Oh, and related - very hard habit to break from COH.

Here, I can take a level 1 and fight off 3-5 minions, sometimes more.

There... One's a fight, two's a rough fight, three is pretty much guaranteed death solo. So when I see "oh, two walking around there, no problem..." um... yeah. That's cost me a few times. (And that's not even getting into their bosses!)

Knew I forgot to list one - though in the game I mentioned, it's not *as* big a deal. Yes, within zone, hoofing it can take a while (though you can get some nice speed buffs.) But they also have two levels of "everywhere" transport - long distance in zone transportation, and inter-zone via teleport, as well. Of course... they go back to charging each and every time you use it (unless you have someplace bound - also at a fee the first time - or scrolls, which, again, cost.)

But yeah. There are times hoofing it to a mission or contact I *really* wished I had SJ or something. Though at least your feet arent' nailed to the ground so a particularly large pebble isn't an impassable barrier (much less a six inch rise.) That irritates me no end when I run into it elsewhere.

No, you're not. You can't pay for something that's *not in stock.* Well, you *can,* I suppose, but I for one would feel rather silly doing so.

Honestly, with my in progress system build, one thing made me finally go and put an ATI card on the list - as I had a *really* bad experience with them that put me off their products for some time (since the Radeon 7000 days) - not performance, though I'm not seeing a hit there it looks like. The fact that, for nVidia, everything in the range I want was sold out *continually.* A shipment came in for one I initially had in the build, ("due 12/20," I think) and was gone almost instantly.

Fermi initially was "due at the end of 2009," then they had chip problems (not an issue, as it was still in development at the time,) then production problems (and don't forget that wonderful sawed off circuit board on the "This is the real card I'm holding!" presentation. Just irks me.) If it's a killer card, I can wait for the .1 or .2 version to come out and upgrade in a year. If it doesn't outperform what I put in - the upgrade gets put off.

But for now, if stock's not there, I can't buy it, and that's all it boils down to.

Yes, it certainly *does* enhance your PC usage experience to make them not feel neglected. As well as other things.
  6. So I'm a two MMO gamer right now. Not mentioning the other (though I have in the past, and I have played one or two others,) as I don't really want to make this a "comparison" of them. There's a good bit about the other game I like - but at the same time, it has REALLY made me appreciate some things in COH.

    Such as:

    - Our lack of gear. No, enhancements are not "gear." Yeah, they wear out (IOs excluded,) but at most they could be considered "gear lite."

    - Our use of enhancements. Oh dear $deity, you have no idea how much I love this in COH having experienced the "outside world." If you want, say, your Fireball to be stronger - you put in stronger enhancements. And you do it relatively soon. Heck, you can put in IOs. You don't run, hoping your gear can be improved, then pay for Fireball II, III, IV.

    - Not having to pay for Every. Little. Thing. Or more precisely, to get better at things. Now, I'm not referring to drops and such here. I'm talking about - I suppose "ranks" would be a good way of putting it. "You've gathered X amount of stuff, great! Now pay me 500,000 gold so you can do it for another few levels. Oh, by the way, you need to get to a higher rank (by paying me) before you can do your mission."

If this were in COH? Imagine paying, say, 150k inf to open up travel powers. And 150k to be able to start using DOs. Since you're higher level, another... say, 2,000,000 inf to start on SOs. And that after you've paid to put a third, fourth, fifth and sixth slot in a power. You'd also be paying for pools, paying for access to powers after tier3 and 6 - in both the primary and secondary...

    And this leads to:

    - No real grind in COH. Yes, you can choose to. Yes, we *used* to (sort of) have a grind when content petered out at 38, years ago - earlier, perhaps, if you died a lot (higher debt cap, etc.) But part of the reason RMTers seem to have such a foothold everywhere else is that last point I mentioned - pay for *everything.* Here? It's just not a big deal. *Everything* has a chance of dropping, there's no "You need X amount of INF to level up, and for a costume, and... and... and...." There, I can really, really understand taking the risk of an RMTer hijacking your account and/or you getting banned when you're looking at a few million (insert monetary unit here) to... well, *be able to do anything.*

    - No XP loss, no real penalty for dying. I've said before (and I think someone has it in their sig, actually) that the only thing lighter than debt, especially with all the reduction, patrol XP, etc. we can get, would be to have to wait for an NPC to come by and laugh at you before you could rez.

