I have a fresh install on a new PC and I can't get to the log-in, I just get the splash screen (but not account and password login).
I can get through in safe mode... but that doesn't really help me unless I want to play like I'm in 1988. -
Bummer for those getting their walking papers. Hope you don't get too many recruiting spam tells
. Those who want or need to stay together can... prestige is not the major hurdle it used to be and the function of bases is diminished, So this isn't so bad. I'm sure there's plenty of folks around who'd help with SG names if needed.
The PKs were always pretty much a cult of personality, though, and I'm surprised they managed as they did.
Best of luck to all. -
Quote:Actually, they did this to reduce street sweeping and encourage people to do door missions. Teams of street sweepers were leveling faster than they wanted and ignoring all the content.hi,
first to a previous post the DEVS DID reduce the street mob xp and number of mobs, to stop the screaming by the players they added the 1/2 debt to missions.
Sewers til you can get to Perez til you can get to Boom til you can get to TV... etc
It didn't have anything to do with solo appeasement.
To everyone (not just the quoted):
I would venture to say that the average MMO player teams and solos. The average MMO player enjoys persistent worlds that has regular updates. Being in an MMO doesn't mean you are here to play with everyone all the time, usually you have a select handful of folks you enjoy playing with. You can meet new people and they might be new friends, too.
Many changes to the game that made it more "solo friendly" according to the "it's an MMO!!" crowd benefit everyone, not just solo play. Some were implemented to help smaller groups. For example, reduced prestige costs to help the smaller SGs... not all SGs are roster capped juggernauts, many are made up of a handful of friends.
I mostly solo. This is because of my time constraints, the hours I play, but also because I am kind of picky about who I spend my leisure time with. I'm here to have fun. I have fun in teams. I have fun solo. I never have fun with annoying people. In the online world, there's lots of annoying people. To some folks, I'm among the annoying people. That's cool, too. We're both happier not interacting.
I've been here a long time. Of course I want to enjoy new stuff as much as anyone else. My money is worth the same. What I want is worth as much as what you want. What the devs want is for both of us to be happy and keep paying our money.
I'm never asking to exclude someone else's style of play. Never. I only want to ensure that I'm not excluded, either. I need new stuff, too, if they want me to keep paying.
I am often confused by "hardcore" team players wanting challenge, but also insisting their way should be both of more benefit (xp bonus, drop bonus, whatever) and also faster. This is the opposite of more challenge, isn't it? You get things easier and faster....
When I ask for solo content, I'm not asking it to be exclusively solo content (unlike exclusively team content which seems to be championed by some I'd consider short-sighted). I'm simply asking for content to be accessible when solo. I don't mind paying the dues for my choices, but give me my choice.
If you exclusively team, you don't miss out on any game systems or content (with the rare exception of a couple Praetoria missions). If you exclusively solo, you do miss out on a few rare things, but can even still enjoy some "team" style things (you can still go on a Hami raid while not on a team/solo, you can still hit the Rikti Mother ship, but you can't do everything). My concern is team exclusive bits like the recently discussed higher tier Incarnate goodies.
Excluding people will drive them away sooner or later. Driving away players means less money for development and maintenance of the game. This becomes a downward spiral that doesn't benefit anyone but competing game companies and eventually loses you this game, entirely.
I've been with COH a long, long time... I believe since even before NC Soft was with it (not trying to establish cred, just pointing out I'm easy money for the devs). I'm happy to stay. However, excluding me from things can and will eventually influence where my money goes. Everyone interested in the longevity of the game and continued added features should share my concern. People who scoff and believe COH won't miss my piddly $15 are mistaken. It's why they charge me the $15 to begin with... if they didn't care, they'd let me keep playing for free -
I know someone who has names from before badges were entered that match up with characters being mentioned within them. The penalty is having to deal with people frequently sending tells "Do you know that...blah blah blah" or threatening to petition the name for any sad little reason.
The same player has the name of an NPC who is the target of at least one red side mission and requires rescue in one or two blue side missions. Never contacted by devs/NC Soft over it, though.
I wouldn't suggest re-making said characters, though, the names might actually be blocked and you just get to keep it via a grandfather clause (I've heard of people losing names when remaking and then discovering the name is blocked). Maybe check on other servers first. If someone else suffered such a fate, you'll discover the name blocked. -
I wouldn't want some corny prefix added to my name so that someone else can have the same name I have.
I don't want my global tacked on to the end of my name (I hated that "feature" in CO) so that someone else can have the same name I have.
I'm against any dev effort to free up names. I'd rather that payroll go to more powers, zones, content, etc. You see, you people not getting your names are STILL here... and unless you all decide to quit in large numbers no one really cares.
Now, don't think I wouldn't benefit from a name purge. I have a list of names ready to (try to) grab if a purge gets announced. I know someone with a list of names OTHER people want to use as trade bait if they get freed up (and I'm sure there are others who'd do the same).
I'd just rather see the dev payroll go to something else than devising purge systems and all that nonsense. I'd rather see a jetpack costume piece for everyone rather than see some dude get to name his character "Lightning." The most recent purge would only clear names that didn't even see a sewer run in a single afternoon, anyway (lvl 6 and lower or something). Very few of those Holy Grails would be freed up. -
Generally speaking, I'd suggest avoiding Pocket D like the plague. Since its inception, it's pretty much been the leper colony of the most stereotypical, overdone, angsty nonsense imaginable. While a lot of RPers do frequent the place, it seems to me that a lot more avoid it.
