You really have to get rid of that chip on your shoulder. There is so *incredibly* much given away free in this game to *everyone,* then there's the stuff people pay for - and then - do I have to put this in large font, underline, bold, etc. for you again like the last time? - there's stuff given as a thank you for loyalty.
Now, what happens if the person who's stuck with the game for five years and gets these thank you bits suddenly sees a new, 0-month player with them? Not much of a thanks.
How about the person who buys them - they now no longer have any sort of reward, or "thanks for staying loyal" going for them. They're now self-screwed out of the entire program.
And I'll say it again - I would actually benefit from being able to pre-purchase them. I have two accounts. One's something like a year and a half behind the other, I'd be able to "catch up" with this - and I still feel it's a horrible, awful idea that should never see the light of day.
Then again, I don't see it as "screwing everyone else" when someone gets, say, a discount for being with the insurance company longer, gets extra days off due to seniority or whatnot. -
I'd argue about the tier9 not being useful - whiel not used constantly, it certainly is. But that's not what the post is about.
Right now, yes, people DO use Burn's scatter for survivability. OTOH, it makes it useless to people like me for the very reasons you mentioned - I play quite a few fire tanks (and one DB/Fire scrapper.) Chasing the mobs away from me like that doesn't help at all.
Personally, I'd rather see it go the "hot feet" path - keep the scatter because of how people DO use it, but add a slow. If that means taking away the immob protection (moving it elsewhere) or something, fine - but keeping the mobs close to me, where my tanks can maintain aggro, is far more important IMHO. Right now, for me, it's a skippable power. -

Quote:None, as purchasing them (even "back-purchasing" them) makes them cease to be veteran rewards.
Either way, it's not specifically about me, though I did use myself as an example. My main question, I guess, boils down to "At what price would it be reasonable for people to buy Veteran Rewards that they had missed due to their accounts being closed?"
If you want to purchase shinies, there are the costume packs. -

I believe the first time the script was run (with the "35 and under, inactive for 90+ days") was around COV's release. The second one, set for under level 6, roughly a year later - with that level set because that's where most of the names taken *were.*
FWIW:
- I *despise* the idea of being Memphis Bill@global. And I'd find seeing my global behind the character it came from to look just horrid. (IOW, "global@global.")
- I'm reasonably sure the spammer accounts are flat-out nuked, given all the "Empty" in them. Only time outside of spammers I've seen that is when I had email from someone who deleted the character it came from. And while most of those names are gibberish, there are a few - potentially hijacked accounts, but still - that have "character" names.
- There are two ways I'd be fine with nuking names. One, trials that haven't converted to full accounts after, say, 90 days. This should, of course, be fully disclosed when making the trial account. The other would be for inactive accounts - have an option on the account page to "Release name lock" or something similar, and make reference to it in the reactivation weekend emails. (There should also be an option to just "Delete account and all characters" on the same page.) Put that option to go farther in the hands of the customer (or former customer.) -
Quote:Eh, I try to avoid all the windows and lights and things.
Current case - nice to work in.
New system is going in either this or this, most likely.
Heh. Yeah, skyscrapers are gettign popular. I still like my Zalman 9500s. though. -
Quote:Did you bother reading the cut/paste? Have an answer to the loss of SGs, the loss of time putting the SGs together, the loss of bases, the loss of a great deal of stuff in storage, what to do with people who are seasonally out and would only come back to a no-longer-extant server (and all the stuff in their SGs gone) and the like? There are ways to deal with this.
You could offer free transfers off a server that is going to be merged. Offer free name change tokens.
Or you could skip the merge and just offer free transfers off dying servers.
No? Or are you just going to *assume* the SG, the bases, etc. can be moved? And what if not everyone goes to the same servers - or some choose to stay?
I have a better idea. Shut down Freedom, and force the people there to spread out to the other servers. I *like* my servers. I like Pinnacle, Guardian, Victory, Infinity, Champion, Triumph and the like.
Don't like that solution? Then keep yer damn hands off MY servers. -
Quote:Rgh. Wish I could find a copy of this bit I wrote, which had a reporter from the Rogue Isles (undercover) sending back stories from Paragon - one of which put a similar twist on new heroes and Longbow in the newbie areas. My "reporter" wrote about Longbow starting an attack on some Hellions who were just standing around - attacking the gang members with automatic weapons and a flamethrower, of course. The gist being that this excessive force was done very blatantly and openly to let these new "heroes" know what would happen to them if they didn't toe the line.Longbow, on the other hand, are constantly portrayed as "the good guys." Our heroes are forced to swallow their rhetoric. Our villains are forced to fight them because they are "good" and we are "evil."
And this is the only time heroes are allowed to so much as question Longbow's motives and procedures. -
*nod* Yeah, I already have the system mostly priced out. Components now, depending on if I go AMD or Intel = around $1100-$1200, and that's with splurging on one or two items (I'm picky about cases, and the two I'm looking at - both coolermaster, both apparently wonderful to work in - run about $200 sans power supply.) No SSDs or anything fancy, twin "good old fashioned" HDs - and the prices on some of those components will likely go down by the time I buy them.

