Just a random thought, but there is that quick scene in the trailer where they are walking across a sunlit glade as a wave of shadowy corruption sweeps up behind them. There are also a few scenes that seem to show two winged creatures, one light, one dark. It's possible that she's simply possessed. Not that this means they can't kill her, just that there *may* be something going on besides simply going over to the Dark Side.
-
That is incorrect. If you have *any* crab powers in either build, the BOTH builds have the backpack. Part of the problem is that the backpack is a weird, "not really" costume item - it's actually a weapon option, like the equally unchangeable Blood Widow claws. In this case, it's a weapon that happens to take up the Back slot in your costume. Since there is no way to link costumes to builds at the moment, there's no way to have a separate option. And once the backpack shows up, it simply erases whatever was in that slot - the game apparently isn't coded to "remember" what was there before the backpack took over.
Also, I'm pretty sure that there's a known issue that if you take Crab powers and then later totally respec out of them, on every build, the backpack still remains. If that is correct, then once you go Crab, you can't go back. -

I still want a self-only power, that has no FX or function other than to cause any SB applied to my characters to expire instantly. I hate that power.

Quote:I've tried Poison. I even slogged through on a Thugs/Poison to level 26, and that's supposedly one of the best sets to pair with poison. I hated it. I guess I just don't have the right mindset/playstyle to be able to manage it, but even loading that character up felt like a chore. It's not even that the thugs died all the time. I'm not sure they did, other than the Arsonist, who practically summons in dead. I've got a Ninja/Trick Arrow mastermind that just mows through their own minions, to the point that a friend has nicknamed the character DNA for Disposable Ninja Army. But the Ninja is, to me, far more fun to play. The set nobody ever remembers is Poison. It's great enemy debuff and decent ally buff, which is a really good combination for Masterminds.
Part of the problem was the absolute single-target nature of Poison. If I picked out the only Boss and got the first shot, great, I'd cripple them beyond hope. And then get one-shotted myself by the melee LT that was standing out of sight the moment I told the thugs to attack. There's also the fact that I wanted my character to be a specific origin and backstory, and running around spitting venom on people just didn't fit. I wanted a rogue chemist, and I ended up with Toad. -
Quote:I haven't experienced it since the patch. But the notes specifically state that the clones will no longer stop spawning. And with the two characters that fought him, I didn't have the DPS to kill the clone *and* do any significant damage to Trapdoor before the next one popped up. On my Controller, I only beat him at all by dragging him down the hallway - if I stopped to kill a clone, by the time it was gone he'd have gained nearly all of his health back. Knocking him into the lava wasn't an option for either of my characters that did complete this, due to their total lack of knockback. As one is a Mastermind (and zombies are flammable) and the other a Plant Controller who ran in with the Flytrap active, pulling him into the lava wasn't really an easy option. And no, I can't use the veteran staff attacks, because I won't have them for at least another year.Killing the clones is still totally an option. Pulling or knocking him into the lava also helps.
This is seriously one of the EASIEST EB fights in the game to solo.
People complaining about are DOING IT WRONG.
That is not petulance, it's a fact.
As I said, I managed to finish the fight, but that was in it's "broken" state, and I only did so by methods which are no longer apparently viable. (If you can't one-shot the clones, killing them isn't viable if it gives him time to heal back all the damage you've done. Which, on most of my characters, it probably would.) I don't expect them to change the fight, other than to remove any other "not working as intended" solutions. However, I don't plan to attempt it again, either. -
And as a further update, the problem has disappeared. As far as I can determine, there was an unspecified problem with my ISP in my immediate area. Or so I gather from the fact that the last time I called tech support, I was directed to an automated message advising customers in "My City" that there had been a recent unscheduled maintenance, and that DSL customers could experience ongoing connectivity problems until they power-cycle their DSL modems and all attached networking hardware.

