This should really go in the guides section.

Quote:I disagree here. I have a couple of db toons, and neither one of them has all powers. In fact, I would strongly recommend *not* taking all the powers. There are really only two combos that I would say are worth having on a brute; attack vitals and sweep. Weaken and empower, and more specifically empower, are not giving to give much bang for your buck on a brute.
Dual Blades problems is that it requires all the powers minus taunt .
Some would cut something out l but I found weaken in the endgame to be a blessing .
Especially knowing that I am going to take way too much damage , so gives more bucks for your resist ..
Sweep is nice to have for any secondary that benefits from being saturated with foes. Inv, wp, elec, fire, and dark all come to mind. Inv and wp for defense and regen reasons. The other three for the fact that your damage aura will mulch them up while you do your thing with db.
Not sure if DoT from attack vitals is boosted by fury, but DoT is your friend on a toon that makes his wages doing damage.
In fact, my db/inv ended up being one of my looser builds ever due to how many powers I was able to skip from the primary. The only reason that I would say taking all of db is good is if you like the animations. Since I mentioned that, I will say that the set still looks stunning. Particularly mid-air. My db/inv is an angel and Typhoon's edge is probably my favorite animation ever when done in the air.
I say roll the db/elec. I rarely ever see db toons these days. The synergy is not huge between the two, but the fun would be. -
Welcome back to the madhouse. Why don't you post your prospective build so that we can give some feedback on what you have? That may get a better response.
-
This is not biggest reason that they are not as good for brutes. The pet damage/base damage options are they key here. After all- you can always wait a moment until fury is reasonably high and AAO is fully saturated and you still won't hit as hard using either SC or LR on a brute as you would on a scrapper. The combo is still good on a brute, but it is just plain better on a scrapper.
-
Great info. I would like to see if reformatted so it is less of a text wall, but that doesn't take away from the great info provided. (Maybe put in some breaks and spacing. Even some colors/bolding/italics/underlines/resizing to break it down some.
I have a wb/cold myself and I love the combo. This was my first venture into water blast and my first ride to 50 with cold domination. I am glad to see I am not the only one who skipped Snow Storm after respeccing at 50.
I did take and keep frostwork- and I am finally seeing why people think this is skippable. It is. I don't see much bang for my buck here for most situations/ATs. Great advice overall and I pretty much agree with mostly everything you said.
One small nitpick- you said that arctic fog is the only buff that benefits you. It's not...
EDIT: Thank you for lifting the fog on heat loss. I thought I understood how this power worked best, but I really don't. I didn't realize it is as good as it really is. I was unclear on it not being ST and that everyone would receive some sort of buff regardless of proximity. Wow! -
If I play with my incarnate choices on the build I posted and run a different power, I believe I hit perma Chrono shift and perhaps perma hasten. The downside to that was that I think I would routinely burn myself out of endurance. I didn't think it was a boon personally, but I could definitely see the benefit.
One of the great things about MIDs and this game is just playing around and seeing how vastly different two builds using the same sets can be. Kyriani, your build has some wicked resistance. -
Sure- I will post it. I have never posted anything online before, but I have never been asked.
I would also say it might do some good for you to consider more control friendly sets for your primary instead of the damage oriented ones. Just my thought though.
This build is perhaps a little pricey, but nothing outrageous. The kinetic combat was probably the most expensive portion. I feel like it is accurate, survivable and very control friendly. With the control hybrid, things just get stupid control wise.

I took a look at your build. I am no build guru, but I do have a grav/time that I love dearly. The combo is fun. I am unsure of what you wanted to really go for with the build. I love TFs and holding my own- so I considered high end survivability when designing my build. My build is geared towards survivability and accuracy.
Your build just doesn't seem very survivable in my eyes. Maybe it is the meleer inside of me trying to break out, but I would not consider the level of defense you put into that build to be acceptable. That is just me, personally. Not trying to give you crap or anything- just giving my opinion. You are going to pull plenty of aggro if you are using your powers, so why not plan on surviving the bounceback of enemies? -
Great data and test you did there. I don't know you have been talking to, but I always hear that invulnerability is stronger than willpower with the caveat of considering solely s/l type damage. If people know anything about the two, they should know that willpower handles exotic (I consider exotic to be mainly psi and toxic since they are both uncommon) type damage with more ease than invulnerability without question.

