And by the way, if you haven't already bought it yet, I'd advise getting him the $1.99 Freedom sale purchase that's going on through the end of the month, then Going Rogue. That will give him another month of paid play and another $5 worth of Paragon Points to spend. But you have to get the $1.99 first. (And since there's no way of gifting those serials, you'd basically have to create his account for him, give him the userID and PW, and tell him to change it.)

And to note, he will still have access to Praetoria if he doesn't subscribe. Which is what you said he was largely interested in. Praetoria and Incarnates are not the same thing.
Indeed, given how long it can take some people even to get to 50, he could be quite happy for months playing the free game, and only end up subscribing when he gets to 50 and wants to do the Incarnate content. -
Funny thing about common vs. uncommon Trial salvage: "uncommon" salvage is actually more common than "common", because there's something that moves particular trials a notch up on the rolls table (I can't remember whether it's number of players or something else) and makes it more likely that you'll roll uncommon than common.
-
Is there any way that we can buy this as a gift for somebody else?
-
I would be inclined to suggest completely uninstalling the game, and eradicating all trace of it from your hard drive (and possibly registry). Then download the new NCSoft Launcher and use that to install the game fresh.
-
Yes. You'll be able to pick him, and one other character, to play. The others will still be there, lurking on your account against the day you should decide to subscribe again or buy or otherwise earn additional character slot unlocks to unlock them.

Quote:I wrote a Bots/Dark guide way back when that's laughably out of date in some respects now but still contains relatively sound advice in general. You may need to tweak your build some to tighten things up; you can ask advice in the Masterminds forum. If you took the blaster rifle powers because they're neat, I'd advise you to drop them and focus on slotting your bots and your secondary. You don't need the Repair power either with the awesome heal you've got in Twilight Grasp.Ok thanks
I think im gonna head over to the MM forums and see why I cant seem to even solo -1 missions (while being the same equivelant to one superhero or whatever) without having some major problems (bots dying, and getting overrun)
Also, most important of all, read and use Sandolphan's Mastermind numpad bind guide. Masterminds become about 300% more effective when you've got a good set of binds to run them strategically instead of having to click here and there on the screen. -
While I don't know that I'd say Pinnacle is dead dead, I do have to admit that it's a lot harder than it used to be to find people of my own level around when I'm doing a pickup team. It used to be that I could /search and find a zillion people of my own level that I could drop a tell to and say, "Hey, want to join a Level <X> mission team?" Now I find myself in a similar position to the OP from time to time. (Part of it is probably that a lot of people are off playing their still-relatively-shiny-and-new Praetorian characters, and hence don't show up in the /search screen from the hero side.)
This is not a case of me wanting someone else to run something. This is a case of me running something (and I run PUGs frequently enough that I wrote a guide on how to do it well (see signature), thank you very much) and having a hard time finding enough people to fill the team.
Now, to be fair, this is somewhat ameliorated by the way that sidekicking/exemplaring and difficulty setting have improved—I can invite as many lower- or higher-level people as I want without having to worry about being able to pair them with mentors, and higher-level people still get XP and access to powers 5 levels ahead so I don't have to feel embarrassed about asking them to join a lowbie team. And I can fine-tune the spawn levels enough that I don't have to worry about filling the team to get as many mobs as I can handle. But it still makes me long for the halcyon days when I had to narrow /search parameters down considerably to keep from hitting that 50-character limit—and makes me hope that CoH Freedom will bring more life back to the servers in general. -
Also, don't worry too much if you miss some content. Indeed, it's pretty much impossible NOT to. But apart from being able to make other characters to go back and play through it, you can also go "back in time" to experience it through the Ouroboros flashback system.
-
One thing to note is that if you buy GR before Freedom launches, it will include two additional character slots along with the free month of gameplay time and everything else.

Quote:You shouldn't be. NCSoft has vowed it will never delete anyone's characters no matter how long they've been out of the game. (It makes sense, financiallyafter all, any one of those people might someday want to come back and give them more money.)Hello:
I haven't played CoH in almost 3 years... I logged in after all this time, and my level 50 Illusion Controller is still here (I was surprised).
Quote:A lot has changed since I left some time ago. I have CoH (Rouge) and wanted to know some things.
Quote:Is level 50 still the cap, or are there additional levels?
Quote:Do they have guilds or something similar (I play on the freedom server)?
Quote:If level 50 is the level cap, what else is there to do in the game once you max out?
Quote:I was on when Atlas Park was attacked by something... well I have no idea what it was exactly. That's something to to me. what's that all about?
Quote:There have definitely been some changes to the game since I played last. If some of you would be willing to fill in some gaps, it would be much appreciated.
Strongly suggested: go to ParagonWiki and read through the descriptions of what changed with each new content Issue. It's a great way to get an overview of everything that's been done to the game since you last played regularly. -
The best way to get Shards, for what it's worth, is just to adventure. There's a chance of getting a shard whenever you fight even-con or better mobs (I think it's even-con or better, it might be blue or better), whether you're exemplared or not. There's a better drop chance with bosses, so one of the best ways to rack up a few is to do the Imperious Task Force since there's a higher-than-average number of bosses in that.
And the trials are a great way to build up salvage, Incarnate XP, and threads to use for constructing bits of salvage you don't have. As well as earning Astral and Emperean (sp?) merits that can be used for other things. But one thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is running the Weekly Target Task or Strike Force. It's a great way to get a Notice of the Well once a week--and once you've crafted your third-tier Alpha (well, two third-tier Alphas, since you need a second third-tier to combine for a fourth-tier), any subsequent Notices you get can be broken down into 40 Threads, which equals two common Incarnate salvage items. -
Does this mean they finally fixed that bug where other team members don't show up in the same map with you?

