I think one of them mentioned, during the proliferation preview/chat/whatever, that they were looking at porting every possible set around.

Then again, we may never know unless they say it themselves. So this is mostly speculations.

As for the topic at hand; I'm guessing someone hasn't played with Defenders a lot? Or even played one, for that matter.
I mean, making a whole team, or even a league, indestructible, unstoppable or whatever you want to call it, is hardly 'useless'. Especially when there are still many ATs, or even powersets, who do not build for the softcap, let alone the resist cap (beside Warshades, I can't think of anyone who can have capped resistances). And there aren't that many powersets that can reach the damage cap. Oh, and I don't think there's a recharge cap.

Really, if you want to see how useful Defenders are, I suggest using your EYES and keeping track of some of your stats (say, defenses when playing with a FF/, resistances when playing with a Sonic/ or (soon) a Thermal/. And don't forget your damage when going around with a Kin/).

Oh, and look at those orange numbers, will you? I've started playing a Rad/Sonic and while I don't make a whole team bulletproof, -anything- melts in front of them. Why? Because I apply a ton of -res and other nasty things to whatever comes at the team.

Could I do this as a Controller? No, because they don't have Sonic Blast. Yea, the debuffs would still be good, just not of the same magnitude.
Could I do this as a Corruptor? Maybe, since they do have Sonic Blast and Radiation Emission. But have you looked at the numbers? 5% more -res on all the blasts with -res and Innervating Field has 7.5% more -res. How does this translate in practice? 7.5% more damage to any foe affected by IF and 5% more damage, per blast application, to a single target.
That red/purple boss over there? He'll take a second or two more than the minions, tops.
  2. I'd go as Katana/Dark Armor/Mu Mastery and get into a Sith warrior theme or something similar, personally.
Dual Blades might be good too.

Other than that, I believe most of what I can think of has been mentioned.
  3. I got two lotg 7.5% from gold.
Haven't rolled since, considering my luck I'd probably get some Dark Watcher's DESPAIR or something.

I've read that, as a general rule, 35-39 silver and 25-29 bronze, aka 555 silver and 65 bronze, are the bests for maximizing costs, chance to get good stuff and all that. So I roll them quite often and I get some good stuff.

Other than that, my personal advice is; if you can afford the time spent deleting/vendoring recipes, then bronze is probably the best way to go.

I haven't spent a lot of time reading up on what's what and everything, but from what I understand, you can get most, if not all, of the good stuff that's in silver from bronze. And for about 1/10 the cost. There's obviously a lot more crap in bronze, but as I mentioned, if you have the time for it, you might end up with the good stuff you'd get from silver plus some leftover tickets that can be spend on moar bronze rolls.

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but I've been on a series of Lambda where dancing during the Marauder cutscene is the 'in' thing to do, so there's always a bunch of people doing it.
I'd say, more then half the time, someone will aggro him and either drag him out (intentionally or not) or bring him to the league.

It's been putting me off from doing some recently, but with the OP's post, I might have regained enough faith to run a few...

I'm just going to hop in here and mention that putting the stealth IO in CJ on my Fort build was my WORST decision ever (on that character).

Also, it's not like if the end cost was actually troublesome, since you're only using Sprint to stealth (when slotted with the IO, obviously) through stuff. Once you arrive at your destination, you can just toggle if off.
  6. hmm..

    Dark/Ice, Fire or Dark
    Cold/Ice or Fire
    and I'm enjoying that Rad/Sonic a bunch...
plus there's the possibility to remake my Thermal Corr.
Without forgetting that Empathy. Should really convince a few other players to roll a bunch of Defenders.

Well, I might not have time for a MA/ Scrapper anytime soon!
  7. I've decided to try out Rad/Sonic and see if it's a feeling that suits me.
Made it through the tutorial and the first 5 levels quite easily.
The sound on Sonic Blast was really one of the two things that put me off from the set originally. Now that I don't play with sound, or that it's usually quite low enough to not hear them, all that remains to irk me is the animations, but that's more of a concept problem (as in, I can't seem to fit them in any concept).