Quote:In my case, I don't come to the forums to complain about how hard the mission is. If I think it really isn't something I can manage, I usually follow one of three paths - I'll autocomplete the mission (or auto-fail in the case of the ones that need X number of people to click on something before the timer runs out.) If it's not a Story mission, I'll simply drop it, and remember to avoid it in the future. Or I'll set it aside and outlevel the heck out of it, and come back to curbstomp the EB when I'm five levels higher than they are.My response in these situations, at least from my perspective, was quite reasonable: I acknowledged that some foes or missions are too difficult to solo, so I asked for help. Apparently what I was supposed to do was come to the forums and complain about how the entire game isn't easy for all my characters... or something?
Look, I know people like to be able to accomplish things on their own, but let's think about this realistically for a moment. Some enemies are, by design, so hard that you can't take them down by yourself, and no matter what server you play on, there are always hundreds of other players online who can help you...
I mean, not to put two and two together or anything, but doesn't it seem a bit unreasonable to refuse to ask for help?
My friends list currently has two, possibly three active players. I have no desire to expand that at the moment. Just about all my attempts at joining PUGs have been, at best, less than enjoyable. (I seem to have a special talent for joining groups led by Build Nazis, or immature slime puddles that think that the custom "hip thrust" macro is the coolest thing ever.) And my playstyle isn't compatible with most of the PUGs I've tried - my builds aren't uber, and I'll often actually take the time to read through the mission dialogue and clues. (Most of my Masterminds have personal attacks, and perhaps three characters out of almost fifty have Hasten. And one of those is a cheetah.)
I don't, however expect every mission to be solo-friendly. I fully recognize that I'll never take part in a Hamidon raid, and that I'll never attempt most of the TFs. However, I DO object to the idea that entire game systems should be team only. For the Alpha slot, this has turned out to not be the case - the intro arc can be done solo, even by my less than ideal characters. (Honestly, I find Trapdoor and the Honoree to be far less annoying than most of the Freedom Phalanx. Although I do wish that the portals had a population cap - thirty or forty Rikti from a single portal seems a little unnecessary.) My concern with future Incarnate slots is that they will be locked behind a mandatory TF, rather than a mission arc. I played another MMO that followed the "You must be at least this uber to enter Tier 3" model, and I pretty much quit playing it when I hit that point.
The simple fact is, I don't want to team up. When I hit something I can't solo, it's usually easier to simply drop the mission than to go and make a team for the sole purpose of getting past it.
*Edit* I haven't tried the arc since the recent patch though. The only way I got past Trapdoor was to pull him away from the clones, or focus on killing the clones until they stopped and then finishing Trapdoor. Since neither is apparently an option now, it appears I'll be stopping with just the two Incarnates. Even most of my melee characters aren't optimized builds, and trying to kill an EB with Hyper Regen is just frustrating, even on a high DPS character. -
Quote:It's too difficult to find anything worthwhile. The system is clogged with farms, dead farms, and invalid farms, along with a handful of actual missions that broke at some point after the author no longer cared. The rating system is a cruel joke, and is utterly pointless as it currently stands - it's way too easy for the Ratings Mafia to blow good arcs off the top listings, and the last time I paid attention, it looked like they'd launch deliberate attacks on stories that might actually get good ratings. (I looked at the listings, and a mission with 10 five star ratings had gotten sixty ratings an hour later, and the extra fifty were all apparently one star.)For those of you that do find and play actual story arcs in the AE, thank you. But for the many that either don't, or have stopped. What is the biggest reason that keeps you away from the AE building? Can't find the good arc from all the farms and junk? No chances for purples/Incarnate shards outside of Dev Choice arcs? Not really aware of AE at all?
And a second question, what's something that *would* bring you into the AE building to try out an arc?
The mission "tags" are equally pointless, since anyone can assign any tag to any mission, and I suspect some people either click things at random or are deliberately trying to cause a mess. Or both.
There's also the fact that due to the ongoing nerfs, MA critters have to be stronger than normal just to award the same XP as any random street minion. The tickets are a pain to deal with, due to the low per-mission cap and the relatively low total cap on how many you can have at once. The ticket store is a clunky mess. The last time I attempted to use it, the store also had a nasty habit of closing itself more or less at random.