Really, though, I think a lot of this is specifically the Eastern MMO design vs the Western MMO design. We have subscriptions, while many Eastern MMOs have people playing at cafes, paying hourly and the like - and to try to keep them in, you want them working this stuff off. You don't need that with a monthly (or greater) sub - you've got the money, even if the person only logs in an hour a month.

Now, yes, there are things I think COH can take from the other MMOs as well, and I've mentioned them at times in the past. Other things... just wouldn't translate over very well. (For instance, I like the whole crafting bit - even if it gets expensive, especially the chance to "crit" and get higher quality items, which themselves can be used for even higher quality items... with a chance to fail. I kind of like that element of chance, even if it makes things expensive at times.)

But overall - heading "out there" has just reinforced for me how *good* we have it here, even with some of COH's own lumps.

  8. It depends on how you mean "worked better." There are ways it could work better that could also be the final nail in its coffin here - it would technically work better, but be no fun.

I'd probably still give it a whirl, in any case.
  9. It ends up counting the lines it takes inside the signature box (which really should be expanded.)

For instance, mine is an image (counts as one line - if you can fit multiples in there, good,) and two text lines of links when you look at it here. However, in the signature box, I'm pretty much *at* the five line limit.

If you're copy/pasting something from another source, count how many lines it's taking up in the signature "box" when you put it in. More than 5? Not going to work.
  10. Fraps *caps* your ingame FPS or its *own* capture stops at 15 FPS?

If it's the second, there's a setting in FRAPS to alter that.
If it's the first - what's your usual FPS (average, not looking at ground/sky) and what are you running on? (Asking because I've run it and dont' think I've seen a noticable drop.)

Personally... I think it helped more than anything. You definitely become aware of aggro, mezzes and the like.

    The Accolades

I don't pick up accolades for one simple reason. Not that "IOs outperform them" or anything, simply this:

    I don't care.

Yeah, the min/maxer might. I don't. If I get them along the way, hey, great. They don't unlock new content for me, they're not required to get anything done. I've got a good size stable of alts and I don't feel like grinding.

    Er...

Have they fixed that? Since otherwise, if you're attacked/attack someone in PVP, you're suppressed. For everyone else, it means "you're slower," for teleport it means "No travel power for you."

So this is an actual bug...at least in that zone.
That's a different issue - I see the same thing in (for instance) the Rikti "big portal" room and in the Shard, which will have scenery, NPCs and players completely disappear and reappear depending on where I moved to. Happens on XP and Win7, and the chatter will usually become "great, invisible mob time" in team when we run across it.

They're seeing it on the character select screen. There's no 3d camera to move around.
  15. Quick answer: Yes.
Long asnwer: Yes. But it's not something you need to rush out and do right this second. It does take care of many things people complained about with Vista (UAC is nowhere near as intrusive, it's got pretty good performance, etc.) and even some of the stuff that might sound like "so what?" features (Aero Snap/Shake, for instance) I've found myself really missing when I go to an XP machine. It's the only time I've run an OS in beta and said "I'd buy this *right now.*"

    How about no.
  17. I want to make sure there aren't any assumptions being made here -
Are you talking about a *current zone* being shifted, or a *newly made* zone which would shift thanks to PVP mechanics?

The first, honestly, isn't worth talking about - it's just not a good idea. (Bad enough in Paragon, but absolutely crippling in the Isles with far fewer zones.)

The second, though... could be interesting. Creating a new zone that - basically - takes the Siren's Call mechanic of "control" and expands it beyond just "Is my side's store open?"

