Paragon Studios prides themselves on developing a game where no single archtype is inherently critical to any particular content that is in the game.

The flip-side of not really needing a "Holy Trinity" for content is that... you don't need a "Holy Trinity" for content.

Cases in point on why this can somehow be a bad thing can be found in threads from the likes of Kioshi or Johnny Butane; threads which go to extensive lengths to convince the player-base / developers that massive changes must be undertaken on existing archtypes such as Stalkers and Tanks. The question of whether or not the need, or lack of a need, for a specific Archtype or combination of Archtypes results in obsoleting any particular Archtype, as the linked threads demonstrate, does tend to lead to heated arguments.

My own personal opinion, and the one I think the developers share, is that choice of Archtype comes down to playstyle.

Basically: Play what you want to play.

    League

The wait time to increase the size of an open league has been lowered from 5 minutes to 90 seconds.
This is the time that players in an Open league have to wait, so more players have time to join before the Incarnate Trial starts.
XP will now scale properly for leagues larger than 9 players.
League leaders should now be able to invite players into a league while on an Incarnate Trial map.
    Does that answer your question?

Out of morbid curiosity I did a Google search for the term: tanks obsolete Johnny_Butane site:boards.cityofheroes.com

Not surprisingly some of the search results go all the way back to 2009.

Johnny, you've been banging on this subject for at least 2 years now. In all that time it seems you still do not realize that NOBODY ELSE IS BUYING WHAT YOU ARE SELLING.

Okay, fine. After 2 years we get it. You don't like tanks. You think they are useless. That is your opinion.

As pointed out in this thread by Rylas and other players, you make massive assumptions about how players act and operate within each archtype to reach that opinion. In making those assumptions you ignore various realities about the game.
    • Reality #1: The game does not start at level 50 and Incarnate powers
    • Reality #2: A majority of the game still uses SO's and / or Crafted IO's with little to no set bonuses.
    • Reality #3: Enough accounts had not achieved level 50 that the developers actually commented on the relatively low number of accounts when they moved the unlock level for Epic Archtypes.
    • Reality #4: Free to play and Premium players won't have Incarnate Abilities to rely on
    • Reality #5: Not all teams have a healer
    • Reality #6: Not all teams that have a buffer have a buffer that has the buff powers.
Now, I'm honestly not going to sit here and go through each of these realities to explain them to you Johnny... because... I do not think you are interested. You've had multiple players call you out on your "Tanker-Hatred" for well about two years now, and well, the fact that you are still trotting that "Tanker-Hatred" out on a regular basis shows that you haven't read one single bit of it... or possibly if you had read it, you just ignored it.

At some point Johnny, you have got to realize that nobody else shares your opinion. All you wind up doing is convincing players that you are somebody who can safely be dismissed and ignored.

  9. honestly. I'm undecided.

To make a point of it, NCSoft's behavior over the use of the new launcher really calls into question just how seriously Paragon Studios can be about the V.I.P. program being about the "subscribers"

I'm not fundamentally opposed to the idea, but I think the Standard Code Rant applies. Making it so that powers in one set count as prerequisites for powers in another set is potentially a major headache.
If that was his intent, I do not think it would be likely to happen based on the upcoming Paragon Rewards program, as well as the existing City Traveler Veteran reward.

I'm not entirely sure the developers could be sold on the idea of adding another method to "unlock" travel powers that requires additional development resources and isn't as effective as the solution that is already coded into the engine.

    ... what?

Last time I checked all of the existing travel powers; Super Jump, Fly, Teleport, and Super Speed; are already unlocked by taking one of the preceeding powers in the power pool; e.g. Combat Jumping OR Jump Kick unlock Super Jump; Air Superiority OR Hover unlock Fly; recall friend OR teleport foe unlock Teleport; and Hasten OR Flurry unlock Super Speed.

The only exception so far is the 5 year reward: City Traveler.

Subscribing for 5 years in City of Heroes allows players to skip having to take a preceding power in order to unlock the "actual transportation" power. Given that we do not know yet how this Veteran Reward will map to the upcoming Paragon Rewards program, I'd say we'd be better off waiting and seeing what the intent is for this particular reward.

So, I'm not sure what you're asking, because what you wrote is what we already have in the game.

That there are no plans for a name-purge has been taken to mean that trial-accounts will be converted into free-to-play accounts, and that this of course means that anybody who has made a character on a trial account will be able to keep that character.

Is that really what will happen?

