I have perpetrated another guide.

Hosted on ParagonWiki, I give you:

R_M's Guide to Getting Cheap Months

I cover several methods of saving money on months of game time, for new and old players alike. Because, after all, who wouldn't like to save a little money?

Hope you enjoy it!

Thanks for the info. I just tried the PCSupply link in your guide and within 10 mins had purchased and applied a 60 day game time card for $18.50. Quite a deal! One thing to note is that first time customers will get a phone call to verify the purchase before code is released. The caller showed up as Blocked on my cell phone. So if you're in the habit of not answering blocked calls (as I am) be expecting one after placing order. Thanks again,R_M!

$18.50? Holy cow, they dropped the price! (I'm going to have to update my guide.) I wonder how long they're going to be able to keep selling them for that--I remember when Amazon was offering physical cards for $21, and apparently someone at NCSoft gave them a talking-to because they reverted the price back to standard retail.

I wonder if I dare wait until I can get home to go in and order several of those?

I just checked. Price went up to $24.99 for 60 days. Guess I got lucky on that one!

Well, I just checked and it still shows $18.50 here. Perhaps you checked the wrong place?

Regardless, I snagged three of them on Friday.

This is not true. I started my original account using the plain ol' City of Heroes CD-Rom. I'm also a bargain hunter and as such I grabbed it for $10 shortly after issue 9. I was also able to later apply the GvE edition when I saw that cheaply enough to get my jump pack and Pocket D Pass a couple years later.

They must have changed something since then. I had the same experience as you, originally, but I started my account when the game first launched. Someone who replied where I posted this guide on the CoH livejournal community told me that he found the original CoH disc and Good vs. Evil are now mutually exclusive when he set up a pair of accounts for friends using older boxes recently.

Agreed. I started on GvE. Then bought a collector's edition CoH and a collector's edition CoV for the prestige sprint and the arachnos emblem.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Ahh, I see what I was doing. I was navigating from the home page of PCSupply and looking at COH game time cards, which is $24.99 for 60 days. But when looking at NCSoft cards instead of COH then it's $18.99

Has anyone had issues with codes from PCGameSupply ?

They've provided me with 2 60 Day NCSOFT Time Cards in the last 24 hours that when I entered them I received a "This serial has already been used." error message.

UPDATE

NCSOFT contacted me and confirmed that both codes had in fact been used, and that PCGameSupply was not an authorized seller.

PCGameSupply, apologized for the inconvenience, canceled my order, and refunded it.

I'd like to add some information about the referral program here Perhaps it can be refined and added to your guide!

Around the beginning of July, I decided to come back to City of Heroes in anticipation of the new Freedom transition. I'm one of those players that this free-to-play change is really targeting. I do enjoy the game, but have never been willing/able to pay full price non stop, year after year.

The first thing I did was hit up Twitter and asked around for a referral invite. It took about 30 minutes for me to get one from someone I'd never met. I used the #CityofHeroes hashtag. You can also ask me directly @CandarieHeals, as I now have VIP and of course would be glad to do so.

Paying for the first month cost me $15, and both me and my benefactor received an extra month for doing this. This brings the immediate cost of the first two months to $7.50/ea.

Immediately after getting reactivated, I did the same invite process for my wife. We always enjoy playing together, so this worked out very well. We then paid another $15, and she received 2 months of play and I got an additional bonus month. At this point, I've not paid any more money than I would have paid for two months for myself; so if you have any friends or family to bring with you, this is a real saver.

We paid a total of $30 for 5 months of VIP. This breaks down at this point to an effective $5 per month for myself and $7.50 per month for my wife.

We could have done better however, if we had read this guide first. The guide contains great information on discounted game cards, which can be used for reactivation in this way. However much you saved on the cards themselves would compound this bonus. I am not personally sure if you can use the "old box set" method, but perhaps?

There's alot players coming back to the game these days just like me. Even if you are already a subscriber, you can probably use this technique with anyone you know that might be coming back for Freedom. Hope this can help your pockets!

Hey, I didn't see this post until just now, but the other day I actually did add a section on the referral program to my guide. An interesting thing about it is that buying and applying a game expansion apparently counts as a month for the purpose of this referral program. So you could earn yourself a free month by inviting a friend who hasn't played yet, and sending him the code from one of the older $5+shipping game packs.

Interesting. I'll update my guide when I'm home. I ordered three cards from them and applied one of them, and it worked with no problem. Hadn't applied the other two yet. I'll try those as soon as possible to make sure. It's good to hear they issued you a refund.

UPDATE: Both of the other two cards I applied worked.

I just made a purchase of the 60 day card and when I entered it into the NCSoft site I was told that it had already been used. I just contacted the company and am waiting on a reply.

I just went and ordered another one myself and got the same result. I am waiting on a reply.

EDIT: They sent me a replacement code. That one had already been used as well, and I complained again. Then they sent me another one that worked. They said that it was an issue with their code supplier sending them a batch of invalid codes.

I was sent a new code that worked perfectly. I will probably give them another shot next month. Thanks for the heads up.

I just purchased one, and it said it was allready used, sent a message to them, waiting for a reply.

EDIT: After requiring me to send in screenshots of me entering the code, they sent me a new one that worked. The process was slightly annoying, but cheep enough where I would do it again.

Yeah, I've updated the guide to indicate that there may be a glitch in the ordering process--but given that every single person it's happened to has gotten satisfaction after complaining about it, it seems more that they're the victim of their supplier rather than trying to rip anybody off.

Just used, had the same issue but was also resolved.

Alas, the site now lists the $18.50 cards as out of stock. Glad I snagged four of them. Will be interesting to see if they ever come back into stock again.

Says "in stock" now.

Tried to use a re-referral code and enter a Going Rogue code as a time card code, but got "This serial can not be used as payment". Is there a trick to it or has the option been disabled?

Just checked this morning. They're listed as In Stock again.

The referral program no longer works. I did update the guide to mention that fact.

The referral programme (using trials) has been discontinued, but the re-referral (reactivating an old account) is still advertised on the NCsoft launcher, and on the CoH site. The account page no longer has the "refer a friend" link, but does have "invite a friend back". So it looks to me like the programme is still active, just that the GR code is no longer accepted as a time code.

I'm tempted to test this with a time card, but probably won't get one just for this right now.

Edit: The more I think about it the more I'm inclined to try it, coupled with those $18.50 cards. Freedom got me in the mood for paying.

Looks like the cards are out of stock again, and now they're up to $22.50. Oh well, they're still a pretty good deal--on par with the yearly subscription rate, without having to commit for a whole year to get it.

And they were originally $22.50 before they dropped to $18.50, so maybe they'll drop again in the future.