Of course, you might be interested in that stuff and different people have different experiences. At the very least, if you check it out, please don't use it as the yardstick of RP on Virtue. -
I'd be hard pressed to think of any groups that meet the OP description. At least, I haven't seen any in years.
Many SGs define "active" as "we log in once a week to reset our Last Online counter." If you do see some of them online, they are paired off under a tree somewhere, just wanting to monologue their unsolvable angst problem (that you just can't possibly understand!), or offering epiphanous insights into those abyss-like deep subjects that you couldn't care less about.
I find it sad to join a new SG (which has been around) and still end up in the top 3 prestige earners in just a couple weeks with a casually played alt. While I'm not, at all, into prestige farming (and have quit SGs that implemented prestige quotas), just as a measure of "helping out through normal play" that just shouldn't be the case. Or you see there's ten players on the SG's "Devoted OOC Channel" but none are talking, one might say hello in response to your own greeting, and all you get is crickets chirping when you ask if there's any action you can join in on.
I also find many themes too restrictive. We're all pixies, vampires, troubled teens, or stranded aliens from 1926 with a strong leaning towards going shirtless and wearing purple fedoras... And then when you find that group of "we're a team of superheroes!" they are named something like "xXMotherslaying Kill KillersXx - Beta Squad" or "Jesse's Justice Juice Stand."Jeez, please put some effort into having a name that doesn't totally suck or sound like it was made up in a thirteen year old's fanfic about brutal vigilantes.
I don't give a flying flip about a base. I have my own base, it's fully stocked, as far as I'm concerned (ok, I'd like to one day get the second tier autodoc). I want a group that functions as a group. Not in name. Not as alt parking. But actually adventures together and crap like that. It's amazing to me that most of the groups that actually group and run regular stuff also are big into PLing and farms while shunning roleplay.
I will also echo an earlier comment... so many people just want to join a winning team. Most of them have no interest in helping to make a winning team. I see groups with potential out there now and then... but its own members are terribly stagnant or can't understand why they aren't doing better (and then log off after only 5 minutes because no one else in the SG is online).
Obviously, I'm jaded... but I didn't get this way from good experiences. -
... that stink.
I'm all for it. Names without globals have been inactive, what, four years? They aren't coming back. Heck, I'm all for opening names that have been inactive for a year (but maybe not less... a year seems more than fair). And by that I mean ALL names, regardless of level achieved. Want to keep it? Re-up your sub 1 month a year. Don't care that much? Then let some other poor slob have at it and enjoy themself.
If it's really that "easy to make names" then the people coming back shouldn't have any trouble using their rename tokens.
That said, most folks are lucky, and I'm sure you're all happy, that I have no real say in the matter. -
Quote:LOL @ RP: Our Main Goal is to Find, Train and Retain players and teach them fundamental game mechanics, team building skills & leadership among all other things. We will never turn RP'rs away, but usually turn them into gaming addicts rather than help thier RP cravings. ***On a sidenote I find it insulting that you would insinuate that an SG has to even state thier RP activity or Lack There of so you can push your goal of making NON RP'rs unwelcome***, we are a Haven for NON RP'rs all around, and many wonderful players enjoy knowing that they have a place to get away from the wakos.
...and it's not insulting to call RPers wakos. RP level IS a good thing to list in a SG recruiting thread so people know if you do or don't, just like PvP and so on.
Considering Virtue is and has always been the unofficial gathering spot for the bulk of RPers, chosen before the game even launched, and the bulk of the population consisted of RPers (which is what baited the non RPers who can't handle Freedom to the server "I want a high pop, but not the highest...") you're just like a vegetarian who goes into a steakhouse and is offended by all the meat.
There is no "goal" of making non-RPers unwelcome, there are plenty of people who are not interested in RP who are great people, great players, and don't feel they have to annoy, harass, or insult others who enjoy things they don't... and there are plenty who do come along specifically to grief people just trying to enjoy their game their way. The latter is definitely unwelcome.
I wish you much success in your recruiting. It's much easier to avoid "unwelcome" people when they all willingly label themselves with their own rosa winkel (in this case: the same SG tag).
Have a peachy day! -
Um... this is a year old (excpet for the title). They showed it at the 08 convention, too.
-
Perhaps the OP just used a real bad made-up example. Personally, I find absolutely nothing humorous about subjecting someone with a phobia to the thing that frightens them and pretty much do not see how everyone involved can obviously see this is a great moment for comedy. I know most people get a great laugh out of taking someone afraid of heights and dangling them out of windows, if you have kids afraid of the dark, there's nothing more hilarious than locking them in a dark closet...but, really, the problem with Player X is more that he's a jerk.
I find online RPers, in general, to be far more queenish. If one seems to object to an action, the other never takes any steps to meet them halfway... they just get more and more defensive and insist that what they are doing is ok and go to all lengths to justify their offense, in turn making the other go to greater lengths to justify why they are offended. Heaven forbid the offender apologize and suggest they rewind a little... after all, the stupid action has happened and drama be damned, it must STAY in history, carved into stone for all eternity.
Then there's the ones who go around shoving a hot topic or generally unwelcome style of play into people's faces on purpose and then come crying about the bad reactions they get (not mentioning any names)
All this is also generally why most RP supergroups are horrific in their incestual nature, all made up of the alts of the same people with little crossover to other circles of RP supergroups. That they get constantly pestered by the overflow of Freedom-esque rejects only serves to drive them deeper into their ways. -

