I theme my characters by server and used it to move one character who I decided would fit better on a different server, that's about all I've used it for myself, but I can see the value of it, for PvPers, special events and to free up slots in anticipation of GR.

It's also the best possible answer to complaints from people that their server is 'dead'.

I'll just have to hope that a smile and a nod on the global channel of my choice will still get my non-uber characters in for an ITF, and I'll just have to regret that the hundred or more hours on that character didn't get me into the new endgame.
I doubt CoH's end-game will lead to the kind of widespread elitism that runs wild on other games. My impression is that a lot of players take a kind of pride in disregarding the "we need a tank, we need a healer" approach to team building and they won't be shouting in broadcast for gearscore and linked achievements (or the equivalent.)

In fact I suspect that if the devs ever did devise a TF that they said required a specific set up of ATs or a certain level of enhancements, some people would take it as a personal challenge to try and complete the TF with an all-Defender PUG slotted with SOs.

The great thing is... they'd probably succeed.

    New to game

    Play Villains. They're more fun.

Brutes are good; Masterminds are sometimes a bit dull until you get used to them (at which point they become awesome); if you like stealth and one-shot killing your opponents try a Stalker.

Better yet try them all, and all the others as well.

Oh, and at level 5 you'll get a pop up from a contact called the Architect Entertainment Manager. IGNORE him. In fact stay out of the AE building altogether, at least for a while until you've seen the world.

    And play Villains

I rarely heal my pets when I'm teamed, and given the choice between a teammate or a pet I'd heal the teammate, since compared to the easily resummoned pet, a teammate (usually) has more powers and slightly better AI.
  5. Very expensive common salvage has its advantages. My lowbies frequently finance their early DO or SO buys by selling the Luck Charms that dropped when they were beating up Hellions in AP.

However I do believe in the heroes who tell me I will make a difference. Maybe its not my magic but instead my Sprinting , Brawling or Apprentice Charm that will help turn the tide. However in a moment of doubt I ran to Wentworth's and put a down payment on a St Louis Slammer to be delivered before we leave tomorrow. So tommorrow if I can't use my anti-technology magic then I will be casting Apprentice Charm with all my might. If the Apprentice Charm fails me then its up to the St Louis Slammer. Then I will utter the last magic phrase I know, "Lets Play Two", and it will have to be enough.

    The Magic Number
I actually found this one quite touching.

    I've never actually done it.

Oddly enough I now feel a real craving to do it at least once before the revamp goes live, just to say I have, and see if it's really as horrible as everyone says it is.
  8. The Posi TF revamp is interesting. I'd like to take that as a sign that more of the older blueside content is going to get the redo it needs.

All told it looks pretty good for what I imagine a lot of people were expecting to be a filler issue.
  9. Ghosts always run. I remember doing an Arachnos Ghost Story on a NRG/Dark Corruptor and every time I hit one of them with Darkest Night he'd run like heck, and if I forgot to drop the DN he'd usually come back with 3 or 4 of his pals that he'd run through and aggro'd... I hit a personal record of 9 faceplants for a single mission while trying to complete that one.

I wonder if they've ever considered implementing the WoW AI where certain foes always run when their HPs get low, and come back with reinforcements. Frustrating sometimes, until you learn how to handle it, but much more challenging, and realistic, than the random runs we get at the moment.

Anyway, it's always fun taking out a fleeing opponent with a ranged attack - the tier 1 Dual Pistols is great for that. Something about the pose just exudes contempt for the cowardly foe

  12. Don't forget Zorro.

Realism always seems like a curious card to play in a game where my natural MM can shrug off half a dozen bursts of automatic gunfire (assuming the pets are standing close enough) and MA scrappers can beat up Malta Titans with their bare hands (and feet) to give only two of many many many examples.

All kidding aside, I'd have thought Reichsman or the Clockwork King would be more likely to stake a claim to Boomtown. Better yet both of them.

Giant Nazi robots vs Giant Clockwork robots now please

Is it really any worse than all these 'heroes' I see in Atlas with names like BLOODEATER, with bios that are far more bloodthirsty than anything I've seen on Redside?

I rolled a hero MM a while ago, a Thugs/FF who claims to be a renegade Longbow agent but is actually still an agent and is working to convince street gang members to do some good in the Isles. Funnily enough I didn't roll her with GR in mind - more an experiment to see if I could level a villain up through regular content without fighting ANY Longbow. So far so good.

(I did consider /Traps, but couldn't quite justify Detonator. I figure with FF she's picked up one of the generators used by the Ballista...)

According to the wiki 1 real time hour = 2 in-game days.