It would, honestly, have to be one of five states - all Villain, mostly VIllain, grey, mostly Hero, all Hero. (This would *have* to get reset as well, generally during server maintenance. I'd say the several weeks is just too long. ) in the "All (faction)" state, there's no PVP because the other side's not allowed in. There are more PVE missions, you can plant "traps" for if the other side takes over (which themselves don't last past server maintenance,) "Mostly (faction)" means the other side can sneak in, but resources are limited, while some control side resources are cut off. "Grey" (hard to shift out of, really,) is a PVP/PVE zone.

    I wouldn't argue with this.

But... and there's always a but or ten...

    1. There's just not much of a PVP population. This has to be faced, no matter what.

    2. The zones themselves may not get much use because of PVP power rules. They can be *vastly* different (there's *zero* hold protection, for instance,) and I can see that being... well, unpopular when someone's trying to do some of the PVE missions.

    3. Contacts - if you end up with a full-control contact arc, log off, and come back to 'Villains control (zone name,)" you're stuck with a story slot that cannot be cleared (other than a drop.) If you don't want to deal with PVP... you're stuck, and that'd be another strike against the zone's popularity.

    4. Community friction. Related to several of the above - as soon as someone runs in to do a mission and gets AS'd by a stalker - whether they're killed or not - they're going complain. It happens NOW with BB, RV, and Warburg. Putting the content in isn't going to magically convert PVEers to PVPers. Some will try it and stay, sure. Others will try it and leave, still others won't set foot in it to begin with. That's not a guess, that's history, that's the way things have been since the zones came out.

I'd think the only way to get a "shifting control" zone to work where more people would participate would be as a set of zones. You'd have the main "Competitive Co-op" zone - both factions have their own missions (countering each other,) but there's no direct PVP. A portal or something takes you to a PVP zone, where you can fight for (say) artifacts, control, etc. and affect the zone. There would also be a separate hero and villain zone connected to it, where running missions and/or a Task/Strike force can alter something in the "hub" zone, as far as control. Maybe contacts open, maybe buffs, who knows.
  18. Depends. What do you want to do?

Also, the individual powersets *within* an archetype can give very different playstyles - as can the combinations. (For instance, a Robotics/Force Field MM is very safe, but I found it very boring (while others love it,) while a Thugs/Poison was far more active - I couldn't get enough of playing it. An Illusion controller is going to play a lot differently than a Fire controller, and so forth.)

Generic answer: A Scrapper (heroside) or Brute (villainside) tends to give the ability to dish out and take some punishment, so those will generally be the generic suggestion. (And for brutes/tanks, I *really* like superstrength.)

    More customized:
What do you like to do?
Have you played MMOs before (WoW, Aion, SWG, etc?) If so, what role did you enjoy taking? (Support, dps, ranged damage, tanking, anything and everything?)
If you haven't played MMOs before, have you played RPGs (Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age, Diablo II, Sacred - anything with classes) before? If so - same question.

Also, as a last note - there are two things to realize about this game.
    1. It's a "Journey" game, not a "Destination" game - that is, there's no reason to rush to 50. There's no "uber gear" (at least not like you'd really understand from other games - we have enhancements, and some are rare, but no equipment to wear out/replace/etc.) It's all about what you do on the way up.
    2. Don't feel tied in to one character. You'll notice you have 12 slots on *each* server. There's no artificial limit (such as "You can only use 8 of them") - so feel free to make alts (alternate characters - I'm somewhere in the 140-150 character range) and try new combinations, new sets and the like. As mentioned before, even within the same archetype, the different sets can play very, very differently.

    Some PvP Tweaks

    Quote:

Honestly? I'd have to disagree with this. See, COH didn't launch with PVP. There was some pre-release talk about it (which led to the arenas,) but we have a very comfortable PVE population.

