No, fake as in "they paid people to react". It's still a neat trick, but the terrible acting ruins the whole thing. :/

What? Why were you in the woodwork?

Quote:But here's the weird thing. You know that Metallic costume that's been in the game since release? It got true reflections when the real-time reflection effects first got put in and it takes colors perfectly. Why wouldn't they do the same thing with Celestial armor or any metallic costume part that's supposed to be reflective? It's annoying because it makes an otherwise excellent costume set really hard to work with if you use other pieces. It can be done, sure, but you're pretty limited with your color choices and I really don't think it was designed that way intentionally."Pre-colouring" is why I've always maintained that better graphics don't necessarily make a game look better. Yes, costume pieces in City of Heroes have been looking better of late, but a lot of this has to do with their higher polygon count, higher-resolution textures and a more focused art direction. But every time new tech comes into the mix, it seems to ruin pieces rather than make them better. As far as I'm concerned, "reflective" textures have done nothing for my characters but make them look uglier and less consistent because reflective pieces don't take colour well and don't match other, non-reflective pieces. And Celestial is the most striking example.
This started with Steampunk, where nearly every piece was either pre-tinted to be brown or had untintable brown parts to it. It seems the art team learned their lesson and they're making a LOT fewer mistakes like this with new costume pieces... But these still exist in older costume pieces. And our chances of getting those fixed via adding non-chrome options are pretty much down to Dink's charity in granting player requests in her lunch breaks, because the studio will pretty much never budget for that. Fixing outright broken old costume pieces is like pulling teeth. Fixing costumes that are working as intended and just aren't very good? That's unlikely.
Oh, and by the way - the same is true of Mecha Armour. Roughly half the armour colours correctly, but the other half is chrome and colours barely at all. -
Things like renames aren't expensive because they're hard to do or because of database maintenance or any such thing. When you buy one, it's pretty much instantaneous because they've completely automated the process. It's not as if someone has to sit there and type in your new name in place of the old one. Like Doctor Roswell said, it's because they just don't want people renaming their characters all the time so they charge a non-trivial amount for it. Every MMO I've seen is the same way. They want you to at least have some attachment to your characters.

My opinions are almost entirely based around looks/sounds of a set rather than performance. With that said, my least favorites:
* Ice Armor - I like the set itself, but it looks just awful. One of the worst representations of ice powers in any game I've seen.
* Earth Armor - I think this looks as terrible as Ice Armor, but it also has the benefit of having all sorts of unnecessary penalties that have failed to evolve with the rest of the game. But mostly, it's very very ugly and nowhere near what I'd think a superhero with earth-based powers would look like. Granite would be okay if it didn't look exactly like a DE monster, but the rest look like you just have the power to fall into a mud pit and not care about washing it off.
* Sonic Attacks - I hate this set purely for the sound effects. Beyond annoying. -

This is the biggest sticking point for me. For the most part, the game's method of auto-leveling characters for TFs and teaming in general is absolutely excellent and should be copied by every MMO out there. But they've failed to update their archaic contact/mission system with appropriate tech. There's zero reason to out-level a contact or story arc and I can't think of a single other MMO that makes content unavailable if you pass the level it was designed for.

