Video Card-what to buy

I saw today on Tigerdirect that XFX is now offering a single-slot version of the Radeon 5770, 1Gb video card. I'm running a 9800GT 1Gb video card at present so I can only run UM on low/med. settings. I have a BTX case so I can only put in a single slot video in so this new card pretty much meets that need.

I am saving up for a whole new rig, but that won't happen probably until next year or later.

So my question is this: Is a Radeon 5770 significantly better than the 9800GT in running UM or should I just wait until I can get my new rig and get a 460 or something?

Can only say that the 5770 does pretty nicely in COH (I'm running one now.) Can't give you personal experience on it vs the 9800GT.

Be sure to check the power consumption on the new card so you'll know whether or not you'll have to buy a new power supply to handle it.

When I upgrade, I'll be upgrading my 7800 GTX, so I already know I'll most likely have to get a power supply too.

I have the 5770 1GB dual slot card and it runs Ultra Mode perfectly with everything maxed (Bloom and Depth of Field are shut off as they muddy the look of the game) running at 1920x1080. I get anywhere from 40-60fps, which is more than enough. I'm sure the single slot version will do the same.

Newer cards tend to need a power supply 550 and higher, so be mindful of that before upgrading.

Power shouldn't be a problem, the HD 5770 uses about the same amount of power as a 9800GT (max 108 watts Vs 105 watts).

Power isn't an issue, I have a 700W power supply.

My concern was whether the 5770 was going to be enough of a graphic boost to warrent going ahead and purchasing a new video card as that would delay the new computer.

I've also no experience with Radeons, I'm assuming from the above posts that they run COx ok? I had heard at one point there were driver issues with Radeons and COx.

The HD 5770 is roughly 50% faster, as measured across a wide range of games. Reports here indicate it does UM rather well at medium-ish to high settings.

Problems with Radeons were addressed with Issue 18. In fact I think they did the I-18 development ground-up ON Radeons to ensure all issues were eliminated?

Then your concern is unwarranted. Seriously! I'm running a 5970 now, but this rig began its life with an XFX 5770 1gb dual and it's a totally badass little card which performs (imo) extremely well for its price point.

If you're considering this, I would say "I can't think of a single reason not to".
