  1. GRATZ ON THE BIG DING!

Others will be along soon to recite the litany of Life After 50, but short answer is, no more Training... you can tweak your build with IOs and Sets, but you'll be getting no more Powers and no more Slots at this point.

A blaster is a lot of fun early and gets a little hard to solo later (but not impossible by any means). The problem with the very solo-friendly scrapper as a first character is that going from a scrapper to tank later will make you feel like you're not doing much damage, and going from a scrapper to a blaster will make you feel like you can't take a hit at all.

    Just my two cents.
Counting me, I think that makes at least 4 "going against the grain" votes for Blaster, then Scrapper.

The bottom line being, if you can learn to play a Blaster, everything else will be THAT much easier to play.

Which isn't to say that being a Blaster is that much harder than other ATs, but it does force you to learn the entire spectrum of gameplay tactics & strategies, including things a Scrapper can safely ignore much of the time.

Blastering will give you a crash course in things like Aggro management, Stamina management, Pulling, targeting through other players, when to stand your ground and when to RUN FOR THE HILLS!, canny Inspiration use, etc. and etc.

Then you can jump on a Scrapper, switch off your higher brain functions and just, y'know...Scrap, secure in the knowledge that you've already proven yourself on a thinking-man's AT.

    *ducks n flees the Scrapper-wrath*

p.s. if you do go Blaster, I'd say the Energy set is one of the "safer" sets for a new player, as your attacks also do KnockBack (KB), which makes keeping them away from your squishy-self that much easier. It also give you an opportunity to learn how to USE the KB to HELP your team, rather than harm it by blowing baddies OUT of oil slicks, ice patches, caltrop fields, etc.
  3. Hey "Lots of questions", lots of Replies.

Your stuff's been pretty well hashed-out now, just wanted to address one point.

You ask if you need to know the game to be a good Tank - most people are saying you don't really "need" anything other than common sense to be a good *player*.

Tanking, IMHO, is an exception in one way...

A good tank leads the team into the mobs, soaking up the dreaded Alpha-aggro. And knowing when to leave the scraps to the squishies and look for the next mob helps keep things moving along at a good clip. If you want to be a good "leader" of teams, it helps to have some familiarity with the mobs and maps.

Knowing when to charge ahead, when to Pull, when to dive in, when to Herd, etc. can be the difference between a fast, fun, debt-less team and a slow, frustrating, debt-filled team.

So Tanking, IMHO, is really the one and only AT that really benefits from having some experience in-game.
  4. These are great Primal!

You and SteelClaw should have a quip-off!
  5. Was it announced ahead of time tho Agge?

I don't check those pages first thing, maybe it was.

I knew there was something in that section about it, didn't know if it was a Heads-up kinda thing or after-the-fact, or just a Discussion about it, after-the-fact.
  6. Probably just coincidence, but I saw a relative *ton* of LFT/LFA-flagged players when I logged on last night.

Filled a team almost entirely with various LFT-flagged ATs.

Not saying this thread had anything at all to do with it, just sayin'...it really is a relief when you click Search and see a whole slew of Flags right there at the top of the list.

I'd love an overhaul to the current system though, with Team Leaders able to mark themselves as "Leaders looking for teammates", it'd make my PUGing even easier.
Y'know an interesting thing happened just last night - I had sent an Invite to someone who was apparently AFK, I totally forgot about them until Voila apparently by magic the popped onto the team.

Made me think - Wouldn't it be awesome if a team Leader could set an Open Invite if LFM, maybe even select a Preferred AT, and people LFT could look at a Search list, choose the team they want to join based on level, zone, mish type, etc. and then just.....join up! And they'd pop into the team until it was full!

It happened very quietly at the beginning of this week.

No announcements or reasons why, just...*poof*

Can't say as I miss it.
  8. Just FYI, in case you missed it during your hiatus - they were offering free Server Transfers for an entire month this winter.

I suspect there was a sizable migration to the more populated servers at that point (Freedom, Virtue).

As far as players can glean from the drips of info provided by NCSoft, player numbers have not declined *significantly* this year (apart from recession losses as expected).

