My Ill/TA/Fire just hit 50, so I've been working on her final build in Mids. I love her controls and the pets are awesome, but I feel something is missing. I'm pretty comfortable with everything I've come up with, but wonder if my slotting could be a little more efficient.
I'm not worried about softcapping +Def and +Res, that's what the controls are for.I DO place a huge emphasis on Accuracy & Damage, as you'll see.
I do some soloing with her, but now that she's 50 it'll mostly be teaming from here on out.
I realize I'll probably want another slot in Hasten. Endurance problems are usually taken care of with Consume, so I don't build past 2 EndMods in Stamina.
I'm not rich, but I'm not daunted by the prospect of working into an expensive build.
Here's what I'm working on. Let me know what you think:

If you want to "give Dominator a try", the common consensus is not to pick Grav as your primary. By all means, don't let me stop you from trying something that you think you might like, but I'm fearful you'll test out the AT's most reviled set and judge Dominators negatively based on that. Make sure to try a few different sets, is all I'm saying.
I got a Grav/Psi to 10 and deleted it. It had long animation times and generally felt lackluster. Someone else will fill you in on the rest. Maybe they can resell me on it too.
Like Blasters, Dominators are often maligned by the Scrapper/Bruteaholics as squishies, when the reality is that those players simply don't understand how to play them. Astute perceptions and the ability to move around the battlefield(or away from it!) quickly constitutes your defensive secondary. Doms play best in an aggressive, forward role. They are definitely not a "support" AT.
Don't make the newbie mistake of opening with the AoE Immobilize powers. It turns you into an aggromagnet that will quickly hate playing Dominators. -
They should be giving them out as vet rewards, considering that it's an aging MMO in an era of single-shard games.
-
I know, I read it in your OP. I mentioned it as an aside to illustrate that there's something about this combo that works really, really well.
Quote:The Sleeps seem less useful, especially on a PUG where certainly someone is using AoEs. So I didn't bother overslotting them. Not sure how they could be all that useful. If I'm solo, I'm not fighting that many mobs, my ST mezzes are fine. If I'm grouping, player AoEs kill my sleep. Either way sleep seems to have very narrow use. -
Quote:QFT.If your playing your blaster like you would play a scrapper, your going to die, ALOT. they are completely different styles of doing damage. If you play a blaster like a blaster, your much more likely to not just survive, but out damage said scrapper. Range is your best friend, and being able to attack while mez'ed, plus the scaling damage bonus the more you attack definately helps put things moreso into the blasters court.
Question: How do you feel about Doms? The Blaster-haters are usually also Dom-haters, and for similar reasons. Not trying to strawman, but I have noticed a correlation.*
If this was a thread petitioning for a slight damage buff for Blasters, I'd be on board. DPS is a legitimate concern, but most of these issues are between keyboard & chair. You don't need active defense when you're killing them first. Being mezzed is nothing. You can still attack!
*Yes, correlation != causation. -
Why would I want to play a Scrapper when I can take a Brute anywhere now?
Face it, some people just don't like playing certain ATs. Personally, I find Scrappers boring and laugh whenever I hear one complain about a Blaster's lack of defenses(it always sounds to me like they're not yet ready to swim in the deep end with the big kids).
I love my Blasters. My 50 Elec/Elec/Elec is a blapping machine of pure seat-of-her-pants awesome, and I have a riot every time I log her on.
Haters gonna hate(and hopefully play on a different team). -
I'm seeing why you've always disliked Dominators. Dominators require a specific mindset on the part of the person sitting at the keyboard. You seem to want a high-DPS Fire blaster rather than an AT with a Control Primary. Granted, a /Fire Dom IS high-DPS, but you're gimping your potential by ignoring the sheer awesome villainy that is Mind. Doms are incredibly aggressive, using both sets to full effect.
Take and use liberally:
Dominate
Mezmerize
Mass Hypnosis
Terrorize
Mass Confusion
Slot them for full effect.