    Nobody knows yet.

The particular envelope of bondage has already been... pressed. Given the comic-book nature of City of Heroes, there is ample prior art such as line up of various Detective Magazines featuring attractively clad females in various states of restraint; neverminding the... ahem... stuff Frank Miller has been responsible for.

Now, there is a question as to how much this game, City of Heroes could get away with before hitting an M rating. Would a power-set based on Shibari / Kinbaku really press into M rated territory? Would it really be any more sensually suggestive than implications that the various Tentacle based powers already create?

(As a note, the following links show nothing explicit, and I don't think the violate the forum T.O.S., but I would not recommend opening them with wild abandon)

Would costumes based on Lolita Fashion, Spreading rompers, Autumn's Bondilocks, or just something little kinky like gags and blindfolds, really push a Teen Rating more-so than the lack of clothing that is currently possible to achieve in the game? Would adding a bit of "fetish" type wear really be so different from the various chains, meshes, and other costume parts already in the game?

My own personal opinion is that such "fetish" type costume parts or power-sets could probably be introduced into the game while retaining a "teen" rating, just based on the precedent of what is already in the game. However, it is also my opinion that the developers would probably NOT be comfortable with the idea of creating powers influenced by Shibari / Kinbaku, or adding costume parts inspired by Sub-Shop or Adult-Baby-Shop.eu.

No, you don't need a previous account. However, it is possible if you have been playing a TRIAL account to create a completely NEW account that is separate from the TRIAL account when purchasing a retail code.

No, it just means he has to give the information for the subscription in order to activate the account.

I was forced to have a friend give me an invitation to verify my account for COH, as it wouldn't allow me to play any other way. So here I am, using only the basic trial, yet I should have a free month, both expansions and a bunch of free stuff to go with it.

    log in at www.plaync.com

you should be able to verify your account status there.

It is possible that you may have created a "new" account rather than using a pre-existing account.
  20. Your basic problem is going to be a simple one, but I need to digress first.

Your monitor size does not matter.

What matters is your monitor RESOLUTION.

Just to give you an idea here, Newegg.com currently lists 50 different monitors with a screen size of 24".

Of those monitors 36 have a recommended resolution of 1920*1080, while 14 have a recommended resolution of 1920*1200.

Just because that is the resolution the monitor says it can display, DOES NOT MEAN that it is the resolution the monitor actually displays. Cases in point, I had a Scepter 23" monitor. While the monitor said it could accept 1080p ... it's actual resolution was... 1366 x 768. I currently have a Westinghouse SK-32H240S. The monitor says it will accept 1080(i), but it's actual resolution is... 1366 x 768.

I hope this explains why telling us the monitor size... tells us absolutely nothing at all.

    Now, back to your problem.

Your basic problem is two fold:

First, a 4870 is simply too weak to run the game in a high resolution in ultra-mode. The starting point for LOW Ultra-Mode in 1920*1200 is about the RadeonHD 4850. The 4870 will buy you more frames per second, but not necessarily any more detail.

Second, Anti-Aliasing is only enabled on ATi cards through the game.

You need to TURN OFF any AA settings in Catalyst Control Center.

You guys are making some fantastic suggestions, a couple of which may already exist and are awaiting their release into the wild.

A few people have asked about the Clunker aura in the Steampunk pack, specifically if the oil path can be separated from the flying cogs, and vice versa. Yes, it can. It is also color customizable. On the same note, I greatly appreciate all the suggestions for future Path Auras. Many are doable. Since it’s been asked, path auras are not limited to “decals” on the ground, and can contain rather complex particle movement. So things like fire, smoke, frost, bugs, etc., are completely in the realm of possibility.

Also, what the… you guys don’t like Hasten?

    I’m kidding.

I’ve seen a metric ton of requests for pool/epic/ancillary powers customization. (And no, asking for it is not breaking the rules at all.) I’m a long way from promises on that one, but all I can say right now is that your requests have been noted, underlined, and bolded, as have qualms with the default travel power effects.

Apologies for the short post, but today is a busy day. I’ll try to address more of your stated requests and concerns in the coming days.

Like it or not, the average Linux user these days checking out Debian spin-offs like Mepis or Ubuntu are not interested in esoteric / exotic systems configurations.

There's already been a thread about getting around the launcher and running the game directly, as well as some unique solutions to solving the patching issue... but most of those work-arounds all run into the same problem. A user needs to have a valid installation of Microsoft Windows.