I'm making sure to have a space set for an alt, regardless - but yeah, I want to see what's in it. (And to see how close it is to the various suggestions, including mine, over the years. I want gremlins. >.> )

Quote:I'm probably half agreeing, half disagreeing with you. Yes, heavily purpling is part of min/maxing - but paying a bit extra (or turning a lucky drop into INF to buy one) for an interesting proc, or just extra strength on something (past a normal set or IO value) is worth it, too. Even if you don't min/max, throwing (say) Contagious Confusion into a confuse (or arctic air,) or a chance for hold into an AOE immobilize, could well be worth it for you.Purples aren't worth it to me, because of how i play the game.
I'm the type of guy who has fun building the hero, and the concept, more then min maxing out his/her/it's powers. I enjoy having a small army of heros and villians i can play, instead of one or two really really powerful ones.
I've got 30 level 50 heros/villians. (20 heros 10 villians) They are all IO'ed out. But not min/maxed to the extream. The money and time it'd take too purple all of the out... I tend to franken slot, and by cheaper IO's, focusing on getting the most out of each individual power then more then getting a ton of set bonuses. Set bonues to me are a secondary priority, nice, but never at the expense of a powers effectiveness.
This approuch allows me to have 30 "good" playable toons to pick from, at the expence of having one really tricked out toon. All of my guys play at a level i'm happy with, in a teaming enviroment. None of them can solo AV's or GM's, but that's not really something that intrestes me.
but all of the above is how i enjoy the game. Others, like Bill, find more enjoyment in having one over the top kick @$$ powerhouse that can do nearly anything by himself. And that's great.
It's kind of nice to have a game that allows two people with differents tastes to enjoy different aspecs of the same game now isn't it?
So, my advice is, if your into Min/Maxing, Purples are worth it. If not, then, it's prolly overkill.
Not min/maxing. Just something "extra." -
Quote:I'd say try it anyway. It's worth the money to put in the little bit of time, and really - if something doesn't fit, or if you're having to push to get it in there, whatever it is is either turned around or doesn't go there in the first place.Er. Me.
Becuase frankly, A) While I can upgrade individual components within my PC (and do), actually building one from scratch would make my head spin.
A couple hundred bucks? I hope you're talking about system price - which itself is false, unless you're looking at a new system anyway. Windows 7 = 32 and 64 bit in the same package. Same product key. Every windows 7 box you get (retail, not sure about OEM) = both versions.Quote:As a result, I'm not exactly willing to drop another couple hundred bucks to pick up a 64-bit OS when my current one seems to run just fine for pretty much everything I chuck at it.
/agree. And it won't be. Most games scale anyway - whatever it is you're playing might not be the prettiest on low to mid-range hardware, but it'll still run. I don't care if it can run 593 FPS on a 3200x2600 resolution. I'm happy with my 22" widescreen, 1680x1050. Run smoothly at that, let me turn some toys on, and I'm happy.Quote:...there's a strange undercurrent of elitism running through certain members of this thread: "Ultra mode should only be for teh hardcorez gamerz who have loads of cash to spend on their system to keep it bleeding edge"...which frankly, isn't good business for Paragon, 'cause that is NOT where the majority of PC gamers are.
(That said, I'll likely have a new system either built or in the works by the time GR goes live anyway - this one's over 3 years old now, some portions are as upgraded as they *can* be, or close to it, so it's getting to be time.) -
Quote:What about those that post and have no issues with it? Or those who don't post because... they have no issues with it? Rather hard to count that last group. If you're just going by those who complain in a support (even unofficial support) area, well, every product is "*censored.*"Just drop by the tech support forums and look at all of the people having massive issues with Microsoft's latest effort.
And how many of those issues are, frankly, user created?
(For the record - Win7 Home Premium, 64 bit, no issues at all - with *any* program I've thrown at it, I should add.) -
As much as I like the company, generally like the devs and what they bring to us, and love the game, I have to admit - at times, it seems the people behind the game have a short attention span.
What do I mean by this? I mean ideas, items and projects brought into the game (or related areas, such as the website,) shown off a bit - then forgotten.
By this, I don't mean things like PVP - we know there's (supposedly) long-haul work to be done, and I expect it to get more attention, though we'll see it in dribs and drabs, sometimes as a tweak to a powerset or AT, other times as a whole. Nor do I mean things like the comics (though I'd love to see them back,) stopped for economic reasons, or the City Vault, which had major technical issues. No, by this I mean things like the Paragon Times, like the villain group dossiers, like Ghost Widow's profiles (and similiar bits such as "stalkers of the Rogue Isles,") and in-game items like the Combo system, used only for dual blades.
Now, this was much worse before Paragon Studios was bought out by NCSoft, letting Cryptic go on its way. The team, now, seems dedicated to seeing things through, even if they have to take a long view on them. Heck, they've shown willingness to evolve both the story and zones - though we might not always think the way it's done is quite right (such as all the extra groups diluting hunts in the Hollows.)
Still, some things could use revisiting, expanding, and filling out.
So, what's the point of this little rant? Aside from getting thoughts together for a suggestion, what feels forgotten or half-finished to you that you think the PS team (developers, artists, CS, website, the whole enchilada) should go back, revisit, fill out or expand?
I listed some of mine earlier.
- Villain group profiles. They're interesting reading, but tucked away and forgotten.
- In-"character" story and lore - The Paragon Times vanished with Gilgamesh, as I recall. Someone should have, IMHO, been appointed to fill in his shoes. (Of course, this was on our way down to a 15-person team.) The in-world stories, interviews and such were fun to read, and helped bring people into the game. (No, the city scoop does not fill the same function.)
- The combo system. It's used for dual blades. It feels like it was brought in, played with, shown off - then left alone. Why does nothing else use this, or something similar?
- Quite a bit of website "stuff." Reports from Ghost Widow, for instance. The somewhat disjointed villain bios. The villain group profiles. The monster profiles (far from complete.)
- The manual! When has this been updated? Ever? Yes, I know manuals go out of date for an MMO, and we do have the wiki and such - but even the role examples for ATs are from... well, many issues back. -
Don't think it's quite the same as what's in the scoop, unless you're thinking of the interviews (which seemed to fizzle before the CS's hiatus, IIRC.)
As far as the OP - who I think is thinking of the City Vault - who would choose these? (I do mean for both who's in it, and who chooses which to show each week.) Are these just random shots? These would be put on the website themselves? Is this roughly just a costume contest (without prizes except for being picked?) Would there be one for both hero and villain, given the name "hero of the week?"
How do we know it's not just a Loyalist plot to create some sort of hit list? -
Quote:From the arc:I was always under the impression that Tyrant wasn't looking to kill Statesman in the first place. He's captured in that weird stasis field because he's a better conversation piece that way, not because Tyrant couldn't beat him in an out and out fight.
Quote:You remember how the Praetorians weren't able to use their own tech to scan States? Well, our best theory on that is that Statesman is physically so similar to Tyrant that his presence in the Praetorian dimension is never quite complete. It's as if there just isn't enough room for him there. The upshot is that Statesman is impervious to Praetorian technology. And it's impervious to him! He can't break out of that cell, not on his own. You have to help him! -
Quote:Missed something, then. See, they *can't* hurt Statesman, basically - it's a bit out of sync with the rest of the lore, as Nemesis (for instance) has no problem fighting other Nemesisss....ess....es. There's probably some "well of the furies" handwaving going on with states, though.I am reading what is going on, but apparently I get something different from it than you do. The arc makes me feel like he is the weakest of the group, forced to trick States to trap him rather than overpowering him.
I wouldn't argue with overall freshening up. *shrug*Quote:For who is should be the arc really does not portray him in a very powerful light. Perhaps a bit of a rewrite would work as well. Anything so that he does not come off as the weakest Statesman of the bunch. -
Quote:Yeah, it's nice now that it's *fixed.* It was not fun when it was affecting player pets - especially when I was teamed with a friend's Plant dom. Jack, Audrey and the vines had fun attacking us. >.<Pulled out my Ice/Storm yesterday for an ITF. I recently added three purple Coercive Persuasion IOs, including the Contagious Confusion proc, and I wanted to test it out.
LOVE IT!
So *very* glad it's fixed! -