And finally, even aside from all the farms, the quality of the missions was overall pretty low. It would take many, many tries to find one I actually liked, and often that author wouldn't have any other stories.
There's also the fact that (much to my surprise) I now have two Incarnate characters, and MA arcs don't drop shards or purple recipes. Granted, I've gotten about four Purple recipes in the last two years, but a slim chance is better than none. MA arcs also don't produce Tip contacts, although I can't claim I really spend a lot of effort gaining the alignment merits.
In short, dealing with AE is too much effort for too little return, and AE is mutually exclusive with several other types of loot/reward that I'd currently much rather have access to. -
Speed Boost. Seriously, I can't think of a more overhyped power. How many other single powers can reliably get a player kicked for NOT having it on their character? The only other competitor would probably be Mind Link for Widows.
-
Additional information, assuming any of this has anything to do with what's going on. The antivirus program was running when I collected this info, but normally is NOT running when I'm in CoH. (To be more accurate, it had spent the last hour and half attempting to download a 30Mb update file.)

Since somewhere around December 7th, I've been having serious problems with my Internet connection in MMOs. Lag, rubberbanding, and frequent "server not responding" messages that can last up to several minutes. I've called my ISP, and run the tests they requested. They assure me my connection is fine, and yet the problem remains.
I have run all my anti-whatever scanners, and found nothing. (Which only means that if there is something, it is smart enough or new enough that the scanners can't see it.) However, when I am not actually running an MMO, the network connection is quiet - there is nothing talking to the Internet that shouldn't be doing so.
I am connected to the Internet via an ethernet router, which is then connected to a DSL modem. The router also has WiFi capability, and I have checked: my security settings are still in place, and no unknown devices are connected to my network that I can see. (And yes, I changed the default usernames, passwords, and network names before I ever allowed the router to connect to the DSL modem when I originally set it up.) I have also tried cycling the power on both the router and the DSL modem.
In-game, I have run the /netgraph command, and it shows exactly what I'm experiencing. My connection is good, except for massive spikes of lag where the game simply stops talking to the server for up to several seconds at a time.
I do have a firewall. I do not intend to turn it off, because I think it would be hard to see if it makes a difference through the flood of incoming virus and botnet attacks. (Every article I've read points out that a computer that doesn't have at least minimal firewall protection will be automatically scanned and attacked in a matter of seconds.) I have an anti-virus program, but it is NOT allowed to run in memory resident mode. I load it only when I wish to run a scan. The only memory resident programs that are allowed to run that I am actually aware of are the firewall, and driver components for my sound and video card. And DragonAgeUpdater, because I haven't finished the game yet and haven't taken the time to figure out how to turn that piece off. (Since it's from EA, I assume turning it off will cause the game to flip out and refuse to allow me to use the DLC I have installed.)
The only change I've made to my system or drivers in the last month or so was an attempt to update the drivers for my HP printer on Wednesday. And since the network connectivity issues started at about the same time, I have actually rolled the system back to a Restore Point from December 1st, which was well before I attempted to update the drivers.
My knowledge of network connection and setup is limited, and I've pretty much done everything I can think of. I still have no idea what is going on, or even where to start to figure out what the problem might be. -
I know it's supposed to be given out on the 8th. But does that mean it went out at midnight? Or is it coming out later in the day? Or does anyone even know, since this isn't something the devs normally do? I'm just curious how this is going to work.
-
No, it isn't. I mostly play solo. The option to socialize is there *IF* I wish to do so, which I generally do not. However, I don't expect to be able to solo Task Forces, nor do I expect solo missions to be quite as fast as a full team. (On the other hand, I've been on full teams that weren't much faster than I can solo.)
The Incarnate unlock arc can be done solo. In fact, on the scale of "stupidly difficult Elite Boss encounters," I'd consider even the Honoree mission to be less frustrating than most of the places where a Freedom Phalanx member shows up. My villain finished the Incarnate slot arc, and the only part where I had help was the actual fight with the Honoree. I'm fairly sure that if I did it again I could manage it without help.