As for Dark/ I've settled on waiting for issue 21 and then decide on /Ice or /Fire to go with it.

On Empathy/, I'll be keeping away from the set until I can rely on a leveling partner or two, as I have a very bad luck when it comes to finding 'decent' teams throughout the first 20 or 30 levels.
Oh, and please don't turn this thread into a 'Empath is guud' vs 'Empath is bewd' thread. I'd really appreciate it

Cold/ is something that I've tried on a Controller, but got tired of it rather quickly. Perhaps I did not reach a high enough level, or simply made poor power choices (Superior Invisibility and Arctic Fog isn't a good idea), but I'm thinking that using the set on a Defender, who gets the powers earlier, might be worth a try.

As to keep the discussion going, if anyone is interested, I'd like to hear a little about Dark Blast and Psychic Blast, and if they could be considered worthwhile option for a solo heavy Defender. I've read that Psychic/ for Blasters is pretty meh. As for /Dark on Defenders, I remember reading that it's rather low on the damage side.

As for personal experience, I've seen a bunch of Defenders with either set running around, but most of them hardly ever blast away at things. Most of them are Empathy, but some were also Dark/, Kin/ and Cold/ (and possibly other sets that I've forgotten).

Obviously enough, my own perspective of the matter is somewhat biased, as I've only seen Defenders running in groups and they tend to make use of their primary sets more than playing as a pseudo Blaster (at least in those circumstances).

Thanks for all the replies, by the way. It's really helpful to hear others' thoughts on the matter.
  8. First of all, thanks for all the replies!

Now, with so many of you mentioning Rad/Sonic, I'd definitely need to look into one of those. Although if I had to say that there's a blast set that I've always been leaning away from, it's Sonic, it's still an interesting option.

Dark/ was possibly the set which I felt like choosing, so that Dark/Ice or Fire fender or even a corr might prove quite interesting.

As for Empathy, it was really more on my sight because I've been thinking of making a group of Defenders with a few buddies of mine, but I can see why it's not that great at soloing.

I've known that Traps/ was a good set to kill Big Bad Guys with, but since I already have a Fire/Traps corr in the making (read: soon), I've been keeping away from it.
That being said, it's nice to see that there are more choices then 'go rad or traps or go home'.

On another note, I've read that the Longbow Cataphract has some pretty insane -Regen. How well would Storm/ fair against some of the real Big Bad Guys with that -Regen?
  9. Hello all, I'll try to keep this relatively short while still putting out the necessary information.

While I used to be a very support-oriented player in my past gaming experience, I've come to enjoy playing more offensive type of characters in the recent past. More recently, though, I have come to the conclusion that I want to make a Defender.
Now, this might seem rather strange coming from a player who defines himself as a 'support type', but I've never made a Defender before. The closest that I got to was when I made my Fire/Thermal Corruptor, a few years ago.

That being said, I am not looking to simply roll a Defender by picking X primary and Y secondary. If I wanted that, I'd have rolled one already and wouldn't have spent time on writing this!
So, I am looking for your thoughts, personal experience and whatnot, anything that could prove useful to enlighten me as to which combination of power sets can accomplish 'great things'.

These 'great things', that I've mentioned twice now, might not be so great for others, though. What I am looking for is the ability to solo remarkably well (aka to not be dependent on a team) up to the point where I could take on AVs and, possibly with the use of temporary powers and/or inspirations (but looking for the possibility of neither), GMs.
Soloing bosses (and elite bosses) have been an easy task for most of my characters; it's the kind of thing that comes somewhat naturally (exploiting terrain, flight, the non-immunity to mez effects on some/most, timing inspirations, etc.). On the other side, facing off against much tougher foes, who would normally require a team to defeat, is something that I've never done before and have been wanting to get around to doing for quite a while.

Now, while I understand that Defenders are probably the most team oriented AT in CoX and soloing stuff isn't necessarily their forte, I've decided to at least give it a thought by making this post and, hopefully, give it a try by making a 'fender in-game.

