Thanks for the info, that helped things a lot. Powers look great and almost zero performance drop.
-
My sister recently started playing City of Heroes with me. Her computer is not too good with quality, so I had to tone down a few settings. Problem is, the power effects look like garbage. Like, when she shoots a fireball, all you see is the trail, and a pathetic explosion. Rain of Fire doesn't even show anything at all!
Where are the settings for power effects in the graphics menu? I've tried messing around with a ton of settings and I have no idea what would make powers look better. Even if her computer can't handle it, I would just like to know which setting it is so I can see for myself. -
FURRY! NO FURRAYZ IN MAH GAME GO AWAYZ NAO!!! SPANDEX MAKES ME FEEL MANLY, NOT GIRLY FURRY SUITS! AHHH!
Seriously though, I'd wait for the Mutant super-booster set to be released sometime. It seems thematic for monstrous options to tie-in with a "mutant" themed costume pack. Yes, right now I'm only speculating, but there is a pretty good chance it might be so. =P -
You have friends with you, therefore it is not dead.
As for the topic, I don't really think this would work out. There would have to be severe limitations to prevent your sidekick from becoming too overpowered and letting you solo with ease. After that, they'd probably be dumbed down so much that nobody would want to use them.
Just use your imagination. For example, me and my sister play together frequently. Her Hero is higher level than my Hero, so when we team together is almost like I'm her sidekick. She's the tough scrapper who goes and dukes it out with the enemies, and I'm the defender who makes her stronger and blasts from afar. If you have friends who like to duo, you could work it out like that. Even if you're the leader of an eight man team, they could all technically be your sidekicks. Just temporary. It could be like "Okay guys, Dr. Super-Evil is planning to destroy the Atlas statue! That is why I've called you all here, we've got to stop him! Follow my lead and we'll stop Dr. Super-Evil!"
Cliche', I know. But I'm just showing you how you can role play that type of thing out while you're playing the game regularly. Besides, having a real player that you can coordinate strategies with is far better than having some Fusionette AI run around blasting everything that moves. The most fun I have with my sister is when we come to a tough boss and we both talk about our strategy and how we're going to approach the situation. -
*checks feet* This man speaks the truth!

I guess I'll take a shot at your questions. =P
1. I can't give you an exact time, but it's not nearly as long as other games. For an hour a day, I would estimate about one or two months if you work at it. Obviously, it can take longer if you suffer from Altitis, but that's a different matter altogether. If you regularly complete missions and run task forces from time-to-time, it can go by fairly quickly. If you team-up a lot with other players, it can significantly reduce the time it takes.
2. While the game isn't about getting to level 50, there's a bit of fun stuff you can do when you get there. There's the Statesman Task force, the Lord Recluse strike force, Rikti Mothership raids, Hamidon Raids, and a couple other things. There's the Reichsman task force, but that's not very popular. Also, Ouroboros is a very fun place to go if you're level 50, since it lets you go back and play all the story arcs you may have missed. There are tons of badges associated with it, so my inner badge-hunter rejoices at that. =P
But really, the game is all about the journey, and not the destination. There's tons of fun stuff to do at any level, unlike other games where all the good stuff is at level 1,000,000 or something. Don't try and rush to 50, just take your time and enjoy the scenery. =P
3. Unfortunately, PvP is near-death as the changes in Issue 13 made most of the PvP'ers leave. If you really want to PvP, there's some occasional action on Freedom at night, but that's the most we've got. I don't know about other servers, but I've heard that PvP is dead on most of them. If you really want to PvP, then Freedom is your server choice.
4. While some servers have different "personalities" associated with them, they are all the same game. Go to the different server boards here on the forums, ask around, introduce yourself. Plus, there's nothing restricting you from making characters on multiple servers. Currently, I have characters on Freedom, Virtue, Guardian, and Pinnacle. Make some characters on different servers and find the one that's best for you! =P
I would say this is a good time to come back if you're thinking about doing so, since Going Rogue is just around the corner. I don't know when you left, so I can't really lure you in with any new goodies that have been added after you left. =P
Hope this helps!
P.S. If you need any other info, Paragon Wiki is a great place to get all your info, if you didn't already know about it. =D -
I'd be fine if it was because of technical difficulties or something like that. If the engine won't let it work for whatever reason, that just leave it be. However, if it's just because it's a female-only thing, that's just a bit silly. I mean, if you're going to do that, why even let there be any male and huge widows? Or even female wolf spiders?
