA standpoint, it was similar to... Raiden? From Mortal Combat? I didn't play the game so I'm not sure. They might have axed it because of possible legal action.
if i remember the past, people really just didnt like how long the animation was, it sacrificed too much time if the kick missed doing nothing. a whiff meant a long time swinging in the breeze for a power with low damage and only a single target. many people suggested making it a cone effect, but the devs instead just made a new animation. -
Quote:Ya know, i'd love this idea.Silly question. Would it be possible to tie cosmetic effects to enhancements like this again in the future, if they were less intrusive? Especially the existing damage procs, cause I'd like some visual cue they went off, but even if it was just a cosmetic thing, would be possibly neat.

was thinking of a really bad pun character, a nun costumed water/elec character, nun-conductive epoxy.

Quote:you know, if they made it an alt anim for flurry and maybe improved flurry a bit, i think that would be a good use of resources. and i sure as heck would take it with rian. even when it was mechanically inferior, it still worked enough for concept for me to take it.No different then Shadow Maul and Flurry which stayed. And it couldn't have had a longer cast time then the Total Focus line of animations.
Lets solve this: Is it possible to still demo record this animation? If so, how many frames is it? That would tell us the cast time. Sadly, I have never demo recorded so not sure how to even find this power. -
This is very good news, and i'm glad they have prioritized this. still want alt animations for several attacks, particularly the fighting pool moves, but this certainly makes that a much more easily accomplished task.
the only thing that i can see as a negative, and i stress this is the best possible kind of negative to have, is that a number of these 5th powers strike em as things i will want on some of my 50s with already tight builds, I see myself spending long hours with the somewhat unintuitive respec function.
still, thats not a bad problem to have, so much good stuff is coming that I will have to make some choices. so yeah, insert funny animated gif here, this is very good news. -
Quote:1. none, i always find t4 to not be worth the effort, if the surplus of stuff adds up to me being able to t4, thats nice, but to fully get one is kind of long work for modest returns relative to t3
- How many characters have you fully incarnated?
- How many characters have you incarnated?
- How many characters have you rolled with the intention of making them Full Incarnates?
- Do you have any characters that you, for whatever reason, are not going to make Incarnates?
2. curently 4/6 with the 5th having the slots open and just waiting for the components
3. none but it just kinda happens
4. none but lower play time characters are less likely due to practical time restraints. -
Quote:hmm, ok, have never heard of him, will hit up the wiki. thanksMerulina is dead, per Vincent Ross' arc. Best guess as to what killed her is a Nictus, possibly Arakhn or Dirge of Shadow.
ok, redside, thats why i never saw it, will have to take one of my rogues through it. -
Quote:the book one and the binder. for what its worth, it was nice having the backgrounds of enemies right there, and, the glowing write up they gave martial arts was one reason i decided to give the game a go(though in retrospect they did oversell it a bit, but it got better), so it got coh at least one long timer. They can just update the Prima Guide.
(Am I the only one who still has one? Am I the only one who knows what I am talking about?) -
my primary one is, what is the deal with merluna. we know she went silent, where is she now, what is she now, is there a link to the leviathan? bonus points if we learn more about the coralax other than that they are kind a nasty and have hybrid human/coralax slaves. In face, pre merluna going silent, weren't they a more civil race?
the questions about the kheldians would interest me now. they are an entire other species that we dont really know much about their cultures. I'd love to see more fleshed out on them. -
id imagine we will soon. we had no way of getting ixp at all solo previously, then we had a laborious way, and now we have mot and the emperor's sword. the pattern seems to be to open with one way, to funnel people through the new content then expand it as the content expands. so i'd be very surprised if within 2 issues we still don't have another way, and i wouldn't be surprised if there were a way in i24.

Quote:maybe, ill admit to being a mid level techie at best, so i felt the .net thing was kind of a self contained joke. bald brought verifiable sources, hair had fringe sites. but i freely admit that joke may have gone over my head. In real life i did once argue with a conspiracy theorist, a co-worker who i had previously been friends with. and i can sympathize, you cant show them the logical flaws in their arguments because verifiable information is all propaganda. its a fairly hard to crack shell because it literally disavows the existence of verifiable fact. best to just consider them a lost cause and move on to another topic that you can enjoy more than slamming your head against a brick wall.I think that was definitely part of it, but I read it more as using .NET pages with black backgrounds and 20 fonts each holds as much water (ooh, pun!) in winning an argument as going down a .Quote:My personal take on it is that if you can't be friends with someone, treat them like a client instead.
) otherwise its either you are worth time or you arent. neither case should lead to frustration on my part, so if i'm getting frustrated, its my own stupid fault for not realizing a lost cause and moving on. especially on a forum about a game I ostensibly enjoy. if forums are frustrating, its a better idea to just play the game.
-
Quote:the argument is futile, the one part of the discussion (bald guy) has simply realized that no logic or facts could persuade the second guy who was deep in conspiracy theory mode, so he just quit and did something fun instead...possibly voiding the warranty on his smartphone in the process. the second pane seems to be the other guy. poster 1 is the guy in the first pane, he has tried facts and reason, pane 2 is the second guy, who dismisses them as part of a grand conspiracy. both statements seem to be from the second "hair" guy, perhaps representing a dramatic pauseEven after the explanation, I still don't get it. Is going down a waterslide supposed to represent disengaging from the conversation, after admitting that he spent hours citing sources? Who is supposed to be talking in the second pane anyway, the guy with hair or the bald one? And what does this have to do with Water Blast and/or bankruptcy?
have to admit, this is how some threads by some posters are best approached on this forum, and i have, in the past, realized i should have gone down the waterslide earlier.