Really, in short, I'm just making a character to visit my roots as a gamer again and want it to be more than 'just another 50' (not that all of my characters are the same, mind you) by doing something that I've wanted to for quite some time.

As a final note, and to start the discussion, I've been looking at Dark/, Empath/, Rad/, Sonic/ and Storm/, mostly, but it's sure been a long time since I've taken a close look at the buffing and debuffing sets in this game, so any suggestions or comments are welcome.
  10. I think it's time for a multicolor hair suggestion.

Anyone up for it or should I be the one to look like a total buffoon ?

I'm sure there were other farms before those, but these two were the first ones that I was introduced to.
The only thing that AE did was simplify farming and change the zone in which it was done. Don't let the idea that because you didn't see people advertising for farms, there weren't any fool you. (hope I worded that correctly) Farming is a common practice throughout just about every MMO. Especially more so if players can greatly benefit from it (Powerleveling comes to mind).

Now, with that out of the way, I'd mention Katana/Willpower or Regeneration works wonders. It's also the first thing that popped in my head when I read your post; seems to fit everything just fine.

Mace/ has some nice mitigation tools, so that might be an option to consider. Though I'd guess the redraw on Mace/Regen may not be to your liking (I know it isn't for me).

I've seen a bunch of BS/Inv characters running around and I'm about to roll one... if I can find the time to do so. Guessing there's some sort of conspiracy or something

Almost everything can have good damage, to be honest. Especially if you pick an AT that is meant to dish it out, it'll be really hard to pick something that won't deal enough.

As for the 'light on the inf' part, you can decide to stick with SOs or just the common IOs. Both are fairly 'cheap' and affordable. If you feel the need to invest more into your character, you can then decide to move on to set IOs.

Also, you can get fairly lucky in terms of drops. Especially more so if you decide to do TFs and the likes as you level. Reward Merits can come in quickly easily and will grant you access to a large variety of IOs.
Once you hit level 20, you can start doing tip missions; if you do hero or villain tips as a hero or villain (respectively), you'll end up getting an Alignment Merits every two days or so (depending on your frequency of doing said tip missions). These Merits can also be spend on some expensive IOs (Luck of the Gambler 7.5% global recharge for 2 H/V Merits comes to mind).

You could also play the market for inf, but that's subject to taste. I know that I'm not that good at it and find it rather 'plain', but it is a nice source of income.

Beside that, I'd say; look at all the weapon sets (if you haven't already) and try to picture your future character. If only for a moment, it can very well get you started.
Bonus points if you try the sets up to level 5-10 to get a certain feeling of how it goes with each one.

    Hope this helps.
  12. The archetype that, not only do you enjoy playing, but that you also have the patience and determination to bring it through all content (1-50, incarnate, etc.), as well as invest in a build.

If you're talking about numbers and how good it looks on paper, I'd say either a Crab or a Warshade. While the Warshade would probably require more finesse, it still has a lot of tools that other archetypes are lacking.

As for my personal choice, I'd say an Arachnos Widow. Doesn't matter if it's a Fortunata or Night Widow, either can be the cherry on my cake. Or pie... hmmm pie..
  13. I'd like Sonic to get something shiny. Possibly new. A buff to the set? Eh, it probably doesn't need it, to be honest.

I haven't seen many people run with Sonic, so I'd like to set to be more attractive, but not necessarily outright buffed or reworked or whatnot. I'd call it a tweak, but that's just me.

If I could name my pets, I dunno, I'd probably find a name that would fit the maximum number of characters available. But that's just me.

Some recent patch notes, in this thread:
    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=264322

If you scroll down to Steampunk Pack and look under Female, the before-last line says:
Removed red lip color on Victorian face

I'm thinking this is it, but I personally have no idea, as I haven't used that face option yet.
    Hope this helps.

  20. Squishy, squishy, somewhat less squishy and squishy.

Of course, that's fire and that also means a load of damage to drop things faster then they drop you.