I've never liked that. It gives me no sense of time at all, since if I enter a mission door at night I'll exit into daylight 15 minutes later. I also have to wonder how that will work with the new shadows in ultra-mode, which, as it stands at the moment, will move ludicrously quickly surely?
  17. CO hasn't turned out to be the death knell of CoH some people were expecting it to be, leaving COH in a very good position to place itself as the 800lb gorrila of superhero MMOs before DCUO even comes out.

    (Alright, alright, the 400lb gorrila...)

It won't beat the newer games on visuals (although I16 and UM mean it won't lose as much ground as it could have on that score...) but on content. The amount of content in the game, and the free updates, were one of the sticks being used to beat Cryptic with over in the CO forums, and I'm sure DCUO can expect the same. Is it fair that a brand new game should have to compete with a 6 year established title for content? No, but too bad - if they intend to compete they'll have to.

Which is why I think the amount of new content in GR is so important. I'll be buying it whatever happens (too many DP/ concepts lined up not to!) but I want to see it with enough new game content that will impress a lot of other people and make them want to buy it as well.

And this has nothing to do with powerset choices just the class in general. The whole concept is cool at first, but getting it to work is a real pain.
I think part of it is down to Masterminds being Easy Mode. If you leave the difficulty sliders at their default you can sleepwalk through just about anything. The player I mentioned with all the pool powers was surprised that I was running the team on Relentless, which (pre-I16) I'd always considered the default setting for a high level team.

/Poison's big problem is that the two core powers of the set - Weaken and Envenom - do no damage and don't even have a particularly noticeable visual effect. Until you look at what they're doing under the hood so to speak it's easy to get the impression that they're not doing much at all.

(Or until you get hit with them yourself. In a PvP duel a /poison MM hit my stalker with Weaken. My primary was Ninja Blade/ but for the next few attacks I felt like I'd repecced into Kitten Melee/.)
  19. Play more redside.

CoH has some good arcs, but they're buried in a lot of (frequently defeat all) filler missions that can quickly become boring. CoV arcs are usually shorter and faster moving, and the contacts are mostly well written with actual personalities.

Seer Marino and Marshall Brass are probably the earliest examples of contacts who give out mission arcs that really matter. They're both in the 15-20 range and I highly recommend them. Seer Marino's arc in particular, Oh Wretched Man, is the best story telling I've come across in this game. Better than most single player games in fact.

But you will have to read the mission briefs and the clues (especially the clues) to get the most out of it.

Makes perfect sense. We all know there's no such thing as continuing development.
    It's a perfectly legitimate concern.

The 1-20 thing has been kicked around the forum for months. During all that time there hasn't been one reliable word that I'm aware of confirming that this won't be the case.

Still, all will be revealed, presumably, within the next few weeks. I'd be very surprised (and a little concerned) if GR goes up for pre-purchase without a LOT more information than we have at the moment.

In the real world the US/UN would publically call upon Lord Recluse to improve his human rights record, while privately being grateful to him for exercising some level of control over hundreds or thousands of super villains by recruiting them for Project Destiny and his private war against Statesman and Paragon City.

Besides, and leaving aside the question of 'collateral damage' (i.e. the murder of millions of innocent civilians in the Isles), who's to say it would even work? Arachnos has some very advanced technology and a missile shield wouldn't be beyond their capabilities. Or perhaps the US could invade to force regime change, then be left with the task of occuping a country full to the brim with super powered psychopaths who regularly fend off Rikti Invasions without breaking sweat. Yeah, that would work...

    Which they haven't.
    And won't.

Dual Pistols is a cool set, and I've little doubt that Demon Summoning will be as well, and I'm looking forward to playing them in March and April instead of July. And since I managed to mess up on the loyalty program when my subscription lapsed 8 days before the program ended this is probably my best shot at GR beta access as well. Win/Win really.

I don't see the fuss. It's not like we're being asked to pay for it twice (the item pack is optional after all, and I'll pick it up at a later date, or on my second account, maybe, if it has cool stuff.)
  25. Thugs: Smarten these guys up and get them into some sharp suits, either Family style (but not purple please!) or Miami Vice style (which I'd switch Nightshade's henchmen to in an instant)

Necromancy: Skeletons! Cimerora is already like something out of a Ray Harryhausen movie, so give us Skeletons ala Jason and the Argonauts.

I'd also like some less fantasy looking options for the Grave Knights and the Lich (and the zombies I suppose) Tattered modern day clothing.

Ninjas - Suits, shades and Yakuza style tattoos.

Mercenaries - I'd just be happy with a redo of the existing models, which with the exception of the spec ops are either extremely antiquated looking (soldiers) or completely cliched (Rambo... er, I mean the Commando)

    Bots I'm pretty happy with.