This is what I get for watching too much Kamen Rider...

I didn't think that was possible. -
[ QUOTE ]
Those of us who enjoy some aspect of realism in our superhero stories haven't been convinced by now, and you probably aren't going to be the extra-special person to do it.
[/ QUOTE ]
Similarly, not everyone is convinced that "realism" equates to pessimism, grittiness, emo & angst, and lack of hope. Calling the other styles of play silly and childish doesn't do much work, either.
When you add to that, the "Golden Age" was probably a lot more "realistic" than what is being described (with shootings, torture, etc, with the good guys sticking to their own morality, and heroes raised up by insane parents experimenting on them, being former drug runners, or witnessing their parents slaughtered in an alleyway) and it's no wonder there is confusion over what is being asked for.
For example, I find that to call out something like the X-Men as an example of "realistic" is just hilarious while, at the same time, finding Bill Willingham's old Elementals series might fit the bill (which others might find hilarious).

Oh sorry I forgot you all are Grammar Nazis.
[/ QUOTE ]
Since you claim to be dyslexic and are aware that you "suck" at grammar and spelling, I would assume it most likely that you'd also know your communication doesn't always come across clearly. In a text based medium, these are important things to work with or to be prepared to address in a manner that allows your reader to better handle what they are presented with.
Following up with an insult is a good way to make sure the "impossible task of starting a VG" is aptly described.
Gold stars for you, sunshine. You're a peachy-keen champ among champs.
Best of luck with your endeavor. -
Ha. Any team that "needs" heals is a team best avoided most of the time. Consider those broadcasts to be informative: "don't join this suck team." -
It's the friggin' Marksman! Great to see you again, Bruce. My question is: Are there plans for "career length" story arcs for all player types, similar to the kheldian/arachnos soldier arcs? While some might say this is part of the "epic reward," the prospect of more fun for all seems like a great idea.
Ps: Can I join your tabletop? I miss the good ol' days at Beresford. -
I'm afraid I have to add my voice to the "tired of them" group in terms of scheduled ones. They come too often and go on for too long. I much prefer the spaced out and random post-TF versions.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE event stuff like this. I'd just like to see more variety (heck, why not bring back a rare shadow shard breach or two... or have a riot... or gang war, you get the idea) or a little less frequency so that I don't ignore them or move away from the zone because the annoyance factor is larger than the fun factor.
I will say the big Rikti event thing I like is the level scaling. That can be used for *so* many things (SG-wide missions?). Clockwork scavengers flooding a zone like locusts. Hydraspawn spilling out of one of the many sewer doors. "Police crackdowns" on the redside.
The tools are built. Let the creativity flow (offer me a mini-pack to buy to fund it. Rocketpack costume pieces would sell wellhehe)

