Best DPS is probably a Blaster, as both your primary and secondary powersets are Moar Damage!
However, Blasters are generally very squishy.
Scrappers and Brutes are pretty good at Melee DPs and being survivable. For better AoEs go Electric, Spines, Fire, and/or Shield Defense. Maybe a couple others, but the rest tend towards SingleTarget or a mix.
Regarding starting strong or not, well that's up to the different powersets within the ATs, and not the AT itself.

I'm not sure what Base Defense is, it's always at 0 as far as I know.
What happens is, say you're hit by a Smashing Melee attack. The defense that applies is the best of either your Smashing or your Melee defense.
If the attack was Smashing, Melee, and Energy, it'd be the best of one of those 3. And so on.

Oh geez, I don't remember. They've been deleted, regardless. I know I was messing around with a million variations on different elemental powered catgirls to no success until I wound up with a Rad/Sonic fender that I still have (and recently hit 50 on).

I have to admit I don't even run those missions on most characters and when I do it tends to be redside. -

Not as a MM, but I recently made a Trick Arrow myself...
Previously, I never thought they actually did anything. Maybe some single target debuffs or something. Wow was I mistaken. It's fun, too! The thing is, it's just not as flashy as other sets, so people don't notice it as much (or at least I never did). Still very good though. -

Did you last play after I19 came out, unlocked the Alpha slot, and took those rewards instead of merits?
There's a Hero 1 Blood sample salvage as part of the Lost Curing wand mission chain as well, so perhaps you're just confused. -

I have Stryke of Lightning.
Shes an Electric Melee/Ninjitsu Stalker.
Her in-game bio is short:
"Tamara Stryke was convicted of stealing a prototype teleportation suit, multiple homicide, and resisting arrest. Only the first is true, I swear!"
More detail- her parents worked for Crey. She was along one day, when something happened. Probably some heroes busting in or some such. She took her chance, hopped in some power suit, and ran. She wasn't expecting to be thrown in jail... nor her parents to be killed, nor the suit to somehow follow her. She got busted out in that massive jailbreak by Arachnos and worked for them for a long time. Too long. She eventually worked up the courage to head to Paragon. They seem to have forgotten the incident there, so she heroes around the place as needed.
