  1. Like everything in life, it's all relative.

This game sets itself apart from other MMOs by having an incredibly interactive, responsive Dev team (compared to other games).

Could it be *more* interactive & responsive? I suppose so, if all they had to do all day was chat with us and brainstorm ways to bring all our requests into the game.

But they do have other responsibilities. Even the Ocho has far more threads to police than those you or I or anyone else frequents on a regular basis (c'mon who really spends time in ALL the forums on these boards?).

Me, I'm a glass-half-full type, and I'm really just in awe of how much the Devs *do* listen, and respond to player concerns.

    Quote:
Toe the Line means just that - stand directly at, not over, not behind, a specific line. I believe the reference *tends* to be military, boot-camp-ish,
British Navy - when called to formation you lined up by "watch", using seams in the deck planks to keep everyone in strict lines - i.e. you put your toes on the same line the guy next to you was on.

Store's been hinky ever since pre-Issue 18 release.

Gets that way around Issue releases, I hear.

Give it another try later, it'll settle down eventually.
  3. J.O.F. you're going to get a MUCH more enthusiastic response to this kinda question if you post in the Tech Issues & Bugs forum. <--linky

This one's more for in-game questions like "How do I get a cape?"

The really scary tech-heads lurk in the other place.

    It's a dark place.

    And cold. O so cold.
  4. This is a common issue and has nothing to do with your password.

It has to do with how you're leaving the game.

Do you often DisConnect or PC-crash and not log back in?

If so, you'll usually see that message when you try to log in again, because as far as the game is concerned, you never "officially" left.

Hitting the Login button a second time (after you get the message) should get you right in.

If you're not crashing or getting map-servered, you may have a glitch somewhere in the code controlling your Log-out. Try Verifying your files next time you have some down-time.

I absolutely LOVE winding up on any kind of perch in a fight.

One moment comes instantly to mind, in Striga, heading into the graveyard, landing by accident on some tiny outcropping above the door to a mausoleum, looking down at a bunch of angry werewolves charging at me, unleashing Energy Torrent (Energy blaster cone power w/ Knockback) and watching them all fly backward and sprawl on the turf.

Something about watching the action from above, so cinematic - I lurv it.

    Taking charge?

Hey if you're able to quickly type "please" into every message you send during a mission, more power to you!

I type for a living and am pretty dang fast - but spelling it out, risking typos, fixing typos, etc. every 2 minutes isn't worth it to me in the long run. Seeing all the messages one after another (above) does make it stick out like a sore thumb, but I think taken separately it's not as big a deal.

Important thing to take away is, Don't order your team around (as leader). Asking them politely will get a much better response.
  7. RobertoLyon

    Taking charge?

Forming & Leading a team does take a bit more effort, a bit more prep, a bit more patience, and a bit more tactical acumen, not to mention just a thimble-full of actual leadership skill.

But I will only form & lead my own teams, because I know what I'm gonna get (great xp, quick mission turnaround, very little hassle, and tons of fun).

Start here: "How to Form a Full, 8-player Team in Under 5 minutes without using annoying Blind Invites".

A good leader is hands-off until things start to go to s**t. Then you have to be willing to step in, lay out a tactical approach, and even call out the real screw-ups (in private Tells only, never in Team chat) if they're causing problems for the team.

    Couple of tips:

Be vocal but not bossy, especially at the start - every Team is different, some will gel immediately and need no guidance at all. Others will benefit from a "Let's all follow [the Tank/Scrap/Leader] pls" or "[Illusion 'troller] open with Phantom Army pls k?" or "[Scrapper] pls stay with the team k?" etc.

I always add "pls" to every suggestion - people don't like being ordered around, but making it a polite request makes people feel like they're contributing to the team effort by "pitching- in".

I also use the word "team" at every possible opportunity. "Enter when ready pls team" "Hold up a sec pls team" "let's clear this hallway too pls team" "good job team!" to reinforce that we're all part of a team and should play as such.

I think the main focus of a good leader is just to keep things moving. As Emberly says, you don't have to have everyone in the door to start your mish. Look at the ATs who ARE ready, if you think the Tank can handle the mobs you're facing, tell him to "jump in pls we've got your back", if not, maybe pulling a few is called for.

As you get more familiar with the maps n mobs, you should know when it's safe to leave your team to finish up the scraps while you charge ahead to the next mob.

Depending on your AT & level, either jump in and get things rolling or head back toward your team then lead them to the right spot. A good tank will do this on their own... if they don't, it's up to you to keep barreling foward to keep the pace lively, regardless of your AT.

i.e. Always "Lead from the front" unless you've got a really good Tank who's rolling along, then just "Lead by example" by sticking to him like glue.

Do try to say "Gratz", be witty/chatty (but not to the point of shirking your leadership duties), LOL at others' jokes (even bad ones), etc.

