Elec/Shield - Scrapper or Brute?

Hey there.

I'm thinking of remaking one of my characters with Electric Melee and Shield Defence, and it's primarily for the Lightning Rod, Shield Charge combo (looks REALLY fun)

I wanted to know, though, which is the powerset combo best suited for, a Brute or a Scrapper?

I'd love to hear your opinions on this.

Scrapper is the better better choice. Scrapper is able to maximize the damage on Lightning Rod & Shield Charge.

More specifically, pseudopet summons (which is what LR and Shield Charge are) have a damage cap of 400%. That's 100% base, nearly or more than 100% from enhancements, and full Fury can make up the other 200%. That wastes the potential damage buff from Against All Odds in two of the best powers from the combination.

Scrappers benefit from damage buffs like the one in AaO more since they have higher base damage. Brutes have inherently low base damage because they make up for it with Fury. Scrappers generally won't be brushing up against the damage cap for pseudopets as often. In situations where they are (say, with a kinetics character on the team), they still benefit more from extreme buffing.

Anything with a +damage buff in either primary or secondary is better on a scrapper, for the reasons Android listed.

Anything with a damage aura is better on a brute (damage auras, with the exception of Quills, can't crit).

Hm, so, Scrapper it is. Sounds good, I usually find myself making a scrapper anyway.

Thanks for the advice!

I'd vote scrapper, but would lobby for a different combo, personally. But, if you're set on it these 2 powers, Scrapper is the way to go..

Unless I misunderstand, the OP seems to be interested in the Lightning Rod/Shield Charge combo specifically.

It's true that Elec/Shield has some weaknesses; it's not as good as other Scrapper pairings for single-target damage against AVs, for example.

But if you have another fun Scrapper combo to advocate, please do; I'm not the OP, but I do like reading about fun powersets and/or good synergies.

This. You usually use these at the start of a fight, so they are poor on a brute.

I really should do something about this signature.

This is not biggest reason that they are not as good for brutes. The pet damage/base damage options are they key here. After all- you can always wait a moment until fury is reasonably high and AAO is fully saturated and you still won't hit as hard using either SC or LR on a brute as you would on a scrapper. The combo is still good on a brute, but it is just plain better on a scrapper.

Words to the wise aren't necessary- it's the stupid ones that need them.

I kinda agree with PRAF68_EU. If you're waiting for Fury to rise, one of two things is happening:
  • You're using other attacks, wearing the enemy hit points down -- which risks wasting the damage of your pumped-up big hitters as overkill
  • You're just waiting and not attacking, which is just dead time in your DPS.

Neither sounds appealing.

I am a nut, but regardless, I went brute, just because I wanted to have some fun sets to get me over the hump learning to enjoy playing a brute.

A bit redundant, my favorite combo is Lightning Rod>Shield Charge with a Spring attack chaser for any needed mopup.