Immediately afterwords, I did Dark Watcher's "Horrors of War" mission where you have to fight the Manticore Automaton, and after about the tenth hospital run, I ended up just auto-completing the mission. Explosive Arrow does terrible things to my zombies, and as a /Dark Miasma Mastermind there isn't really all that much I can do about it. Considering that no matter what I hit him with first, Fake Manticore could pretty much ignore the first few debuffs I hit him with. -
Quote:Conceptual: I don't want my characters included. Many of my villains aren't actually going to wander around punching random heroes in the face "just because." And I, personally, don't like things like The Armory from that other game - I find the idea of other people pawing through my character list to be deeply repulsive, which is why I don't use things like City of Info Tracker or CoH Faces. And which is one of the reasons that *all* of my characters are hidden from the character database in the other two games I play that currently have such a feature.Really? I tried to think of any significant negatives, and I couldn't come up with any. Can you elaborate?
Oh, and I greatly appreciate the politeness. :-)
Additionally, the ad-libs nature of Newspaper/radio missions means that my character will quite likely end up working with X group, that I've already decided is the mortal enemy of that character.
And, as you pointed out, some characters are simply silly and/or have names I do not care for. When I see such characters in-game, I have actually /ignored the player on that basis alone. -
Gravity/psi Dominator. I made the character with a concept of basically being a black cat - literally, causing bad luck. I was sort of trying to do something similar in concept to the Teen Titans animated version of Jinx, and those were the powersets that seemed to fit. (Since both involve the enemy falling down a lot, and Gravity has powers where heavy things tend to fly around and hit you in the face.) The trouble is, the powers never really seemed to fit, and Propel is actually a stunningly bad power for a Dominator, due to the stupidly long animation and the lack of Containment.
And my original concept never really seemed to work, and I kept trying to change it to find something that did. In fact, this character is the main reason I no longer allow myself to purchase renames - I probably paid for at least six before I realized what I was doing and how much I was spending doing it. Now the character has a huge pile of badges, and yet is still only about level 15. I claim I don't care about badges, and yet a character I never actually play is taking up a slot because I can't seem to bring myself to delete them. Honestly, I regret not exiling them to another server with the others when the free transfers were available.
Demons/Thermal Mastermind. I have a concept and a costume that I'd really like to use, but I can't think of a name that fits properly. (And that isn't already taken.) In fact, I got so fixated on naming this one character that for several months I was unable to make any *other* characters, either. I still don't have a name for the character, and given my "no more paid renames" rule, I can't see any point in playing them. And yet I can't bring myself to abandon the concept either. So I've got a level one character taking up a slot on the off chance I ever think of a decent name for the character. -
Quote:Even if that is true, the current functionality is a problem. You attack NPCs. Your pets spaz out and start running around at random, either to use melee attacks on targets across the room or to flee from any kind of persistent AoE attack. You use Follow to bring them back, and they stop doing anything for five seconds. They start attacking again, and immediately resume going berserk. You use Follow, and they stop doing anything for five seconds. The fact that Follow turns off their AI may be working as intended, but it is compounding the current issues with their AI. The unpredictable and uncontrollable AI is what I was referring to, and what I hope the devs are going to bother to fix.No. The delay in switching to the stance to Follow was to prevent MMs from abusing Bodyguard mode. It would have allowed MM's to have complete control over whom their pets attack and have the nigh invulnerabiltu of BG mode. When Bodyguard mode was first announced, I saw that exploit right off the bat. The devs anticipated the craftiness of the players.

Quote:In my case, because I enjoy the general gameplay and the costume creator. I tried joining PUGs, and even an actual super group when I first started playing. I found PUGs less than likable because I seemed to constantly run into people who were bad players, or actual build fascists. And I ended up setting all my characters to hidden from my own SG, because I quickly got fed up with the other members *demanding* that I come team with them, regardless of what I was already doing. (Quite often, they didn't even have the courtesy to phrase it as a request. Not "Oh, hey fellow team member. Are you busy? Would you like to help me out with this?" No, instead I got "You're in our SG and we want two more people for this team. Get over here now.") Now all my characters are in one of my solo SGs, and all of them are hidden from searches as soon as they are made.