If you're going to give us male widows, then at least give us coat tails to go along with them. I don't care if it looks retarded, it's for consistencies sake. My OCD demands consistency! -
It's like a shameless mockery of every demanding post ever made...
It's genius! I love it! -
Quote:I think he's just stating the the new E-mail is the closest we have to an actual bank system. It's limited, yes, but right now I'm glad we have something like it at all.Are you saying keep it all in e-mail? It's a nice idea, however, if they want to bank more than 20 recipies you will not be able to send e-mails out. I have tried to send out an e-mail, and it tells me I have over 20 e-mails and must delete one before I can send one.
-
You can transfer things via E-mail cross server. Things like Recipes, Salvage, and enhancements (Someone correct me if I'm wrong). The only limitation is that heroes can't give to villains and vice-versa.
-
Quote:No, no it hasn't. Only the more obvious names have been taken. Of course all the single word names are gone, because they're too obvious. Just do a little thinking and you can easily come up with a cool name. From the time of launch it has been increasingly difficult to get names for your characters.
Names I've recently claimed:
Desert Spear
Solemn Shadow
Amplified Assassin
Serpent Lance
It really isn't that hard. You don't have to break out a thesaurus, but if you do so it can lead to some very cool sounding names. Also, whenever it gets a little tough to find a name, I always use Seventh Sanctum's hero/villain name generator. It doesn't give you great choices, but it almost always gives me a better idea for possible names.
Your suggestion would cause a ton of confusion and make people frustrated. Even if it's a different font, it would still irk people that somebody else is running around with their name that they created. Plus, how would you tell people apart? I could run around named Captain Awesome in a different font and claim that I'm the original Captain Awesome. There would really be no way to prove that Captain Awesome is the original while Captain Awesome is not. -
Done? What does that mean? My toons are never done. They are never completed. I could get all the badges and completely maximize my build, but there will always be something else for me to do.
That's what I love about this game. You're never short on content. =P -
Veteran rewards are just that. Rewards for veterans. If joe-schmoe came by and bought them all in one sitting, they wouldn't be veteran rewards.
Veteran rewards are not game-breaking. A 63 month veteran has the same playing abilities as a brand new player. The only difference is costume pieces, and faster travelling. Game-wise, they are the same. Veteran rewards don't give you the fabled "I win" button after eleventy-billion months. They don't offer any perks that make you better than Mr. new-guy. Ohh, you can get to your mission faster. Cry me a river.
All they really do is give you costume parts, some of them aren't even very good. Kilts? Shoulder capes? I'll pass. I don't particularly like those. Veteran rewards are like the carrot and the end of the stick. They keep the player interested in staying subscribed. You want that awesome samurai armor? Stay subscribed for 18 months and it's yours! You want those wicked arachnos helmets? Stick around for 51 months. You see how it works?
Now, lets say we can buy them. I would immediately buy all the ones I want, especially the arachnos helmets. Now what? What incentive is there to keep me playing? I burn-out on all the fun stuff eventually, and then I leave. Guess what? When I leave, PlayNC loses money. And get this, if they lose money they can't pay for the game! Isn't that something?
Others have already said it, but they are really just a thank-you to everybody who's stuck with the game through thick and thin. For the people who didn't rage-quit during the great PvP-nerf. For the people who didn't leave at the first mention of ED. The people who have kept this game going with their subscription fees. They've been paying for years, so why not reward them? If you make them available for purchase, it's a monumental slap-in-the-face to all the true veterans here. Not because of the rewards themselves, but because what they've waited patiently for months for is now readily available to anyone with a big-enough paycheck. I guarantee you that people will leave if ever this were to happen.
TL;DR - No, veteran rewards are going to stay as they are. Quit your whining and wait in line like the rest of us. -
Me and my friend duo all the time, and higher level bosses aren't a problem if you use the right tactics. We're only level 7 at the moment, so if you're dying at level 19 with a friend, you're doing something wrong. Level 19 you should be able to solo bosses.
P.S. Inspirations are your friend. -
Yup, what Blitzkrieger said. This idea has been brought up hundreds if not thousands of times. Every time it has been shot down because of the many problems and challenges associated with it.