/disagree.
If you're seeing him as "just another mad criminal out of his league," you're not reading what's going on. And personally, I like that saving Statesman from another version of himself is the cherry on top of my career. I'd rather not have to hope I find a worthwhile TF group to do it. -
Quote:Honestly? Not that much past, perhaps, the mid teens. Control, after all, does reduce the need for healing in general. This makes me curious. I run an Ice/Thermal Controller, which I think is pretty comparable to Ice/Empathy, and I can't imagine how you can say AA would do you "zero good." The radius on AA is the same as your PBAoE heal. Are you also not using that power?
If anything, it's treated as a self heal probably 60% of the time I use it.
Melee is off doing its thing, while I'm supporting them, keeping threats held or contained and using the ST heal, if needed. Squishies, back with me, benefit from the AOE - they're generally not getting hit as much. If I'm in melee, it's for a matter of seconds - right on the heels of the melee folks to fire off Glacier, or as a quick hop in for a spot AOE heal.
There's generally no reason for me to be in melee most of the time on that character. -
I've got to be honest - I far prefer a third party solution over having it integrated into the game. Even when my friends and I are playing games that HAVE integrated voice chat (L4D, for instance,) we end up using a third party client. No changed interface or commands between them, no futzing with audio settings in every program, and we can chat in game, out of game, then start another game without pause.
I'll take Teamspeak and/or Ventrillo over integrated, thanks.