I agree with Jayboh, waiting so long for MoB? PLed much?. Seriously every person who plays a tank knows to take the first shield.
[/ QUOTE ]
With 2 lvl 50 tankers (1 invuln and 1 WP), I say Pshaw, you can put off the first shield until 20-22 easily. For some sets you can go later. -
Since we know the feature will be going through regardless of feedback, can we get an addition of "hide character from web page" to hide a character entirely? That will make life a lot easier for those of us who don't want to participate.
-
I, too, would really rather see it default to enabled (hidden) so that people who don't want this information out there to display or those ignorant of this feature don't get caught with their pants down, so to speak. Not everyone reads the message boards and these announcements (even if listed on the launch screen)... I've seen plenty of folks ask questions about things that have been announced.
Is this tied into/display global? Globals are a big pain in the neck for a lot of people and there are some folks who still dislike the entire global name system (I'm one, I still want global tells separated from normal tells so I can take them out of the chat box since CSR/GM staff does jack squat about harassment).
I'll be going through all my characters and turning all these features off. -

Hmmm guess I could help my tiny (3 person/4toon) VG on Virtue by using those trial codes I have laying around, dual boxing, and inviting a horde of useless alts. Just seems an annoying and akward reward that promotes the wrong type of play (I suspect to hear a lot of recruiting going on and a lot of people after the awarding complaining about being kicked from their SG, not everyone is aware of this upcoming award so may think they're getting legit SG invites).
[/ QUOTE ]
Well, more like it rewards a "different" kind of play than a "wrong" kind of play. We've got lots of members and we try to welcome everyone's alts and still enjoy being able to invite folks who we've played with for a while who might also have lots of alts, etcetera, and it's a pain to have to maintain (at least one) overflow-SG whose members have only limited access to the Main SG's facilities.
[/ QUOTE ]
He was referring, of course, to making a bunch of disposable alts with trial accounts to pad out the SG which I think is fair to call "the wrong style of play." Try harder not to read things that aren't being stated, he didn't mention lesser played alts, at all. -
I'm kind of missing the "improvements."
It looks like now it's even longer (have to fight giant monsters to spawn him) and there's a greater possibility of me being cut off from my friends/groups/whatever with a heavy handed zone cap.
Since the spawn can be forced, is the trial difficulty severely reduced to accomodate, say, an 8 man team? It would seriously STINK if you are in "The Hive 5" with 7 other people while there are 4 other Hive instances doing the trial and you are just sitting there waiting for more people to show up (who will, no doubt, be going into earlier instances as space is made).
I'd much rather see an instanced thing. Trying to maintain the "social event" part of it is just looking at a bunch of REALLY bored people trying to pass time... not a socializing mecca. On most raids this past month or so, I see more and more comments from people saying "I can't wait for the changes and the instanced trial" (this includes raid leaders). -
Does /settitle still work? I can find some guides with updated numbers and such but the command just seems to clear my title
Thanks! -

I agree. Nice work.
The thing with Kels is that unlike your other heroes they have set origins & some pre-existing back ground. So u r kinda restricted when it comes to make a BG for them.
[/ QUOTE ]
I don't think of it this way. I kinda think of it as the devs giving you inspiration to work out your background. I've seen some people make some really cool backgrounds for their khelds.

I find it rather restrictive, myself. To the point of disliking the ATs for the most part. -

I don't like this. Here's why: I have my Medic set to Defensive/Follow, so that he doesn't run about blasting everything with his subar damage. Instead, he heals. Now, he's going to be taking a beating instead of giving a healing.
[/ QUOTE ]
Why are you taking a beating? And if you're taking enough of a beating that it would hinder your medic, how are you alive?
[/ QUOTE ]
I stand beside my henchmen, with force fields up, NOT PFF, rebubbling and directing.
Why? What difference does it make?
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm just trying to understand the problem. Your medic will only be taking a portion of the damage that you would have taken at a 2:1 ratio. I guess I'm just trying to figure out how this is harming what you do. Is your Mastermind taking enough damage that it would kill your medic to receive 1/3rd of it through bodyguard? I'm not sure on the HP ratios, but how exactly are you surviving this now?
I guess I'm trying to figure out how this is actually hurting your medic.
[/ QUOTE ]
You have to keep in mind that the medic is lower level than you, so even though he's only taking 1/3 of the damage, that same 1/3 is a higher percentage of his overall health.
What is a tier 1 minion's health compared to the MM when he's conning green, anyway?
