While there are no strict guidelines, some powersets are easier to explain as certain origins than others. Controller/dominator primaries are lacking any blatantly natural powersets. While you can certainly make a natural troller/dom, it takes a bit more explaining than say an AR/dev blaster or a BS/Shield scrapper.

I've recently gotten into playing dominators. However, I don't like playing up in melee, I die too much. So I'm looking for sets I can stay at range with and be effective. I'm pretty familiar with which control sets play more from range and which play better in melee, but not so much the assault sets. Which ones would be best to play strictly from range, and which ones get the most mileage out of playing in melee?

Why are the enemies in the incarnate trials level shifted? I understand why they've put higher level enemies in, that's not my question. My question is why use level shifts rather than just make them higher level? So why have 54+3 enemies in Dilemma Diabolique rather than just having level 57 enemies? Is there actually a difference as far as the enemy is concerned between 54+3 and 57? I know there is for a player (inf rewards are different, sidekicking is different, and presumably if you were actually level 53 instead of 50+3 you'd have more power choices and more slots), but none of those apply to enemies. Or is it just that it was easier to use the level shift code than have to write new code to deal with enemies that were higher than level 54, which have never existed before.

I really think you're worrying about nothing here. I run trials pretty frequently, and I have never once seen the leader turning people away for not being the right AT. I've never even seen a leader post that they're LOOKING for a specific AT. I've seen people not get invited because they didn't have enough level shifts, but that's a different issue.

I've always wondered why the breakdown values on some things were so awful. I think the worst is breaking down a very rare component into threads. You get like 20 of them if I remember correctly?
-
You can absolutely get more than one level shift. I have a character that has all 3 of them and level 54 minions in the incarnate trials con yellow. If you could only have one level shift, they would con red.
Maybe your friend was confused because only one of the level shifts applies outside of incarnate content? -
Right, so there are two reasons to generic the character rather than just one. If you make this character, it will get reported, and generic'd. Maybe the first GM won't report it, but one of them will. It's a sure thing.

Quote:I'm not sure why it needs justifying. A lot of the contacts in the game aren't super powered at all, and I haven't heard anyone saying we need to justify why we'd take missions from those people. If they are not superior how do you justify our players following or getting missions from them?
Quote:Or it requires a team of players (i am talking about not top-end uber builds with correct power selections in here) to beat one of those?
Quote:If they were my collegues I wouldn't bother to get missions from them RP-wise or would drag them into mission with me.
And that's fine. Sometimes I want to play The Flash too. But I don't want to be forced to do so. Sometimes I want to play Superman instead. I think it's design to make a superhero MMO, make this overpowered uber-hero who's looked up to by the whole world, and then tell the people who are paying for the game "Look at all the cool stuff that can be done and how powerful and looked up to a hero can be, but that's not for you, you can't do that, only the NPCs can do that, sorry". -
I don't horde inf per se. Not in the way that some people on here do. I do try to keep 15 or 20 billion on hand at any one time though, so if I decide I want to build something expensive I don't have to spend time making money before I can do it.

Quote:It's not that I mind there being signature NPCs. It's just that I don't like that they are significantly more powerful/special than us, and we only get to shine because of increasingly contrived reasons that they can't do things themselves. So for the sake of CoH's writing, I do prefere there to be some big heroes like the Freedom Phalanx. Of course, I'd also like for them to give some of these signature characters more depth.
The statesman TF is a perfect example of this. "Hey, Recluse is up to some bad stuff. I'd deal with it myself, but he'd notice. You guys on the other hand aren't nearly powerful or famous enough to be on his radar, so you might be able to get it done. Good luck"
I want the signature NPCs to be our colleagues, not our superiors. -
This apparently isn't a universal thing. I have a couple characters that I confirmed the alignment of before the SSAs came out and I'm still able to get A-merits as rewards for the SSAs and trade normal merits for them in Fort Trident.

