Best server for younger players?
Virtue, just don't tell them about Pocket D. Villainside has a lot less idiots and we are nicer
Just for the taxibot tours to show her around... think it's Infinity they're on.
So I got my sister into playing City of Heroes with me. She's only 13 and new to the whole online gaming thing. Now, me and her are going to be playing together a lot, so she can get used to the game. Thing is, I do not want to have her start off on Freedom.
Simple question, I need a nice quiet server with a smaller population so I can help show her the ropes. Anybody got any suggestions? |
I've only played a limited amount on Freedom but it's literally night and day the number of jerks I've encountered there.
COH has just been murdered by NCSoft. http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...city-of-heroes
Also, don't forget about the Mentor Project stickied at the top of Player Help. Any number of the Mentors on various servers would be more than happy to help out if you are not available to mentor your sis.
id say victory but thats the only server i play on...i have tried a few others and victory has always had nice people and it fit well for my supergroup. I hope you both find a server that fits and welcome to your sister to the game
If you want a quiet server, I think Triumph or Liberty would fit the bill pretty nicely. Justice is pretty active and has a great channel full of people willing to help out (Justice United).
I would avoid Virtue. Everytime I go over there and need to go through D, I catch a lot of ERPing going on. Nothing your sis should be exposed to, IMO.
If you decide to try Justice, my husband and I would be glad to show you around.

My Characters
The Grateful Dude's kids play on pinnacle and seem to be doing just fine. Pick up groups are friendly and encouraging for the most part.
Piece of advice: be sure to have the profanity filter on if you join any chat channels on any server.
Save your lil sis from getting addicted to a MMO!
Little experience in low pop servers here, but Justice seemed very nice when played there. Started today on Champion, found some very nice people from the start, but only 2 hours of playtime is too early to tell especially for what you're looking for.
I agree with you on Freedom, my most played server. My negative experiences there are almost zero, but since there are so many people, you find a little of every kind of person, that might not be good for her.
As to the REAL reason I'll be leaving, I'm afraid it is indeed because Tamaki Revolution dc'd on me during a RSF.
Guardian and Pinnacle both have good communities with a large number of friendly helpful players. Both tend to have a pretty low number of obnoxious and/or rude players so she shouldn't run into very many players who'd treat her poorly. It's very rare that I meet a jerk on either server.

Infinity used to have a lot of reasonable and mature players. I don't play there much any more, but it probably still does.

So you think you're a hero, huh.
@Boltcutter in game.
As you can see, "all of them" kind of sums it up.

Send her my way. I'm signed up for the new Mentoring project that Stalemate's pushing, so I can make her my first mentee if you like. Freedom-based, but with the circles I run with, there's zero worry about any parental concerns. You know how the Horde runs. Other than all the jokes at my expense for faceplanting on the last mish of the Master runs, the teaming's productive, educational and slightly unserious.
If you're still looking for a non-Freedom server, I'd recommend Champion. Nice, laid back community there, smaller population, it's a lovely summer home for me when I feel itchy for a server transfer and want to visit people.

Not really. Remove Broadcast from chat window and avoid Pocket D, and you're pretty much golden, no matter what server you're on.

Edit:
Also forgot to mention to NOT look at any Bios on characters from Virtue. It is best avoided entirely for the younger crowd.
Triumph: White Succubus: 50 Ill/Emp/PF Snow Globe: 50 Ice/FF/Ice Strobe: 50 PB Shi Otomi: 50 Ninja/Ninjistu/GW Stalker My other characters

Another plug for Pinnacle.
And another advisement to keep her out of PinnBadges. It's not a bad channel, but some of the topics get a little.....risque to put it mildly.

While I love Virtue, redside some players take their rping kinda seriously and sometimes say inappropriate things for a pre-teen (not that they're being rude or anything, I find people there very polite, only had one negative experience there and it was blueside and nothing related to being inappropriate for a kid). Anyway, Pocket D would already be a criteria for not going there imho. |
Any other server is fine though - Freedom can be a bit overawing for a youngster though. I find players on Victory and Guardian very helpful. Hope she has a brawl whichever server you choose for her. GL
There is always a lot to be thankful for, if you take the time to look. For example, I'm sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt. ~Author Unknown
Any.
I find Freedom very freindly and the broadcast spamming idiocy in Atlas will be just like Middle School. I started on Liberty, which is OK, but I prefer the busier/city feel of Freedom.
Keep the profanity filter on, I guess. She's 13, not six.
Why avoid Freedom?
"It's full of jerks" - so is the world, so is any school you go to, any competitive sports game you attend. TV is full of jerks. I even heard one on the radio the other day.
Turn off global chat and stick to SG chat and team chat and you're golden. If you're in the same room - turn off chat altogether and view more of your screen.
I used to duo with my daughter and honestly it doesn't matter what server you are on if you don't interact with people. Was good times. Now she is into vampire books and movies, is gutted there's no more Veronica Mars and lives on Facebook. Kids eh.
I once played with a Virtue sewer team where the three leaders RPed mobsters all the way through. Hilarious. Everyone should catch some of that. Not so much the naked catgurl frolicking but you know.. parental discretion is the better part of valour.