If you can simply "act" like you think a leader should act (think of a teacher on a field trip - for example I will wait at the elevators until I see the last player on the team approaching, before going up (get a "head count" since you will lose their location on the map once you go up the elevator)), then most players will immediately pick up on that and let you do the leading, which will usually keep the team together.

Leading can be very rewarding - and gets easier the more you do it. I recommend giving it a shot, the game can always use more people willing to form and lead teams.

    New n00bs

I'm gonna take a stand here and say that if that's what the OP is experiencing, the problem and blame lies solely with the Leader of his group.

Forming and Leading PuGs is my primary form of play, and modesty aside I'm probably one of the best Leaders you're ever gonna see, to the point that I often feel obligated to log-in and Lead a PuG just to give other players a truely hassle-free, xp-packed, fun-filled few hours online, thus encouraging them to keep playing this wonderful game.

Good leaders take a hands-off (but note Mute) approach until things start to go to s**t. Then the Leader has to be willing to step in, describe a tactical approach, and even call out the real screw-ups (in PRIVATE TELLS never in Team chat) if they're making the experience suck for the rest of the team. If a Rage Quit ensues, so be it, I never like losing teammates but can fill their spot in a matter of seconds if forced to.

With no hyperbole I can state that almost ALL my PuGs result in me being Friended, G-Friended, or simply complimented and thanked as my PuGgers retire for the evening.

OP: if you're unhappy with the Leadership (or lack thereof) of your Team, buck up and FORM ONE YOURSELF.

Yes, it takes a bit more effort. But in time Forming and Leading becomes second nature, and you'll actually GIVE SOMETHING BACK to this wonderful game and community.

I don't want to sound dismissive, but this is not something that's likely to change any time soon. There are too many instanced missions in this game and not enough artists on the devteam to give each mission a map with unique geometry. If it bothers you that much after just one month of playing, chances are this is a game you're not going to enjoy long-term.
Urm - Silver Gale is apparently penetrating my tin-foil cap and reading my thoughts - this is pretty much exactly what I was gonna contribute.

The repetitive maps are pretty much THE most widely abhored aspect of this game. The majority of us are willing to "play along" only because we love the gameplay and most of all the community so much.

But I'm right there with you - it really baffles me that the Devs continue to focus on adding new content OTHER than the MOST DESIRED form i.e. new maps.

    Really baffling.

But I still love CoH for everything *else* it has to offer, first and foremost being the smartest, most polite, supportive, and hilarious MMO community on the planet.

    Quote:
Heck, although the police-scanner missions can be on the common repeatable tiles, you can milk a good 20-40 minutes of gameplay on the safeguard maps, with their city blocks and separate indoor areas.
And Chase brings up a good point (for a change ), i.e. that if you're willing to do a little homework, there ARE endeavours you can pursue that bring you to new maps and experiences. Most of the TFs will show you at least one unique map, and Trials, and specific mission arcs will as well.

Go the the Player Questions section here and find a post titled "Must See/Must Do CoH content" (<--linked you) you'll find a ton of great suggestions for unique and off-the-beaten-path places and arcs and Trials and TFs to break up the monotony.
  10. Here you go: http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/List_of_Slash_Commands

    /camdist [distance in feet]

    /camreset

    /camrotate
  11. I pretty sure there are also /slash commands to adjust cam distance but I don't know it off the top of my head. For all I know there's one to allow you to pan around as well.

I *KNOW* there are some regulars here who can give you the /adjust cam distance command in a heartbeat they just haven't seen your post yet.

If you're still struggling consider posting in the Tech Issues & Bugs forum - bet you get an answer in no time at all.

Yeah the longer you hang around here the more you'll come to appreciate Zombie Man's contributions. He maintains the Guides section and has some awesome Guides of his own. You should also check out his fantastic flow-chart style map for getting around the various zones.

    The hum

All I can think of to contribute is that during Issue 18 Beta Testing they tried out a new "broken fluorescent lighting" sound FX. Most testers found it very annoying and I didn't think it was included in the Live release.

But it's possible that they just toned it down, and for some reason your particular sound card or even your own personal hearing is somehow amplifying the effect to the point of annoyance.

If that IS the case (and IMHO, a long shot) I'm afraid there's no remedy.

Why don't you try posting in the Tech Issues & Bugs forum to see if anyone has anything else to offer?

  15. Galadreil, you're most likely gonna get some help on your Tech issues here, but in the future may I suggest posting instead in the Tech Issues & Bugs forum? <--linky

That's where the real tech-heads lurk.

You'll also find a Stickied thread there with Common Problems & Solutions that may answer your questions before you even have to ask.

  19. Dear Ocho,

This is not a bump, as I know bumps are verboten.

I'm contributing by reminding people that this is a very useful thread for new & returning players...that they might find useful.

    As a thread.

    A useful one.

    For new and returning players.
