Character Creation Isuues

Well after a few years of being out of the loop I went out and bought the new City of Heroes Going Rogue for my laptop which is less than a year old. I used to play the original COH on my parent's computer back in the day and decided to get back into the game I spent playing for days on end.

Well I've run into some issues, all of which I've been able to fix myself but one now. For some reason when I go through the character creation process, when I get to the part that I'm setting my character's physical build, height, and all that, my character is invisible. As in there's no character there. Everything else works just fine though. Well if I skip it and go on to the next page for my costume well he's a really really faint whitish silhouette. I can barely make out any definitive features.

So simply put, what is going on and how do I fix it?

Please post the results of these two programs CoHHelper and Hijackthis But Just guessing I'm going to say it's because your laptop has an intel video solution rather than a decent video chip. And out of date drivers.

CoH really doesn't run on laptops any more except for high end gaming laptops. How old it is doesn't matter nearly so much as what the manufacturer intended it to be used as.

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with this. CoH runs perfectly on both my and my girlfriend's laptops, and neither of them are high-end nor gaming rigs.

I am going to agree with your other point though - a lot of the graphical issues popping up lately are directly related to integraged Intel graphics cards. Sadly, the only option is to upgrade your graphics card, and the only way to do that on most laptops is via a USB video card, and those usually are lower end cards, for the price of a top of the line card - hardly worth it IMO.

Well first off thanks for the links. It definitely got the game working for me and by what you said, it explains why the game is running so slow for me. Now what I'm wondering then since I'm not to tech savy when it comes to computers, what can I do to speed up the game-play so I'm not laggy like I am now? Part of it could be the internet service I have here to begin with but if there's something I can do for my laptop that'll speed up the playability I shouldn't have too much trouble affording the upgrade/s.

Someone already told ya. Dont' buy laptops with intel graphics solutions if you expect to game anything beyond Solitare.
That's the main problem there.
Laptops with higher end Nvidia or ATA mobile chipsets are the proper solution for anyone that expects or desires to game with a laptop. Period.

Galadreil, you're most likely gonna get some help on your Tech issues here, but in the future may I suggest posting instead in the Tech Issues & Bugs forum? <--linky

That's where the real tech-heads lurk.

You'll also find a Stickied thread there with Common Problems & Solutions that may answer your questions before you even have to ask.

Well excuse me for having bought my laptop almost a year ago. It's not like I know a whole bunch about computers so cut me some slack. I'm at AIT in the Army and just wanted to get back into CoH to play on my free time when I'm not training.

Don't mind him, he's just grumpy for some reason. Like another poster said above, you may want to check out the Tech Issues and Bugs forum. Those guys really know what they're talking about when it comes to issues like this. This forum is more for gameplay issues and questions, not that it's a bad place for a question like yours. You're just much more likely to get a GOOD answer to your question up there.

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you as well. Not that CoH can run. Not that you can enjoy the experience. But that it runs perfectly. I have played CoH on a laptop, on an older gaming system with an ATI card. And on a good gaming system with an 8800gt. And now I'm looking to improve my system by upgrading past the 8800.

To make a comparison to a different form of electronics. A non gaming laptop is a fifteen inch black and white television. Yes you can watch your tv shows on it perfectly fine. You aren't seeing any color and you aren't getting very high resolution but it is watchable. And if it's all you've ever watched tv on then it seems great to you.

Then comes the higher end laptops and the mid range basic desktop systems. They are like a thirty inch color television. A whole new world has opened up. The stories are the same. The jokes aren't any less or more funny. The characters are still just as obnoxious or lovable but you are now seeing things in color and the larger screen size lets you see things that you may have been missing before.

Then come the gaming laptops and high end desktop systems. Now you have a forty-two inch 720p Plasma. You may have thought the old color television was great resolution and you couldn't imagine that HD would make that much of a difference. But the moment you see a series, movie or sports event broadcast in HD there is no comparison.

Lastly (at least for now) are the high end desktop gaming rigs. Now you have a sixty inch 1080p HDTV (plasma or lcd, your choice). The jump from 720 to 1080 isn't nearly so drastic as the jump from black and white to color or even as drastic as the jump from standard to HD, but it still there and it's still very obvious.

So sitting there in front of your HDTV and watching your Blu Ray remastered release of Blade Runner there is a question you must ask. Do you consider your old black and white television perfectly good? Yes the story, the characters, the setting are what give you your love for Blade Runner. But is the experience really the same?

And that's why I tell people to upgrade from a laptop or lower end desktop. Not because I don't think they are enjoying their experience but because I have seen the difference myself and I know that I never want to go back unless I am forced to. I would rather have that black and white tv than nothing at all. But only just barely.

Many laptops run COH just fine... it does take a fairly beefy one to run Ultra Mode but standard graphics is a different story.

Case in point, I have a basic Asus I bought 2 years ago for roughly $500 with an Nvidia 8400M graphics card; it runs non-UM COH at around 40fps on it's 1440x900 15" screen. I also have a workstation class laptop I bought 3 years ago with an Nvidia 7950M graphics card and it runs non-UM COH at 50-60fps on it's 1600x1050 monitor and limited Ultra Mode at around 30-40fps.

I also have an Alienware MX11 with an Nvidia 330 that runs a 1300x768 screen at around 50fps but isn't UM capable.

My understanding from reading the forums is that while the Intel graphics can be problematic most people are able to get decent performance out of them on non-ultra mode graphics settings without having to turn off everything for performance.

Like everything else you tend to get what you pay for and a more powerful laptop will give you a better experience. However a decent machine will run the game, just not with all the eye candy turned on.

Actually I did some tampering with the game settings, turned the graphics down as low as it goes and then did some tinkering with my system. I'm not sure what I did or how I did it but I followed some tutorials, cleaned up my disk space some, and updated my drivers and now it plays just like I remembered it a few years ago. I gotta say thanks to the guy that suggested the link that led me to the driver updates.

Yeah the longer you hang around here the more you'll come to appreciate Zombie Man's contributions. He maintains the Guides section and has some awesome Guides of his own. You should also check out his fantastic flow-chart style map for getting around the various zones.

*goes digging for link to that map*
