They can claim "No backing up" until they are blue in the face. That does not actually trump the rights granted by federal copyright law. I believe the relevant section is 117...

§ 117. Limitations on exclusive rights: Computer programs53

    (a) Making of Additional Copy or Adaptation by Owner of Copy. — Notwithstanding the provisions of section 106, it is not an infringement for the owner of a copy of a computer program to make or authorize the making of another copy or adaptation of that computer program provided:

    (1) that such a new copy or adaptation is created as an essential step in the utilization of the computer program in conjunction with a machine and that it is used in no other manner, or

    (2) that such new copy or adaptation is for archival purposes only and that all archival copies are destroyed in the event that continued possession of the computer program should cease to be rightful.

    (b) Lease, Sale, or Other Transfer of Additional Copy or Adaptation. — Any exact copies prepared in accordance with the provisions of this section may be leased, sold, or otherwise transferred, along with the copy from which such copies were prepared, only as part of the lease, sale, or other transfer of all rights in the program. Adaptations so prepared may be transferred only with the authorization of the copyright owner.

    (c) Machine Maintenance or Repair. — Notwithstanding the provisions of section 106, it is not an infringement for the owner or lessee of a machine to make or authorize the making of a copy of a computer program if such copy is made solely by virtue of the activation of a machine that lawfully contains an authorized copy of the computer program, for purposes only of maintenance or repair of that machine, if —

    (1) such new copy is used in no other manner and is destroyed immediately after the maintenance or repair is completed; and

    (2) with respect to any computer program or part thereof that is not necessary for that machine to be activated, such program or part thereof is not accessed or used other than to make such new copy by virtue of the activation of the machine.

    (d) Definitions. — For purposes of this section —

    (1) the “maintenance” of a machine is the servicing of the machine in order to make it work in accordance with its original specifications and any changes to those specifications authorized for that machine; and

    (2) the “repair” of a machine is the restoring of the machine to the state of working in accordance with its original specifications and any changes to those specifications authorized for that machine.
I am not seeing anything there that grants the copyright owner authorization to override the rights granted to the rightful user of the software to make a backup.

I'm sure there is precedent for other works as well. But that will take a bit of extensive digging, and it is way too late at night for me to engage in such a hunt.

That is the second best way to "cope" with laws concerning digital restrictions management policies. It may be technically illegal to circumvent the restrictions in order to exercise your rights, but so what? As long as you aren't redistributing, what are they going to do? Raid your home to confiscate anything you may have backed up against their wishes?

Are there seriously people who will absolutely refuse to exercise their fair use rights and instead just "cower in the corner" and do nothing because "the law says I can't do this. And the law is the law"? Personally, I suspect that the ones in threads like this who just keep parroting over and over that "you can't do that because it is illegal" are simply playing D-Bag's advocate. Not calling out anyone here specifically, but I have seen plenty of these discussions elsewhere, and am pretty convinced that the ones touting the letter of the law truly don't believe what they are arguing.

And even if they did attempt to claim otherwise, it would still be perfectly legal due to a thing called fair use. No matter what any imaginary property owners may claim, you always have the right to back up any media that you legally acquired.

    Why Make Others?

I guess that question is the equivalent of asking "Why have more than one choice in":

    Operating Systems
    Video Game Consoles
    Office Suites
    Image Editors
    Media Players
    Cars
    MP3 Players
    Restaurants
    etc etc etc...

Also, the gangs wear characteristic colors. Red/black, with goat/pentagrams, is Hellions. White/black with skulls... is skulls.
And when you hit level 5, there's the Lost. They wear tires, TVs, wicker, and other oddities. Their names though are not very indicative of their group (Scrounger, Headman, Aberrant, etc).
  7. They should be under Back Options. If you have some other back option active, or the Bolero, or Trenchcoat(I think), you can't wear wings.

If you still can't find them, then try quitting to desktop and then restarting the game.

    Practice helps.

How did you pick 23,456 inf? That seems like an unhelpful price to me. 25,001 is only a little higher, but I suspect your bids would fill much sooner.
Lately, I have been doing the "That's the Combination on My Luggage" technique for placing my bids. No particular reason really. Also, I did go ahead and upped it to 34567 (or it may have been 45678...don't remember exactly), and they were purchased immediately.

What made it even sweeter was I then crafted the endurance reducers and had Holly Day, who is at perma level 10 until after the Winter Event (so she can be my purchase agent for Winter's Gifts - Slow Resistance recipes) put up those endurance reducers. Surprisingly, she has been getting anywhere from 700,000 to 800,000 for them. And this rate, she is going to be quite wealthy by the time she resumes leveling in January.

As for the Hammi Goo, yeah, fat chance getting one for 1 inf. I have a standing bid in for one at 765432, and that went in just a couple days ago. However, that one should get filled within the week.

So, since my PB did a frankenslotting with primarily level 25 IOs in her level 30 and under powers, how hard would she be hit in effectiveness when she exemps? Higher level powers I went ahead and did higher level IOs in, since when she exemps down, those would not be available anyway.

Like, say she exemps down to 15 or 20? Will the level 25 IOs not be effected too badly, or will she get a big performance hit?

  11. If you are really curious, you can make a trial account, put some otherwise worthless stuff up on the market (at a price high enough that no one in their right mind would bid on it), then let the account expire. After say, 65 days, go ahead and reactivate it for a month and see if your stuff is still there.

Bah. It has taken much much longer for my purchase orders for Never Melting Ices to be filled by bidding and waiting. I need these for some 45 Endurance Reducers, and some set IOs that are going to be crafted and resold.