Short answer: Never going to happen. -
By cosmetic, I meant that it isn't really a big overhaul as much as it's fixing the search screen and putting in a new voting system. Which I guess would be considered a big change... forget I said that. =P
As for locking arcs, I would say it should stay locked unless some change invalidates the arc. Otherwise we would get scenarios like I mentioned above. Somebody getting Dev's choice and then purposefully destroying their arc while it still has Dev's choice. -
Quote:Yes yes yes a million times YES! This is a much needed change that has been ignored for too long! The star system is horribly flawed and desperately needs a change. I actually had an arc that got many five-star ratings (Becoming a villain, in my sig. *hint hint*) until it got hit by one lousy four star rating, dropping the average to four stars. After that, it was never touched again. It fell down the list somewhere into the hundreds page mark. I made some major changes and started over. It got one four star rating, and was never heard from again.First, I would ditch stars. The question you want the answer to when you ask a player to rate an arc is "did you like this?" "Three stars" is a very ambiguous answer to this question, and evaluating it depends on knowing what the player means by "three stars". A less ambiguous answer would be "Yes", "No", or "no opinion", and that's what the rating system should be built around. Also, people tend to just use stars as a proxy for "yes" or "no" anyway.
Point being, anytime your arc gets lower than five stars, it's basically the death sentence for the story. Anything lower than five stars gets dropped so far down in the pages that nobody will ever see it unless they specifically search for it. A simple like/dislike system would be far more efficient, and would prevent the eternal banishment of the four-star rating if your arc is halfway decent. =P
Quote:Second, I would make the default sort order for arcs a function of time since the arc was posted, time since the arc was last played, total number of plays, number of positive ratings, and number of negative ratings. Examples of these sort algorithms are available; the particulars should be tweaked to meet the needs of the MA. The goal is to keep good fresh content on the top of the list.
Quote:Finally, I would ditch DC/HoF as it currently functions. Any mechanism that requires that arcs be frozen against editing in a system that is frequently updated in a way that requires editing arcs to make them functional is simply not going to work.
Quote:Instead, I would award authors a badge and a free arc slot for getting a certain number of positive ratings on an arc, but not lock the arc, and not stick it on top of the default listing forever. I would create a separate listing for DC and guest author arcs, and create an alternate sort order that lists arcs by highest net rating for a "best of all time" list.
A separate listing for dev choice and HoV arcs would be great. Stop shoving those arcs in our face; we get it, they're popular.
The AE hasn't had any cosmetic changes in a long time. We've gotten bug fixes, exploit's closed, new maps, new groups and a ton of other stuff, but the main system remains the same. It's long-overdue for an update. -
You want to come up with nine different ways to hit somebody with a shield? So far we have three, shield hit, shield throw, and shield charge. Okay, give me six more.
Bigger shield hit?
Biggest Shield hit?
The ultimate shield smash of victory?
There's only so many different ways to swing your arm with a shield on it. Seriously, why are we even arguing about this? The set is never going to happen, plain and simple. As if we need more Captain America clones running around. -
In terms of content, there is no difference between the servers. They are all the exact same game. The only difference is the players who inhabit them.

The winning caption made me lol.

So I got my sister into playing City of Heroes with me. She's only 13 and new to the whole online gaming thing. Now, me and her are going to be playing together a lot, so she can get used to the game. Thing is, I do not want to have her start off on Freedom.
Simple question, I need a nice quiet server with a smaller population so I can help show her the ropes. Anybody got any suggestions? -
Add another disgruntled customer to the list...
I greatly resent the new market system. It took away everything I got used to with the old system and made even the simplest things like searching for salvage a chore.
My biggest complaint is how they removed the category searching. Like the OP said, I used to be able to go to "Salvage>Invention" and then just type the first three letters of whatever I was looking for. Now, I am forced to type out the full name of the salvage, which just makes things frustrating. -
Well, updating the drivers fixed the performance issues, but I still have to put my settings slightly lower than they were before. Though it still seems odd that my game stability was just fine until the patch.
-
I'm having the same exact problem. Before the latest patch, the game was running perfectly. Now, after the patch, unless I lower all graphics settings to the "crap" setting, I can't play.
I used to play with decent settings. Not maxed out, but certainly not low. Game performance has had a massive drop after the latest patch.