[Edit] PS. Mind/Fire pwnz in PVP. -
Quote:You really didn't mean to sound like that, did you?Heh. You just reminded me of back when I worked Directory Assistance at AT&T. One of the supervisors was a useless excuse for a human being and...
I agree though, the gold thoroughly sucks. I'll bet Chompie's in a pretty small minority. -
My two favorite ATs are Blasters and Dominators. Both play in a very similar manner.
Ice/Ice is the combo to use if you want your Blaster to play just a little bit more like a Dom, for all the reasons candlestick listed. You could do a lot worse.
[My main bluesider is an El/El/El. Shockingly good CC and blaps.]
-
They're pure awesomesauce. Roll one now. DM's AoEs are nothing spectacular, but it has a few excellent hard-hitting STs that do a lot of debuff. WP keeps your green and blue bars full at all times.
-
You need to rethink your perception of Controllers. Their secondary is a support set, not their primary. Level an Ill/ to 50.
-
My one and only 50 Blueside is an El/El/El. I love the combo, and fail to understand why it gets dissed on so much. My thoughts/observations:
1) I hated Voltaic Sentinel, and specced out of it ASAP. Ymmv.
2) At low levels, Electric Fence is good for CC. Once you have a full arsenal of powers to choose form, it becomes pretty useless. My advice would be to slot it for End Mod rather than Immob. That way you can use it for a slight recharge if you ever find yourself below Power Sink's rather high end requirement(and without any blues). -
Quote:This is a joke, right? No offense but you display a lack of intelligence when you claim a player who has played Dominators before would need to play them again after this buff to understand them. If you lack the ability to take your past experience and just place a change in it then that is unfortunate. For me it isnt hard to just remember my time as a Dominator and in that memory just picture myself doing more damage. That is the underlying change that has occured as you have stated correct? Just more damage outside of domination. The archetype still is too fragile and genetically inferior in my opinion.
This isnt about Dominators anyway. -
Quote:/signedI demand the Devs stop being silly willies and get their little patooties together. I mean, how long does it take to get a rainbow unicorn power set!? I mean it's not that hard! Just make a quadrupedal skeleton and make every power a giant rainbow unicorn called Mr. Honeymuffins run down the enemies and insta-kill everything.
After all, nothing can survive the power of the rainbow unicorn. And as such a loyal member since the year 18-diggity-two, I think I deserve as such. And what's with them not talking about that latest sporting event? They KNOW they're going to be there! They should know the scores, and have a personal video tape to show all the loyal players. But not you, you're ugly... you know who you are!
Also, why don't I get doughnuts delivered straight to my house with a big 'thank you' edible licorice sticker on the basket? This is a slap in the face to us loyal players. Except for you, you're allergic to wheat. Haha! Sucks to be you!
So, if all us loyal players (and by that, meaning me) don't get these demands I am totally walking the plank into the ocean of MMOs where I will surely drown, because of how bad everything else is in comparison (I mean, why else would I be so loyal! We all know I'm selfish). And how would that be on your conscience!? Huh!?
With Love,
Me! <3 -
There are two different types of CoX players, with completely different brain wiring:
1) Those who are sick to death of seeing the exact same warehouse and blue cave tilesets repeated over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again until our heads explode.
2) Those that honestly don't see what the problem or complaint is. They're just focused on their characters and/or the action with little concern for environmental factors.
NCsoft banks on the apparent fact that most long-term players seem to fit more into group #2. That's why new tilesets(or reusing rarely seen ones) are a complete de-priority. -
Quote:Why not? You're screwing yourself out of some awesome(arguably better) ATs and more content. Or am I misunderstanding and you play redside but have "dark protagonist" type characters?Which leads me to my first question, having never played a villain myself:
Who could forget Winston Phipps? You don't feel like a real villain until you do his mishes. "Destroy all hope for the poor and downtrodden? I'll be right back!" The opposite is Hardcase, who completely ruins the pretense of villainy.