I'm curious what the long-term effects of converters will be. I'm kind of worried that my niche (crafting and selling damage purples) is going to collapse permanently and I'm going to have to find a new way to make money.
-
With the new catalyzed ATOs being account bound, the technology obviously exists to detect whether you're sending an email to yourself since they're account bound and they can only be emailed to your own global. Since that's the case, could we remove the restrictions on emails when they're being sent to ourselves? Specifically, the need to have something in the subject and message fields, and the 15 second delay. It's really annoying when I need to mail myself a stack of enhancements, and I keep getting the "you must wait 15 seconds between sending emails" message.
-
I wouldn't mind being able to do this. I bought dual pistols and demon summoning, and can't see myself ever using them.
-
The problem with selling them on the forums is that pretty much everyone on here knows that converters are coming, and that it's going to make the price of them freefall. You'd be better off putting on the market and praying it sells before tuesday.

Hopefully no one will. WE as players should be the main protagonists of the game. WE should be doing the great deeds and leading the charge against the forces of evil. We shouldn't be outshined by overpowered Mary-Sue NPCs.

My favorite 50s at the moment are my Fire/SR scrapper and my Dark/Shield scrapper. Both are lots of fun to play, both can Solo AVs pretty easily (and without the use of incarnate stuff).

Eh, not everyone is part of an active SG or has a bunch of friends with farmers who will run them through for free.
-
Quote:I'm assuming this is directed at me, since I'm the one that suggested he pay for a cave farm.Maybe it is just me but I find it very annoying that someone came in here and literally suggested that you *pay* to achieve what you can do with very little effort on your part. That just comes across as someone trying to take advantage of someone like the OP who is seeking advice on how best to help out his buddies.
The OP was looking for a quick way to level up. I tried to help by suggesting the quickest way I know of to do so. I wasn't trying to take advantage of him. I didn't suggest he pay ME for a cave farm. I don't even have a character capable of running them.
And it's not something you can achieve with very little effort on your part, unless you have a second account with a toon that can run those farms. Because if you know of another legitimate way that someone can earn 30 levels in an hour in this game, I'd love to hear it. -
Statesman would have been top on my list, but he's already gone now. Tyrant and his overpowered praetorian crew would be next up probably.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I've always wanted more blaster secondaries. Unfortunately, I don't think we're going to get them any time soon. We may get one here and there, but the problem with them is that blaster secondaries are unique. They can't simply be shuffled from one set to another whole. You could put one together from powers from other sets, but it's still more work than simply proliferating one from one set to another. And more than that, once you put in the work to make one, it's only usable by a single AT, whereas every time they make a new melee set, 4 ATs get to use it, and every time they make a new blast set 3 get to use it. It's the same reason that dominators have so few secondaries, and MMs have so few primaries.
I do like the idea of a martial-arts type secondary though. A radiation secondary would be nice too. -
Quote:I like both these ideas. My two ideas for snipes:
1) Backport the dominator sniper attack adjustments to corruptors, defenders, blasters, and any other AT with a snipe I'm forgetting about. That is, increase damage scale from 2.76 to 3.56, recharge from 12s to 20s, end cost from 14.35 to 18.51. This would probably be the least controversial change.
2) Make all interruptible attacks for all ATs autohit. To-hit rolls only exist to add uncertainty and keep players on their toes a bit. Interruptibility already adds uncertainty, so there is no need for a to-hit roll on top of that. Sniper attack IO sets would need an adjustment, but they're in need of an overhaul anyway.
I would also like to see some in-combat utility added to snipes. And for those who say that would make them no longer snipes, I disagree. Compare it to real life. You can fire a sniper rifle without taking the time to carefully set up your shot. It won't be as effective, but you can still do it. Snipes in this game should be the same way. If you're willing to accept the interrupt time, they're the longest-ranged and hardest hitting ST attacks in the set. If you want to fire them off faster you can, but the accuracy, damage, and range will be reduced. -
Depends on how much money you have. You won't easily find someone willing to run you through for less than that though, I know, I've looked.