I'd like to mention that BS/Fire has the drawback of, well, redraw whenever you'd use any of the click powers of /Fire. Personally, that's enough to drive me away from the combination, but if you're fine with it, then by all means consider it an option.

I'd think Fire/Fire would be better on a Brute, considering Fury would increase the aura's damage. You'd also have a taunt aura to keep mobs from scattering.
Obviously, everything is left to your preferences. Some players have no trouble with fleeing mobs.

Now I wonder if the DoT component of Fire/'s attacks increase when you score a critical hit on a Scrapper.. hmm..

Yes, the one that sticks around, when you don't need it.
Yes, it's also the one who's preventing you from using cloaks, wings and other back details on your Soldier.

If only it could disappear when I decide to play whack-a-mole, I'd probably play my Soldier more often.
  22. Just a few thoughts that crossed my mind while reading this thread.

I've seen a bunch of Broad Sword / Invulnerability Scrappers running around. So much, that it's starting to get my interested spiked.

I'd like to give a special mention to Super Strength. I never really thought I could enjoy the set so much (had never made it pass 20 before and decided to give it a go recently -good stuff).

WM/EA is pretty. And strong. And will be stronger. And maybe prettier too.

I've heard great things about Fire/Shield. Well, more about Dark/Shield, but still, Fire/Shield looks promising from my point of view.

With WP and SR being in the 'close to no click powers' and the OP seeking a change of pace, I'd mention Dark Armor and Fire Armor as possible choices. I've been enjoying Dark Armor a bunch more then Fire, to be honest, but Fire is by no means bad.
Since both sets are not heavily defense based, you're mostly relying on hitting fast and hard, while still watching for those times when you need that click-heal.

I don't have much experience with Electric Armor, but it seems to be fairly similar (resistance based more then defense, click-heal, etc.) to Dark and Fire.

Katana is generally perceived as superior to Broad Sword, mostly because their main difference is in animation time. Don't let that stop you from rolling a BS/ if that's what you're looking for though.

There isn't much more to add from my side, unless more information comes in
Hope this can help you decide.

Free transfers? Aren't we talking about new players coming in for the first time?

There is a huge difference between those, to be honest.
Players who are, well, already playing are less likely to change servers, considering there are many factors which may hold them onto their existing servers (friends, supergroups, the general community, etc.).

On the other hand, new players? New players don't want a half-dead server. I'm pretty sure everyone can be quite guilty of that. Just try a free to play game. Pick one, any of them, as long as it has multiple servers. Which server would you choose? The one that only had a single bub out of three? Isn't that server less likely to have players running around, forming groups and providing help than the one who has two or three bubs out of three?
The main reason behind a new player's server selection is generally the population of said server. Since, really, there isn't anything else that the new player can base himself on.

It really feels like CoX:Freedom will be relying on the returning players to boost up the population on the low-pop servers and make them attracting to new players.

People WILL choose the most crowded servers to play on when they start a new game, almost without fail. Freedom and Virtue are ALREADY under heavy load and contain most of the game's population.

I just think that spreading the new influx of players to servers that NEED more players, instead of two that are already stuff to the gills, would be a GOOD thing.
As someone who has been thinking of making alts on another server once Freedom goes live, I'm also concerned about this. If the huge influx of -new- players decide to play on the Freedom or Virtue server, and not on the others, well these other servers will surely become underpopulated.

Really, from a first glimpse at the replies, I think some may have missed the point (possibly blinded by the 'idea' in the OP).

Oh and yea, that's how I chose to play on Freedom when I first started playing. Pick the highest populated server and roll. Granted it wasn't specifically my idea (to roll on Freedom) at the time, but still, I can see many new players making that same decision and leaving the other lower populated server, well, with a lower population.

Would be pretty neat if there was a customizable option to do so (say, kind of like changing the colors on the Judgement or Destiny powers at a tailor).
For those of us who can very easily fit in using non-ghostly essences into our character concept, that would be awesome.