Quote:All of this stuff drives me bonkers because it all seems so obviously broken. None of it is game-breaking, but it affects the presentation a ton. The ragdoll bug even goes past that and in some severe cases allows you to defeat enemies without retaliation because they're stuck in the wall or on a rail or doing the splits after being knocked back. Some things that come to mind from a technical standpoint:
- the aforementioned ragdoll physics. It seems to be a bit better currently but enemies still twitch and twirl in ways they never used to after being defeated.
- NPC dialog that is spoken by an offscreen character. There are times where I've been unable to ascertain who is even speaking thanks to this:
[CAPTION]: Hey there, $playername, you'll find that secret lock of Manticore's hair in his shrine room.
And any new player that runs Death From Below or the Mathew Habashy starting arc will see [CAPTION] almost immediately and repeatedly. I can't believe QA hasn't reported the bug and don't understand why it hasn't been fixed yet. It may be small but it's right in your face, mission after mission and it diminishes the experience (unless every CAPTION is secretly Nemesis. I would accept this as a Nemesis plot).
- jagged, low poly rocks in caves. This is an old bug that has been fixed before but it got bugged again. In any cave mission look at the rocks (exception: rocks that are specifically placed for a particular mission, like SSA 1.2) along the ground and you'll notice that they are all very low-poly -- because a lot of the polys that *should* be there aren't. Again, not a critical, game-affecting bug but it looks sloppy.
And not so technical:
- reducing the number of options when starting the game. You get one path or Death From Below and that's it.
- the bog standard end game system of raids to get slightly better powers (effectively, gear) in order to do more raids to get more slightly better powers. I was hoping that CoH would do something different but the design philosophy has hewed extremely closely to the established EQ/WoW formula.
- the new insta-spawns that materialize in front of you. CoH used to always hide this, unlike other MMOs. It helped immersion and made for a less annoying experience. This, along with tethering and phasing are examples of the game failing to innovate and instead simply following the lead of other games.
I'm not sure if it's actually gotten worse in the past 2 years, but escort missions certainly haven't gotten any better. They're terrible. I have no desire to babysit an NPC simply because they get stuck around a corner or on a staircase or a rock or dozens of other things. It's also really maddening that the "fix" for escort NPCs for player stealth powers that was put in years ago to prevent people from exploiting escort missions has still not been addressed. It's just unnecessary and is a case where the devs' old and weird "risk vs reward" obsession resulted in many ham-fisted changes like this that punish people playing normally far more than it does those who were deliberately trying to game the system.
One other thing I think has gotten worse are the wild difficulty swings in a lot of the newer story arcs, mostly related to the use of friendly combat NPCs in missions. I know you often get the choice on whether or not to use them, but in my experience it hasn't been clear on the first playthrough just how much help they're going to be. There are many missions where you could quite literally do nothing while your super-duper NPC buddies clear out the entire thing for you. And then there can be a mission in the very same arc that ends up being difficult simply because it's not clear what you're even supposed to be doing, often due to Ned's mentioned Caption issue.
The last thing I'll complain about that has definitely gotten worse is the use of the giant blobs of NPC dialogue that gets vomited out right as combat starts. This has been a problem for quite a while, but with the ever-increasing focus on story, the frequency of it has gone way up. Similarly, dialogue that takes place when talking to a friendly-but-about-to-turn-unfriendly NPC is often impossible to actually read before they start fighting. -
Quote:So you really don't feel statements like "I find it remarkably petty that ya'll are ready to burn whoever's responsible for this minor goof at the stake." are overly dramatic? Because as far as I can tell, not a single physical threat has come up in this thread. I know you can't possibly mean that literally, so the only other logical conclusion would be that you're making the complaints out to be more than they are. People are disappointed, but that doesn't mean they're frothing at the mouth as your posts would suggest.Originally Posted by Captain-ElectricYou're wrong about a couple of things. Quote:The only thing I find remarkable is how some people will defend everything no matter what and make negative comments out to be inherently bad. You're being far more dramatic with your comments than most of the people disappointed in this whole situation. The only thing that smacks as disingenuous is the collectively spoiled rotten tantrum in this thread. Yes, the requirements illustrated by the mockups should have been checked (I still think Zwillinger is jumping on someone else's grenade). But after all of the victories we've had in community participation recently (Edit: "we've" as in, us and the devs together) (hello and hello and hello), I find it remarkably petty that ya'll are ready to burn whoever's responsible for this minor goof at the stake. Good luck with that. If the community here wants to be all Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde when plans hit a snag, that's fine if all you're wanting is to send Paragon Studios a message that community participation can be perilous.
-
Yeah, but at that point you're also manipulating gravity, so "water manipulation" isn't completely accurate anyway.
-
I think the main issue here isn't necessarily the background itself, but the fact that an official poll about which one the community wanted was posted by the community manager himself and in the end the results of the poll didn't matter. Had the poll been posted by a community member, I doubt there would've been nearly as much of an outcry. Asking what the community wants and then going with the overwhelming minority choice, regardless of whether or not good reasons exist for doing so, looks bad and it's completely understandable why people would be upset. I honestly couldn't care less what the background of the forum looks like, but this poll just seemed rather disingenuous.

Yeah, the volume is all over the place in this game. The ambient sound in the zones is great, but to properly hear it you'd need to have the volume up so loud that combat would blow your ears out. It's been this way since day 1, though, so I'd be really surprised if it ever changed.

Quote:Well, sure, having an in-game preview of the Vet packs would be great, but it's still your fault that you bought something you weren't sure about. There were all sorts of pictures posted of the Celestial set when it came out and it's pretty easy to find lots of them on this very forum if you look.Funny how the idea that 'googling the costume bits' is such a common response. Because that is SO much easier than..you know..letting us actually PREVIEW them in game. Why should anyone be 'forced' to search for pics...when a preview is something we ought to have?
Because I DID google search the bits..and all I could find was a few old threads with screenshots from the front. Bit hard to see any gaps that way.
I also looked at a few people with the bits, in game. Didnt see gaps either. Great arguments.
The celestial rifle is still junk.
And hell, you're complaining about the lack of an in-game preview but also that you looked at people wearing the costumes in the game and didn't notice the gaps? Do you really not realize how ridiculous all of this sounds? -
I'm just amused that every Freebie Friday thread is pretty much identical to the last. I suggest saving time by creating a txt file on your desktop so you can easily copy and paste your opinion each week.
-
Quote:Good grief. It takes a special kind of selfishness to view a free gift that way. God forbid they don't tailor everything to you specifically. It was a slap in the face to me as a 7 year VIP customer that has dumped alot of money into the game to get a free item I have no use for.
Quote:Originally Posted by Gemini_2099It doesn't matter if it is free, if the customer perceives a slight. In my opinion, unless they ramp up Freebie Friday this type of tone is pretty much ho hum. -

As far as I'm concerned, the more people buying these purples the better. I personally think it's a ridiculous amount of money for a set of enhancements, but I certainly don't mind if someone I might be teaming with has awesome set bonuses.