If it *had* launched with PVP - and not just with PVP mechanics, but with a good reason to PVP, good storyline behind it (other than "I beat you up!") and such, we'd likely have a different population mix now. PVP in COH feels somewhat tacked on - and otherwise is put out of the way. You can go from 1-50 in COH until every possible slot on every server is filled with characters and never encounter PVP (past having to talk to the warzone liason.)

A good portion of the population just doesn't *care* about (or is actively hostile toward) PVP. Even those that do care and like it (such as myself) run through a wide range from "enjoy it casually from time to time" to "hardcore, in PVP SG, running PVP tuned builds only, and almost never stepping out of the zones/arena."

(I'm looking at Aion as a contrast, where - unless you quit before level 10 - you *will* be exposed to PVP in some form. There are missions that take you to speak to someone on the other *active* side of the Colluseum, missions that take you into enemy territory, missions to see people in the Abyss (PVPVE zone) and even if you skip all that - enemy players running through *your* territory to do missions or just hunt players for Abyss points, drops and giggles. You cannot avoid it in that game, pretty much.)

"Can't find it" is also one of the arguments, as a side note, against things like adding more PVP zones, or making the PVE zones "PVPable," or adding /duel commands. It spreads out the PVP community.

    Quote:
    1. For preset arena matches, aka the ones that are always listed but are universally ignored, change the minimum player requirement to two. It's silly, especially on low population servers, for it to not run every hour if there's people signed up. When you're bored and sign up for one of these, it's kind of annoying that, even though there's 6 others signed up, it'll never start because it demands 8.

    2. An extension of this, keep the ASAP matches to 8 player minimum for an ASAP start, but if they're short, start them on every hour regardless of number as long as there's at least 2.

    3. If a player logs off for a bit, unregister them for all events in the arena they signed up for. I clicked into a Battle Royal with 7 other people. When the match started, nobody spoke or replied when I said hi. Got into the match, nobody entered the map except me. Turns out, all seven of them were offline. They should not have still been signed up for the match.
Yeah. That kind of turned me off even trying those. I only go in to fight with friends or the occasional arranged event (the occasional - do they still run? - "Level 4 PVP" matches are great fun.)

    Quote:
4a. In PvP zones, allow /whoall to cut through /hide. That way someone seeking PvP can see everyone in the zone, hidden or not, and it'll eliminate the need to waste 20 minutes running around looking for someone who might be active but on /hide.

4b. Alternatively, add a / command that says how many enemy players are in the zone, regardless if they're hiding or not. This may be more ideal than 4a, since people can be hidden where ever but you can still tell when there's enemy players in a zone. Though it may take a little more work... or it may not, I don't know.
4a, I disagree with - I don't think anyone should have free intel on who's around. 4b, sure.

I'll mention here, though, that I'm seriously biased. I *like* hunting the other side. I don't *want* to know that there's a Stalker or Controller or whatever else out there - what I *would* like, however, is for them to "leave tracks." (Or perhaps clues would be a better way of putting it.) Meteors, for instance, refresh quickly - unless you're a few seconds behind the other person, in which case you can probably see them, you won't know anyone's been there. (You can't rely on shivans - I can get the shards from all six without ever having a shivan pop up, using just the temp jetpack.)

I've told this before - a year or two ago, I was in BB during the winter event. Zone seemed empty - then I saw frostlings. I hadn't grabbed any presents anywhere near there, so I went hunting. /whoall showed nobody, and I certainly wasn't going to announce my presence. It was a fun hunt - even though I never did find out who else was in the zone. That stalking (in probably the truest, non-creepy-illegal-type sense of the word) was *fun.* I had to guess where they were going, doing, if they knew I was around or not...

Of course, part of that runs headlong into the whole stealth/perception bit. Again after running around in Aion (sorry....) I have to think a wholesale perception nerf would be interesting... as in, no, I can't see you jumping around on the other side of the zone, but within a few hundred feet (?) I might... and have perception powers spike up for those that have them as you get closer, for that melee combat.