One of the facets of an MMO is that sometimes, believe it or not, content is designed for teams, and requires players to be online to run that content. I don't agree with the notion that everything should be solo-able. I think this point has been addressed already. Why would somebody play an MMO if they were not interested in forming a team and playing with other people.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I play MMOs because I like something about the game enough to tolerate the fact that there are other people logged in at the same time. I play *despite* the massively multiplayer part, not because of it. Of the three MMOs that I spend any time playing, none of them particularly require teaming most of the time. I don't PVP, and I don't have any interest in "raid" style content. In fact, the main reason I'd stopped really playing the zillion pound gorilla of MMOs a good six months before I actually quit was that it became more and more apparent that there really wasn't much to do at the level cap if you didn't want to sign away your soul to a hardcore Raiding guild.
Now, for the original poster's complaint about Trapdoor - I did this mission solo, on a Necromancy/Dark Miasma Mastermind that is *not* a Tankermind and that actually has a significant number of slots devoted to personal attacks. As soon as a clone popped up, I'd order my zombies to take it out. I think the whole fight might have taken three minutes, and I believe I lost one zombie.
The fight with the Honoree originally looked pretty intimidating, so I did ask a friend for help. However, by the time they got done with what they were doing and made it to me, I'd cleared out both of the portals and had just finished of Holtz. Alone, I think the worst that might have happened is that I might have had to make a hospital run to restock on the various purple inspirations. (Honoree does have a nasty habit of trying to stunlock you.)
Since then, I've been playing that character solo, and have only managed about five shards. They have a bit higher drop rate than purples, so I might actually be able to make one of the basic boosts in a month or two. Building towards the higher pieces solo would be quite tedious, if that was my only goal. (I rarely attempt to join any kind of Task Force, beyond whatever it takes to unlock the costume pieces for the ones that have some.) I went to the trouble of unlocking the alpha slot mostly just to see how hard it was, and because the basic shards are essentially free extra loot once you've done so. I have no intention of doing the Apex or Tin Mage task forces. If future Incarnate slots require doing a TF to unlock, I won't hesitate to skip them. -
Is it possible to use this program without the online aspect? I'd like to use it to export a few characters as Mids data, but I have absolutely no intention of posting them online.

Quote:Well, if they won't get rid of the cowardice code, it *would* be nice if they could fix it so that critters don't run so far that they actually despawn. I was in a pick up group trying to take out Deathsurge the other day, and he made a break for it. He ran around for a few minutes, came perilously close to a couple of the various Arbiter Drones, then ran up the hill towards the generator station and vanished. Much swearing was heard. (Putting the critters on a leash and moving the cowardice trigger point would both help a great deal. Giant Monsters should not flip out the moment someone flings a Seeker Drone at them.)Darkest Night is a continual 'auto-hit' on the critter. If a critter is being continually and successfully attacked, but their attacks keep missing, their AI tells them to run, i.e., they failed their morale check. This is part of the whole 'fleeing critters' problem. Castle has said as much. Castle has also said that the morale check is not going away, and so, in such instances, the critter will flee, however, he's looking into the ridiculous lengths a critter will go to get away (such as fleeing past visual draw distance and aggro and then walking back un-aggroed).

Quote:Do not want. Aside from the fact that I can't really see the point of crippling my characters for no real gain, there's the fact that almost every single one of my characters is a demon, dragon, plant person, werewolf, cyborg, obvious mutant, or is in some other way pretty much incapable of having a "secret" identity. (Beast Boy: "But... take off my mask? What about my secret identity?" Raven: "What secret identity? You're green!") Also, aside from a very small selection of heroes who basically transform into someone else (Captain Marvel/Shazam and the Hulk) most heroes still have full access to their powers all the time. Bruce Wayne doesn't actually become a klutz, Superman and Spiderman still have their super strength, and the Martian Manhunter is still a powerful shapeshifting telepath.Has CoX ever considered giving players secret identities? this is what i'm proposing:
- create a new costume slot which only has access to civilian costume pieces.