You should be able to find plenty of players to team with on Freedom or Virtue, I know I do!
  9. Thanks for the info MouseDroid - I guess I'll just wait for more specifics from NCSoft on the NYCC stuff. But from your notes I'm looking forward to some real fun! Thanks again.
  10. You *might* try posting in the Tech Issues & Bugs section - see if some of those hard-core tech-heads might be able to come up with some kinda client-side tweak for you.
  11. Conventions/Meet & Greet for Dummies please?

I'm considering going to the NYCC Meet & Greet in October but know NOTHING about how these work.

Could someone provide a few bullet-points geared for someone who's never been?

-Does it take place inside the Con, so I need a ticket?

-Does it take place on one day of the Con or one each day?

-How long does an M&G usually last?

-Do players often organize casual beers or something outside the event?

-What's it like, do you stand around with sodas n chat? Are there activities, presentations?

-Is it fun? Worth buying a ticket even if I'm not interested in the rest of the Con?

-Anything else you think I should know?
  12. Looks to me like you're on the right track, but you can always dig through the Player Guides section (<--linky) for more specific slotting advice targeting specific ATs.

(I suggest starting with the Guide To Guides, second Sticky from the top)

In theory, the correct pronunciation for the Latin is Pry-tor.
And what about "slithey toves", Brillig? Sly-thee? Slih-thee?

Did they gyre and gimble in the wabe?

    Thought so!

  16. Just wanna say I'm a New Yawka and am giving serious thought to signing up for NYCC solely for CoH-stuff - but have a few questions - well just one really - How does this kinda thing work?

I've never been to a Con or a Meet & Greet - so do you have to have tix for the NYCC or does the Meet & Greet take place outside? Should I expect to hear about other NYC CoH events that week? (official or unofficial e.g. Just Gettin' Together for Beers). Where will that info appear?

Any hints or tips or linkys for a Con newb would be much appreciated!

P.S. in an earlier post Shadow Wail asked about a post-M-&-G get-together, I'd be up for that. Depending on budgets, I'd nominate the new Ink48 hotel just a dozen blocks north of Javits Center, specifically the Press Lounge up on the 16th floor.
  17. Welcome back to the game and the Forums!

I'd say it's pretty common for people to leave and come back, sometimes at pretty regular intervals.

Think about this game in relation to other (single-player) games you own - you probably played most of them once or twice through, maybe more, but eventually you set it on a shelf and moved on to another game.

This game just kinda keeps chuggin' along, with periodic updates and additions, but it's not hard to "burn out" after playing it hard-core for a while, and feel the need to take a break.

Personally I usually play pretty intensely for a couple of months, then don't touch it for a few weeks or even a month, then come back with renewed gusto. I'd imagine that's pretty common behavior.

  19. As they prepare for the daunting task of Overseeing all the do-gooding and do-eviling going on in Paragon City & the Rogue Isles, Emperor Cole's scientists have stumbled across a way to aggregate and display all the Player Notes that have been made about you and your characters.

Will you sign on to view these?

What would you hope to learn?

Would the knowledge have any impact on your play style?
  20. If you were gonna have a well-known figure from CoH lore develop something super-hi-tech, who would be the most likely suspect? For good OR evil.
  21. Just FYI the venerable and o-so-hilarious Rude Tells thread is thattaway------>

This woulda made a great addition, too bad you posted it here instead!

Yes Quinch I have to admit, the flip-side of this request is that those who DO take the time/trouble to set their Flag actually ACT as if they really ARE LFT (by responding to my polite Invite within, oh...I dunno...10 minutes of me sending it?).

I'm reluctant to criticize anyone who's actually bothering to use the Flags at all, but there's nothing more frustrating than getting all excited when you see 3 needed, level-appropriate ATs all Flagged as LFT at the top of the list, and NOT getting a response from ANY OF THEM after an Invite Tell (happened this weekend!).

*shakes head sadly* Really, then, it's just about the whole LF-Search-team formation thing needing a minor overhaul. I think it's pretty powerful and pretty useful as-is, but some tweaking and polishing would really make it shine.

Wait, are you saying that 26/30 players in Talos were Hidden from Searches?

That, to me, just seems counter-productive in an MMO.

    But to each his own.
