Moving Between Zones.
If you look at your map, you will see neighorhoods outlined in different colors. The Red area will be much higher in level. In your case, you must be wandering too far into the Gulch. Try to stay on the streets along the outer edge and you should be fine.
You are right though, some unlucky mission-door positions in that zone can have you headed into dangerous territory.
You could also decide not to do the Hollows contacts and head back to your previous contact to possibly get one in Kings Row instead until you get a little higher to start working your way back through the Hollows.
You've already learned that in the Rogue Isles ("redside"), your villain's missions will usually be in the same zone as the contact who gives them.
In Paragon City ("blueside"), your hero is sent all over the place. This exploration tactic was abandoned for City of Villains , apparently since an overwhelming majority of players weren't fans of the runaround.
Zones like the Hollows and Perez Park (later you'll find others) are Hazard Zones; their entrances are marked with a red circle on your map instead of the green marker used for regular city zones. Hazard zones were not built for a solo player to romp around in; they're geared towards teams, thus the larger groups of enemies.
You can, however, be thankful that you have the watered down version of The Hollows that exists now instead of the uber-dangerous version it was upon its creation. You can read more about it at http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/The_Hollows

Bit of a noob question but I just started playing this game and im loving it but having some troubles. As a Villian it seems you can move arount from 1-10 all in more or less the same zone. However im trying to play a hero and after lvl 5 it sends me to the hollows which seems cool enough. However, trying to get there and im seeing level 15s and im getting smoked. Did I miss something along the way? Like a easier way to move between the zones without getting ganked? Tx in advance. |
The "City" tab on your map will show you the city layout, zones, and the connections between them.
There is also a train system to take you between the non-hazard zones; it's marked on your map with a "T" symbol (on the "Zone" tab).

Are you still in Mercy Island? Typically, by level 6 you should be done with your Mercy Island Contacts and they would have referred you to Port Oakes (lvl 6-12 zone). Are you aware of the Ferry to get to the other villain zones?
Teams are the number one killer of soloists.
You do NOT have to do the Hollows missions. When you are sent to the Contact there, you can return to your original Contact without doing any of the missions.
If you wish, you can wait until you are 10 or so before returning to the Hollows. This will help you get through it more easily. Another Zone I typically avoid going into until I am level 9 is Perez Park. There is a mission you take from the Security Chief to defeat some CoT there, and it is such a hassle that I typically want until I turn 9, and then kamikaze on the Circle that are just inside the trees beyond the walled area. At level 9 I'm tough enough to at least get some kills, but still don't get XP debt.
Tx guys
Lots of new info to absorb; like the Train and Ferry. I can clearly see why they abandoned the runaround. As a WoW player for 5 years im spoiled in that im used to being led around from quest to quest. Its a little different here and im still adjusting. Tx again.
The trick is that the contacts hero side are some of the oldest content in the game, and so they not only send you all over the place, but things aren't as intuitive, you aren't always told where to go next or who you should be talking to.
There are a lot of different contacts hero side, so you have lots of options. One good tip is to go to King's Row, talk to the police contact there (should pop up as a waypoint contact the first time you enter the zone), and get a police radio scanner. After doing 4 radio missions (they're kind of random, no story to tie them together, but they'll all be in the same zone) you will get a "Safeguard Mission" to protect a bank from robbery. Completing this mission successfully not only will give you a temporary power (a useful travel power at levels 5-10 and 11-15), but once you go back to the police contact he will give you a new regular mission contact to work with.
That's just useful information if at any point you don't have any contacts at your level, you can be introduced to one after running a few radio missions. ^_^
In general hero side (to the best of my knowledge) there are something like 5 different contacts every few levels (every 5 or so?), one for each type of hero, ie mutant, science, natural etc., plus lots of special contacts who are zone-based like Wincott in The Hollows -- so there are many options, you don't have to do them all.

I never minded the travel. Actually miss being on foot at times since once I pick up fly or SJ I spend most of my travel time soaring above the little people and miss out on all the nifty details at ground level and the "challenge" of getting to your mission through hoards of reds and purples.

Over time the development of the game has resulted in Hero side having more self-contained zones (contacts in the zone don't tend to send you all over the place). The Hollows (5-15), Faultline (15-25), Striga Isle (20-29), and Croatoa (25-34). Also, at lvl 35+ both heroes and villains have access to the cooperative Rikti War Zone and Chimerora. A short mission arc has to first be completed to get to the latter of the two zones.
Hollows and Striga are hazard zones, but The Hollows has had a makeover that makes it a little friendlier to low level characters (mission doors tend not to send you to/across dangerous areas as much)
"My inner mind has become a reality-cracking overgod. He torments me! Help!"
Also, there is a skill involved in traveling while avoiding the high level enemies. You learn how far away enemies can spot you, and you start worrying about jumping over fences or rounding corners with out knowing what is behind them.
With practice, you can take a level 1 just about anywhere in the game, using just some care and situational awareness (and some luck).
Just about all of my level 2 characters make the trip through the Vanguard Base in Atlas Park to Peregrine Island, then through streets infested with level 45-50 enemies to make it to the Portal Corps door to get a jetpack. Sure, they occasionally get tagged by a sniper (that's the luck part), but most of them survive. It's fun!

I remember the first time I tried to run a level 2 all the way to Portal Corp in PI just to see if I could do it. I was doing good until I hit Talos and realized that the last time I was on foot there was way back on my first character, before I learned to get a Travel power. I had been Flying through Talos for so long (a couple of years) that I had forgotten how to get to the Ferry without cheating (jumping into the water and swimming to it). I recalled a tunnel near the train station, but I couldn't remember if it let out at the docks (it doesn't). While I was debating whether to take a blind jump off the cliff down to the docks, I got nailed by some Freaks. And a second time when I came back carelessly. I eventually did make it and took some screenshots at the Portal Corp logo.

^^ This.
Everybody (almost) is missing the text in his original post, and going off on a tangent, reminiscing. The Hollows entrance form Atlas Park is on the East end of the map. I believe it is marked by a red dot. Once inside, you should see Wilcott, the police officer. He is your first contact for missions in the Hollows, starting at level 5. If you are encountering level 15 mobs, I'll agree with the above poster in that you may have been going through Skyway to get there.
And if anybody bothers to PLAY through the Atlas Park contacts, veterans, you will see that they do indeed direct you to the next contact when you finish with them. They will allow you (usually) to pick from 2 contacts who you want to deal with. Then just select them out of your contact lists, and it will say what zone he/she is in. Check the map if you need to; there is a city zone tab that is VERY useful, as it even shows what tram lines go to which zones by the colored lines.
Above all, don't be discouraged and don't be afraid to ask questions, OP. Have fun!