That may not work with ranged powers like we have, pets, etc - but it's an interesting experience outside of here.

    Quote:
    5. Whenever a player does something in a PvP zone in regards to the zone's mini-game, announce it. Doesn't need to be specific, just something like "A hero has taken a meteor sample" or "A villain has launched the rocket". PvP zones have awesome rewards for ridiculously little risk. This makes it harder for players to engage in these mini-games undetected, upping the risk. You know, kind of what Recluse's Victory does.
While this is kind of related to "leaving tracks" like I mentioned above... I'm not sure I like this mechanic. Personally, I'd go for something more subtle - watch for reinforcements rushing somewhere, for instance. Something you have to interpret, not that gets handed to you on a plate. But again, I'm biased towards hunting.

No real comments on the others.
  20. AFAIK, only the concept art.

For the most part, honestly, there's no difference except saying "kidnap" instead of "rescue." It's been an occasionally voiced complaint that villainside isn't villainous enough - and that you're never the mastermind (not AT) of what's going on, just a lackey or mercenary.

If you want to play a villain AT before GR... AE it. I'd say most of the actual story arcs are heroic or neutral - it's harder to write a decent villain arc that makes you feel villainous. Step out of AE on occasion to sample some of the redside arcs, as mentioned, avoid Westin Phipps (but don't skip the Television or Vernon von Grunn,) and get the mix you're happy with.

On a controller, you're getting extra damage from Stalagmites (as well as the stun.) On a Dominator, you're not. If you don't want them wandering around (or wandering much,) use Earthquake, Quicksand or VG.

    You're a Dominator - you *are* damage.

There are (in general) very few Doms I take the AOE immob on. Plant/Thorn, absolutely - to keep confused mobs together, to keep them there for Creepers and Fling Thorns, etc. But for most doms... the AOE immobs are pretty skippable.
  24. I think it's time for an overhaul (and added utility) to the Supergroup search window. Right now, it's just not very useful. (It should also be resizeable, as it's not right now.)

    Here's how it looks currently:
    Code:
    -------------------------------------------
    SG name Prestige Description

    <Top 100 Supergroups> Search Supergroups:
    -------------------------------------------
This is great if you sort of know what a name is, but that's about it. Even the "Top 100 Supergroups" is - well, fairly pointless, as all it shows is a ranking by prestige. If I want, say, a PVP-oriented group or an RP oriented group, the fact a group has 14000000000 Prestige doesn't help me. Are they really active, or just old and don't have a base they've spent it on? You have to hope that some description has the information you want - and you have no idea who to contact.

So, how about a revamp. We could quite frankly steal some of the AE search window. This would also require a revamp of the SG description window, of course, to get this information in.

First, what kind of information would be helpful for a SG to list? To me, some of the following:
    1. Who the leader is/who to contact - list whoever has the big red star, basically. If there's an alternate person, have a spot for them, too.
    2. Membership. Not names, just numbers. Levels might be useful, as well.
    3. Founded date. OK, perhaps not important, but one of those bits of info some might want to see.
    4. Last Active date - if nobody's been in for a year, I probably don't want to ask if I can join.
    5. Accepting members? Public, invite only, private not accepting.
    6. Focus? This would be PVP, PVE only, RP, AT specific ("Kheldian only," for instance.)
    7. Notes - separate from Description. (Things like "We run MS raids weekly" and such, other info someone may want to know.)

Access to edit this information, of course, is still on the SG permissions page. (At least for what *can* be edited.)

Next, edit the search page at the registrar. Search fields:
    1. SG name
    2. Leader or Member name (so if you team with Blasterguy and he says "Yeah, we're recruiting, I can't invite though," and you take a day to think about it, you can just search on blasterguy - alternately, if you feel you have to complain about a member but not in a /petition sort of way, you can.)
    3. Accepting members - just search for every group set to whatever selection. Radio buttons, essentially.
    4. Focus - Checkboxes with an "Other" field that would take text.