Quote:I agree with everything you said. Perhaps it is better to let him clarify, but he possibly wants it reviewed as it has overshadowed much of the earlier melee sets in many areas. Some people seem to be calling for rebalancing/nerfs here.Ninjas (too fragile) and Mercs (spec ops) definitely need looking at, maybe beast and necro. Though I do have a problem with saying over half the sets for an AT are under performing
Electric blast... I'd wait till i24 hits beta so we can see how much of a difference to draining TB with no crash makes. Though Tesla Cage does need to become as powerful as a T3 blast, and Voltaic needs adjustments.
Do have to ask, Gecko.. how does Street Justice in need of a looking at? Its one of the best melee sets, flat out.
Traps is fine, but Devices needs work. Time Bomb needs to be completely replaced.
Ice Control definitely needs work, Gravity is a bit more iffy. Dimension Shift needs to go. The 'fix' was cool an interesting but it doesn't really help. However, the devs have stated that there will be a non-damage KB-KD proc IO. This will fix wormhole for the people that have a vendetta against KB, and keep the KB for the people who like to have fun.
EDIT: I see that wasn't the direction he was going at all from the post on page 2.
My list:
Energy melee
trick arrow
force fields
sonic resonance
electric blast
most MM primary sets
most Manip sets
stone armor -
The great thing about vampires is that there are so many dimensions to them. Certainly a lot that can easily be conveyed in our game too.
Super strength
super speed
dark melee
invulnerability
mind control
psi assault
dark control
darkness affinity (sorta)
willpower
dark armor
street justice
super reflexes
martial arts
you could do DP/AR if you were a Death Dealer type from Underworld
Katana/dual blades/broadsword
illusion
I see you've already started a stalker. Don't stop there- you can make a whole coven of vampire characters! -
I read some of the posts from that other thread. In fact, I was reading at the very beginning and fell off at some early point.
I know that there is a lot of valid and healthy discussion going on here and there, but I just am flat out tired of any kind of tanker buff resulting in a brute nerf. I wish that there could be a thread of tanker improvements that entirely does not mention brutes a single time.
Yes, scrappers are mentioned in that other thread. Though I have no numbers to support it, it seems like they were mentioned more than I have seen in any other recent tanker buff thread. But I am just tired of tanker buffs=brute nerfs arguments. -
I just want to say thank you to the fair forum goers who were able to point out a possible reason for the OPs experience other than "Freedumb sux..." I find it amusing yet silly that there is so much contempt for Freedom on these boards sometimes. It seems like some people forget that we all play the same game. Playing on one server doesn't make you superior or inferior to other players.
Yes, I play on Freedom. Yes, I have completed the trial multiple times with full leagues. Yes, there are good players. Yes, there are bad players. Yes, the same is true of other servers too. -
Quote:I recall reading somewhere that shield defense has a stronger taunt aura than invulnerability.I don't recall whether Shield or Inv has the stronger taunt aura (Mids says both are 17 seconds), but they're both quite strong.
The damage you'd lose compared to a Scrapper will be substantial, while the survivability you'll gain will be pretty minimal. However, a Scrapper has a much harder time tanking for a team, so if that's what you want to do and Tankers are off the table, go Brute.
If I were you OP, I'd roll a SS/SD. Like someone else said, that is something that is not available to scrappers and something that will rock your socks off thoroughly. Mine hits like a freight truck going downhill at about 200mph.
I know you've already done SS a number of times, but the pairing of SS and shield is something to behold (minus possible rage crashes heh). -
Quote:Since when is SD not good for defense? I mean... soft capped positional defense is very attainable if you know how to make a decent build.I'd say scrapper, let the crits do the work shield defense is not all that great in terms of defense so to stand in a mob for fury, minus IO slotting and purples is somewhat suicide. I am sure you are aware of this as I saw a ss/sd brute in your sig. As a scrap you can enter with Shield charge and the hopeful crit and mop away at the survivors with stj's cones.
And where did the OP say that he would not invest in his build with IOs?
I would say scrapper for this combo. SD favors scrappers- and crits on St J are a thing of beauty. -
Quote:I will second this... but only because you have stamina, physical perfection and superior conditioning. If you had nothing beyond stamina, the endurance modification increase would be largely null.Go agility alpha...brutes get less mileage out of musculature...and the recharge is always nice...
You know what... even with that said, I think Cardiac is still worth looking into. If you are already positionally soft capped, unless you are knocking at the incarnate softcap, the added defense may not be worth it to you. However, the endurance reduction in Cardiac is something that pretty much anyone can appreciate. -
Sure, you can have the old ET back on any AT... as long as by any AT you mean Stalkers and by ET you mean AS...