I think most of my redsiders qualify best as "simply someone who wants wealth and taking it is the easiest way". I have a few bloodlusters, but not many. -
Question for everyone:
If they went ahead and made your dreams come true by releasing a costume creator and hiring top-notch talent to create a series of CoX comics, how would they inform the world of these developments? Would they just splash them up on the main page and hope it works itself out from there? -
Quote:Qft.perhaps i'm living in a slightly different universe than you, but in what reality do game companies wait until less than 2 months before release to do aggressive advertising for their game?
Most games and expansions ramp up advertising well before that. Multiple interviews on as many sites as will have them. Banner ads all over the place(these should be going on for an mmo regardless of an expansion being near release or not). Taken a look at the the old republic website?
You hype stuff to make sales. Successful game companies and even terrible game companies do this because you want to draw attention to your product. You want people to constantly be in anticipation of what you are bringing. You want your game to be on the minds of potential customers all the time. You do not just sit on your *** and make a few website updates and then post a note about it on your own forums if you want to bring in sales.
Take a closer look at the game industry and how it works before you make statements like that. Bioware pushed dragon age so much that folks at bluesnews and other gaming sites were talking about being sick of hearing about it.
The people on the forums aren't the ones who need to be reminded about cox...its all the other folks who haven't heard about it or who may not know enough about it to give it a try. Good grief...you realize that there are free to play mmos that do more advertising than cox? That doesn't seem weird to you? -
So how much can I buy a mint condition Wrath of the Lich King comic book for these days?
Why release a costume creator when people can already use one via the existing free trial?
Sorry guys, all of these ideas are just more attempts at reinventing the wheel.
Let's say Paragon Studios actually did hire Piers Anthony to do a story arc. Who's going to know about it? The existing playerbase that already plays the game? Or would they have to resort to doing something crazy like...Oh, I don't know...Advertise the game? So why not just save the money it would cost to hire Piers Anthony in the first place and use that money to advertise the game? I know, crazy... -
Or why not just do what all other successful MMOs actually do, which is advertise on gaming websites? No need to take the risk of reinventing the wheel when a few well-placed banner ads would actually do the trick.

Quote:His sig is a joke on the fact that he's not named after one of the signature heroes like BAB or Castle. Let's try not to scare him off again.Does anyone else see this as indicative of why City of Heroes has had such poor marketing?
How is that a marketing guy DOESN'T have the perfect sig, costume or avatar? Why is he SILENT, for cryin' out loud? No offense Black Pebble, but that's exactly the opposite attitude any good marketer should have, and you should be honestly embarrassed for actually bragging about that level of not-getting-it.
Why ISN'T CoH advertised everywhere gamers go? How come almost no one has heard of Going Rogue? You have 6 weeks until GR's launch and even my friends who are ex-players here have never heard of it. That's ridiculous, quite frankly.
It can't possibly cost that much to advertise on websites. Why does Newsarama have Neiman-Marcus ads but no CoH ads? Superherohype's background is Super Mario Galaxy 2. Comic Book Resources features Comfort Inn. Massively, a huge supporter of CoH, has never had a CoH ad that I've ever seen. Hell, putting an ad on BoingBoing will garner more eyeballs than almost any other website.
But I completely agree with everything else you said, and feel very strongly that it needs to be repeated over and over until NCsoft gets it. This game needs to be advertised in the same way that all other successful MMOs advertise: with ads on gaming websites. WoW, EVE and LotRO all spam their adds all over sites like MMORPG.com. What rationalization does NCsoft have for not doing the same? After all, they're spending the money to make an expansion, yet the company seems to have zero interest in actually selling boxes and making a return on the investment. They advertised the hell out of Aion, and we all saw the massive hype machine that surrounded it as a result. Why not try the exact same tactic for CoX? -
Add me to this list, but I don't sell the inspirations. Running the tutorial not only gets me Isolator/Jailbird, but it's also a way for me to make a first impression on a build.

5 Minutes after i17 went live, I found myself looking out the window trying to figure out who was honking.