Quote:That's not a history, that's a fragment. It doesn't tell where the Shard came from, where the "People of Paragon" who live there came from, or what the whole story encapsulated in those Shard TF poems means.Rularuu the Ravager menaced Paragon City back in the roaring '60s. Luckily, before his interdimensional plundering could properly commence, Rularuu was defeated by a group of superheroes. In an ironic coup de grace, the Midnight Squad trapped Rularuu in an otherworldly prison called the Shadow Shard, where hes been stewing ever since. There is some rumor that the Dream Doctor and Rularuu are connected somehow.

Inspired by this guide, I got an Electric/Shield scrapper from level 22 up to level 45 over double XP weekend. Totally sweet! I especially like the way that most of the Shield powers really don't need much slotting. It meant I could six-slot just about everything I took from my primary, and still have some slots left over to toss around into things like True Grit that can provide a little additional benefit.
One thing that's worth mentioning, and that you might want to update the guide to cover, is that in I21 Super Jump is getting a tier-5 power that's yet another short-distance teleport damage splash attack. So a Shields/Electric super-jumper might be able to put together a triple whammy mob-murdering attack chain. -
Quote:One thing you can do that doesn't seem to have been touched on in this thread yet is go to the Team tab and type in a "LFG status message". This is a message that shows up to the right of your name in the LFG window. You could put something like "Not interested in higher-level missions right now", or "Don't want to miss out on content" and people would know your situation. Are forming groups all about the exp in this game? Because I honestly would be more concerned if I couldn't find someone for a certain mission than having the tools to do it in the first place. I've grouped once in this game, and it was a rewarding experience... but not because of the exp.
(And for that matter you can set it so that people can't invite you to team at all.)
I go into some more detail about team search window etiquette in the first link in my signature below. -
He might have missed out on the 400 points from July, but he can still sub and get the 400 points from August, September, etc.

Quote:As I said above, that entry has absolutely nothing in it about the Shadow Shard's history. Which is why I asked about it here.
-
Quote:The Shadow Shard wiki entry is mainly concerned with what's in it and how to get about it. The Rularuu entry has a bit more, but only fragments (in more ways than one). I'd like something a bit more detailed than that.
-
Has the history of the Shadow Shard ever been laid out coherently? All you really get from doing the Task Forces is a lot of poetry that is kind of open to interpretation and doesn't really say a whole lot.
Did the Shadow Shard used to be another counterpart of earth, like Praetoria, and then something blew it to pieces? How did humanity survive it getting blown to pieces? Why are there all those suns and stuff?
I'd love to read a complete explanation. -
Quote:When have they ever released a new powerset each month? When have they even (regularly) released a new one every six months? They take time to develop and test. We'll probably get the new powersets strictly with new expansions and issues, because that update cycle allows plenty of time for development and testing. If we get 2 to 3 power sets every six months, then at most that's 1 new set every two months. My point is, if a powerset costs 800 points and we get 400 points a month and they release a new powerset each and every month, we can never have them all without spending more money on it.
Quote:I'm not saying that is going to be the case because I, like everyone else have no idea at the pace new content will be added to the store.
What I am saying, is we need to wait and see - blindly saying eventually we can get it all for free if we are patient enough is not necessarily true and should not be advertised as such. -
Quote:I kind of wonder about that, reallythe "not trying to save a sinking ship" thing. There seem to be a lot fewer players around now than there were a couple years ago before I let my sub lapse. It tends to be a lot harder to build a team than it used to be on the less-populated servers. I also notice that the subscriber figures for City of Heroes on MMOData haven't been updated since 2009, at which point it was on a definite (if gradual) downward trend and only had about 125,000 subscribers.PPS- This game has a unique F2P model because out of all the F2P games, it is in a unique position. It's not being born as F2P. It's not trying to save a sinking ship where the subscription model failed. It's got a strong core model based on subscriptions, and they want to give more to those subscribers at the same time they attract new people. They're not out to gouge anyone. They're just trying to stay true to what they have at the same time they accept the changing realities of the MMO market, and create a more efficient delivery mechanism for all the great stuff they have made.
How many subscribers are there now? Have the devs said lately? Perhaps the ship has grown leakier than it appears. -
Is there any way that the last mission of the Terra Volta reactor respec could get some love? The last half hour of it is pretty much an exercise in boredom. The way it goes now, a crowd of enemies appears at a door or two, gets soundly trashed in about thirty seconds, and then we have several more minutes of bored waiting until another wave shows up. (And for whatever reason, the mobs often spawn at -1 or -2 levels to us, even when we have the difficulty set to +1.)
The villain respec is a lot more challenging and less boring. It would be nice if heroes could have something like that. Or at least have a few more baddies to fight while we wait out that half hour of boredom. -
Interesting. I'll update my guide when I'm home. I ordered three cards from them and applied one of them, and it worked with no problem. Hadn't applied the other two yet. I'll try those as soon as possible to make sure. It's good to hear they issued you a refund.
UPDATE: Both of the other two cards I applied worked.