Seriously, I agree to an extent. However, the AS change was needed to help stalkers achieve a more viable role and a more practical application of AS. I do think it is time to revisit some of the EM nerfs though. Though it is entirely my opinion- EM is about as lackluster as they come. -
Quote:True. I have a couple of incarnate shielders, both have rebirth or ageless available for use. I wouldn't use barrier on those toons, but the OP was looking for a way to reach incarnate soft cap... this is just one of several ways this can be done.Since Shield has no heal in the set, many (most?) Shield builds use Rebirth. Trading that for Barrier, even if it gets you to the cap for 30 seconds every 120, is probably a net loss in survivability.
I still wouldn't go so far as to call it a net loss personally, but that is just me. -
Well, are you doing the Solo incarnate content with no incarnate powers? Or are you just going back and doing it to say that you've done it? If you already have incarnate powers, you could always run a build with constant barrier. I hear t4 can be made perma. I don't know the exact numbers, or how much it degrades through its cycle, but that should be enough to put a 45% defense character at 59%+ defense most of the time.
-
Out of the options you mentioned, I would probably roll fire/kin troller.
-
I have three kins total in the cities. My first venture into Kinetics was a kin/elec defender. Bleh... Damage was meh, and the sapping from the secondary wasn't as great as I had imagined. Still a solid team player, but really a buff bot at times. (this was well before AoE SB!)
2nd venture in was a fire/kin corr. This blew my defender out of the water. So much destruction and support rolled into a nice package. I still have fun playing her, even though she doesn't get much attention these days. The damage never disappoints on this toon.
3rd venture was a dual pistols/kin corr. This one ended up being a huge blast. Yes, the damage was down a notable step from the fire/kin corr, but I still enjoy the animations pretty thoroughly. Also, something about a fast recharging crashless nuke that is self buffed with FS is just... right.
If you can deal with the animations of dp and the so so damage, consider this. I had a blast all the way to 50 and beyond. No, the swap ammo options are not as useful as you might think, but I do find it fun to roll between different ammo types to feel like you are "debuffing". -
I will throw my support behind a fiery aura brute. I have one that is softcapped to s/l without barrier and she is a hoot and a half. Get some good recharge on it and you will be having a real blast. I can always fall back on barrier if things get too hairy or demonic if things are just flat out ugly. My main fiery aura brute is also fiery melee, and she feels like a wrecking ball. Yes, mitigation is not her strong suit, but playing her in incarnate trials never gets old. I am an oddball that truly enjoys TPN, MoM, and DD trials too, if that helps you in your decision.
-
I haven't played BS myself into high levels... does it provide any notable damage mitigation? Or is it all about heavy s/l damage? If it provides any mitigation, it might be the better choice to pair with /regen. KM is fun, I have a brute at 50 with it. I believe that brutes benefit the least from KM's benefits when compared to stalkers and scrappers.
Even though you have done it more than once, I still would suggest you pick up a bs/regen. If you are open to suggestion, may I suggest TW/regen? -
Quote:Thanks for reading negativity where there is none. A handout is defined as something is something given freely or distributed free of charge. That is what you asked for in your initial post, was it not?If I had a dollar for such negativity....
Anyway, I think I've been around much longer than you...on the forums for MUCH longer, that's for sure. I have no idea where you think this is a handout. Tons of people post builds. I really don't know what your damage is? Maybe you're a special needs child and if so then I sincerely apologize for the snark.
Shangz, thanks for the build. I'll see what I can do...
All I was saying was that posting your own build for critique would be a better idea than just asking for one that someone else created. This is good as a good starting point for any build would be including powers that you like and not ones that someone else may prefer.
As far as the other fluff in your post about who has been here longer- what relevance does that have to anything I said? None. Just because you have or have not been here longer than anyone else doesn't mean that your opinion of anything carries more weight than anyone else's.
What is my damage? Wow, way to go with the personal attacks. No, I am not a special needs child, and I won't stoop to your level of calling names or insulting people that are retarded or autistic.
I will be mature and apologize if my post came across as negative. Sorry for that.
The only thing I wished to convey was that posting your own build is a great way to ask for help. Better than the alternative of just asking someone else for one. -
I didn't read the whole thing... just the first couple of sentences.
I don't think that Luke Cage is a tanker at all personally. He comes off as more of a ss/inv brute, or more accurately a ss/inv scrapper if it were ever ported to them.
Lol @ the wall of text armor.