The results window (larger and resizeable) would give three lines of information for each, which can be expanded (much like the arc description in AE can) to see the rest of the information:

    Code:
    SG Name Founded Members: ###
    Leader Focus Accepting?
    Description:
(This could, of course, be rearranged.)

Double clicking to expand would give:

    Code:
{SG LOGO}SG Name "SG Motto here"
    { }Founded Members: ###
    { }Leader Focus Accepting?
    { }Description:

(Obviously "raidable" is going to be "n" at the moment for everyone. THat can be put in if/when they put base raids back in.)

The expanded description should give more of a "feel" for the SG. It's as much an advertisement for it as an expanded description (thus the addition of a logo and the motto on top of the other information.) It does also leave the Prestige in, for anyone who's actually interested in that. (It could be left in the search, but should really be listed as something other than "Top 100 Supergroups" - specify it's by banked prestige or something, not an actual 'rating' of the groups.

I'd think a rework like this would help people find groups that are a better fit for them, help them contact people in the groups they're interested in, and just be more useful than our current arrangement.

    Example searches:
    1. Know the SG name:
I teamed with "Blasterguy." He said his SG, "Better Living through Heroics," was pretty fun and active. I go in the next time I log in, having gotten the two IOs I had stored in my currently inactive SG's base out and left them, and search on "Better Living" in the name. Three groups come up, I pick "Better living through heroics," see they're public, do some PVP and RP, and accepting members - and it's pretty active. I click on LeaderGuy, which opens an email (or /gtell, global not revealed perhaps) and say "Hey, I teamed with Blasterguy, he said your SG is pretty fun, I'd like to join."

    2. The lost coalition
This is one I had happen a while ago. I'd inherited leadership of an SG. I noticed, after a while, one of our old, old coalitons (that I didn't remember ever NOT having, really) was always dead. I had no idea who ran the group, since I didn't set up the coalition. With this setup, I could have looked up the coalition and emailed the leader - or seen that nobody had been active in the group for the last, say, two years and just broken off the coalition all together right then and there. (As a side note, I'd also like a "coalition management" function for the leaders - a coalition specific email, activity, etc. just to make communication inside the coalition a little easier.)

    3. Looking for RP
I'm new to Justfinity server. I like RP, don't care for PVP, so I want to find a group that fits me. I go in, put nothing in the name, and look for "Accepting" groups with "focus" set to RP and hit search. I browse through the ones that look interesting, discarding the three listed that do PVP, and contact 1-2 likely ones with members who have been on in the last 2-3 days to start with.

    2. I recently made a tank, and i don't know if it's just because I can take more damage with it, but does anyone else hate when your fighting a baddie, and your doing fine until someone else joins you to kill it? Maybe they do it because they want to speed up the process, but it just annoys me!!
In which case, just say "Didn't need the help, but thanks anyway." You'll get one of a few reactions to this:
    "Sorry"
    "Want to team then?"
"lulz u don do enuf dmg" (aka "Please put me on ignore.")

If they continue to "assist," pull out the radio, go in a mission, and wait for them to go away.

    3. If you are an RP'er, you'll agree to this next one. Do you hate it when you join a RP team and then it kinda mixes between IC and OOC and then you just forget to put the brackets around your sentence? BLAH!!
I never use brackets. Ever. That's pretty much a virtue-specific thing... but even then. *shrug*

    4. I also hate when I make the mistake of buying the wrong enhancement have to sell it back. I either bought the wrong level, wrong type, or both. Then i gotta figure out which training enhancement goes with the kind for my Archtype.
They're color coded. You can also right-click on the enhancement and get info on it. It will tell you what it does.

Also, because I have a MAC, does anyone know how to take an In-Game screen shot without the tabs or powers bars in the pic? Like the epic ones people use as profile pics? Thanks!!
    In the chat bar, type:
    /screenshotui 0
    Take the screenshot.
    /screenshotui 1

Youc an bind them if you want.