My bids went in like 3 days ago (23,456 each if I remember right), and none have been filled yet. So bidding low and waiting patiently is not always viable. Well, in this case it is, but for someone who has just leveled and is in need of the stuff to craft their enhancements now without making the team wait, patience is not a virtue (or a Protector...or a Liberty, etc for that matter).

Of course, in that case, it is best to plan ahead and have what you will need at least 2 levels out. But still...

I've also noticed that uncommon salvage (both arcane and tech) now fetches a pretty decent sum consistently, usually in the 5 digit and often in the 6 digit ranges). At least, the tier 2 and 3 uncommons do well. Low level uncommon salvage generally is best off being vendored still for the most part however.
  13. If the version you downloaded via torrent is several issues old, then the updater is grabbing all the patches and issues since then. Those can add up to a couple GB.

It's pretty easy to keep track of all 22 day jobs using a simple little spreadsheet.

Also, instead of doing them all at once, why not one server's worth per day each week? That is how I've been doing it (Monday - Liberty, Tuesday - Protector, Wednesday - Freedom, then Thursday is Virtue and my off servers of Justice Champion and Guardian). When a character reaches the 21 day mark, he then either goes to a new day job, or charges up an accolade for one week. Much easier to manage that way.

Then once various characters get all the day jobs (I have a couple that are close, and several who are at least close to getting all the ones available at their current level), then they will go through and top off all their powers.

    No new contact?

As an update (not that anyone is interested, I'm sure), here is evidence that it is possible to finish your starting contact before level 5. I just did it with a new AR/Ice Blaster, who I just made to be my Winter's Gift purchasing agent for this year's Winter Event (meaning she gets parked until the event after hitting level 10, since the Candy Keeper will not let you choose the recipe level when you buy the WGs.)

Level 4.82. No more missions from Azuria. And new new contact until 5. I even did some hunting on the way to the missions and took down a few extra Hellions inside (including everything inside the final mission, even though I didn't have to). Fortunately, I just had to pop a few extra Hellions, and then I was introed to Genevieve Sanders.

And I agree the Rune of Warding is awesome. It's the only temp power I got that I used repeatedly just because of how cool it looked! But overall I don't really care for Croatoa. The Tuatha hit hard, and I don't like all the hunt missions.
There is also a Day Job accolade called the Rune of Purification. It is identical in effect and abilities to the Rune of Warding. You get it by getting the Archeologist badge (Midnighter/Mortician).

Oh, and that Claymore that you get in Safeguard/Mayhem weapons raid only lasts 30 minutes game time.

    5th costume

    To the OP...

If you are on Virtue with a hero, I can fix you up with a set of Halloween salvage for free.

Also, VEATs can still make use of the Halloween salvage (for a total of 6 slots). However, the 6th slot is not editable. This means that whatever you have as your second slot (the first non-VEAT slot) will be forever what your 6th slot will be.

So before you unlock that 6th one, be sure that what you have in the second slot is something that you will never have need to change (like say a beach party costume or something like that).

After that, you can then change the second slot to something else.

Hopefully one of these days, they will update the tailor interface to make that 6th slot editable (perhaps that will be the day they give us the ability to have even more costume slots).

At level 15, go to Faultline and talk to Jim Temblor to start his arc.

Same deal with Striga, which is another cool zone--when you're level 20ish, go to Striga and talk with Stephanie Peebles. She has a story arc that gives out a super-handy temp power, the wedding band.
And if you don't talk to them first, then the first regular contact you talk to in that level range will send you to talk to them anyway before they will give you any real missions (likewise, at 25, the first contact in that range will make you go talk to Bower in Croatoa.)
  20. What is really satisfying is seeing them drop mere moments after the MoG animation goes off but before the protections kick in.

Because of that, I think I will name all PPs Tim...

Battle rages on and Tim gets low on HP.
Tim: (strikes fancy pose as MoG activates)
Me: I don't think so, Tim. Fireball
Tim is now ashes and eyeballs.

  22. For heroes, you sell to the Super Powered Field Trainers (or the various stores on your map. Both will be marked with a $.

For villains, either the stores or the Quartermasters.

And yes, it is most sensible (economically speaking) to skip TOs and wait until 12 before slotting any enhancers. At that point, you can go with DOs, IOs, or if you can score them cheap, low level SOs.

Additionally for heroes, starting at level 10, you can get Yin Talismen, which are low level SOs. To get those, you can buy them at Wentworth's, get a friend who has access to Yin's shop in Faultline to buy them for you, or team up with someone who is doing Penelope Yin's arc. Completing that gets all team members the Rescuer badge. And that gives access to Yin's shop.

Often (but not as a strict rule) each character will recieve a free respec with the launch of each new Issue, to account for any changes that issue makes to powers in the game.

And now for a few additional tidbits of unasked for info...

Vet Rewards: First veteran respec comes at the 9 month mark.

Patron Respec: This one actually stacks with the Freespec. This is the only time I have ever seen upon login that I have 2 unclaimed respecs available...

That confused me at first, and I was wondering if I had hit a very fortunate bug that made the most recent freespec stack with the previous one. Then I realized that it must be the freespec plus the patron respec.

Freespec upon new issue: This will be handed down to every character you currently have on your account at the time the respec is granted.

Therefore, I would recommend taking some time to come up with some alts that you might want to play, and create them really really soon. After all, Issue 16 is upon us and there should be a freespec given out with it. So any characters you make before now and then will not have to wait until you do the trial or get your 9 month reward.

Using Your Secondary Build: Just remember that when you use a respec of any type, it will only apply to one build. Therefore, if you want to respec the other build, you will need to burn a second respec.