I assert that the Ace Ventura has had a large impact on the popularity of "alright". I think we can all agree that "All righty then!" is silly, whereas "Alrighty then!" makes perfect sense. This is indisputable. Don't even try!

Quote:While that may be your preference, I have no idea how you could possibly presume to know how much hats with no hair would be used if it were an option. To even suggest you have any idea what "most characters" want seems odd.Well a drop down for several versions at least.
Sorry... but no-hair is one of the least common versions that would be used. Short hair and a long hair would already suit most characters who use hats. As the default will not be removed that makes three versions for each hat.
And yes, I suppose I should've clarified my OP a bit. What I'd like to see is an option to use hats on heads that wouldn't have hair, i.e. reptile skin, robotic, elemental, etc. Since there are quite a few of those, it only makes sense and while I can typically get away with matching the color of the hair to the head, it's still just a workaround and doesn't always look good. So many robots with hats I'd like to make!
And arguments about how much work it would take are irrelevant to what I'm suggesting, so I'm not certain why that's even being brought up. It's a suggestion to the devs, so any objections to the amount of effort needed for such a change should come from them, not from us. I'm really not sure why people come into these threads to shoot down requests for more options in the character creator. This game lives for its insane customization, so seeing people oppose ideas that would add to that are puzzling to me. I'm not asking to take anything from you. Just let my robots wear hats! -
I'm certain this has been suggested many times already, but is this ever going to be done?
-
Yeah, I'd prefer that, except maybe not as crystalline. Really, I'd love if they could just make a shiny, smooth, reflective ice texture that conforms to the body's shape with maybe some cracks here and there instead of the blobby stuff they've been using. I still really hate the look of the ice armor set and this new set still doesn't quite get ice right.
-
I think some of the set looks good, but most of it isn't for me at all. I especially dislike the non-elemental versions of the weapons that just look like crude stone carvings of swords and maces. Heck, the sword looks like a blunt weapon. The body parts look good as fire/magma, but using them as ice looks more like rock with glowing cracks in it.

Quote:I just love how much information some of you folks seem to have about the inner workings and financials of the people making this game. You also keep trotting out the "for free" part, but that's not it. The OP doesn't want something for free, he wants it for the money he's paying every month to play this game. You say that's unreasonable and that's your opinion, but that doesn't mean it's surprising for people to be disappointed that their monthly subscription doesn't get them new power sets.If they were not charging for Street Justice and Beam Rifle, it is very likely neither one of those sets would exist.
Did you realize that Paragon Studios is HIRING again? I bet not.
What do you think they are using to hire those people? Here's a hint: It's not our subscription fees.
Since Paragon Studios is hiring people, that means we will be getting even MORE new stuff, some of which will most definitely be free for VIPs.
Hmmm, we have a choice, the same amount of free stuff we've always gotten, at about the same pace we've gotten it.....or a bunch of new stuff if we purchase some of the new stuff. I know which one *I* would go with.
The OP apparently wants a bunch of new stuff at an accelerated pace, for free. The only reason we are getting as much new stuff as we are is because they are making more money to re-invest into the game. They are making that money from people buying things like power sets.
Here's the thing with that for me: I don't know if I'm even going to like the new sets. Paying $20 to try both of them just isn't something I'm willing to do. Now, I'm not completely opposed to buying them if I like using them, but until I can find that out... no way I'm paying 1.5x the subscription cost just to see.
And I'm sure some of you are saying "well tough, you don't get them!" and it's fine if that's how you feel about it, but that's not very customer-friendly. I have absolutely no issue whatsoever with paying for costume parts XP boosters and other fluff that are just nice-to-haves, but when it comes to powersets, I think it's just not fair to charge for them without being able to try them out first. -
As it turns out, if you've got lots of paid time on your account, the answer to that question is "not much". As a premium subscriber, I'm only really limited by having fewer character slots, no access to the Incarnate stuff and I'm missing a few costume parts. While it's great they give so much for free to customers who have been loyal over the years, it's actually sort of rotten that my $15 gets me quite a bit less than someone who just started paying for a subscription. I should've checked first, but I resubbed specifically to try out the new power sets and instead found out that I had to purchase them in addition to paying the monthly fee. Severely disappointing.