- lock that toon out from primary and secondary powersets, leaving only inherent such as sprint, rest, brawl...
- players in their secret identities would get tips in the day job locations
this would allow it to be totally optional whether players wanted to have a secret identity or not, but with the incentive of tip missions. also, it would create a new vulnerability for characters. can you imagine walking down the streets of Atlas Park as a civilian and being attacked by Hellions - only to emote into your costume and do battle? so cool!
Anyway, as others have pointed out, the game allows you to do this now. Make a suitably boring costume, and use the Walk power. If you *really* want to cripple yourself with a level drop, go ahead and get an Ouroboros mission that maxes out at level five, that way every enemy in the game has a good chance to one-shot you as you stumble past. -
Quote:Or it means they were aware of the bug, and trying to fix it without completely scrapping whatever code had been written for the previous version of Inherent Fitness. They were trying to correct the underlying problem, and whatever they were doing wasn't working. At some point, they either had to scrap the existing power, or someone came up with a different way to deal with the problem. Either way, the result was that they had to totally delete the version of the power that didn't work, and replace it with a completely different system that (from a player's point of view) does exactly the same thing.Deduction my dear Watson.
Ok so they have been actually working on the Kheldians issue since he reported it some three months ago but never tripped over the fact that inherent fitness was the root of the problem where the fix for it would have been on that first test patch a week ago, not the faulty version and the critical searches to fix the problem ensuing...?
So either this means that they are inept OR they have been paying the guy lip service and not really looking into the problem much with many more things on their plate what with i19 and all.
My deductive reasoning tells me they didn't pay much mind to that particular beta player. They sure fixed it in a hurry once they realized the ramifications of that bug and had to readdress any stone left unturned to solve it, so I rule out inept.
What does it tell you? Inept or Ignored?
I'm not even sure why I'm bothering to point this out though. There really doesn't seem to be any purpose in trying to discuss this with you, since you're clearly not listening to anyone who disagrees with you. -
I've never bothered to find out how the GMs in CoH handle that. (IE, you invite a guildmember, he ransacks your storage and quits.) I know of two other MMOs that have a standing policy that amounts to "Tough luck. Next time, be more careful with your storage permissions, and pay more attention to who you invite. This is essentially an internal management problem for your guild, and is neither a bug nor abuse. Therefore, there's nothing the GMs will do about it."

Quote:No no, sir you are mistaken. Your recent threads are only composed of definitions of spam. I'm stating why it is not spam. Thats different then myself posting the following:
SPAM - Processed Pig Meat
SPAM - Mass amount of junkmail
Heh, weird I did not see that in my past posts.Quote:Man I just can't pinpoint a definition of SPAM, maybe I need to look harder
Whatever. At this point it's clear you either aren't reading what people are telling you, or you're willfully ignoring it. Either way, I'm done trying to have a conversation with you. -
Quote:You're still arguing over the definition, and not the intent. Spamming is a verb, and when people say that you're spamming, they generally mean you're rapidly sending out useless information. (Repeating the same thing in chat twenty five times.) However, it can also mean "the act of sending out spam."Although I am certainly glad you agree one message is not spamming
Spam is a noun, and in this case is being used to refer to "an unsolicited and undesired communication." (It's also a potted meat product, sort of like a giant hot dog in a can, but that's not the definition we're dealing with here.) In this game, a spam is any tell, invite, or email that a person didn't want to receive.
When you send out a wave of blind invites to characters you've never met, you are spamming them. In the same way that an email junkmailer is spamming people when they send out a thousand spam mails, even though each target only sees one of those.
And part of the reason you have a hard time keeping your SG "full" is the way you're inviting people. You try to recruit anything with a pulse. Many of those people that do join will look around, decide they don't like what they see, and quit. You *will* have better results if you stick to people that you've actually met in-game. Really, WHY would you want to invite random people you've never met?
